Three months after ICAN submitted a formal petition showing the startling risk/benefit profile of COVID-19 vaccines in children and demanding the FDA revoke their use in children, the FDA filed a response doubling down on its junk science.
In July of this year, we told you that as part of our ongoing efforts to demand recognition of the true risks that COVID-19 vaccines pose to children, ICAN’s attorneys filed a formal petition with the FDA demanding that it revoke the Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) granted to Pfizer and Moderna for use of their COVID-19 vaccines in children ages 5 to 11 and 6 to 11, respectively. As we explained then, one of the benefits to filing this type of petition is that the FDA is legally required to respond with a formal written response. They cannot choose to ignore a petition.
After three months, the FDA finally sent a shameful response to ICAN’s petition. Filled with faulty science, it amounts to a total denial of the available data showing the lack of benefit and the high risk associated with these vaccines for children.
For starters, incredibly, the FDA claims an emergency has and continues to exist (thereby justifying the EUA for children), but yet the FDA does not refute the data showing that 5-14 year-olds have a one-in-a-million chance of dying with COVID. Instead, the FDA defends the “emergency” designation by essentially redefining “emergency,” stretching the term to the point of absurdity. Worse, the data the FDA relies on fails to distinguish between outcomes “with” COVID and “from” COVID (which even Fauci has admitted “overcounts” the number of children hospitalized, for example).
Additionally, despite our petition demonstrating that vaccine efficacy is less than the required 50% and that the risk/benefit analysis used by the FDA was fundamentally flawed and heavily exaggerated risks of COVID-19, the FDA buried its head in the sand and completely ignored the data. The FDA’s response relied on poorly designed and heavily biased studies, which did not refute anything in our petition. Equally disturbing, the FDA completely brushed over the very real and concerning data indicating that nearly 5% of those hospitalized with myocarditis after the Moderna vaccine died.
The FDA’s response is, to be generous, woefully and disturbingly insufficient. You can read it for yourself here. Unfortunately, the response is all too reminiscent of the FDA’s equally contrived response to ICAN’s prior formal petition demanding the FDA revoke the EUAs it granted for use of COVID-19 vaccines in 12-15 year-olds. But despite that, these petitions remain a critically important tool because they allow the public to see the FDA’s response, in its own words, when presented with data demonstrating the errors of its ways. It also adds to the proof ICAN is building to hold our public officials accountable.
As always, ICAN and its legal team will continue to be persistent in our efforts to demand sound science and rational decision making from the FDA, especially for children.

I Healed My Migraines With This Simple Practice [VIDEO]

Hi Jim,

16 years ago, I had an unexpected personal healing breakthrough -- and it happened over the phone! Let me explain...

Let’s start today’s newsletter with a question: How many chemical reactions happen every second in the human body? A million? Nope. A trillion? Guess again. The answer is 37 billion billion. That’s 27 zeroes!

It is beyond our minds’ ability to comprehend the complexities of the human organism. This magical dance of molecules and chemical reactions underlies all health, disease, and aging. Learning how to fine-tune these reactions to facilitate healing, repair, and regeneration is at the heart of Functional Medicine.

It’s also the subject of my new book, Young Forever, which hits the shelves in less than a month. I’ve spent more than 30 years as both a doctor and a patient learning what works and what doesn’t when it comes to longevity and healthspan. I’ve seen the incredible inner workings of the human body up close, and I’ve read the scientific literature. I’ve dived deep into what makes us healthy and what causes disease. In Young Forever, I talk about what I’ve learned and how living a balanced lifestyle is one of the major keys to aging well.

The Importance of a Balanced Life

As we discussed in this newsletter a few weeks ago, the hallmarks of aging are how our biology becomes out of balance. Conventional medicine describes the what: what disease, what pathway is dysfunctional, what drug to take. The model of Functional Medicine guides us to the why: to the root causes of diseases and aging. Many longevity research efforts focus on just treating the hallmarks of aging, without treating their underlying causes. That’s where Functional Medicine comes in.

But what causes the hallmarks in the first place? In a word, imbalance—too much bad stuff, not enough good stuff. But the beauty of the human body is that we don’t have to look at every gene, protein, metabolite, or microbe. We simply need to know what creates imbalance or balance—and thankfully it is not millions of things; it is a few simple things.

In fact, we can ask just two questions to figure out what’s causing dysfunction in the body’s ecosystem. First, what do you need to get rid of that is causing the imbalance? Second, what do you need to put into the system to help restore balance?

What to Reduce or Eliminate to Create Health

Our biology is designed to function in very particular ways. The fact that 93 percent of Americans are metabolically unhealthy and suffering from some degree of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes (which is at the root of rapid aging and heart disease, cancer, and dementia) is largely due to the burden of exposing ourselves to too many things our bodies were never meant to handle.

So what do we need to reduce or eliminate to create health? Things like:

  • Our modern, ultra-processed diet loaded with sugar, flour, and unhealthy oils
  • Environmental toxins
  • Gut-damaging medication, including unnecessary and over-prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and acid blockers
  • Allergens and food sensitivities
  • Inactivity
  • Chronic stressors of modern life (both physical and psychological)
  • Social isolation and loneliness
What to Increase or Add to Create Health

The flip side of the biological aging coin is that with our modern lifestyles, most of us simply aren’t getting enough of the good things we need—the things that are designed to help us thrive. And just as much as we need to cut out the bad, we must increase the good to be able to truly live happy, meaningful, and fully engaged lives.

So what do we need to increase or add to create health? What are the ingredients for health? The list includes:

  • Whole, real, unprocessed foods
  • Sustainably farmed, grass-fed, pasture-raised meats and eggs
  • Wild-caught, cold-water fatty fish
  • Phytonutrients and micronutrients (e.g., vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, B vitamins)
  • Adequate and ideal light exposure at the right times of day
  • Optimal hydration
  • Exercise and movement
  • Sleep and healthy circadian rhythms
  • Community, love, and belonging
  • Meaning and purpose

Why COVID Patients Develop Blood Clots

Researchers have discovered why some patients with COVID-19 develop life-threatening blood clots.

Scientists from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland analyzed blood samples taken from COVID-19 patients in the Beaumont Hospital Intensive Care Unit in Dublin and found irregularities in the levels of certain elements.

The clotting protein called von Willebrand Factor, or VWF, and its regulator called ADAMTS13 were disrupted in patients with severe COVID. These patients had higher levels of the clotting protein and lower levels of the anti-clotting ADAMTS13 factor than patients without COVID.

“We looked at the markers in the blood of these patients and tried to understand what was underpinning the blood clotting,” said Dr. Jamie O’Sullivan, the lead author of the study. “We observed elevated levels of the protein VWF.”

O’Sullivan said that the sticky protein normally prevents people from bleeding excessively by binding blood platelets, but in COVID patients, levels of VWF were up to six times higher than normal.

Reducing the levels of this protein could be therapeutic for patients, she said, reducing the risk of COVID-related blood clots that could lead to life-threatening strokes, hearts attacks, and pulmonary embolisms.

Our bodies need adequate amounts of salt and water to maintain good health. And we don’t have any storage facilities for either.

The human body is made up primarily of water. About 60%-70% of the body is water. And 70%-80% of the brain is water. Therefore, small changes in hydration status can have drastic repercussions.

In fact, the human body is constantly losing water. Breathing exhales water vapor, causing water levels to decline. Water is also lost through urination and defecation; it even evaporates off the skin.

More water is lost in warmer environments, at high altitudes, when the humidity of the environment is very low (such as in the desert), and during exercise. In addition, anything that increases the heart rate can cause water loss.

As noted, humans can’t store water. Therefore, we need to continually supply the body with more water to maintain proper hydration.

Because water is so important, the body has tight regulatory mechanisms to control fluid status. One of the primary methods is through hormonal production in the pituitary gland — specifically, the posterior pituitary — where the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) is secreted.

One job of ADH is to signal the kidneys to reabsorb water when the body is dehydrated. So, in a dehydrated state, the pituitary gland will increase the release of ADH to help the body minimize the consequences of dehydration.

Signs of dehydration include dry, flaky skin; sunken eye sockets; a dry tongue; and ridging in the nails. A thorough physical exam can identify many of the signs of dehydration.

In this week’s vlog, I give you a window into a current situation in my food journey that feels “off” to me … but I’m not yet willing to change it. Sometimes an issue comes up in our lives and we consider addressing it, but ultimately we don’t. Or we don’t yet. Why? It’s a state of not being willing.
Using my own situation as an example, I describe a couple of ways to honor this incubation period and dig deeper into what might be going on so that we can stay curious and open to potential change.

Hi Jimi,

Health challenges can be so challenging, and will often push us to our edge – whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually.

But they can also be a great teacher for us, showing us where we need to make some changes, or do some deeper healing work.

In this week’s episode of The Psychology of Eating Podcast, Marc David works with 56-year old Lynn who lost mobility after becoming injured, and has been struggling with weight gain and digestive issues ever since.

Previously, Lynn was very active, and had always enjoyed helping others.

But since her injury, Lynn is frequently in physical pain, and can’t do what she previously found easy.

Many in Lynn’s position would understandably become depressed. And while Lynn has certainly gone through her own ‘dark night of the soul,’ she has ultimately come through the experience and learned so much – about letting go of perfectionism, setting boundaries, and accepting “what is.”

As Marc points out in this episode, our injuries and illnesses remind us of our mortality, and they almost always profoundly change our relationship with our bodies and our lives.
