Dr. Crandall: Spices Prevent Heart Disease Progression

If you are looking to boost your heart health, adding spices to your diet is an easy and scientifically proven way to do it.

Spices and heart health came up in the context of pro wrestling icon Hulk Hogan’s death at age 71, reportedly attributed to cardiac arrest. Dr. Chauncey Crandall, world-renowned cardiologist and director of preventive medicine at the Palm Beach Cardiovascular Clinic in Florida, tied Hogan’s death to his widely known abuse of anabolic steroids.

“We know that steroids, and in unnatural doses, can give you progression of heart disease, stroke, myocardial infarction, elevated cholesterol. So, I think all of these things led to his death,” Crandall tells Newsmax’s “Newsline.” “It's very sad that we've lost him because he was a wonderful character. I really enjoyed watching him.”

Spices, on the other hand, have been found to prevent the progression of heart disease, according to Crandall. The Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes plant-based foods and healthy oils, has been shown to be heart healthy, and it includes many beneficial spices.

In particular, garlic, which has a Mediterranean background, prevents stroke, lowers cholesterol, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, says Crandall, editor of the popular newsletter Dr. Crandall's Heart Health Report.

In addition, cinnamon has been shown in studies to lower blood sugar by reducing insulin resistance. It also has heart benefits. “Cinnamon is powerful. We know you can take this to lower your blood sugar, but it also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties,” says Crandall.

One study found that people at risk for heart disease who supplemented with about three-quarters of a teaspoon of cinnamon a day experienced reductions in levels of total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Crandall also recommends adding ginger, cumin, and paprika to your diet regularly to gain heart health benefits.

If there’s one thing you need to know about your food, it’s this:

There's a world of difference between “processed” food and “ultraprocessed” food.

You can make something like almond butter (for example) with just almonds, and while it’s technically a “processed food”, it contains no man-made ingredients and is healthy for you.

On the other hand, you can take a page out of Big Food’s playbook, and sell almond butter filled with sugar and hydrogenated seed oils made in a laboratory - which transforms that once healthy almond butter into an ultraprocessed junk food product.

I want everyone to spot the difference, which is why I regularly post graphics like this on my Instagram.







It’s not always easy to spot which products are ultraprocessed because we’re being bamboozled with marketing labels on packaging like “All Natural” and “Sugar Free”...which make ultraprocessed products full of junky additives appear healthy.

New Ways to Ease Alzheimer's

As we wait for a breakthrough that can block or reverse Alzheimer's disease, there is some consolation that we finally have three kinds of medications that can tamp down or slow the progression of symptoms: cholinesterase inhibitors, memantine, and a monoclonal antibody called lecanemab.

Cholinesterase inhibitors increase levels of a chemical messenger called acetylcholine, which promotes alertness, memory, and thought processing. According to experts, these medications can roll back memory loss by six to 12 months (as long as you stay on them), but they don't ultimately keep the disease from progressing.

Memantine impacts the effects of glutamate and dopamine — chemicals that help send messages involved in memory between nerve cells. It takes up to three months to see even minor benefits, but can let some people continue to manage daily tasks such as dressing themselves for a longer time.

And for those in the early stages of Alzheimer's, lecanemab slows the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brain. While the medication doesn't stop new plaques from forming, it does slow down their accumulation.

A different approach is therapeutic plasma exchange. In a large, randomized study called AMBAR (initially published in 2020 in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia), researchers found that the procedure reversed cognitive decline in the near term, and that the effects persisted long after treatment was stopped. Reminiscent of cranberry but softer, smoother, and more complex, hibiscus offers more than just flavor. One of my favorite summer recipes is a hibiscus and summer fruit cooler. Here's how to make it:

Hibiscus & Summer Fruit Cooler

Ingredients:


  • 5 cups water
  • ¼ cup dried hibiscus flowers
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • ¼ cup local honey
  • 8–10 fresh basil leaves
  • 1–2 nectarines, pitted and diced
  • 6–7 strawberries, sliced thin
Instructions:

Bring the water to a boil, then turn off the heat. Add the hibiscus, cover, and steep for 15–20 minutes. Strain and discard the flowers. Stir in honey, lime juice, and basil. Add the fruit and refrigerate for at least 45 minutes—or ideally overnight. Serve over ice and enjoy under the sun.
