Contrary to popular belief, women cannot follow the same health and fitness protocols as men and expect to see the same results. Unlike men, women in their reproductive years have their hormones to take care of, and their rise and fall throughout the month impact everything from energy to focus, mood, metabolism, and the ability to adapt to good-for-you stressors like exercise or fasting.
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with holistic health expert, and one of the world’s leading experts on fasting, Dr. Mindy Pelz to talk about the benefits of fasting and how women, in particular, can cultivate a fasting routine in a way that honors their hormones.
They also discuss the menstrual cycle and life phases that would benefit from fasting the most and when to pump the breaks on longer fasts and fasting in general (e.g., pregnancy, breastfeeding, eating disorders, and thyroid conditions).

Hello Jimi,

We couldn’t think of a better way to start off a new calendar year than focusing on how your breath supports the health of your whole body.

The powerful reality is when your body has more oxygen, your health improves.

Here is a simple 1-minute test called the Body Oxygen Level Test which provides incredible insight into your body’s energy levels as well as cues to your overall health.

STEP ONE: Take a normal breath in through your nose and allow a normal breath out through your nose.

STEP TWO: Pinch your nostrils shut and hold your breath.

STEP THREE: Count the number of seconds until you feel the strong desire to breathe. (Don’t push your body to your absolute breath hold limit - just when you have a strong desire to breathe.)

STEP FOUR: Release and resume normal breathing. Your breathing should be normal and calm. (If you’re breathing hard, you’ve held your breath for too long).

Note how many seconds you comfortably held your breath.

A healthy, vital, energetic body is able to hold for at least 40 seconds.

If you got less than 25 seconds, it indicates poor breathing (low energy/vitality).

Poor breathing (which the majority of people have) is a major cause of chronic low energy levels, and chronic anxiety.

We’re incredibly excited to share an interesting and powerful opportunity to connect with energy expert Ari Whitten on January 5th at 4:30 pm PT to learn about this important topic and how you can begin to use specific breathing practices to support increasing oxygen levels to your cells and improving your health (just by using proper breathing techniques).

Ari will be going over the research, science and so much more. I hope you will consider joining us live, Thursday, Jan. 5th at 4:30 pm PT | 7:30 pm ET (registration is complimentary).

We haven’t come across any type of breathwork that we didn’t think was helpful. Every culture has their version - so we hope you will take the time to join us.

Hi Jimi,

Happy New Year!

I hope that 2023 will bring you happier days and even better health!

And in keeping with Goodness Lover tradition, we want to start the year right with more ways to improve your gut health.

We always talk about what you should (and shouldn’t) eat.

But did you know that having a healthy gut is more than just what you’re eating?

It’s a whole way of living that will affect your microbiome—including your movements (or lack thereof).

So for our first YouTube video of the year, you’ll find the 6 best exercises that will improve your gut health.

The trick here is finding the right balance between what is good for your gut and what you can realistically achieve.

Yours in health,

Little known fact: 99% of laundry detergents are chock full of harmful chemicals that impregnate your clothes and rub off into your skin…

… Finally, these chemicals can enter your bloodstream and wreak havoc inside your body.

One type of chemical is called phthalates.

Studies show phthalates produce more and BIGGER fat cells once exposed.

Scientists also found they can interfere with metabolism and appetite, making it more likely to overeat and gain weight…

… Making phthalates the #1 obesogen to AVOID.

And to make matters worse, phthalates are just one of the many health-wrecking chemicals in most store-bought detergents…

More than one-third of America's citizens do not get enough sleep. Here's why that is bad news.

Experts generally recommend that adults get at least seven hours of sleep each night. Failure to do so not only leaves you tired but also can increase your risk of developing serious health conditions.

Following are some of the overlooked - and often surprising - ways that a lack of sleep can make your life miserable.

Be Well,

1. It Makes You Crave Carbs...

When we don't sleep well, it throws our endocannabinoid system out of whack. This system helps regulate several functions, from immune response to appetite.

When insufficient sleep messes with the endocannabinoid system, the result is an increased desire for high-fat, high-starch, sugary foods.

2. It Raises Your Risk Of Heart Disease...

When we sleep, our blood pressure drops.

However, if you are sleeping just a few hours, your blood pressure doesn't dip for as long. Experts say that can have a negative effect on the cardiovascular system and may raise your risk of heart disease and stroke.

3. It Ages Your Body...

Research findings of Judith Carroll, assistant professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral science at the UCLA Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology, says:

"Our data support the hypothesis that one night of not getting enough sleep in older adults activates important biological pathways that promote biological aging."

4. It Increases Anxiety...

Lack of sleep and anxiety have a destructive, mutually reinforcing relationship. People who are anxious have a harder time falling asleep and staying asleep.

Natural Health Tip:

All plastic cups, bowls, and water bottles - anything plastic that you put liquid into, since the liquid is proven to leach out the chemicals from the plastics, and yes even BPA-free plastics leach all kinds of chemicals into liquids.

These plastics must go. It’s easy, replace them with glass, and this step is done, you’ve now just eliminated one of the biggest cancer-causing culprits in your home, and it is fast, easy, and affordable. Again, in any plastic cup or container that you put any leftover food or liquid in, the best to replace it with is glass.

Now for cookware, get rid of your typical nonstick frying pans since they also leach carcinogens into your food, and replace them with ceramic, or stainless steel.

How to Deal With Stress and Feeling Overwhelmed
Hey Jim,

There are two main categorties of stress. The first is acute stress, which can actually be good for us! Part of the reason we can feel anxious about a problem is because the body wants us motivated to get off our butt to solve the problem. However, chronic stress is where we start to see a lot more negative health effects, from digestive issues, to teeth grinding, insomnia, and more. And unfortunately, chronic stress is a pretty pervasive issue nowadays.

Today Evan and I dive into the gut-brain relationship and how it pertains to stress, along with other approaches for managing chronic stress. I know a lot of us have been feeling ovrewhelemed lately so I hope this episode helps bring you some calm!
