Throughout our lives we suffer numerous injuries, and the body automatically removes old, injured tissues and replaces them with new cells. In fact, the way the human body heals is pretty astonishing.

A simple cut in the skin magically disappears — and in just a few days there’s no sign of it at all. Even the skin over a massive surgical incision more or less goes back to the way it had been before, with minimal signs of damage. That’s because the human body is designed to maintain a healthy structure well into old age.

Part of that design is the process of healing injured tissues and replacing aging cells. While we still don’t understand everything about this process, medical research continues to provide valuable clues about how it works.

To really appreciate the healing process, it’s important to know a little bit about biochemistry. Oxidants are compounds in which molecules have one more proton than electrons, meaning that they take electrons from other molecules. Oxidant molecules are highly reactive and can damage tissues and cells as they search for an extra electron. The body can become unbalanced if it has too many oxidants. Many chronic illnesses are linked with this kind of oxidative stress.

Antioxidants are compounds that have a full complement of electrons. They can donate an electron to an oxidant molecule, thereby neutralizing them. Examples of antioxidants include vitamins C and E, which are considered essential elements because human beings can’t live without them but can’t produce them in our bodies. Therefore, we must get them from our diet or risk health detriments.

For example, lack of vitamin C can cause a disease called scurvy, in which the body’s connective tissues begin to fall apart. This happens because connective tissue is formed primarily of collagen, which requires adequate vitamin C. Lack of vitamin C causes collagen to disintegrate — gums will bleed, teeth will fall out, and bleeding will occur. Those are all symptoms of scurvy.

Negative thoughts trigger unpleasant emotions and reinforce negative stories in your subconscious mind.

And as a result, over time, you will end up believing that those stories are true.

Bedtime is a great time to reprogram your mind. Always take time to clear your mind and repeat positive affirmations before going to sleep.

Use visualization to feed your mind with positive ideas. Allow yourself to fully embrace the feelings of gratitude and peace.

These positive thoughts will help you bring about a shift in your inner world and consequently in your outer world as well.

In medical school, students learn very little about nutrition. In fact, I recall that my class received only one three-hour lecture on the subject during our entire four years of medical school.

And those three hours were spent reviewing the history of some nutritional diseases, including scurvy (vitamin C deficiency) and beriberi (vitamin B1 deficiency).

But we were told that in modern times such nutritional deficiencies only occur in third-world countries because of a lack of food. We were also taught that people did not need to supplement their diet with vitamins and minerals because our food supply provided all the nutrients that we need.

After studying holistic medicine for more than 25 years and testing thousands of patients’ nutritional status, I can assure you what I was taught in medical school was wrong.

Unfortunately, medical schools are still teaching the same false information about nutritional diseases. I know this because medical students who do rotations with me at my practice keep me informed about what they are learning.

With regard to teaching about nutritional medicine, nothing much has changed over the last few decades.

Sleep is essential for good health, and too little of it may shorten your life, according to a recent study.

REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is when dreams occur and the body repairs itself. For every 5% reduction in REM sleep, mortality rates increase 13% to 17% among older and middle-aged adults.

A recent study followed more than 2,600 men, average age 76, for a median of 12 years. Researchers also collected data on nearly 1,400 men and women, average age 52, who were part of another study and were followed for a median of 21 years.

In both groups poor REM sleep was tied to early death from any cause, as well as death from cardiovascular and other diseases. The findings show the importance of not just total sleep time, but also the right balance of the different stages of sleep.

Compassion, kindness, and patience will help you to let go of unwanted thoughts more easily.

Sometimes these thoughts are so disturbing and messed up that we hate ourselves for even thinking such thoughts.

It's important to remember that we don't always control what thoughts come to our minds.

However, we do have control over how we choose to respond to our thoughts.

You can choose to not let fear drive your life. The intrusive thoughts are not your reality.

When an intrusive thought comes up, take a pause, and tell yourself it's not your fault you're having that thought.

View it as an opportunity to reinforce what you really value in life.

Burn Calories During TV Time

In 1940, Alvin “Shipwreck” Kelly sat atop a 225-foot flagpole in Atlantic City for 49 days and one hour. That took super-stamina and a skinny backside.
But according to one study, sitting in front of the TV doesn't demand any physical prowess — and it's far worse for you than sitting at work.

Columbia University Medical School researchers found that participants who watched TV for four or more hours a day had a 50% greater risk of cardiovascular events and death over the course of the eight-and-half year study, compared to those who tuned in less than two hours daily. In contrast, those who sat the most at work had the same health risks as those who sat the least.
Why is sitting at work for six to eight hours less harmful than four hours a day of TV watching?
When you watch TV, you don't move much — except to reach for a bowl of chips or ice cream. You may not even talk.
If you weigh 150 pounds, you're burning 68 calories per hour. But on the job, you'll burn 102 calories an hour while talking, and 170 calories an hour doing moderate work.
To increase your calorie burn while watching TV, try riding a stationary bike. Here are some other things you can do to feel the burn:
• Sit up straight. Good posture demands engaged muscles.
• Laugh. Just 10 to 15 minutes of laughter can burn 10 to 40 additional calories.
• Drink water. One study found that drinking 16 ounces of water increases your metabolic rate by 30%, peaking at around 30 minutes after drinking.
