The myth of being cancer free
I was shocked and disappointed but not surprised. My blood tests and scans told me the cancer was back.
I neglected to practice the self-care I preached about and kept pushing my body despite all the messages it was giving me. That was August of 2015.
I worked really hard for 3 years and now all is well. I am confident that I broke the code on breast cancer recurrence, women’s biggest fear.

Study: Home BP Monitors Mostly Wrong

Canadian researchers say that home blood pressure monitors are wrong most of the time, and could cause problems for people who rely on them to make informed health decisions.

"Monitoring for and treating hypertension can decrease the consequences of this disease. We need to make sure that home blood pressure readings are accurate," said lead researcher Jennifer Ringrose of the University of Alberta.

Special: More Than 50% of Older Americans Fail to Get Enough Magnesium

Ringrose and her team tested dozens of home monitors and found they weren't accurate within 5 mmHg about 70% of the time. The devices were wrong by 10 mmHg about 30% of the time.

The researchers say steps can be taken to minimize inaccurate readings.

"Compare the blood pressure machine measurement with a blood pressure measurement in clinic before exclusively relying upon home blood pressure readings," advised Ringrose.

"What's really important is to do several blood pressure measurements and base treatment decisions on multiple readings. Taking home readings empowers patients and is helpful for clinicians to have a bigger picture rather than just one snapshot in time."

The researchers say it's difficult to determine precisely why the inaccuracies are occurring in home monitors because they don't have access to the various formulas the devices use in determining blood pressure — information which is considered proprietary and kept secret by the manufacturers.

The study was published in the American Journal of Hypertension.

What Causes Problems With Oxalate?​

Elevated levels of oxalate in the body can cause pain, inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, kidney stones, and more.

Most people focus on oxalates from dietary intake, but most oxalate in the body is produced by the body itself, and some people produce more than others.

Oxalates can also be produced in the body by fungal organisms.

Here are some of the likely contributors to oxalate formation in the body:

  1. Deficiencies of vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B6
  2. Genetic variants in the genes like AGXT, DAO, LDH, HGGA1, GRHPR
  3. Growth of fungal organisms in the body that produce oxalate
  4. High intake and conversion of substances that can convert to oxalate in the body, such as hydroxyproline and/or glycine (e.g. from collagen or gelatin), tryptophan, phenylalanine, aspartic acid, Aspratame (a combination of phenylalanine and aspartic acid), tyrosine, threonine, asparagine, creatine, purines, glucose, other carbohydrates
Here are possible causes of elevated oxalate absorption from dietary sources like spinach and beets:

  1. Intestinal hyperpermeability (leaky gut)
  2. Low dietary calcium (calcium binds to oxalates in the gut so that they are not absorbed)
  3. Fat maldigestion, which causes fats to bind to calcium, making it unavailable to bind to oxalates to prevent their absorption
Whether oxalate in the body forms calcium oxalate kidney stones depends mainly on the following factors:

  1. Dehydration (increases the likelihood of stone formation)
  2. Kidney dysfunction / disease
  3. Low sulfate in the kidneys (reduces kidney's ability to excrete oxalate)
  4. Oxidative stress in the kidneys (e.g. due to low levels of antioxidants like vitamins C and E in the kidneys)
Although vitamin C can be converted to oxalate, it seems more likely that vitamin C actually reduces the risk of oxalate stone formation.

One researcher asserted that his research indicated that vitamin C deficiency was the basic factor initating calcium oxalate crystal / stone formation anywhere in the body.

All published case reports connecting vitamin C administration with kidney stones occurred in the presence of numerous other factors that predispose to kidney stone formation (mainly pre-existing kidney disease).

So it does not make sense to blame the vitamin C as the sole cause of the stone formation in these cases.

When it comes to direct dietary sources of oxalate, like high-oxalate plant foods, the research suggests that reducing dietary oxalate intake makes little or no difference in the formation of kidney stones.

In a study of patients with unexplained recurrent calcium oxalate kidney stones, a diet with high amounts of water, adequate calcium, and low amounts of sodium worked better at reducing the urinary levels of oxalate than a low-oxalate diet.

Despite the scarcity of scientific evidence linking dietary oxalates to elevated oxalate in the body, many people report that they experience symptoms from high-oxalate foods and feel better when they avoid high oxalate foods.

This this may not actually be due to oxalates and may in fact be due to substances that frequently accompany oxalates, such as histamines and salicylates.

Salicylates are a type of polyphenol found in many healthy foods, but people that do not process polyphenols well can exhibit salicylate sensitivity.

This can be due to low levels of sulfate, which is needed to add sulfate to phenols to prepare them for excretion.

Low levels of sulfate can be due to genetic variants in the SUOX gene that codes for sulfite oxidase, an enzyme that forms sulfate.

It can also be due to low levels of the mineral molybdenum, which is the cofactor for the sulfite oxidase enzyme.

Low levels of exposure to sunlight can also cause low levels of sulfate since sulfate is formed in the skin upon exposure to sunlight.

In addition to impairing the body's ability to excrete phenols, insufficient levels of sulfate can also impair the kidneys' ability to excrete oxalate in urine.

Despite all of this, I am not saying that dietary oxalates are never the cause of symptoms. But to the extent that oxalates are a cause of symptoms, it is probably due to predisposing factors like those described above, not just the dietary intake of oxalates.

If you would like to sort out dietary issues like oxalates, histamines, salicylates, digestive health, etc, here are some steps you can take:

  2. Assess your B vitamin nutritional status with standard blood and/or a urine organic acid test.
  3. Test for intestinal hyperpermeability.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition in which blood clots occur in a deep vein in your body (usually the legs). If that clot travels to the lungs, it can cause a deadly pulmonary embolism.

Travel is one of the major factors that can contribute to DVTs, because sitting still for hours — whether in a car, train, or plane — can cause the blood to pool in your legs, and lead to the formation of clots.

When you travel by car, it is imperative to take advantage of every rest stop you come across to get out and stretch your legs. And if you’re on a train or plane, you need to get up and walk around frequently.

This sounds simple, but it’s your best protection.

If you’ve experienced any type of blood clot in the past, talk to your doctor about special precautions to take, such as wearing compression stockings. In addition, taking aspirin during your trip can help prevent blood clots.

With the upcoming Halloween holiday, maybe you are craving a chocolatey treat.

Well, look no further! Today we are sharing with you a delicious sweet treat that is packed with all the good stuff, nothing scary here!

The cacao in this recipe is a bit of a magical food. Not only is it used to make chocolate, but it's packed with antioxidants, minerals, and even some fiber to boot. Cacao flavanols promote the secretion of insulin, the hormone that shuttles glucose into your cells. This helps stabilize your blood glucose, preventing it from spiking. Cacao also contains some fiber, which slows the absorption of carbohydrates, thus stabilizing blood glucose levels and providing you with a more steady stream of energy throughout the day.

And how about those black cherries?

Cherries are hailed as one of the healthiest of all fruits, and in fact, they are one of the healthiest foods overall. They are packed with powerful antioxidants, potassium, and even melatonin.

They also contain a high concentration of anti-inflammatory agents to reduce the symptoms of arthritis, gout, and other joint-related problems.

Black cherries can boost your insulin levels, which in turn controls your blood glucose. This is one of the reasons why black cherries are recommended for people living with diabetes, especially as an in-between-meal snack.

So try out this smoothie recipe and enjoy a healthier treat this season!
Sweet Black Cherry & Chocolate Smoothie
Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 cup non-dairy beverage (oat milk, almond milk or soy milk)
  • 1 cup frozen sweet black cherries
  • 1 medium banana
  • 1 tbsp cacao
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 2 cups spinach cut into pieces
Directions:
  1. Blend all the ingredients in a high-power blender until smooth.
  2. Enjoy!

According to recent studies, at least 80% of children and adults in the United States have detectable levels of glyphosate (commercially known as Round-Up) in their urine.

It is the most widely used herbicide in the US - estimated around 300 million pounds per year. It is estimated that over 1.8 million tons of glyphosate has been sprayed in the US alone since 1974. (Close to 10 million tons world-wide)

And you don't have to spray it, or eat food intentionally sprayed with it, in order to be exposed.

It's in the soil, it can drift for up to 10 miles from where it was sprayed, it has contaminated water supplies, and it can attach to dust particles to be carried even further.

So why does this matter?

Because glyphosate has been linked to a long list of health consequences, including:

  • Endocrine (hormone) disruption
  • Birth defects & Miscarriages
  • DNA damage
  • Increased autism rates & learning disorders
  • Neurodegenerative diesease & Cognitive disorders
  • Kidney & livery damage
  • Oxidative-stress inducing
  • Cancer (you may have seen the court rulings on this)
  • Gut microbiome damage/alterations
