Eating disorders.

They’re an extremely common issue that no one likes to talk about, Jimi.

It’s so important that we have a dialogue about this subject so we can recognize and prevent this life-threatening psychiatric diagnosis in adolescents and young adults.

We had the privilege of speaking to Dr. James Greenblatt, a functional medical psychiatrist, who shared the causes, indicators, risk factors, and best treatments he’s found with us as he’s worked with people with eating disorders since 1988.

Anorexia Nervosa is the most life-threatening illness of any psychiatric diagnosis, and it has the highest risk of suicide.

Other eating disorders are just as scary, and the rates of young people affected are steadily increasing.

How can parents identify warning signs of eating disorders in their children?

→ A family history of eating disorders or OCD

Since eating disorders are neurological, a family history of psychiatric disorders can put children at a significantly higher risk of developing an eating disorder.

→ A change in diet
Sadly, physicians, parents, and other adults in a child’s life may suggest weight loss. This can be a trigger for children and adolescents, and a change in diet can be an indicator that something is wrong.

→ Vegan or vegetarian lifestyles
Research shows children and adolescents who are on vegan and vegetarian diets also are at a higher risk of developing an eating disorder because critical nutrients could be missing from their meals.

What triggers disordered eating behaviors?

→ Body shaming and bullying
either at school, by family members, or on social media.

→ Body image issues that are often caused by unrealistic expectations from the media.

→ Humiliation by parents, peers, or other adults. For example, parents may sign kids up for weight loss programs or gym memberships which can cause feelings of shame and embarrassment.

→ The mindset that there are “good” and “bad” foods can cause children and adolescents to hide, sneak, and hoard treats.

What’s the best way to treat eating disorders?

→ Seek treatment right away

Older kids and young adults are more difficult to treat because they’ve been nutrient-deficient for longer periods of time. It’s important to seek help right away.

→ Nutritional plans
While nutritional plans can be effective, aggressive ones are unnecessary. It’s important to seek professional help to navigate the right nutritional treatment.

→ Family therapy
Family therapy is critical so that parents can be part of the solution. Families need to understand the eating disorder so they can support and assist in the recovery process.

There is hope when it comes to eating disorders.

Active listening is the most important thing you can do for children and loved ones who may be struggling.

With early intervention and effective treatment, there are excellent rates of recovery.

It’s imperative that we work to understand, recognize, and minimize the long-term effects of eating disorders on young people.

Is Bipolar Disorder an Immune Condition?

When singer/songwriter/actor Demi Lovato was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 22, it came as a relief, and allowed her to deal with her condition. I have an absolutely incredible story to share with you about a doctor who beat stage-4 cancer.

Back in 2006, Dr. K was enjoying his life as a sports performance coach who was "walking the talk" - and by that I mean that he was...

Exercising 6 days a week...

Eating his veggies (mostly raw)...

I spent many years thinking that my worth was tied up in the things I did - how many activities were on the calendar, how many things I got checked off a list, how clean my house was, how perfectly dressed my kids were, etc.

I wanted all the holidays and birthdays to be “Martha Stewart” memorable, so I went all out with tea parties, homemade pizza feeds, multiple course parties - and Christmases with too much food as well as individual gifts for each person’s plate.

Don’t get me wrong - it was fun and I did love the presentation and the outcome.

But after a few years I was so burned out, I didn’t even look forward to activities and things I’d previously enjoyed anymore.

And I realized that sometimes I forgot about PEOPLE in all my striving for perfection.

It was brought home to me one Christmas morning brunch when my daughter was about three and our son six - I was running around trying to get all the food plated up and to the other family around the table while it was still warm and my daughter was not having it.

It was too noisy, too much going on, but she was in her beautiful Christmas dress - and didn’t she know I was doing all this for her?

My husband, Brian, snapped the picture that still haunts me to this day of a sweet girl in a pretty dress crying her eyes out in front of the perfectly set holiday table because she just wanted ME.

Not the perfect food, the pretty table, the “holiday” - not even the little wrapped gift on her plate.

In subsequent years I dialed the holiday back a LOT - we still had a brunch, but it was just a few super easy foods (the same each year as a “tradition” which eliminates any decisions!) and I got the kids involved in helping. I set the table with nice dishes, but no extras. I built in quiet down time with hot chocolate while lazily opening stocking stuffers.

And there were no more tears. Only memories of fun holidays and the foods and traditions we ALL enjoy.

Looking back, I see that as the start of my journey towards a simpler life.

I didn’t minimalize things as much as I prioritized what I saw as important - God, people and time with them, and time doing things I enjoyed (and if the two could be done at once, bonus points!).

My life - and my family’s life - changed over the next years:

  • We took the time to develop family traditions that we looked forward to.
  • I started growing more organic vegetables, which made me think about what we had been eating and work towards change.
  • I preserved the vegetables I grew and added more and more vegetables to our meals.
  • I started making homemade food staples (including a soft 100% whole wheat sandwich bread!) that I had only thought you could buy at a store.
  • Brian and I remodeled our first house, and then our second using DIY skills we never had before (not only did we save money doing it, we made money when we sold) - most of the time helped by family and friends that made great memories.
  • After eating less and less processed foods, I was able to lose weight and do all the things I loved to do more easily.
  • I developed ways to do most things easier in order to save time on doing what I loved.
We’ve come to appreciate living slower, making time for connecting with God, our world, the people in our lives, and enjoying the satisfaction that comes from a completed project.

These are the simple things.

The handmade things.

That create a simple homemade life.

For the second time, the FDA has avoided answering very simple questions about discrepancies concerning the numbers of deaths in Pfizer’s clinical trial, citing “resource constraints” and blaming its workload, in part, on ICAN’s FOIA requests.

Back in February, ICAN announced it sent a letter to the FDA regarding discrepancies in the reports of death in the Pfizer Covid-19 clinical trial data. Specifically, ICAN sought answers to two questions, both critically important because in Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine clinical trial the final death count in the vaccine group was higher than in the placebo group:

(1) Why do the death counts in the Statistical Review not add up to the numbers in the Clinical Review Memo from which they are said to be sourced and why do both of those differ from the death counts in the Summary Basis for Regulatory Action?

(2) Why are the death data from a randomized controlled trial (“RCT”) treated like a clinical case-series rather than an RCT when it comes to assessing causality? And can you confirm that causality (a biostatistical construct in this case) is being assessed by biostatisticians rather than by clinicians?

Despite the enormity of the issue that ICAN was raising – people who died during a clinical trial – the FDA failed to respond, prompting ICAN to send a follow up on April 2022 reiterating those same two questions.
Incredibly, when the FDA did respond, it did not provide an answer to either of the two questions posed. Instead, the individuals at FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research took the time to contact the FDA’s FOIA office and obtain a count of the total number of ICAN’s outstanding FOIA requests and then cite them as the reason it was unable to “respond substantively”:

We are unable to respond substantively at this time due to resource constraints and the ongoing pandemic response. It is thus necessary for the Agency to prioritize its responses to individual inquiries. We note that the Agency is providing to your law firm, in response to a FOIA request, an unprecedented volume of records that comprise the license application for this product. Additionally, there are more than 50 pending FOIA requests submitted by your firm for data and information about COVID‐19 vaccines.

Perhaps the FDA should have properly done its job when approving Pfizer’s vaccine. Then it would not need to devote an incredible amount of resources to trying to cover-up its abject failure in approving and promoting a product with serious safety and efficacy issues. That would free up a lot of FDA time – just being transparent and honest about its mistakes. Consider this: in the time it took to obtain the FOIA count, the FDA could have simply provided a substantive and adequate response to the questions asked. These are dead people – one would imagine you would have the numbers right. The FDA instead chooses to avoid answering by giving an excuse akin to “my dog ate my homework.”

This is yet another exhibit in the mountain of evidence as to why the FDA needs to be dismantled and rebuilt form the ground-up as an organization that actually serves the public interest and not that of pharma and its political handlers. ICAN intends to continue to shine a light on these issues until this comes to pass.

Make rest a goal. This goal is as important as your other life goals. Rest is necessary.

Treating rest like it's something optional will lead to burnout and long-term negative effects on your wellbeing.

Embrace the idea of "enough”. Stop putting pressure on yourself to do more. Schedule rest days and figure out what makes you feel fulfilled.

Make time to pursue activities that recharge your battery. Taking rest or simply doing nothing sometimes is good for you.

Put down your phone so you can simply focus on yourself and clear your mind.

Exercise Helps Heart Failure Patients

People diagnosed with heart failure may believe they need to be more gentle on themselves, but the opposite is true. In fact, physical activity may help extend their lives, according to a recent study.

The findings stem from an analysis of 20 trials involving more than 4,000 people with heart failure. Overall, exercise was associated with an 18% lower risk of death from all causes and an 11% lower risk of hospitalization, in comparison to not exercising, according to a U.K. research team.

Heart failure means the heart no longer pumps efficiently enough to meet the body's demands. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, and fluid buildup in the legs. Known also as congestive heart failure, it is one of the most common cardiac conditions.

Exercise may benefit heart failure patients in several ways. It improves physical fitness, boosts oxygen supply to the heart, reduces the risk of abnormal heart rhythms that can cause sudden death, and improves circulation.

While they can't prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship between exercise and survival, the researchers said benefits were seen in both men and women and regardless of heart failure severity or age.

Patients with heart failure should talk to their doctor about an exercise program tailored to their need. Enrolling in a cardiac rehabilitation program, in which you can exercise while your heart is monitored, can ease you into a program you can do by yourself.
