Happy Sunday, my fellow healthy living nut.

As I'm prepping for my next virtual BYOG Party in less than 2 weeks, I've been reminded of amazing research about the spine and posture.

Remember, this BYOG Party is all about how to upgrade your posture and spinal health, which is especially crucial as we age.

In my email two days ago, I mentioned little-known facts about neck and back pain, such as causing the 2nd highest number of doctor's visits...

Aaaand being responsible for the most non-cancer related opioid prescriptions in the US.

You can imagine how much I love seeing that. (sarcasm)

Well, I'm confident you understand how neck and back pain can be directly related to your posture and spinal health.

But, did you know this research conclusion from way back in 2004 and 2005:

"Older men and women with hyperkyphotic posture have higher mortality rates."

"Hyperkyphotic posture" meaning an excessive rounding of the mid back curve with forward head posture and "slumped" appearance. (It's also usually accompanied by rounded shoulders.)

"Higher mortality rates" meaning they die earlier than those who don't have a hyperkyphotic posture...

... And it could be as much as 15 years earlier!!

If that's not shocking enough, here's another kicker:

Hyperkyphotic posture was specifically associated with an increased rate of death due to atherosclerosis. (Meaning, cardiovascular disease.)

To leave no doubt about what this means, allow me to put this together for you.

Yes, poor posture and spinal dysfunction not only causes chronic neck and back pain (and all the health and life issues that come with that).

Poor spinal health and posture is ALSO correlated with a shortened lifespan and cardiovascular disease!

Let that sink in.

Hiya Jimi,​
I spent the last week in New York City with some of the incredible women in my Thrive Mastermind. I can’t tell you how grateful I am for them. It was a delicious time together, filled with rich conversations, sumptuous strategy sessions and equally delicious meals.

We made sure to nourish ourselves with some whole-food goodness. And we also indulged in decadent vegan cookies, sips of champagne, and biscotti by candlelight. I even snuck in my favorite faux fried chick’n sandwich.

In the early days following my diagnosis, that many treats in a short period of time would have sent me into a worry-spiral. Would that cookie be the catalyst for a health crisis? Would that champagne send my cancer into overdrive?

Thankfully, it’s a new day for me and I want to open up the curtains and let some light into your wellness journey, too.

Let’s say farewell to the pressure-packed, "do all the things" definition of self-care. That pressure pops up everywhere in our wellness journeys and can feel exponentially greater when you have a diagnosis to manage.

But any health plan that makes you feel like you’re only one chip away from disaster is a setup for failure. Often, when we start from an extreme place and seek extreme results, we set ourselves up for extreme disappointment.

Instead, let’s reimagine a new, gentle kind of self-care. One where a few healthy habits make our lives feel more steady. One where we feel nurtured—body, mind and spirit.

So here’s your new mantra: "I practice progress, not perfection in my pursuit of vibrant health and happiness."

As you step forward in self-care this week, remember: Simplicity. Ease. Grace.

Think again. Adele never gave permission to that company to use her name and image in a sales pitch for the supplement.

A new study published in the journal Future Cardiology exposed the need for tough pushback against this shady practice that endangers consumers' health. To help you figure out how to spot these fake endorsements, the researchers lay out four warning signs:
  1. Avoid products with ads that say “as seen on” or “as aired during” any TV show.
  2. Steer clear of ads showing the product next to a celebrity — it's a clue that the image has been dropped in. In most real endorsements, the celebrity will be interacting with the product.
  3. Look at the packaging. Low-quality presentation and misspellings are classic signs of fakes.
  4. If the product claims to be or to have been advertised on a news site, check the address of the website. For instance, the site for Forbes should be forbes.com, not phorbes.com.

The Reason Drugs Cause Problems

Most drugs work by poisoning enzymes and/or blocking receptors in the body. Enzymes are proteins that catalyze chemical reactions. For instance, digestive enzymes help to break down food so that the body can utilize nutrients to make energy and support other bodily functions.

Receptors are sites in the body molecules bind to in order to stimulate a process. In other words, after a receptor is bound by an element, it causes the body to initiate a response. In the thyroid gland, iodine binding to its receptor causes the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone.

Q: What is the link between low vitamin D and breast cancer and what are the root causes of low vitamin D if it is not a lack of sun?


Humans need sunlight for their cells to work. When we avoid nature, we are actually increasing our risk of some types of cancers. Our environment works with our bodies to provide optimal health. Breast cancer has a strong association with low levels of vitamin D and lack of sunlight. Some studies show breast and colorectal cancer incidence rates are highest in countries distant from the equator and lowest in near-equatorial countries. Why might that be? Because Vitamin D plays a huge supporting role in the immune system.
Benefits of Vitamin D:
  • Protects against getting 17 different types of cancer.
  • Has been shown to stop cancer cell growth.
  • Linked to inhibiting tumor blood vessel growth.
  • Directly involved in killing cancer cells.

Q: What role does the health of our liver have in estrogen dominance?

Reduced liver function may contribute to estrogen dominance due to its function in helping the body get rid of estrogen. The liver inactivates estrogen during Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the detoxification cycle. If the liver is too busy struggling with burdens like overconsumption of alcohol, a deficiency of B vitamins, or trying to detoxify drugs and other pollutants, it may not be able to break down estrogen through either one of the phases. This may prevent the excretion of estrogen via bile, urine, or the bowel and ultimately may cause excess estrogen.


Q: What is the link between synthetic hormone replacement and the risks of breast cancer development?

Synthetic HRT means that the molecule is similar, but not identical to the natural hormone they replace. The standard medical treatment until 2003 was synthetic hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with horse estrogen and artificial progestins. The Breast Cancer Detection Demonstration Project performed studies that showed that women who were on Premarin (synthetic HRT) had a rate of endometrial cancer that was five times higher than that of non-users. These findings rightfully led to HRT’s negative reputation. Progestins have also been found to cause issues in some women including liver malignancy, asthma, and pulmonary aggravation.

Q: We know that emotions and stress play a huge role in health. What are the top stress interventions you give to your patients?

Make peace with your past, read philosophy, meditate, EVOX biofeedback therapy, daily affirmations, Wim Hof Method of breathing, Solfeggio frequencies, spend time in nature, eat nutrient-dense foods, and have daily sunlight exposure.​

In May of 2021, scientists published a study in The Journal of Nutrition and Weight Loss that showed a group of previously overweight people had done the unthinkable:
They lost a striking amount of weight in just two months — then continued to lose weight for four more months. And they kept off every pound for two full years…and counting.
Now, that wouldn’t be that remarkable if it was one person. Or five. There are always outliers. But it was the average result among 238 people.
And it wasn’t a small amount of weight — it was three times clinically significant weight loss, on average.
I’m sure you know this, but while weight loss is common, lasting weight loss is vanishingly rare. In fact, statistics show that 99% of the time that people lose a significant amount of excess weight, they will gain it back again (and more) later on.
So, what were the people in this study doing?
A careful examination reveals that the program they followed had 3 critical elements that completely fly in the face of mainstream beliefs about what you should (and shouldn’t) do to lose weight.
But I guess that’s not surprising. To get results that are far out of the norm, you’d have to follow a path that deviates from the norm.

Go Beyond Guidelines for a Healthy Heart

Many doctors, and patients as well, take their health cues from new medical guidelines that government officials and private healthcare organizations release from time to time in an effort to engage the public on health issues of national concern.

While these recommendations can be helpful for most Americans, they often don’t go far enough — especially if a person wants to achieve optimal health or reverse existing ailments such as heart disease. Here are some suggestions if you’re interested in going beyond standard guidelines.

Diet. While the government suggests a balanced daily eating plan divided among fruit, grains, protein, vegetables, and oils, stick to just whole grains, limit red meat to once or twice a month, and get 80% of your menu from vegetables, fruits, beans, and legumes, which offer protein.

Cut Your Salt. Guidelines recommend people consume less than 2,300 mg of sodium (salt) — about 1 teaspoon. Although it will take time for your taste buds to grow accustomed to less-salty food, you’ll eventually adjust to less sodium. Eat whole, fresh foods and avoid packaged and processed foods, which are often packed with salt, not only for flavor but also as a preservative.

Exercise. The National Institutes of Health advises that some physical activity is always better than none. For major health benefits, work up to at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week. If you’ve been sedentary or have medical issues, consult your doctor first.

Blood Pressure. It’s important to keep your blood pressure within ideal limits, but sometimes doctors, patients, and even the government disagree. A healthy blood pressure is a systolic reading of 120 or less and a diastolic reading of 80 or less, which is commonly referred to “120 over 80.” Losing weight is the best way to lower blood pressure naturally, but people with high blood pressure may need medication as well.

Cholesterol. People with heart disease need to keep their total cholesterol at 150 or below, as research shows that people who belong to the “150 club” rarely suffer heart attacks. And always strive to lower your target numbers by natural means.
