A study published in the journal Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience pinpoints how poorly regulated inflammatory responses affect certain neurons and can lead to loss of brain cells — especially as you get older.
Major triggers are inflammatory foods such as added sugars and saturated fats, hormone-disrupting phthalates and BPA/BPS, and fiery habits like smoking, excess drinking, and lack of sleep.

If you have Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, or chronic stress, your body's also battling excess inflammation. So call out the fire brigade.

To put out your fires now try these three steps:

  • Take 900 mg daily of DHA omega-3 from algae.
  • Take a probiotic.
  • Floss your teeth daily.
To banish destructive inflammation adopt these long-term habits:

What Does 'Autoimmune' Mean?

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:


Two of the white blood cells the immune system produces to monitor what is happening in the body are called B-cells (which mature in bone marrow) and T-cells (which mature in the thymus gland).

T-cells stimulate the immune system when foreign invaders enter the body. Some T-cells (CD8) can destroy viruses or tumors that infect normal cells. Natural killer T-cells can also destroy tumor cells as well as the body’s own cells when they are infected with viruses.

Special: Doctor Reveals Little-Known Immune Health Secret

B-cells are part of the body’s humoral immunity, so named because it includes materials found in the humors, or bodily fluids. B-cells produce antibodies when they come in contact with foreign invaders.

The human immune system is always working. When we eat, the immune system determines if food particles are safe to enter the bloodstream. If the immune system senses a food particle is dangerous, it will produce an antibody against it.

I test every patient who comes to my office for food allergies. Dairy testing is a crucial part of that. More than 80% of people I’ve tested were producing antibodies against casein, a protein found in most dairy products. A patient who produces antibodies to casein will cause his or her immune system to go into a reactive mode when casein enters the body, through drinking a glass of cow’s milk or eating a piece of pizza with cheese made from milk.

The immune system is recognizing casein as a foreign substance that should not be in the body, and is trying to eliminate it with antibodies produced by B-cells. Those antibodies tag the casein protein for removal by other white blood cells.

When a person who is sensitive to casein continually ingests it, the immune system reacts by repeatedly producing antibodies. That leads to an overactive immune system that can inadvertently start overproducing other inflammatory molecules, resulting in overwhelming inflammation.

As the cells of the body become more stressed, the immune system can mistakenly begin to produce antibodies against its own cells.

I have seen such an immune overreaction occur many times. For example, Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune condition of the thyroid gland. In cases of Hashimoto’s, the body produces antibodies against the thyroid gland itself. I have treated many Hashimoto’s patients simply by finding out what food is causing the immune system to become overwhelmed, and removing it from the diet.

Sensitivity to gluten — a composite of proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley — is one of the most common causes of Hashimoto’s disease. Researchers have shown one of the proteins, gliadin, has a similar structure to thyroid molecules. In fact, people with Hashimoto’s are more likely to develop gluten sensitivity (also called gluten intolerance), and those with celiac disease are more likely to develop thyroid problems, including Hashimoto’s.

Though it’s not noted as frequently in medical literature as gluten sensitivity, I have seen many patients with Hashimoto’s improve or even cure their condition altogether by avoiding dairy products.

But keep in mind that I don’t try just one therapy with these patients. For such patients, avoiding dairy and/or gluten is advised along with a holistic treatment plan that includes balancing the hormonal system and correcting nutrient imbalances.

Whether it is an exercise class, yoga, stretching, a brisk walk around the block, or just getting up out of your chair to dance to your favorite song, let's make movement into a daily practice. Remember they say it takes 21 days to form a habit, and what better way for you to provide your body and mind the nourishment it seeks.

Winter Habits for Positive Mental Health



A long-time friend of mine just texted me from Grand Forks, North Dakota. He sent me a screenshot of their weather for the next five days. The lows ranged from -22 down to -29. With the windchill factored in the lows felt like -45. That’s cold and dreary weather.

I asked him what they did to keep from going crazy with weather like that. He said they had to work everyday just to keep from strangling each other. Troop morale is not great when it’s cold, windy, mostly cloudy, and seems like spring will never get here. There is even a medical term for the winter blues, it’s called Season Affective Disorder, or SAD.

There are many ways to combat SAD and keep our mental health positive. Here are just a few:

  1. Exercise – of course we knew that was going to be my first answer. Nothing feels better than getting a great workout on a super cold and dreary day. Work up a good sweat on a cardio workout, play some basketball or challenge ourselves pumping some iron. We can walk out of the gym with a new bounce in our step.

  2. Start that project or hobby we’ve been meaning to get going – stimulate the brain with new activity. Maybe we have wanted to clean out the spare room and get it ready for company. Perhaps learn to play chess or start an online painting class. Recently, I bought a small torpedo heater for my garage and did some long overdue sorting of my tools. I built a new workbench and found I had three of the exact same hammers.

  3. Get really, good clothing – this might sound obvious, but it feels good to have nice, warm clothing. During our cold winter months, I like to wear flannel lined jeans. I can walk outside and don’t feel the biting cold come through my pants. It makes a huge difference not feeling the winter wind. Visit an outdoor store like Cabela’s and purchase cold weather gear. Start with a down coat, warm gloves and hat, and then get a nice pair of insulated boots. It feels great to go out in the cold with clothing to keep you warm inside.

  4. Sit by a fire – get a fire going in the fireplace. If we don’t have a fireplace in the house, build a fire outside, preferably out of the wind. The warmth from the fire feels great and lifts away some of the seasonal moodiness that winter can bring.

  5. Get together with friends and share a meal – make it a potluck and give out food suggestions. Encourage people to bring their ingredients and do the cooking together. Tell stories and have great conversations while the food is being prepared and while it is cooking.

  6. Stock up on Vitamin D - Since we get most of our vitamin D from the sun, it’s a good idea to take a vitamin D supplement during the winter months. So many diseases are correlated with low vitamin D levels, especially depression. The National Institutes of Health's recommended dietary allowance for vitamin D is 600 international units (IUs) a day. However, many nutritionists recommend at least 5,000 IUs during the winter months.
These are just a few suggestions to chase away the winter blues. Stay positive and work these activities into our everyday lives. Make sure to hang with positive, active people during the winter months.

When you stop pushing against reality, you learn to see unexpected events as opportunities for growth. Try to focus on the positive as much as you can.

By breaking free from negative thought spirals, you get the clarity of the next step that you need to take.

Observe your thoughts and emotions without getting caught up in them. Have faith that it will work out.

Hey there Jim,
People label all unhealthy food as processed food, but it is essential to remember there are degrees of processing. For example, minimal processing helps remove inedible food parts while cleaning and preserving the nutritional content. Whole grain pasta and flours are excellent examples of healthy options that are minimally processed.

The foods people consider unhealthy and avoidable are ultra-processed; this does not include canned fruits and vegetables with added sugar and salt; however, these are not minimally processed either, and there are healthier alternatives. Ultra-processed foods require multiple steps and the inclusion of ingredients with unrecognizable names.
The dangers of processed foods ☠️

Ultra-processed foods often include preservatives, artificial flavoring and coloring, and emulsifiers to create a more appealing look and texture. Think of chips, soda, luncheon meats, frozen meals, and other packed snacks and baked goods.

The Problem With Ultra-Processed Foods and Drinks

Ultra-processed foods destroy the structure of the whole food. As a result, manufacturers and producers introduce ingredients that do not naturally exist in food. Instead, the chemicals and products are introduced to preserve edibility and increase shelf-life, ultimately improving corporate profitability.

When people talk about a food matrix, they discuss the natural structure of a food, including its vitamins and other nutrients. A producer destroys the original matrix and recreates a new structure more suitable to corporate and consumer interest by altering the food. Unfortunately, you can never get back the original nutritional integrity of the whole food.

Therefore, whole food will always be more nutritious than overly-processed food. For example, a person will receive more significant benefits from consuming high-fiber real food than a fiber supplement.

The Dangers of Ultra-Processed Foods

Like those found at fast-food chains and in snack food aisles, processed foods present significant health risks. Several studies have linked the regular consumption of ultra-processed foods to an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, vascular disease and stroke, and cancer. Other research suggests consuming a diet of primarily ultra-processed food results in shorter life expectancy.

Experts guess the reasoning is tied to the ingredients in these foods and the lack of nutritional value. In addition, chemical, artificial ingredients, and preservatives can affect the metabolism and the body's ability to digest and process foods.

The Solution for Positive Change

The body needs vitamins and minerals to survive and thrive. The best resource for these nutrients is through the consumption of whole and minimally processed foods. So while everyone likely has a favorite party snack or sugary indulgence, the objective should be to eliminate as many unhealthy foods as possible.

Elimination might be too strong a word because everyone needs flexibility. Restricting yourself too quickly from foods you love can be counterproductive. While a transition to a healthier diet is crucial, especially if you live on heavily processed foods, a gradual transition is more respondent to sustainable change.

Many foods require some level of processing. Your goal should be to consume more whole foods and foods that require minimal processing. The nutrition label is often the giveaway because ultra-processed foods will have multiple ingredients that sound more like chemicals than food. Changing your diet can help reduce the odds of future health complications.
