The Gut–Lung Connection

Hi Jimi-

Did you know your gut health can affect your breathing?

In this episode, Evan joins me as we discuss the connection between the gut and respiratory system.

You might not immediately associate gastrointestinal problems with lung disease, but the two frequently coexist. The tissue and glands in your lungs and intestines are the same and react to the same triggers.

You may not immediately think of a connection between the operations of your digestive and respiratory systems– but in this episode you will learn that these systems collaborate in a variety of ways, including to deliver energy to the body’s cells!

*-- What Foods Are The Best Immune-System Boosters? --*

Berries
You can't go wrong when snacking on berries of all kinds - especially since they're the best foods for a cold. That's because berries, such as strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries - which have loads of health benefits - are a hydrating source of vitamin C. Vitamin C functions as an antioxidant and plays an important role in immune function.

Bananas
Chock-full of potassium, as well as other powerful nutrients such as fiber and vitamin B6, bananas are about as good as it gets when it comes to strengthening your immune system. Additionally, studies have found that the electrolytes in bananas have seriously impressive energy-boosting benefits, which certainly comes in handy when you're feeling fatigued from a cold.

[Fun hint: Botanically speaking, a banana IS a berry.]

Eggs
Eggs might not be the first food you think of when you're feeling under the weather, but experts agree that they're one of the best foods for a cold. They're loaded with protein, which is an important nutrient to have in your body when you're fighting an illness, and don't skip the yolk. Yolks contain nutrients important for warding off illness, such as zinc and selenium!

Fatty fish
When lunch or dinner time calls fill your plate with a nutrient-dense protein like salmon or tuna. One study, published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, found that a diet containing DHA-rich fish oil, found in fatty fish like salmon or tuna boosted the activity of a white blood cell called B-cells, an important part of the body's immune system response.

Yogurt
Yogurt is one of the best foods for a cold because it's a good source of protein - especially Greek yogurt - which plays a role in the body's defense mechanism. Choose live culture versions, and you'll get probiotics, or 'good bacteria,' which may help ease the severity of colds. Plus, it's a great place to add all of those berries you're eating.

Let’s admit it. It’s been a tough two years. We’ve lost homes, friends, loved ones, and livelihoods.

As Xavier Dagba says in the video below, it’s time to "come together and meet the grief that has been knocking at the door of the collective heart."
It’s time to invite these emotions in.

Sit with them.
Acknowledge them.
And, ultimately, let them all go.

Throughout this process, we might end up crying.
And that’s perfectly okay.
Because after we purge, we can start fresh.
Set new goals.
And plant new seeds.

After all – that’s what springtime is for.
Join The Event hosts and life coach, Xavier Dagba, for a FREE guided healing journey – where we can let go of grief and rise into the next chapter of our collective expansion.

SPRINGTIME RE:GENERATION starts this Sunday, March 20th at 12PM (PST).

Hi Jimi,

I was teasing in my subject line - “ground breaking” - because the truth is that using the ground around you to create healing on every level is one of the most effective and cost-free health opportunities in the world.

Grounding (or earthing as I prefer to call it) is such a powerful healing modality - it is something that I do everyday.

But did you know there is a way to multiply the healing effects of earthing? (There are also pitfalls to earthing.)

In just a few days I will share all this and more at Dr Eva Detko’s upcoming event ( I also talk about the science behind earthing and why it works).

Click here to join Dr. Eva Detko’s upcoming Conference on “Healing the Psycho-Energetic Root Causes of Chronic Illness”.

Broccoli's Bio-Individual Effects

Whether or not the sulforaphane you get from broccoli benefits you as much as it benefits many other people depends in part on your genes.
Sulforaphane promotes the production of glutathione and other antioxidant enzymes in the body, and it does this by increasing the activity of a protein called “nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2” (Nrf2).
But what few people realize or talk about is that Nrf2 is bound to another factor called Keap1, which restrains Nrf2 from activating increased production of antioxidant enxymes like glutathione.
And some variants of the Keap1 gene cause the Keap1 protein to bind more tightly to Nrf2, resulting in Nrf2 being less readily activated by things like toxins and the sulforaphane from broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables.
People with chronic fatigue, brain fog, and/or inflammation very often have this particular Keap1 variant, which reduces their ability to produce glutathione to manage oxidative stress and detoxify many toxins and toxic substances.
There are also variants in other genes that code for enzymes involved in glutathione synthesis and recycling that are very common in these people.
This is one reason why it's very important for people with chronic symptoms related to inflammation and oxidative stress to undergo comprehensive genetic analysis that focuses on the right things.
Certain nutrients and botanicals are known to help compensate for genetic vulnerabilities like the Keap1 variant that holds a death-grip on Nrf2.
So once the genetic variants most likely to be contributing to a person's fatigue or other symptoms are identified, the right targeted foods, botanicals, nutrient supplements, and lifestyle practices can be selected to have the most impact as part of a holistic program.
This might mean eating a lot more of certain foods, using certain supplements to achieve higher doses than can be achieved through food, and/or using an essential oil blend designed specifically for the issue, like this one with rosemary, patchouli, and two types of lavender.
However, rather than focusing entirely on Nrf2 and Keap1, we would also want to look at pathways that may be generating excess inflammation and oxidative stress because this places extra pressure on the antioxidant production that is managed by Nrf2 and KEAP1.
We'd want to prioritize addressing these inflammatory and oxidative pathways first, or simultaneously along with promoting Nrf2 and Keap1.
This is an example of how the "Pyramid" analysis comes into play, which I described in a previous email.
The Pyramid report places genetic information in a pyramid structure that helps to prioritize issues, as shown in the image below (click the image to enlarge it).
image
The biochemical pathways on the bottom row have the highest priority, followed by pathways in higher rows of the Pyramid report.
Organized, strategic genetic analysis like this plus genetically individualized nutritional strategies are centerpieces of the Bio-Individual Blueprint program.
This approach can facilitate breakthroughs after years of disappointing results from one-size-fits-all protocols from practitioners that are not using this method.

Choline and Estrogen

I've written about choline before, but I feel that it is time to say more.
Choline would be called vitamin B4, but it's not technically considered a vitamin because we can synthesize it.
However, we do not produce enough of it to rely solely on our own production. And some people need more choline than others.
The average dietary choline intake in the US is less than 50% of the Daily Recommended intake (DRI), and 90% of Americans consume less than the DRI.
The need for dietary choline is determined by a combination of individual choline production and individual choline requirements in the body.
One factor affecting choline production is variants (polymorphisms) in the PEMT gene.
An important factor affecting choline requirements is methylation cycle function because when the methylation cycle is not functioning well (e.g. due to genetics, dietary deficiencies, toxicities, oxidative stress, etc), more of the choline supply gets used to donate methyl groups to the methylation cycle.
For women, another important influence on choline production is estrogen.
Estrogen promotes choline synthesis because choline is needed in large amounts to create new life as it is a key constituent of cell membranes.
And pregnancy and lactation increase choline requirements.
Because estrogen promotes choline synthesis, the approximately 26% of women who do not have PEMT polymorphisms, who have normal or high estrogen levels (e.g. premenopausal), who have normal methylation function, and who are not pregnant or lactating (which increase choline requirements), may have lower than average choline requirements.
These women may be able to get by on about 250 mg of dietary choline per day.
But once estrogen levels decline, as in menopause, dietary choline requirements increase.
The average woman needs about 450 mg per day of choline, and the average man needs about 550 mg per day.
But for people whose methylation cycle is not working well, whether due to genetics, deficiencies of other B vitamins, toxicity, oxidative stress, or other factors, choline requirements double to 900-1200 mg of choline per day because some of the choline supply gets routed into the methylation cycle as a methyl donor, leaving less choline for its other functions.
450-550 mg per day can be obtained with ..
  1. 3 egg yolks, or ...
  2. 150 g of liver, or ...
  3. 300 grams of raw beets or 150 grams of cooked beets, or ...
  4. 600 grams of cruciferous vegetables, nuts, and/or seeds.
If you have methylation issues (most people with chronic health challenges do), then you may need to double the amounts above from food and/or supplements, at least until your methylation issues and the factors driving them are resolved.
There are two main natural forms of choline and you should endeavor to obtain both: phosphatidylcholine and betaine (trimethylglycine, or TMG).
Animal sources are higher in phosphatidylcholine (PC), and vegetable sources are higher in betaine / TMG.
It's a good idea to get half your choline as PC and half as betaine / TMG.
If you are a vegetarian or vegan with an insatiable desire for nuts and seeds, you might not be getting enough choline, or enough in the phosphatidyl choline form (or not enough protein, or fat, or something else).
Choline is just one example of a nutrient that very few people are getting enough of.
If you're dealing with chronic health issues, it's likely that nutrient deficiencies nobody has tested and revealed to you are at least part of the issue.

"Save Soil" Movement

Save Soil is a global movement launched by Sadhguru, to address the soil crisis by bringing together people from around the world to stand up for Soil Health, and supporting leaders of all nations to institute national policies and actions toward increasing the organic content in cultivable soil. It's a bit spooky to see Klaus Schwab's face as a supporter in one of the videos, but I think this effort is putting the focus on the right things--soil organic matter and biodiversity, while avoiding the topic of animal agriculture that divides so many people, and without linking this to social control agendas. At least I didn't see anything like taht on the website, and I wouldn't think that Sadhguru would be involved in that.

Hey Jimi

I wanted to send you a quick test that you can do to determine if you need to support your vagus nerve.

Before I share the test with you, I want to talk a little about the autonomic nervous system.

Often when we think about the autonomic nervous system, we think about flight and fight or rest and digest.

But here's the thing, it's so much bigger than that!

According to Dr Steven Porges's work and polyvagal theory, we understand that there are 3 circuits of the autonomic nervoys system.

We have sympathetic spinal activation, which is the fight or flight. (anxious, overwhelmed, angry, panic, rage, worry, concern, frustration)

We have dorsal vagal, which is the freeze. (dissociation, numbness, depression, helplessness, shame, shutdown, trapped)

And lastly, we have ventral vagal which we are in a state of safety. This is when we are joyful and mindful. We feel connected to ourselves and the world.

None of these 3 circuits are bad.

We need to be able to flow through them quickly throughout the day.

The issue is when we get STUCK.

This is why ancient East Asian medicine is true in believing that emotions are the root cause of dis-ease.

The emotion is not the issue.

It's the stuckness that is.

Learning how to regulate your nervous system and activate the vagus nerve in particular ways is imperative to reduce health symptoms and create more emotional resiliency.

Having energy, emotional intelligence and feeling grounded allows you to increase your capacity to hold more and go for your next level success.

Ok....

So let's have you do this simple test to see if you need support.

mail
(image unknown)

Testing Ventral Vagal Function

  1. Grab a partner (or a mirror) and a flashlight
  2. Have your partner look at the inside of your mouth at the back of your throat at the uvula that drops down the center.
  3. Now do the "ahhhhhhhhhh" sound.
  4. When you open your mouth, you can use your finger or a stick to press your tongue down so you can see the uvula and soft palate better.
  5. You are looking to see if the uvula deviates to one side.
If the uvula deviates to one side, that is indicative of ventral vagal nerve dysfunction. If it moves up symmetrically, then you are in a state of social engagement.

If you have soft palate that is moving up on one side and not the other, that indicates a dysfunction of the pharyngeal branch of the vagal nerve.

Why does this all matter????

Your nervous system controls your behavior and therefore you will continue to subconsciously sabotage yourself on your path to success.

Also, you need to be in the parasympathetic most of the time in order to fight infections, digest, have balanced hormones, lower inflammation, sleep well and so much more.

This matters a whole lot.

And we will be going much deeper into this and what you can actually do about it in ADEPT.

Adept is a 6 week program to activate your vagus nerve and unlock your next level success.

We start next week!

Hi Jimi,

Just a friendly reminder that this is your last chance to watch "Bloating, Weight Gain & Leaky Gut: How to Heal Your Gut Naturally".

Many people in our Natural Living Family community come to us with digestive issues, uncomfortable bloating, gas, fatigue, mood issues, skin breakouts, sugar cravings, or food intolerances?

Those symptoms are common of an unhealthy gut, and sadly, can be the tipping point for many chronic and degenerative diseases.

This is why we're super exited to announce our friend and founder of Food Matters Institute, James Colquhoun, is hosting an online masterclass on gut health this month and this is your last chance to...

In last week's Vlog, I talked about the process of letting go of our favorite binge foods, and in the comment section below that video, a viewer offered a brilliant analogy that I want to share with you today. He suggested that we should think of our cravings from the perspective of an outsider so that we're a witness to them instead of being a victim of them. Watch to hear my response to his astute observations.

Hi Jimi,

Did you know that you actually need inflammation to stay healthy?

Yes - need!

I know we’re always on the lookout for signs of inflammation…

But if you twist your ankle or you catch a virus or you cut your finger, you have to let inflammation do its job to help you heal.

Inflammation only becomes a problem when it keeps surging through your body after your hurt has healed.

And if you don’t keep it under control…

It can attack your healthy joints and tissue, it attacks your cells, your brain, your immune system, and even your DNA. And it leads to illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, neurodegenerative disease, and cancer.

In fact, chronic inflammation is believed to be the root cause of as many as 80% of all major human diseases!

So how do we keep the balance between healthy short-term inflammation and its damaging chronic form?

This month, Dr. Elena Villanueva is hosting an inflammation-fighting masterclass for our community.

In this masterclass, you’ll discover the most cutting-edge ways to pinpoint, target, and combat the root of your inflammatory issues (not just the symptoms) safely and effectively.

Dr. V has always put on exceptional classes in the past, that’s why I don’t hesitate to share this one with our community.

The complimentary class is starting soon, so go here now to save your seat — it could truly transform your life.

Does Chemotherapy Work?

Let’s see how effective chemotherapy actually is with a few common cancers.
  • A meta-analysis of chemotherapy for postmenopausal, estrogen receptor-positive women (the largest group of women with breast cancer) pooled the six largest studies to get the most accurate data on survival and complications. Here is what researchers concluded about the group treated with standard chemotherapy: “No significant survival benefit was observed.” (2)

  • In non-small cell lung cancer (the most common type), the 5-year survival is only about 10 percent. In stage 4, when the cancer has spread to distant sites, the 5-year survival is only 1.6 percent. After looking at multiple studies, it appears that treatment generally results in a very slight improved survival rate at 1 year, but this advantage disappeared at 30 months of follow-up.(3)11
  • Even in small cell lung cancer where chemotherapy has proven effectiveness in life extension, the benefit adds only a few months of life, not years. And during this time the patient can experience serious—even life threatening—side effects from the treatment.
Almost nothing has been done to teach people about the power of nutritional excellence to protect against cancer.

What Should You Do?

If you have cancer and are considering chemotherapy, it is wise to do a Medline search on all of the studies done on the recommended therapy, so an informed decision can be made.
If this were done, most patients likely would refuse chemotherapy.
Doctors generally hide and distort the realities of chemotherapy, talking to patients about “shrinking the cancer” and “killing cancer cells,” not mentioning the fact that the therapy has not been shown to extend life.
Every patient has to make her own decision. But if I were a woman with postmenopausal breast cancer, I would opt for surgery, without radiation and without chemotherapy, and would then pursue an aggressive nutritional protocol. I also would include antiestrogens if the tumor histology showed it to be estrogen receptor positive.

39 inflammation-fighting smoothies!

Happy Thursday, my fellow healthy living lover.

Just finished my ultimate energy smoothie and I'm ready to go.

I'm not sure there's anyone who loves smoothies more than I do.

To me, it's the best way to pack TONS of anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-oxidative foods into one simple "package."

That's why I have one every single day!

I even made mine green today in honor of St. Patrick's Day;)

But, whether you love them or not, many times you just have to find the right combination of inflammation-fighting ingredients while still making it delicious.

So it's smart to have a smoothie "rolodex" (remember those?) at your fingertips that you can reference at any time.

My good friend, Dr. Elena Villanueva, has just released an easy-to-follow smoothie book with 39 inflammation-busting recipes... and you can have it at no charge.

I'm particularly looking forward to #26 The Pineapple Detox Smoothie and #29 the Monster Green Smoothie.

All 39 of these easy-to-make smoothies are carefully designed to help you gain a sharp, clear mind, better mobility, and robust health.

The HEAL Podcast Full Video Episode YouTube Release:
Dr. Mark Hyman

While tens of thousands of listeners have been tuning in to every episode of The HEAL Podcast on both Spotify and Apple Podcasts, we wanted to make our most popular episodes even more accessible by posting the video recording of them to our YouTube Channel. Today's release:

Dr. Mark Hyman: Functional Medicine, The Power of Real Food,
and the Pegan Diet

On this episode of The HEAL Podcast, I sit with Dr. Hyman to discuss his latest book, The Pegan Diet and how food is medicine, which can heal or harm. We break down the issues with dairy, wheat, and meat, and delve into many of the common misconceptions surrounding food as a whole. By making the right choices in our food (which can be done on a budget!) we can reverse chronic disease and heal our bodies, ultimately inviting us to see and use our local grocery store as a FARMACY. He has devoted his life to helping others discover optimal health by addressing the root causes of chronic disease through the power of functional medicine. Dr. Hyman believes that our biggest risk factor for disease, disability, and death is our diet, with the western diet being among the most detrimental to our health.

Stay tuned for more full video episode releases on YouTube in the weeks to come. You can also listen to this episode and all other episodes of The HEAL Podcast now on both SPOTIFY or APPLE.

  • Allows us to take a break from everyday challenges and responsibilities.
  • Helps emotions move through our bodies.
  • Provides an outlet for self expression.
  • Strengthens the connection we have with our bodies.
During the month of March we have invited some special guests to guide you through different movement inspired HEALing. Join us LIVE, WEDNESDAYS 6pm PST on the HEAL INSTAGRAM. Check out a couple of our recent IG LIVE's that incorporate movement:

Hormones are invisible messengers with an immense amount of power. Hormonal imbalances can happen in a wide variety of ways, causing a wide variety of difficult symptoms.
This is an issue I’m constantly helping my patients address and it’s one that Functional Medicine has a much better grasp on than the conventional approach. Because hormonal imbalances are such an important piece of optimal health that so many people struggle with, today we’re rebroadcasting a helpful conversation between Dhru and Dr. Sara Gottfried.

Your Daily Motivation

Friday

March-18-2022
A mood tracker is a great tool for observing the trends in your mental health over a period of time. A mood tracker app allows you to pick your score based on how you feel each day.

As you reflect on your day while submitting your mood entry, you become more aware of how different situations affect you. You feel motivated to try new things that make you happier.

It also helps to give you perspective.

Seeing an overview of your good and bad days makes it easier for you to appreciate the bigger picture of your life and not let a few bad days overshadow the good ones.
