Light in Bedroom Linked to Hypertension, Diabetes

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Keeping your bedroom dark may significantly lower your odds of developing major health problems.

In a recent study, older men and women who used night lights, or left their TV, smartphone, or tablet on in the room were more likely to be obese and have high blood pressure and diabetes compared to adults who were not exposed to any light during the night.

Special: Vitamin D: Your Secret Weapon Against Viruses and Germs

"Maybe even a small amount of light at night can be harmful," said lead author Minjee Kim, M.D., assistant professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine's Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine in Chicago.

"Light actually turns off some of the parts in the brain that tell our body it's the daytime versus nighttime. The circadian signal is weakened, and over time, that has implications for our health."

Kim and her colleagues looked at more than 550 participants in the Chicago Healthy Aging Study. The 63- to 84-year-olds wore devices that measured the amount of light in their bedrooms over a week.

Fewer than half had five hours in complete darkness as they slept, the study found. The others were exposed to some light even during the darkest five hours of the day — usually in the middle of their sleep at night.

The researchers said they didn't know if obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure prompt people to sleep with a light on or if the light led to development of the conditions. But, they added, some people with foot numbness due to diabetes may want to use a night light to help prevent falls when they have to use the bathroom at night.

-Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the US
-Approx. 52,000 people will die from colorectal cancer in 2023
The information on major media during Colon Cancer Awareness Month primarily serves to funnel people into colonoscopies, but there's so much more you need to know. That's why I'm sharing a special interview with you today with colon health expert Dr. Alan Desmond.
Dr. Alan Desmond is certified in both Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine, he completed his training in Ireland and Oxford.
Dr. Desmond specializes in colon health and is a advocate of a whole-food plant-based nutrition for optimal health and colorectal cancer prevention.
In our interview we discuss foods that cause and increase your risk for colon cancer, the truth about colonoscopies, stool testing, improving your microbiome, and so much more!
I'm thankful for Dr. Desmond and his brilliant work in this field.
This is an incredibly informative interview. Enjoy!

More and more people are confused about protein intake than ever before. For years, we’ve been told that too much protein in the diet can lead to an increased risk for cancer, metabolic disease, and other chronic illnesses. As more research comes out, however, health experts are beginning to change their tune around dietary protein and now consider it an essential nutrient for muscle health, weight loss, balanced blood sugar, and longevity.

Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Donald Layman, a pioneer in establishing optimal protein and amino-acid requirements for chronic disease prevention, performance, and longevity. Dhru and Dr. Layman discuss the importance of dietary protein for blood sugar control, building muscle mass, weight loss, and preventing age-related loss of lean tissue. Dr. Layman also shares his groundbreaking research on the effects of the amino acid leucine on muscle protein synthesis, concerns around mTOR, the relationship between resistance training and protein, and so much more.

Get Calories Early in the Day

By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs

Sesame Street's Cookie Monster once appeared on a broadcast of “The Wilder Project” on Sports Illustrated's SITV. When asked who his favorite quarterback is, he chose Baker Mayfield.

“How could me not go with guy named Baker?” he asked.

Special: The Ultimate Solution to a Peaceful Night's Sleep

We love bad grammar and all, but we're not really cookie fans unless they're made with whole grain flour, no added sugar, and nuts and seeds.

And we can't totally agree with the book “Cookie Monster's Good Time to Eat,” in which he touted breakfast in the morning, but cookies anytime.

Then again, he didn't have access to the research Dr. Mike and Dr. Michael Crupain did for their book “What to Eat When.”

For example, the smart move is to eat most of your daily calories before 2 p.m., so breakfast cereal or a salad for dinner is a really good choice. And try to put at least 13 hours between your last meal of the day and breakfast the next morning.

What are the rewards? A lower risk of everything from diabetes to cancer, easier weight management, and feeling younger.

Research confirms this. One study presented at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting found that eating later in the day increases body fat and promotes weight gain.

Another outlined how eating during only eight of every 24 hours reduces obese mice's breast cancer risk and tumor growth to levels of lean mice.

So consider eating dinner for breakfast, and discover the benefits of what to eat when.

Poor Nutrition Hampers Sex Life

By Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, MDs

Americans need to eat more fruits and vegetables. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says only about 10 percent of people get the recommended amounts: one and a half to two cups of fruit, and two to three cups of vegetables daily.

Special: The Most Anti-Inflammatory Food in the World – Onion, Pepper, or Pineapple?

But did you know that according to the General Social Survey from the National Opinion Research Center, Americans are having less sex than ever? Is there a connection?

Overall health depends on eating more produce, and a healthy sex life is influenced by overall health. So a lack of broccoli — and an associated increase in the prevalence of obesity and diabetes — may be a big factor in the declining frequency of sexual relations.

And it's not just among baby boomers. Eighteen percent of women and 28 percent of men ages 19 to 29 report having had no sex in in 2018, more than double the number in 2008.

Research shows that sexual satisfaction and contentment within relationships is strongly associated with the quality of communication between partners.

So whatever your age, turn off Facebook, put down the phone, and ask someone to share veggie-loaded Thai or Vietnamese food with you. It may have the spice you need.

Are you tired of coughing, sneezing, and struggling to breathe due to chest and throat congestion? According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the United States, affecting over 50 million people. If you're one of them, we have good news: relief may be closer than you think.

Our recent article, "Onion: Fastest Way to Eliminate Throat and Chest Congestion" explores the surprising benefits of this humble vegetable when it comes to clearing up respiratory issues. Onions contain a compound called quercetin, which has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce congestion and promote easier breathing.

In addition to their anti-inflammatory effects, onions are also rich in antioxidants, which can help boost the immune system and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Whether you're dealing with seasonal allergies, a cold, or something more serious, incorporating onions into your diet or using them as a natural remedy can be a game-changer.

Don't suffer through another day of congestion and discomfort. Visit our website to read the full article and learn more about the benefits of onion for respiratory health.

Hey, Jimi!

In this episode, I am speaking with Harvard researcher, William Li, MD about whether there is a way to eat that fights cancer and the new science of using specific foods to enhance fat loss by speeding up your metabolism.

In this podcast, Dr. Li and I discuss:
  • The research on dietary strategies to help “starve” cancer into retreat by cutting off its blood supply.
  • The 300 foods that can not only nullify cancer but also prevent vision loss and grow new blood vessels to heal your wounds.
  • The strange case of a specific food that has amazing research to support its claim to profound health benefits (including being one of the most potent anti-cancer foods known!), yet has been widely demonized, causing people to fear it.
  • William’s take on what happens to our metabolism that causes fat gain, and what we can do to reverse stubborn weight gain as we age.
  • Simple methods to activate your metabolism and burn more fat.
  • The benefits of “brown fat” for fat loss and the importance of intermittent fasting.
  • Using cold water exposure and specific culinary spices for indirect fat loss and a return to normal metabolic functioning.

This might be a sensitive topic for some but it's nothing to be ashamed about...

In fact, 70% of women of all ages rarely or never climax during physical intimacy.

So you can imagine our surprise when a good friend and colleague shared a vulnerable story about how she’d been struggling with physical intimacy issues, but had recently discovered a simple way to unlock female pleasure centers…

See turns out, this inability to climax is mainly due to a misalignment of the female anatomy caused by our modern lifestyles...

But there's a simple yet bizarre upper body alignment technique that unlocks female pleasure centers and allows women to achieve orgasm with their partner.

At first, we thought it was too good to be true.

But thousands of women are now experiencing the best intimate moments of their lives thanks to what Alex has shown them.

One woman reports, “It’s made everything fresh and new in our relationship.”

So you can imagine how excited we were to share this with you!

Tap here to find out how to do it yourself…

Hi jimi,

Cancer affects so many and there isn't a single root cause to point the finger at...

In search for answers Nathan Crane interviewed 31 of the leading researchers and scientists and this weekend only, you can watch it all on-demand.

>> Click here to request access

Don't have time to watch the interviews? Then get these two ebooks (you'll have to request them individually):

Because cancer is such a big question mark, this series "The Missing Link", will cover many, relevant topics - not just for cancer but for health in general.

When it comes to nutrition and lifestyle, you'll learn from familiar speakers like:

  • Dr. Dean Ornish
  • Dr. John McDougall
  • Dr. Joel Kahn
  • Dr. Michael Klaper
  • Ocean Robbins
  • Marisa Peer
But nutrition is only one piece of the puzzle.

That's why I'm excited to see what the other speakers have to share on topics like:

  • How to Eliminate Cancer-Causing Toxins From Your Home & Life
  • Women’s vs. Men’s Cancer: How to Prevent and Treat Gender-Specific Cancers
  • The Limitations of the Current Medical Model
  • The Missing Link Between Conventional and Alternative Modalities
  • Creating an "Anti-Cancer Lifestyle"
>> Click here to request on-demand access - this weekend only

Considering this is a ton of content and includes speakers from various backgrounds (some of which you may not agree with), I suggest picking and choosing the interviews that resonate with you the most and skip the rest. I hope you'll find some inspiration and new ideas and remember to also enjoy the weekend, get some fresh air and nourish your body! For me that means heading outside with our young daughter and admiring the cherry blossom :)

Women’s Heart Disease Still Undertreated

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

In the 1990s, major studies demonstrating that symptoms of heart disease in women were overlooked shifted a focus on this group and helped spread awareness that this ailment was not only the No. 1 killer of men, but of women as well.

While some progress has been made, a recent study finds that among adults ages 18 to 55 seen in the emergency department for chest pain, women were triaged less urgently and waited longer to be seen or to be hospitalized for observation to diagnose a heart attack.

Special: The Shocking Truth About Magnesium

This is despite the fact that about one-third of women who were hospitalized for a heart attack in the past two decades were under the age of 55, a proportion that has grown in recent years, says the study, which was presented at a recent session of the American College of Cardiology.

If you’re a woman, and especially if you have risk factors for coronary heart disease, you need to make sure that your doctor takes you seriously, no matter what your age.

I'll even discuss desserts!

Learn how to manage ketosis at home, with less trouble, cost, and complexity than you might think.

Quest for the Cures: FINAL CHAPTER
There’s a quiet health revolution brewing right now, but it’s getting louder and louder every day. And it involves one of our greatest foes on the planet… cancer.

Chances are if you or a loved one has ever been diagnosed with cancer, the first words out of the mouth of the oncologist are “chemo” or “radiation” or “surgery.” Those words are enough to strike fear in anyone! Our friends Ty and Charlene Bollinger have done it again with their new docuseries, Quest for the Cures: FINAL CHAPTER. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to learn the truth about cancer. Don't miss this opportunity, airing March 29 - April 7.
