ADHD Meds Linked to Heart Damage

Research shows that ADHD stimulant medications such as Ritalin and Adderall appear linked to a heightened risk for cardiomyopathy (weakening of the heart muscle) — and the risk grows with time.

Overall, people ages 20 to 40 who were on a medication for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were 17 percent more likely to have cardiomyopathy at one year and 57 percent more likely to have cardiomyopathy at eight years compared to peers who weren’t taking the drugs.

“The longer you leave patients on these medications, the more likely they are to develop cardiomyopathy, but the risk is still very low,” said study lead author Pauline Gerard.

The study was based on data from 80 hospitals across the United States, looking at people ages 20 to 40. Gerard’s team compared rates of cardiomyopathy among patients with ADHD who took stimulant meds and people who were matched by age, sex, and health conditions but did not take the drugs.

The study showed that over a period of 10 years, the relative risk for cardiomyopathy rose among people taking stimulant meds for about eight years, then tapered off during the last two years.

However, in absolute numbers, the incidence of cardiomyopathy was still quite low. At the 10-year mark, just under 1 percent of patients taking ADHD medications was found to have a weakened heart.

There’s new, exciting research on sleep apnea, the silent but critical sleep-disrupting disease that impacts one billion people worldwide.

A Michigan hospital refused to perform a critical ear surgery for a deaf infant unless his parents agreed to a pneumococcal vaccine. ICAN asked its attorneys to step in, and they successfully secured a religious exemption for this surgery, protecting the parents’ religious beliefs.

After an infant boy failed all his newborn hearing screenings and at 5 weeks old was diagnosed with profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears, his parents decided to move forward with cochlear implant surgery. Fortunately, specialists said that as long as the child received the surgery before his first birthday, he was likely to catch up in his speech and language development.

After meeting with countless specialists, the boy’s parents chose Children’s Hospital of Michigan to perform the surgery. They were initially told that, while the pneumococcal vaccine was recommended prior to the surgery, the parents could decline it. However, just months before the surgery, the hospital changed course and refused to proceed with the surgery until the child was vaccinated, unless they had a sufficient medical reason to decline.

Because of supporters like you, ICAN’s attorneys were able to step in and send a letter demanding that the hospital offer a religious exemption. They also explained that, by not accommodating the parents, the hospital was violating not only the law but also its own accreditation and non-discrimination standards. The letter also provided necessary context, pointing out that the boy’s risk of contracting bacterial meningitis, even with cochlear implants, was extremely rare (0.07%).

ICAN is thrilled to announce that the hospital has approved the parents’ request and agreed to perform the surgery without vaccination. We wish the best of luck to this child and his parents for a successful surgery, and we thank them for helping us set precedent for others at this hospital!

U.S. Commercial Development of Transgenic HB4 GMO Wheat is Now Underway​

Capital Press:

“Argentina-based Bioceres Crop Solutions Corps and the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation will jointly develop and commercialize HB4 wheat in the United States. HB4 is a transgenic wheat trait that incorporates drought tolerance transferred through a sunflower gene. According to Bioceres, HB4 wheat demonstrated up to a 43% yield improvement in targeted environments.

The USDA in August 2024 approved HB4, the first GMO trait ever deregulated in the U.S. for wheat. As part of the collaboration, Bioceres will grant the research foundation ‘exclusive, sublicensable rights’ to the HB4 trait in the U.S. territory. The foundation will serve as ‘trait manager,’ facilitating broad access to HB4 wheat for third-party breeding programs and commercial channels, and leading engagement with U.S. stakeholders, according to a joint announcement from Bioceres and the foundation.

The parties will work together with industry participants to develop, register and commercialize new ‘broad-spectrum’ herbicide formulations tailored for HB4 wheat.”

Morning Maca Elixir

Ingredients

1 to 2 cups unsweetened almond milk (enough to cover the other ingredients)
¼ cup raw hemp protein powder
2 tablespoons chia seeds or flaxseeds
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 banana, or diced apple, pear, or mango
1½ tablespoons maca powder*
1 tablespoon wild honey (optional)
4 or 5 ice cubes

*You can find maca powder at health food stores or online.

Preparation

Place all the ingredients in a blender. Blend until the elixir reaches the desired consistency.

NOTE: If you want to add a little extra oomph to your smoothie, try adding a pinch of cayenne pepper. This bold spice is extremely good for blood circulation.

When it comes to impurities, the “smoother” the alcohol tastes, the better it is made. Remember the tequila shots we used to do in college? We had to get it down quickly to get over the awful taste. That was the “college” tequila – cheap and poorly made (but affordable).
You can enjoy and sip a top-shelf tequila, as it contains fewer impurities and is gentler on your liver. For this reason, I consider it a “healthier” choice with a lower likelihood of causing a hangover.
Histamine release will also contribute to how you feel. Headaches, itching, rashes, ringing in the ears, and flushing are signs of histamine release, which would also make you feel sick.
