MOTIVE​

Spring always reminds me of emerging, emerging from the worst of the chaos of cancer. I finished the hardest part of treatment at the end of 2017, and by the spring of 2018, my hair was starting to grow back, I had my first clear MRI under my belt, and I was just starting to allow myself to think about life after cancer.

When I made all of the significant lifestyle changes after my diagnosis, it was a challenge, especially as a young person when most people my age were drinking and eating whatever and however much they wanted. Friends would ask me all the time how I was able to go to parties and not drink or eat anything that wasn’t allowed on my diet. My answer was always the same: “Fear is a great motivator!”

But as time went on and the distance between my diagnosis day and where I was now lengthened, the fear started to fade a little bit. The fear of recurrence is always there, but it does blunt a bit with time, and so too did the motivation that it provided to stick with my lifestyle changes and healthy habits.

While I do go through ebbs and flows with the various areas of my recurrence prevention protocol, there have been a few things that usually work to help me continue making healthy choices as much as possible. Firstly, I started thinking of these choices not as something I had to do but as something I was fortunate enough to know to do. Not everyone is lucky enough to know about the benefits of an integrative approach to cancer care and prevention (part of why I advocate for this approach!), and reminding myself of that perspective helps me stay on track.

Additionally, looking at them as acts of self love and self care, things I am choosing to do because I love myself and want to show myself care, really helps to take away some of the resentment, anger, and frustration at having to be more strict than my fellow 30-somethings. This simple shift in thinking can be enough to move my attitude to a place of positivity and diminish the resistance to whatever healthy habit I’m trying to engage in.

And finally, understanding the benefits of what I’m doing, as well as the drawbacks of the corresponding less-healthy choice, serves as a reminder of why I’m doing it all in the first place. Knowing that what I’m doing is making a difference to my physical health really helps to support my mental health and the way I think about my protocol. It fosters feelings of confidence and self-worth, and that’s a much more effective place to approach those habits from. I deserve vibrant, whole-self health, and so do you.

If you’ve seen either of the interview series I produced and/or hosted (“Heal Your Spirit, Heal Your Body” and “imPOWERED”) then you will be familiar with Rick Shapiro, author of the incredible book on late-stage cancer survival stories “Hope Never Dies”. He shared an article recently about the research on broccoli sprouts and the benefits of their key active compound, sulforaphane. I’ve taken sulforaphane since the beginning and also grow my own sprouts, so his post inspired me to add sulforaphane to my list of Star Supplements!

20+ years ago, a shopping trip was taken to look further into the then curious fact that those who eat more fruits and vegetables have lower rates of cancer, and it ended up sparking a significant scientific impact. Dr. Paul Talalay and his students discovered the substance sulforaphane was present in high concentrations in cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, radishes, and Brussels sprouts, but that it was highest in sprouted broccoli seeds, or broccoli sprouts.

Diet and Nutrition: Recipes​

It was my Mom’s birthday recently and, like me on my cancer diet, she has a number of dietary restrictions as well. With the two of us at a meal together, it can sometimes be a challenge to find something we can eat that everyone else will enjoy too! For her birthday meal, she requested something with chicken and mushrooms, so we whipped up this paleo chicken alfredo with white wine mushrooms (the alcohol cooks off, for those concerned about alcohol consumption). It was absolutely AMAZING! And everyone agreed that it tasted like the real thing; you couldn’t tell it was dairy and grain free!

Dairy (especially cow dairy) and refined grains like wheat are very inflammatory foods. They can cause inflammation in the gut and contribute to the development of a condition called leaky gut, which in turn can cause over-stimulation of the immune system leading to systemic, chronic low-grade inflammation, something that cancer LOVES! So, it’s important to reduce inflammatory foods in your diet.

Unfortunately, inflammatory foods are things that are in a lot of products. It’s almost impossible to find a premade product that doesn’t contain refined sugar, grains, oils, dairy, etc. Finding alternatives you can make yourself not only allows you to control the quality of your ingredients (hello organic, free-range meats!), but also allows you to substitute problematic ingredients for those that will actually be good for you. For example, this alfredo sauce, instead of using cow dairy and refined oils, uses cauliflower and coconut milk to make it creamy, ensuring it’s packed with healthy omega fats and the powerful cancer-fighting compounds that are the hallmark of cruciferous veggies.

Next time, instead of reaching for a jar of premade alfredo sauce, try this paleo version out instead! And if you do, let me know how you like it

What we have learned over the past several decades is that the microorganisms within the colon (which include bacteria, fungi, and certain viruses — called collectively microbiota), play a major role in virtually every aspect of physiology and ongoing development.

Other functions these organisms perform in the human body include:

  • Reducing inflammation

  • Playing a role in the manufacture of bile
  • Secreting a number of neurotransmitters
  • Playing a major role in stress adaptation

Special: This Gut Health Secret Is Key to Your Body's Immune Challenge

The human gut contains trillions of microorganisms, more than 100 times the number of genes as are found in our cells.

In fact, there are thousands of different bacterial species within the colon alone. Recent studies have shown that these microbiota are part of a complex network called the microbiota-gutbrain axis, which also involves the nerves in the walls of the gastrointestinal tract, the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic systems), the neuroendocrine system (special hormones), and the immune system.

Basically, this axis amounts to a two-way communication link between the brain and the intestines.

The gut bacteria (microbiota) talk to the brain by special chemical messages, and the brain talks back to the gut via the vagus nerve and spinal nerves. There is compelling evidence that the development of the brain is dependent on a healthy assortment of gut microorganisms that colonize a baby’s intestines very soon after birth.

The main sources of these highly beneficial bacteria are in the mother’s birth canal during natural childbirth and by ingesting mother’s milk during breastfeeding.

Babies born by C-section and those that are bottle-fed have a different assortment of gut microbiota. This can affect their development and future health, especially behavioral health.

Another important factor during this early stage of development is exposure of the baby (and later the young child) to antibiotics, which can kill or severely alter these vital organisms.

It appears that after a person’s microbiota is established, the organisms remain fairly stable throughout life.

Rumination magnifies the problem in your head, leaving you more angry or upset than before.

By constantly replaying irrational thoughts in your mind, you end up reinforcing them and creating a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking.

Your psychological response is more important than what is actually happening. It helps to allocate a fixed amount of time (e.g., 30 minutes) to think of the anxious thoughts you're having.

You can use this time to acknowledge the negative thoughts by writing them down. Once the time is up, take a step back and challenge your thoughts.

Remind yourself that not all of your thoughts are true. The reality is often somewhere in between the best and the worst-case scenarios.

What is Heart Disease?​

Heart attacks aren’t the only form of heart disease (or cardiovascular disease). Heart disease affects not just the heart but the blood vessels and arteries as well. There are many types of heart disease. Heart disease is a general term used to describe dysfunction of the blood vessels in various parts of the body that lead to organ dysfunction.
The most common are:
  • Atherosclerosis — the hardening and narrowing of the arteries due to a buildup of fat and cholesterol;
  • Arrhythmia — abnormal heart rhythm;
  • Heart attack — when a clot blocks blood flow to the heart;
  • Heart valve problems — such as stenosis or prolapse;
  • And heart failure — when the heart isn’t pumping as much blood as it should.

What Factors Contribute to Heart Disease?​

Certain lifestyle factors can increase your risk dramatically. Smoking, type 2 diabetes, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor diet can all contribute to the development of heart problems. That last one is especially important.

What’s Being Done About Heart Disease?​

While genetics are often emphasized as a major risk factor for heart disease, they’re only one possible piece of the puzzle. In fact, the most common heart disease-related gene called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (basically inherited high cholesterol) only occurs in about one out of 250 people. But studies have shown that even in these cases, cardiovascular disease can still be prevented through simple lifestyle changes.
As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and a 2012 study found just that. The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology showed that preventative measures relating to heart disease were more cost-effective than treatments, especially when it came to high blood pressure.
However, we still have a long way to go.
Heart disease drugs are prescribed more often than dietary changes. In 2018, the global cardiovascular drug market was worth over $47 billion, and is expected to reach nearly $64 billion by 2026. And according to the CDC Foundation, at least one out of every six healthcare dollars spent in the United States is spent on cardiovascular disease. In fact, in the next generation, the costs of heart disease are expected to increase to $749 billion per year. That’s nearly half the GDP of the entire country of Canada.
Any way you slice it, that’s a LOT of money being spent on something that could be remedied simply by changing our diets and making other lifestyle changes.

Why Diet Matters a Great Deal for Heart Health​

A growing and, frankly, overwhelming body of evidence now tells us that diet can be absolutely critical to preventing and even reversing heart disease. And not just any diet. Studies by some of our Food Revolution Summit speakers including Dean Ornish, MD, Caldwell Esselstyn Jr., MD, and Joel Fuhrman, MD, have shown dramatic results.
These and other studies have shown how eating a plant-based diet, often combined with regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle, can reduce cardiovascular disease:
  • Dr. Ornish’s 1990 Lifestyle Heart Trial saw an 82% reduction in coronary atherosclerosis after only one year on a plant-based diet, without the use of statins or cholesterol-lowering drugs.

  • Similarly, Dr. Esselstyn conducted a study at Cleveland Clinic, beginning in 1985. Of the 22 patients in the original study, all of whom suffered from severe heart disease, 17 stuck to the diet and stopped the progression of disease, and four experienced a complete reversal.

  • And last year, Dr. Fuhrman published a study which found that when participants ate his “Nutritarian” diet, they experienced weight loss, reduction in blood pressure, and lower LDL (“bad” cholesterol) levels and triglycerides.

What’s the Best Diet for Heart Health?​

Many people are confused by all the different dietary advice we hear about. But here’s the truth: Leading nutritional experts are in general agreement about the most heart-healthy diet for humans. We now have an overwhelming body of data that makes it pretty clear.
The optimal diet for heart health is one that is low in animal products (and especially processed meats), low in sugar and processed foods, and high in vegetables and other whole plant foods.

This Way of Eating Is Also Best for Preventing Other Diseases​

It turns out this same diet is also generally best for preventing cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and many of the other major health ailments of our times. In fact, in 2017, medical researchers conducted a meta-analysis study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
They found that an estimated six to nine million premature deaths (including heart disease and cancer) worldwide in 2013 may have been associated with low fruit and vegetable intake. Millions of lives (and billions of dollars) could be saved every year if we all just ate more plants. I’d call that a win-win!
