It is easy to feel grateful when things are going well in our lives. But what about those challenging times, when nothing is going right — do you appreciate your abundance?

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, it is important to recognize that feeling grateful — no matter what is happening in your life — offers countless health benefits. When you actively cultivate gratitude and take time for self-care practices such as meditation, you open yourself up to true healing. You also expand your heart, increasing your innate love and compassion for yourself and others.

Modern-day research on the complex relationship between mind and body backs up what spiritual experts have known for millennia. For example, studies show that thoughts and feelings of gratitude bring about significant health benefits, including lowered stress hormones. And other studies reveal that regular meditation reduces inflammation, improves immunity, and strengthens areas of the brain related to empathy and emotional processing, among other benefits.

Conversely, studies show that feelings of pessimism and negativity fuel inflammation, harm DNA, speed up the aging process, and increase the risks of chronic diseases.

Innately, we know these findings to be true. How do you feel physically when you experience negative emotions, compared to feelings of gratitude, love, and compassion? The differences are obvious. Nevertheless, many of us remain prone to cycles of anxiety and negative thought patterns, dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

When life feels overwhelming — often made all the worse by the added pressures and stress of the holiday season — it can be easy to fall into negative thought patterns and ignore the positivity around you. But feeling grateful is more than being positive. It is about being honest and authentic, and finding joy in the little things, despite the chaos in life.

If you are battling extra stress this holiday season, it is essential to find time to yourself and home in on your feelings, emotions, and find peace in meditation or a walk to recenter and balance yourself.

Making space to feel grateful is important for your whole family. When we overflow our cups with unconditional love, gratitude, and compassion for all beings, we effortlessly offer this healing energy to ourselves and everyone around us.

This holiday season, regardless of how you celebrate, you can practice cultivating gratitude and appreciation — both to yourself and others.

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy, healthy, and vibrant Thanksgiving and winter holidays!

Yours in health,

Hi Jimi,

How would you like to wrap up your day with a delicious superfood elixir that helps fight inflammation, enables you to get a good night’s sleep, and is loaded with powerful antioxidants?

Check out my go-to elixir:

• ½ tsp of Turmeric

• ½ tsp Honey

• ¼ tsp Cinnamon Powder

• 1 cup of warm Coconut Milk

• Dash of Black Pepper

How to make it…

Combine all the ingredients, except honey in a saucepan. Turn the heat to medium. While heating, ensure to stir constantly and do not allow the mixture to boil. Add honey to taste.

The real star of this elixir is Turmeric!

Turmeric with its main active ingredient, curcumin, may be that one healthy addition to your evening routine you’ve been looking for, and can help you fight inflammation in your body.

It’s a wonderful after-dinner treat.

Why add Turmeric to your daily routine?

Here are some of the changes people are experiencing using turmeric:

• reduce aches and pains

• Increased memory, energy, and focus

• Lowers your risk of heart disease

• Helps fight depression

• Fights free radicals

It's okay to have off days. Some days you just feel terrible, no matter what you do.

Feeling down is totally normal. It doesn't mean that you're weak or your efforts toward healing are futile.

In fact, off days help you to build your resilience and patience. Embrace your negative emotions with compassion.

This practice becomes a bit easier when you remind yourself that emotions are temporary, and you won't always feel like this. You will feel better again soon.

And, you will feel a sense of pride knowing that you have the courage to work through difficult emotions and regulate your emotions effectively.

Long Work Hours Tied to Higher Stroke Risk

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

A review of self-reported work habits and heart health among roughly 144,000 French men and women between the ages of 18 and 69 showed that those who worked long hours had a 29% greater risk of stroke, and those who worked long hours for at least 10 years had a 45% greater risk of stroke.

For the purpose of the study, "long work hours" meant working more than 10 hours a day for at least 50 days out of the year.

Special: Top Cardiologist Reveals Secret for a Healthy Heart

In addition to completing questionnaires, all participants underwent medical interviews, during which investigators collected information on past stroke histories; body mass index (a standard measure of overweight/obesity); diabetes and high blood pressure status; and any family history of heart disease.

About 30% of the participants said they had worked long hours, while about 10% reported having worked long hours for 10 years or more. Roughly 1% of the respondents were characterized as stroke survivors.

In the end, the team found a strong association between working long hours and stroke risk for men and women alike. The link seemed stronger for people under the age of 50. The findings suggest greater attention is needed for modifying cardiovascular risk factors for those who work long hours.

The Ancients Were Right About Sage

Sage is a member of the mint family, and there are over 900 different species of sage.

It's originally native to the Mediterranean region, though today it's easily grown in containers and backyards worldwide.

(It grows as a perennial in Zone 5-8 and as an annual in zones that are cooler or more hot and humid than that.)

The oldest known records of sage being used for its healing powers date back over 4000 years, when the ancient Egyptians used it to treat infertility and serious diseases -- including epidemics like the plague.

Later on, in medieval Europe, it was used to strengthen the memory.

And it turns out these ancient cultures were right!

Because sage is jam-packed with antioxidants that protect you from serious diseases and improve your brain power and memory.

In fact, sage contains over 160 different polyphenols, which are plant-based compounds that act as antioxidants in your body.

Due to this, sage has many powerful health benefits.

Here are eight that have been backed by research...

The 8 Top Health Benefits of Sage

1) Boosts Brain Health, Memory, and Moods

Sage can help boost the memory and may even halt the breakdown of memory problems, as demonstrated in a study on Alzheimer's patients.

That's because it appears to stop the breakdown of the "memory" chemical messenger called acetylcholine.

Another study showed that in addition to helping memory, sage can boost mental alertness, elevate moods, and increase feelings of calm.

2) Lowers "Bad" LDL Cholesterol

High LDL or "bad" cholesterol is a top heart disease risk factor that affects 1 in 3 Americans.

Consuming sage tea two times daily was shown to lower LDL cholesterol while raising the "good" HDL cholesterol in only two weeks.

Taking sage extract also showed similar benefits.

3) Helps Support the Immune System

Because sage is so high in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds, it may be quite beneficial for helping the immune system overall, including against a range of different pathogens.

Many experts, for example, consider sage the ideal herb to take against colds and flu.

4) Helps to Manage and Prevent Diabetes

Sage contains compounds that may prevent major fluctuations of blood sugar by regulating and inhibiting the release of stored glucose in the liver.

This may help prevent type 2 diabetes and help those who have it manage the condition.

5) Helps with Skin Health and Anti-Aging

Free radicals can cause wrinkles and other signs of aging on the skin.

The powerful antioxidants in sage fight these free radicals and may help reverse and avoid the wrinkles and other damage.

Because sage is a powerful antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, and has strong anti-inflammation properties, it may also help combat a wide variety of other skin conditions.

6) May Fight Certain Cancers

Studies have shown that sage extracts may help fight cancers of the breast, cervix, colon, kidney, liver, mouth, and skin.

The sage extracts do so by not only thwarting cancer cell growth but also by promoting the death of cancer cells.

It should be noted these have been animal and test-tube studies so far, though the effects in humans are promising.

7) Helps Menopause Symptoms

Sage has long been used in different cultures to manage the symptoms of menopause, and science is increasingly verifying its value in that regard.

For example, one study showed sage may significantly reduce both the amount and intensity of hot flashes.

Another showed it may help reduce excessive sweating.

8) Improves Oral Health

Sage is a powerful antimicrobial that can help fight the microbes that promote dental plaque.

For example, research showed that a sage-based mouthwash killed the Streptococcus mutans bacteria that causes cavities.

Another study showed a sage-based essential oil stopped the spread of Candida albicans, a fungus also known to cause cavities.

Some Final Sage Advice

Again, these are just eight of sage's top benefits.

Because it is so high in polyphenols... because of its powerful antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties... the likely health benefits of sage extend far beyond this.

So, this is all to say...

Consider eating more of this "miracle" herb!

Eating it fresh may provide the most benefits, of course.

However, because sage is quite pungent, some may find routinely eating it fresh challenging.

That's a-ok, because using dried herbs in cooking provides benefits.

Now, while it is typically included in Thanksgiving stuffing, other ingredients in that dish are not typically the healthiest.

However, you can of course drink sage tea.

A healthy immune system is critical for healthy aging, but it often gets left out of the longevity conversation. This is an example of where a Functional Medicine approach can make a world of difference.

By looking at the bigger picture of how our biological systems are intimately connected, we can take steps toward restoring their function as a whole to prolong our healthspan and achieve vibrant health.
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Jeff Bland to discuss the importance of immune resilience and the many different factors that impact it. They tackle important topics like the gut-brain connection and how dysbiosis and leaky gut drive diseases of inflammaging.

Holistic Farming and
Improving the Food Chain
Hey Jim,

Your Immune System Starts with Good Food, which is why I am so excited to share this episode of Beyond Wellness with you.

In this episode, I am joined by Joel Salatin–American farmer, lecturer, author, and owner of Polyface Farm. He uses successful, unconventional agricultural methods which are “beyond organic”.

I'll start by talking us through the food journey and how a strong immune system starts with our food. We'll dive into segregation vs. integration in conventional vs. unconventional farming. The benefits of Polyface Farm's methods are obvious–Salatin chooses not to mass produce to maintain a holistic and environmentally friendly business model.

We shift into a discussion about quality and nutrient density of foods. We look at how some recent studies, documentaries, and food movements sweep over the fact that organic grass-fed meat is of a far superior quality to fast food meat. The quality of mass produced meats, fast food “meats”, and organic grass-fed meats are all different.

Much is covered during this podcast, but stay until the end to learn how our food-spending habits are changing with the times. While we used to spend 18% of our income on food and less on health, now it is the opposite. I see this need to spend more on health in direct correlation with the quality and nutrient density of today’s foods. Spend more money on good quality food that is high in nutrients and you’ll spend less on hospital bills, etc. I can't wait for you to listen to this episode!

The new generation of genetic tinkering (CRISPR, gene drives, RNAi, etc.,) pose an unprecedented threat to nature. We call it GMO 2.0.

In response, we are doing what we do best: alert the world and build a movement. We just launched the GMO 2.0 Campaign page and are enacting big plans to educate the public, build coalitions, and influence policy makers.

The most urgent and dangerous application of GMO 2.0 is the engineering of microbes.

Protecting the microbiome stands crucial as an immediate priority. A healthy microbiome is critical to everyone, from regenerative agriculture, healthcare practitioners, and environmentalists, to parents protecting their kids. We will engage our natural allies for rapid escalation to protect the microbiome.

Hey Jimi,
According to shocking new studies, popular devices like AirPods can literally MICROWAVE your brain…
While cell phone use is skyrocketing your kids brain tumor risk by an astonishing 400%.
This is because they generate powerful fields of radiation (called EMFs)...
That have been shown to “hijack” and seriously damage the human DNA.
The results?
Atrocious side effects like Alzheimer’s, infertility, depression, and even cancer.
And with the inevitable upcoming of 5G technology…
These nasty side effects are only going to become more popular, as the EMFs around us get stronger.
That’s why my friend and EMFs researcherTrevor King is going to host a FREE webinar where he’ll reveal the UNCENSORED truth about EMFs, like…
  • The #1 way to protect yourself from EMFs when using your phone or PC.
  • How your wifi is increasing by 5X the cancer risk in your kids.
  • 25 steps to make your home EMFs-proof.
  • Why using your phone 4 hours a day increases your risk of infertility by 85%.
  • Alzheimer's and 5G? The disturbing truth now revealed.

Plus, the revolutionary “gadget” that BLOCKS the EMFs in your home by 89% in just 24 hours (and the scientific proof that it really works).

Human affection takes many forms, with different cultures adopting distinct ways to greet, comfort, and show love between people. In Western culture, a hug signifies physical affection while being largely devoid of sexual or even romantic intentions. As a result, this intimate method of communication has become commonplace amongst family members, friends, and individuals of the same and different gender identity.

Although the origins of the hug as we know it today are complex and somewhat unclear, what is abundantly clear is that social hugging has increased dramatically in the last 50 years. More relaxed societal norms led to more relaxed methods of greeting and showing affection, ultimately culminating in the chiefly casual act hugs have become today.

Hugs and Mental Health—What’s the Link?

Some people love to give and receive hugs; others have a more difficult time with the inherent intimacy. But regardless of which camp you naturally fall into, research suggests that hugs can sustain beneficial effects on mental health by boosting mood, increasing trust, and providing support and comfort.

Hugs for Boosting Mood Following Conflict

Research is mounting on the mood-boosting potential of hugs. A 2018 study published in PLOS One sought to discover the effects of hugs on decreasing negative affect and improving positive affect following a period of conflict. Gathering data from 404 adult participants, results showed that receiving a hug was associated with “improved concurrent negative and positive affect and improved next day negative affect compared to days when conflict occurred but no hug was received.”

Furthermore, these results were controlled for numerous variables related to personal intersectionality, such as age, sex, race, and more.

Interestingly, the study also suggests that hugs are a form of interpersonal affection that verbal support can’t compete with. Lead researcher Michael L. M. Murphy references instances where verbal support does more harm than good for positive and negative affect, potentially due to unsolicited advice from family or friends that makes the individual in question feel incompetent or inferior. On the other hand, hugs are associated with having greater “responsiveness” than other forms of support—that is, “conveying understanding, validation, and care.”

The Potential Role of Oxytocin

More support for the stress-reducing and mood-boosting effects of hugs comes from the theory that hugging can stimulate the release of the neurotransmitter oxytocin. Oxytocin has long been labeled the “hug hormone” or the “cuddle hormone”; and while its mechanism of action is more complex than these terms can describe in name alone, they point to some key associations between physical intimacy and oxytocin release.

Oxytocin is highly associated with “pair bonding” between partners, and bonding between breastfeeding mother and child. Moreover, higher levels of oxytocin in the body are generally associated with greater relaxation, greater ability to trust others, and overall psychological stability.

Human Touch and Existential Fear

Aside from instances of interpersonal conflict, studies have also found hugs to help mitigate existential fear of mortality in individuals with low self-esteem. A series of studies published in Psychological Science found that even hugging an inanimate object, such as a stuffed animal, could partially reduce the fear response. In fact, participants who received a light and brief touch from the study’s experimenter reported less death anxiety on an associated questionnaire than those who didn’t.

Researchers hypothesize that individuals with low self-esteem may even seek out platonic touch when dealing with issues related to their own mortality.

Humans Want to Be Hugged

Well, not all of us—but as a population, it’s clear that we are desperate for physical kinship. The modern world is more connected than ever before, but simultaneously less physically intimate. And while language suits its purpose, it is not the only way to convey love and care. In fact, hugging likely offers something more “pure” than words, stimulating a windfall of beneficial physiological processes that boost mental and physical health in kind.

So, next time you’re feeling down and wondering how to improve the situation, perhaps the first port of call is to embrace your partner, child, or that huge teddy bear beside your bed.
