Do you have a blunted or dysregulated circadian rhythm?

Your circadian rhythm, sometimes referred to as the "rest-activity" circadian rhythm, is the pattern of activity and rest that your body goes through each day, affecting how well you sleep, repair cells and tissues, make hormones, remove pathogens and toxic substances, and more.
Even if you are not aware of having a blunted or dysregulated circadian rhythm, in my experience almost everybody does (including me much of the time), and this affects everything pertaining to health, beginning with sleep.
So I added a section called "Blunted or Dysregulated Circadian Rhythm" to the "48 Potential Causes of Poor Sleep Most People Have Never Considered" (was 47+ causes) article.
Better understanding how your circadian rhythm works and developing a greater commitment to maintaining a strong, well-regulated circadian rhythm are two of the easiest, lowest-hanging, most impactful steps you can take right now for better health, slower aging, and of course better sleep.
You can use the Table of Contents at the top of the article to jump straight to the new "Blunted or Dysregulated Circadian Rhythm" section of the article. Click here to access the article.

Spot Hidden Health Problems Early with Clues from Your Standard Blood Test Results

An enormous opportunity to spot and potentially prevent health problems early is lying right under our noses ... hidden clues in the results of standard blood tests like the Complete Blood Count (CBC) and Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP).
I wrote about this in some emails in August of this year, and now I have put all of that information into a new article called, "Spot Hidden Health Problems Early with Clues from Your Standard Blood Test Results"
Looking for these hidden clues in standard blood test results is one of the most cost-effective ways to keep an eye on your health.
Check it out.

Is vagus nerve and polyvagal system dysfunction the most significant dysregulator of sleep?

As I added a new section called "Dysfunction of the Vagus Nerve and Polyvagal System" to the "47+ Potential Causes of Poor Sleep Most People Have Never Considered" (was 46+ causes), I started to think that this contributor to sleep challenges might be the most significant overall because it is probably involved as a mediator of many other causes or contributors to sleep challenges.
If this topic interests you, I recommend checking out the new section called "Dysfunction of the Vagus Nerve and Polyvagal System". You can use the Table of Contents at the top of the article to jump to that section near the end of the article. Click here to access the article.

When you conjure up a mental image of Santa Claus, what do you see? I’d imagine yours resembles mine: a long-bearded, red-robed man flying through the night sky, on a sled towed by a team of magical reindeer. With plenty of devoted elven helpers running about, busily preparing for the annual Christmas Eve deliveries.

This cultural tradition is so embedded in us that the winter and Saint Nick are almost inseparable. The North Pole legend and all the symbolism surrounding it has become such a foundational principle of our seasonal reality that we’ve almost ceased questioning its origins.

Well, in the spirit of sacred curiosity we did a little digging through the archaeological record to find out exactly where and when the “Red One” stepped into our collective reality. This seemingly innocent exercise quickly blew up into a journey across cultures, continents, and millennia. I hope you enjoy the ride!

A quick disclaimer that the findings below are just a theory derived from an abundance of historical documentation we collected. If you believe Santa came from somewhere else, that is your God-given right and we respect that.

Ok, there are so many places to begin. A thousand doorways, you could say… wink, wink. (It’ll make sense later.) I guess the most obvious starting point is an exploration of Santa’s outfit.

The Hat

We’ve all worn the fluffy, floppy conical Christmas cap. Santa’s hat is an icon all by itself, bringing back images of childhood hopes and dreams, holiday parties of yesteryear, maybe even painful ghosts of Christmas past. The look and feel of this thing is so etched into our brain that it feels preordained, like it’s always been here waiting for us. But where does it come from?

The ancient Persian religion of Mithraism. More specifically, the sun god Mithra himself.

(I know - weird, right? Did I just ruin Christmas? I hope not, because we’re just getting warmed up.)

Ok, who is Mithra and how did his fashionable headgear end up on Santa’s head…

Click here to continue reading this on our blog

Stay curious,

The Santa theories that fly at this time of year get on my nerves.

I really don't think either Santa or the Phrygians were the first to use stocking caps. Nor is there probably any single origin for the Santa Claus features and traditions.

In the article linked here is the second time I've seen this error:

Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (Latin for “Birth Of The Invincible Son”)

WRONG! It means "birth of the invincible sun".

Yes, Santa Claus undoubtedly represents a merger of cherished pagan traditions with new Christian ones.

...the Norse god Odin (Zeus-type figure), who is often depicted riding through the sky on his 8-legged horse, delivering presents to children during the pagan midwinter festival of Yule.

Yes, probably correct, but:

When you imagine that paganism – which simply means “non-christian” – existed across Europe and the rest of the world well before the Roman Catholic Church got there...

WRONG! The term "pagan" originally had the meaning of country folk, though when used by churches it did refer to people who were not yet reached or converted to the Christian message, but when you consider that often those country folk were so attached to their traditions that it required centuries of vicious torture, robbing, burning, hanging, drowning, to bring those communities to heel, is it any wonder the word "pagan" became something of an epithet?

Finally, I didn't know the original St. Nicholas of Myra, patron saint of girls from poor families who couldn't provide dowries so their daughters could marry, was actually depicted in his iconography wearing red and white garments.

I'm glad Santa Claus survived the onslaught. He probably also goes back to nomadic herders' traditions and other ancient faiths as well as Odin and other pre-Christian gods.

Alcohol’s Impact On The Liver

The liver, one of the most vital organs in the human body, performs numerous essential functions, including detoxification, protein synthesis, and the production of biochemicals necessary for digestion.
It serves as the body’s primary defense system against toxins, acting as a gatekeeper that processes everything we ingest, breathe, and absorb through the skin.

Sleep Apnea Tops List of Sleep Disorders

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

According to the CDC, the most common sleep disorder in the United States is sleep apnea, which affects 10-20 million people. It’s a condition in which a person repeatedly stops and restarts breathing during the night, without ever really waking up.

Special: Unlock the Secrets to Perfect Sleep...

Symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Abrupt awakening accompanied by shortness of breath
  • Awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat
  • Awakening coughing or gagging
  • Morning headache
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Problems paying attention or focusing
While it’s bad enough that sleep apnea disrupts a person’s rest and circadian rhythm, research is increasingly linking the condition to a number of serious ailments, including high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and diabetes — all which contribute to heart disease and stroke.

In addition, sleep apnea also contributes to liver disease, and recently has been found to increase the risk of osteoporosis, particularly in women.

Hi Jimi,
While the holidays can be a wonderful time to reconnect with friends and loved ones, it can also be a time that serves as a painful reminder that anyone can be affected by cognitive decline.

Seeing parents or siblings acting differently than they once did can dim the holiday season. Thankfully, there are protocols that can be used to help prevent, and even reverse cognitive decline.

The first webinar of my 2-part series takes place on Monday, December 30th and focuses on implementing a keto diet for cognitive improvement — a key piece of the Bredesen Protocol.

We'll cover the benefits of the ketogenic diet for brain health, share inspiring recovery stories, and provide essential tools for getting started. Plus, you'll have the chance to ask your burning questions in a live Q&A session.

Navigating a keto diet doesn’t have to be hard, and you don’t have to do it alone.

I hope to see you there.

Warmly,
Dr. Heather Sandison

10 Minutes A Day of This Little-Known Therapy May Boost Bone Density

Vibration therapy is a promising method for supporting bone health and preventing age-related bone density loss. Research indicates that low-frequency vibrations can stimulate bone formation and improve mineral density, making it an especially valuable tool for women (who are more at risk of bone density loss). In a study published in Menopause Review, women who used a vibration plate for just 10 minutes a day, 5 times a week, had an increase in lumbar bone density of 4.3% after six months—a significant outcome for those at risk of osteoporosis. This gentle, low-impact approach may also enhance balance and mobility, supporting overall well-being. (More)

Does More Time in Nature = Less Cognitive Decline?

Spending just 20 minutes in nature daily has been shown to significantly improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults. One study published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that participants who spent time in green spaces experienced up to a 4% slower rate of cognitive decline over four years. Nature exposure promotes mental clarity by reducing stress hormones and increasing blood flow to the brain. Simple activities like walking in a park, sitting in a garden, or even just viewing natural scenery can provide long-term benefits for brain health. (More)

Diet Rich in Polyphenols May Lower Your Risk of Dementia

Polyphenols, found in foods like berries, dark chocolate, and green tea, have been shown to protect the brain from age-related decline. A recent meta-analysis published in Brain Plasticity revealed that individuals with higher polyphenol intake had a 30% reduced risk of developing cognitive impairment compared to those with lower consumption. Polyphenols combat oxidative stress and inflammation, which are key contributors to neurodegeneration. Adding foods like blueberries, walnuts, and a daily cup of green tea to your diet can be a simple and delicious way to support brain health as you age. (More)

Hormone imbalances can stem from a lot of root causes...
But can you guess what the #1 root cause of hormone imbalance I see in women in their late thirties and beyond is?
A sluggish liver.
That's because your liver plays a crucial role in:
  • Creating several key hormones, like estrogen, GLP-1, and others.
  • Converting them into a form your cells can use.
  • Detoxifying excess estrogen (and other hormones and toxins).
  • And preparing them to be removed from your body.
Which is why, for many of us, other livers end up being completely overwhelmed after the holidays—leading to digestive issues, extra belly fat and bloating, increased brain fog, and feeling hungover after just 1-2 glasses of wine.
I KNOW how frustrating that might feel.
So to help you get back on track before the New Year even begins...
I want to share a few of my go-to food swaps, self-care practices, and supplements you can start using immediately to boost your liver function.
And who's to say you can’t go ahead and jump into it today?!

Forgotten Wonders of Pycnogenol

Dr. Russell Blaylock, M.D., writes:

When pycnogenol (French maritime pine bark extract) first appeared on the natural health market, it caused a lot of excitement. But it has been mostly forgotten.

That’s unfortunate, because it has a number of incredible health benefits. For example, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 101 patients ages 60-85 were given either a placebo or 150 mg of pycnogenol for three months as a possible way to prevent and treat a decline in cognitive function. Researchers tested attention, working memory, episodic memory, and psychomotor performance. They found a significant improvement in working memory (which we use every day) and a dramatic decrease in lipid peroxidation products in those taking pycnogenol supplements.

Special: Doctor Finally Discovers Natural Secret Weapon Against Aging

Vascular diseases affecting the retina are quite common and can lead to blindness. In another study, researchers tested 40 patients with diabetes, atherosclerosis, or other vascular diseases and found that the 30 they treated with 50 mg of pycnogenol three times a day for two months not only demonstrated no deterioration, but also showed significant improvement in visual acuity. The patients who got a placebo continued to deteriorate.

The researchers also conducted special testing (fluorangiography and electroretinogram) that demonstrated objective improvement in retinal vascularization and function within the treatment group.

Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness in the United States. The primary damage occurs in microscopic blood vessels in the retina (called diabetic microangiopathy). Another study used older patients with advanced diabetic complications. The subjects were given 50 mg of pycnogenol three times a day for four weeks. After a month, they saw a significant improvement of microangiopathy, with a significant decrease in leakage of the vessels — a major cause of retinal damage and blindness.

In another study, researchers found that pycnogenol supplementation could significantly improve healing of diabetic ulcers, which can be very difficult to mend. The ulcers healed completely in 89% of the patients within six weeks. One use of pycnogenol is for treatment of vein problems of the legs that can cause swelling and eventual development of leg ulcers, which are difficult to heal. Patients taking pycnogenol saw reduced swelling of their legs and a significant reduction in venous leakage, which also prevented ulcerations.

Pycnogenol has also been very effective for preventing venous thrombosis in people who fly long distances. Pycnogenol increases nitric oxide production, but only in blood vessels, thereby improving blood flow. (Hesperidin also selectively increases blood vessel nitric oxide.) In addition, pycnogenol lowers elevated blood pressure when taken for 12 weeks.

Another beneficial effect is its ability to lower histamine levels, which reduces allergy symptoms.

Based on its ability to improve blood flow and stimulate blood vessel nitric oxide levels, pycnogenol should also significantly improve I am a spammer ban me dysfunction, even to normal levels, when combined with L-arginine.

In another study, researchers observed a significant improvement in vascular insufficiency-induced leg cramps and pain. The usual dose is 50 mg to 100 mg three times a day.
