Gut Health Month
Hey Jimi,
We wanted to expand on our gut show from last week with Dr. Jack Tips and dive into supporting a healthy gut terrain.
We create a healthy terrain through a healthy diet including specific sources of fiber and vegetables to support the microbiome and biodiversity.
First, we must establish a healthy gut microbiome through:
  • Slashing Inflammation
  • Purging Pathogens
  • Reseeding and Healing the Gut
  • Creating a Healthy Ecosystem through Terraforming
Once this is complete, the use of probiotics can be used on an occasional basis to support healthy biodiversity.
If we build a healthy environment, our bacteria can create their own beneficial bacteria strains. This is huge!
Unfortunately, many of us have had to take multiple courses of antibiotics, whether directly or indirectly through the foods we consume and being exposed to antibiotics in our environment.
The use of these antibiotics, while sometimes necessary, disturbs our microbiome on a molecular level. Because our microbiome is so intricately connected to the health of our immune system, central nervous system and brain, these can also get disrupted with the intake of antibiotics.
By including a healthy diet full of fiber and resistant starch, the immune system can start forcing the gut bacteria to mutate and therefore support healthy gut bacteria.
Fruits and vegetables provide great sources of soluble fiber, but so do legumes (peas and beans), oat bran, and chia seeds.
The bottom line is that we need to realize that the microbiome is king when it comes to our well being and it is essential to continue to build and nurture a healthy ecosystem.

Hi Jimi,

When it comes to digestive challenges, IBS — otherwise known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome — is one of the most common.

In 2019 alone, the disorder had a global prevalence of between 10-15%, with an estimated 1 in 5 Americans suffering from the disorder.

IBS can present a confusing picture for both patients and clinicians alike, as there can be multiple factors that play into the disorder. And IBS is also highly unique to the individual.

But two increasingly recognized contributing factors to IBS are stress and anxiety.

In today’s episode, we meet 45-year old Michelle from Australia, who has had IBS for the last 10 years. She’s tried numerous restrictive dietary approaches including a low FODMAPS diet, and reports that they seem to have only increased her food intolerances.

Regardless of what she eats, Michelle is frequently struck with extreme digestive discomfort, causing her intense anxiety and worry about the consequences of trying to engage in the simple — and necessary — act of eating. To boot, Michelle is often ravenous and snacks a lot throughout the day, contributing to some weight gain that she would like to shed.

Unsure of how to proceed, she consults with Marc David for help. Through the course of their conversation, Marc and Michelle explore what’s truly at the root of her particular IBS, and whether her anxiety around what to eat is simply a natural result of being in daily discomfort, or whether it’s actually a causal factor to her disorder.

Drinking alcohol, with meals, particularly wine, may reduce a person's risk for Type 2 diabetes, a study presented Thursday during the American Heart Association's Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2022 found.

Consuming alcohol with meals was associated with a 14% lower risk for Type 2 diabetes compared with alcohol intake without eating, the data showed.

The benefits of alcohol drinking with meals in terms of Type 2 diabetes risk were most pronounced among the participants who drank wine, as opposed to other types of alcohol, the researchers said.

"The effects of alcohol consumption on health have been described as a double-edged sword because of its apparent abilities to cut deeply in either direction -- harmful or helpful, depending on how it is consumed," study author Dr. Hao Ma said in a press release.

"In our study, we sought to determine if the association between alcohol intake and risk of type 2 diabetes might differ by the timing of alcohol intake with respect to meals," said Ma, a biostatistical analyst at the Tulane University Obesity Research Center in New Orleans.

"Previous studies have focused on how much people drink and have had mixed results. Very few studies have focused on other drinking details, such as the timing of alcohol intake."

In this analysis of health data for more than 312,000 current regular drinkers in Britain, about 8,600 developed Type 2 diabetes.

"Clinical trials have also found that moderate drinking may have some health benefits, including on glucose metabolism," Ma said.

"The message from this study is that drinking moderate amounts of wine with meals may prevent Type 2 diabetes if you do not have another health condition that may be negatively affected by moderate alcohol consumption," he said.

Still, the relationship between alcohol consumption and Type 2 diabetes risk remains controversial, according to diabetes specialist Dr. Robert H. Eckel, who was not involved in the study.

"These data suggest that it's not the alcohol with meals but other ingredients in wine, perhaps antioxidants, that may be the factor in potentially reducing new-onset type 2 diabetes," said Eckel, a past president of the American Heart Association.

"The results suggest that if you are consuming alcohol with meals, wine may be a better choice," he said.


Past research has linked alcohol consumption with short- and long-term health risks, including motor vehicle crashes, violence, sexual risk behaviors, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, breast cancer, liver disease, depression, suicide, accidents and alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

These health risks increase with the amount of alcohol an individual drinks increases, according to the American Heart Association.

For some cancers and other health conditions, the risk increases even at very low levels of alcohol consumption -- fewer than one drink daily, the association says.

Because of these health risks, both the American Heart Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that adults who do not drink alcohol should not start.

Adults who drink alcohol regularly should talk with their doctors about the benefits and risks of consuming alcohol in moderation, they advise.

Moderate drinking is defined as one glass of wine or other alcoholic beverage daily for women and up to two glasses daily for men, according to the CDC.

However, some people should not drink at all, including women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, people under age 21 years and people with certain health conditions, they add.

What does YOUR BRAIN like?

It's Wednesday morning and I'm trying some new things which will be to your benefit. (I also messed up, which also benefits you... more on that below.)

I talk a lot about "try-learn-grow-REPEAT" and being simple and consistent with your health-building activities.

This REALLY hit home during the live recording of the Chronic Pain Masterclass last week.

With so many takeaways it can be overwhelming for us to know where to start (ie, try) what we've learned.

So here's what I'm doing... I'll be your guinea pig of sorts;)

I'm trying a FEW new things, and being simple and consistent with them. (You saw that coming didn't you?!?)

For example, functional neurology coach Matt Bush taught us how your brain interprets an activity/exercise as a "threat" or not... as "safe" or "unsafe."

We used overall shoulder or trunk motion as the indicator. If overall range of motion improved >> safe. If motion got worse >> unsafe.

We assessed and reassessed our motion before and after each drill.

These brain drills were not strenuous, hard to do, or time intensive. I'm talking about 'exercises' like putting your tongue on the roof of your mouth, pushing on either side of your cheek, or performing tongue circles around the front of your teeth.

I know, I know... it sounds crazy but these simple exercises may be enough to cause a brain response in your body.

Anyway, because they're so simple and practical, I picked a few brain drills (that my brain interprets as safe) and I'm stacking them onto already existing habits.

+ While doing my morning mobility routine, I'm holding my tongue on the roof of my mouth.

+ While lying on my spinal traction blocks, I'm humming a low note for three long exhales.

+ While warming up for my workout, I'm wearing red colored glasses.

It doesn't take any more time, and it drastically improves the simple and consistent effort I'm already putting in.

Keep this in mind: The neuro exercises my brain deems as safe does not necessarily mean your brain will interpret it the same way.

During the Matt's session for the Chronic Pain Masterclass, we all found which of these simple exercises our individual brains liked and didn't like.

The attendees and I LOVED this because...

We know to get rid chronic pain, illness, and disease, improve our health, daily performance, and longevity, it's not only time to think outside the box with our current healthcare...

We also have to try new things simply and consistently (like simple brain drills) so we can learn and grow.
