Can Staring at a Screen Too Long Hurt Your Vision?

The good news is that using your laptop, tablet or smartphone isn’t going to hurt your eyes. You don’t have to worry about a screen ruining your vision or making you need a stronger prescription. Those are all myths.

It’s still important to take good care of your eyes, though. Bright screens can cause dry eyes. Many people experience eyestrain, or tired eyes, after a long workday. Some people even get headaches from this. There are times when my eyes feel like sore grapes!

Why Can Staring at a Screen Cause Eyestrain and Dryness?

One reason screens make your eyes feel uncomfortable is that they slow down your blinking. Blinking is essential for keeping your eyes hydrated and clean. Normally, you should blink at least 15–20 times per minute. But when you’re staring intently at a screen, you only blink half that much! This can make your eyes really dry, especially after using a computer for hours.

Bright screens can also make your eyes exhausted — literally. Whether you’re absorbed in a book or shopping online, the tiny muscles around your eyeballs are constantly moving. Your eyes have to focus over and over, similar to how a photographer adjusts a camera lens.

Like any other muscle, eye muscles can get tired, too. After a while, focusing gets harder and concentrating on words requires a ton of effort. That’s a sign you’ve pushed your eyes too far. They need a break, just like how your feet want to kick back and relax after standing all day.

How Can You Prevent Eyestrain?

Follow these tips to protect your eyes:

1.​
Avoid screen glare: Some newer screens have an anti-glare coating. For extra protection, you can buy a cheap ($10) matte screen filter for your computer. If you wear glasses, another option is to get an anti-reflective coating for your eyeglasses.​
2.​
Turn down screen brightness: A screen that’s too bright can tire your eyes out more quickly. Turn down brightness as much as possible while making sure reading is still comfortable.​
3.​
Increase the text size: Most apps let you adjust the size of words on the screen. Making text bigger doesn’t have anything to do with age. It’s about reducing eyestrain. Larger text is just more comfortable. Trust me, I kicked the settings up a few notches and it made a huge difference for my day.​
4.​
Take a break every 30 minutes: If possible, stop what you’re doing every 15–30 minutes so your eyes can rest and rehydrate. Get up, grab some water, eat a handful of almonds or check on your pot roast. Then, go back to writing your novel or working.​
5.​
Don’t sit too close: For a computer screen, position your chair so your eyes are about two feet away. For a tablet, hold it at the distance you would a book.​

The solution to dry eyes and eyestrain isn’t to use eyedrops constantly. That's actually a bad idea. Prevent CVS instead by making life easier on your eyes. You can still use your laptop or tablet whenever you want; just remember to blink more and take more (healthy) snack breaks!

Do you suffer from bloating, irregular bowel movements, and fatigue?

Food sensitivities are not always easy to identify.

This is because you may not feel the symptoms for up to two days!

So you may feel bloated and uncomfortable on a Wednesday but it was Monday’s dinner that made you feel this way.

However, there are some common foods that people are sensitive to. These include:

  • Gluten
  • Wheat
  • Dairy
  • Eggs
  • Sugar and artificial sweeteners
  • Corn
  • Soy
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Fast foods
  • Nightshade vegetables including tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplants
  • FODMAPs, an acronym for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. They are a group of sugars that can cause digestive upset for susceptible people.

6 Food Chemicals That Can Cause Adverse Reactions

Certain food chemicals have also been implicated in causing reactions including:

1. Salicylates

Salicylates are natural aspirin-like compounds present in a wide variety of herbs, spices as well as fruit and vegetables. Reactions to these may be even more common than reactions to artificial colours and preservatives and can cause an extensive range of symptoms.

2. Amines

This is primarily found in aged foods and strongly-flavoured foods such as pineapples, bananas, baked meat, vegetables, red wine, wood-matured white wine, avocados, chocolate, citrus fruits, and mature cheese, and more. Amines commonly cause mood and sleep concerns, but like salicylates, can cause a wide range of reactions.

3. Oxalates

Oxalates are a natural food compound found in very high amounts in healthy foods such as almonds, beans, soy, quinoa, dark chocolate, green tea, turmeric, and a list of fruits and vegetables including spinach, Swiss chard, beets, celery, carrots, sweet potatoes, raspberries, kiwi, and pomegranate.

Some people may have issues breaking down oxalates in their food. And when oxalates are not eliminated from the body, they can build up in tissues, organs, and joints. It can even lead to oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage.

4. MSG

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and the flavour enhancers can cause similar responses as the amines. These are additives in foods, but glutamates also occur naturally in such foods as camembert cheese, Parmesan cheese, tomatoes, soy sauce, and mushrooms.

5. Sulphites

Sulphites are naturally present in berries and other fruits, but low compared to amounts added to dried fruits (e.g. apricots, pears, peaches, and apples), potato products, dried coconut, sausages, all crustaceans (prawns, lobsters, and crab), dessert toppings, and cordials.

Sulphites are produced naturally in fermented grape products (wine and vinegar) and are found in all foods containing wine and vinegar. Some people have sulphite sensitivity and may react with allergy-like symptoms.

6. Benzoates

Benzoates are another type of preservative added to cordials, fruit-flavoured drinks and juices, soft drinks, and marinades. Benzoates also occur naturally in some foods – for example, honey and cranberries. The amount present in naturally occurring foods is often too small to provoke a reaction.

*-- How Often Should You Shower? --*

Most of our "norms" came from good advertising starting shortly after the Civil War. The advertising for "toilet soap" was much more effective in America than in other countries. Showering daily became especially popular when people stopped working on farms as much as and started working in factories close together.

However, frequent showering may be doing more harm than good it turns out (and many studies have shown this already). Hot showers can irritate and dry out your skin, as can showering too much. It also washes all the good bacteria that naturally exists on your skin away and can cause cracks in your skin, both of which can help lead to infections. This is why many doctors recommend that babies and toddlers are not bathed on a daily basis. Early exposure to dirt and bacteria may make the skin less sensitive as you age and prevent allergies or eczema according to Zeichner.

Obviously though, if you work out daily, play sports, or do extremely strenuous activities daily, showering every two to three days as suggested may not be something you're comfortable with, but as a general rule, if you can go every two to three days, you should! You can clean the grosser parts of your body with a washcloth or wipes daily to freshen up though! Also, change your undergarments daily. You shed more dirt and oil in your clothes than you do in the shower!

Now, with all that said... it's important to remember that these times we find ourselves in may require us to shower more often, especially when you're still part of the workforce and you want to stay clean, safe, and healthy. And be sure to wash your clothes, towels, and bedding more frequently, too.

Less Sleep Tied to Heart Risk

People who regularly sleep six to seven hours a night have lower cardiovascular risk compared with those who sleep less, according to a study presented at an annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Kartik Gupta, from the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and his colleagues evaluated the association between baseline cardiovascular risk and self-reported sleep duration.

Baseline cardiovascular risk was estimated using the 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score. The researchers found that among 14,079 eligible participants (mean age, 46 years; 52% women; and 46% non-Hispanic white), the median 10-year ASCVD risk was 3.5%.

Special: Why Those Over 50 Should Take Sleep Issues Seriously

The association between the 10-year ASCVD risk score and sleep duration was U-shaped, such that participants with a sleep duration of six to seven hours per night had the lowest risk.

Median 10-year ASCVD risk was higher among participants with less than six hours (4.6%) of sleep per night compared with those with more than seven hours of sleep or those with six to seven hours of sleep per night (3.3% for both).

"Sleep is often overlooked as something that may play a role in cardiovascular disease, and it may be among the most cost-effective ways to lower cardiovascular risk," Gupta said in a statement. "Based on our data, sleeping six to seven hours a night is associated with more favorable heart health."

Good Saturday my fellow healthy living warrior.

Another great session on the basketball court this morning. Didn't know if I'd play this week since we're leaving for my wife's family's neck-of-the-woods today for Easter (they live in the south suburbs of the Chicago area).
