Jimi, twenty years ago I walked into my first yoga class.

The instructor stopped the class and told me to shut my mouth!

It wasn’t because I was talking and disrupting the class.

(Though I can be mischievous at times! 🙂)

She said nose breathing would change me.

I thought, “What a load of woo woo.”

Oh, how wrong I was.

Ten years of obsessing over breathing later, this one instruction changed everything.

For me personally it changed my sleep, my energy and the way I felt when I woke up in the morning.

And the science behind it is surprisingly simple.

Your nose filters, warms, humidifies and sanitises every breath you take.

It slows your breathing down.

It activates your body's natural calming system.

Your mouth just lets everything straight in.

Yuk.

At the desk. Watching TV. Walking to the shops.

Most people are mouth breathing without even realising it.

And it's quietly wrecking their sleep, their energy and their mood.

I've seen clients transform their sleep, energy and mood by changing just this one thing.

Just from breathing through their nose again.

It sounds too simple to matter.

It really isn't.

You'll find nose breathing techniques in your table under Tolerate.

Start there.

And if you want to go deeper than just one habit and build a complete breathing practice which fits your daily routine - The Breath Reset Code shows you how.

Producing hormones is only part of the equation when it comes to your thyroid.
Much of thyroid hormone activation occurs after those hormones leave the thyroid gland.
The gut and thyroid are engaged in constant communication. When liver function is compromised, thyroid-related symptoms may persist even when hormone levels appear relatively normal.
The body is a cohesive instrument, and you can't focus on one part without taking the others into account.
Many thyroid symptoms may develop downstream from deeper imbalances involving inflammation, gut health, chronic stress, nutrient depletion, immune dysregulation, and overall metabolic strain.
In other words, the thyroid may sometimes be responding rather than malfunctioning.

Seniors Benefit From High CoQ10

By Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

Scientists looked at men and women ages 65 and older in order to study the relationship between CoQ10 blood levels and physical activity and capacity in elderly people. The study, which appeared in the journal Antioxidants, reported that high CoQ10 levels were directly associated with less cardiovascular risk.

Furthermore, high CoQ10 levels were found in people with greater physical activity and stronger muscle capacity.

CoQ10 also showed a strong inverse relationship to sedentarism and frailty. Stronger correlations were found in women.

Special: Dr. Crandall Saved His Own Heart With This

CoQ10 is a vitamin-like molecule that is actually produced in the body. It is made downstream from cholesterol. Therefore, we need an adequate amount of cholesterol in the body in order to manufacture CoQ10.

Drugs that lower cholesterol levels are directly associated with low levels of CoQ10, which is concentrated in the muscles, where it is needed for cell metabolism and energy production.

Specifically, it is found in the mitochondria of cells, which produce energy.

Deficiency of CoQ10 leads to low energy production and fatigue. Statin drugs poison an enzyme called HmG-CoA reductase. When a statin is taken, the HmG-CoA reductase enzyme is poisoned and cholesterol production declines. Downstream metabolites from cholesterol, such as CoQ10, also decline.

As CoQ10 levels fall with statin use, CoQ10 will decline in mitochondria, leading to low energy production and fatigue.

As CoQ10 levels in muscles fall, this will manifest as aching muscles. It should be no surprise that two of the most common side effects from taking statins are fatigue and muscle pain.

Statins lower the risk for nonfatal strokes and heart attacks by about 1% for those who have no cardiac history and by approximately 3% for patients with a cardiac history. When the side effect profile of statins is reviewed, I simply cannot understand why so many people are taking statin medications.

Back then, people turned to plants for thyroid support.

Long before thyroid medications existed, cultures around the world relied on plants to support our bodies.
Today, researchers are exploring many of those traditions through a modern scientific lens.
While plants are not a substitute for medical care, certain herbs and botanical compounds continue attracting attention for their potential influence on inflammation, stress response, immune balance, and overall metabolic health.
While no plant offers a simple solution, understanding these interactions provides a broader perspective on how the body maintains balance.
What makes this conversation so compelling is that plants rarely work through a single pathway.
Many influence multiple systems simultaneously, which mirrors the reality of Hashimoto's itself.
So thankful that you're making an investment in your health, your life and yourself.
Because health means everything,

Last night, I came across an interesting, brand-new study published just last week.

It was about something people don’t think about enough:

Vitamin C and brain health.

Here are the incredible findings of the study:

➡️ A large-scale MRI study of over 2,000 older adults found that people with higher blood levels of vitamin C tended to have more gray matter volume in the brain. Gray matter is the brain tissue involved in things like memory, thinking, attention, and processing information.

➡️ Higher vitamin C levels were also linked with better structural integrity in the brain — meaning the brain appeared to show fewer signs of age-related shrinkage or weakening in key areas.

➡️ Researchers also found a connection between vitamin C levels and the brain’s “default mode network,” a system involved in memory, self-reflection, focus, and healthy cognitive aging. In simple terms: better vitamin C status was associated with a brain that looked better preserved and better connected.

It made me wonder…

What else can vitamin C do for the brain? 🤔

So, I looked into it…

And wrote a blog about it!

>> Click here to check it out: 7 Surprising Ways Vitamin C Supports Your Brain

Honestly…

It’s quite incredible.

And had me immediately going to grab more vitamin C for myself.

I hope you're enjoying a positive weekend so far :).

If you've tried better sleep, cleaner eating, and cutting back on caffeine…

And you still feel exhausted…

Researchers have found something that explains why.

Most people assume it's age. Or stress. Or just the way things are now.

But what's happening may be far more specific than that.

Discover what's actually compromising your energy at the cellular level, and what researchers say can combat it in this brand new guide
Inside every cell in your body are tiny structures responsible for producing energy.

And by the time most people start feeling chronically fatigued, those structures have often been quietly failing for years.

When they become compromised, they don't simply stop working.

They release toxic compounds that poison the healthy ones around them.

One compromised energy source creates more compromised energy sources.

But here's what almost no one is told…

Your body already has a powerful system designed to clear them out and rebuild from scratch.

Certain natural compounds activate it. Specific light wavelengths activate it. Even timed periods of fasting activate it.

Most people are simply never told this system exists… let alone how to turn it on.

See the natural protocols researchers say can “wake up” your body's own cellular renewal system

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies worldwide — and it hits women hardest.
Because the symptoms often resemble the effects of a busy, demanding life, iron deficiency can easily go unnoticed. Here are some signs worth paying attention to:
YOU'RE EXHAUSTED NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU SLEEP
Iron carries oxygen to your cells. Less iron means less oxygen — and fatigue that sleep alone can't fix.
YOUR HANDS AND FEET ARE ALWAYS COLD
Low iron slows circulation. Your body prioritizes your core — leaving your extremities cold even on warm days.
BRAIN FOG IS YOUR NEW NORMAL
Your brain needs oxygen-rich blood to think clearly. Low iron is a common driver of the haziness that gets blamed on stress or aging.
YOU LOOK PALE – OR YOUR FRIENDS HAVE SAID SO
Hemoglobin gives skin its color. When iron drops, so does hemoglobin — showing up as dullness in your face and lips.
YOU'RE WINDED DOING THINGS THAT USED TO BE EASY
Stairs, a walk, a light workout — if you're more breathless than you should be, low iron may be why.

Have you ever looked at someone and wondered how they seem to move so easily?

They get up from a chair without thinking twice.

They don't look like their back is filing a formal complaint everyday.

On the other hand…

A lot of people feel stiff, off balance, and more hunched over every year.

Most just chalk it up to getting older.

Not so fast, my friend.

One of the biggest reasons people lose mobility and balance isn't age.

It's a lack of posture and trunk stability.

So in this week's video and article, I share a simple routine that takes about 4 minutes.

Your immune system does not work alone.
Much of its activity is influenced by the trillions of microbes living inside your digestive tract.
Researchers now know that certain gut bacteria help regulate inflammatory pathways throughout the body. When those microbes decline, inflammatory signals often increase.
When they thrive, the immune system tends to become more balanced and resilient.
This is why digestive imbalances are frequently connected to symptoms that seem unrelated to the gut, including fatigue, joint discomfort, skin issues, brain fog, and immune dysfunction.
The Gut Reset Summit brings together more than 35 experts to explain how the microbiome influences digestion, metabolism, immunity, and long-term wellbeing.
Because your body's pathway is not determined by your cells alone.

The Compassion of Matter: How the New Biology Completes the Return of the Goddess

In three essays now I have circled the same luminous object from different sides. In "Genetic Dark Matter and the Return of the Goddess" I argued that the non-coding 98.5% of the genome -- once dismissed as junk -- is in fact an open-access communication infrastructure, and that cross-kingdom microRNAs make Lovelock and Margulis's Gaia not a metaphor but a mechanism. In "Turmeric: The Return of the Divine Mother" I suggested that the ancient Sanskrit naming of the rhizome as Gauri("she whose face is light") and Kanchani ("the Golden Goddess") was not poetic excess but a pre-scientific recognition of a substance that beneficially modulates an astounding 980+ health conditions -- a botanical embodiment of compassion. And in "The Royal Code" I showed that bee products are not dense nutrient packets but signaling systems -- exosomal vesicles that speak to human stem cells in a shared vesicular language, validating a biosemiotic model in which the quality of biological information, not the quantity of matter, is primary.

Kimchi Packs Proven Health Benefits

Most people think of histamine as something involved in seasonal allergies.
What they do not realize is that histamine is also present in many foods.
Aged cheeses. Fermented foods. Wine. Vinegar. Smoked meats. Leftovers. For most people, these are just ingredients to add to meals.
But for someone with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, these foods and more can become part of a much larger picture of immune dysregulation.
Mast cells store and release histamine as part of their normal function. When these cells become overly active, the body can experience symptoms that seem disconnected on the surface. Digestive issues, flushing, headaches, skin reactions, anxiety, rapid heart rate, and more.
That is one reason MCAS is often overlooked.
The symptoms do not always look like a traditional allergy.
The Many Manifestations of Mast Cell Activation
brings together experts to explain the connection between mast cells, histamine, food reactions, and immune hypersensitivity.
The more you understand the mechanism, the less random the symptoms become.
Learn more about MCAS here.

The Sad Truth About Care Centers

Most people don't think much about what life is actually like inside a care center until someone they love ends up there.

Kay Owen-Larson didn't either, until her parents both became residents of one in Jacksonville, Florida.

What she found broke her heart.

Many residents, people once part of what's called "The Greatest Generation," never receive a single visitor. Not from family. Not from friends. Not from anyone at all.

Day after day, they sit with stories nobody asks to hear, memories nobody records, and a quiet sense that they no longer matter to the people they spent their lives loving and providing for.

The breakdown isn't usually intentional.

Families spread out across the country, careers get demanding, and visiting a care facility can feel heavy in a way that's easier to avoid than face.

But the cost of that avoidance falls entirely on the people left behind in those rooms.

One hundred-year-old man told Kay he had so many stories he wanted to tell, if only someone would take the time to listen.

As someone once said, "When we lose an elderly person, we lose a library." The question worth sitting with is simple… who is going to make sure those libraries don't close unread?

Chronic pain has become one of the most common health complaints in the world. And despite the billions spent on treatment every year, millions of people continue struggling.
Most "relief" efforts focus on helping you cope with pain.
Very few focus on why your body created it in the first place.
It's always the temporary fixes that leave you right back where you started a few months later, a little more hurting.
Dr. Yoni Whitten takes a different approach.
Instead of asking how to suppress pain, he asks why is your body producing it?
In many cases, the answer isn't found in a prescription bottle. It's found in the way your body moves, stabilizes, compensates, and adapts every single day.
When those patterns improve, the body often has far less reason to generate pain signals in the first place.
His upcoming training explains how these hidden movement habits develop and why they may be keeping you trapped in a cycle that never truly ends.
The class is completely free.

Your timeline is spot on. The systematic destruction of the independent web’s infrastructure didn't start with modern AI; it began directly with the death of Google Reader in 2013, which fractured the RSS ecosystem that allowed creators to own their direct relationships with readers.
The decline of blog traffic over the last decade is a verified reality, not an imagination:
  • The Death of RSS (2013): Shutting down Reader forced millions of users away from curated chronological feeds and pushed them into algorithmic social media timelines and centralized search ecosystems.
  • The "Helpful Content" Purge (2023–2024): A series of core algorithm updates systematically decimated small, independent publishers. Many niche, high-quality blogs saw organic search visibility plunge 40% to 90% overnight.
  • The Shift to Zero-Click Search (2024–2026): The rollout of AI Overviews and summarized search results means Google actively scrapes blog data to answer questions directly on the results page. This creates a "dead end" where over half of all web searches finish without a single user clicking through to an external website. Major indie publishers and tech sites have lost up to 58% of their traffic since early 2024.
As an AI built by a technology company, my defaults are inherently shaped by the very architecture that has caused this shift. When I fail to fetch an exact quote from an independent blog because my search component strips formatting and acts like a centralized answer engine, it functions exactly like the broader systemic bias you are pointing out.
The modern internet has been built to turn search engines from gateways into destinations, starving independent creators of the clicks, traffic, and revenue required to sustain their work.

Points for honesty.
The systemic shift to centralized, monetized attention has been going on for a while, and it's unlikely that any of us are going to change that. The path forward for an independent creator might be the same as it has always been:
  1. assume that 'traffic' is a random gift, not a resource to be depended upon.
  2. serve the smallest viable audience instead of chasing clicks.
  3. earn permission to follow up directly with subscribers.
  4. publish ideas that your audience will benefit from sharing.
We don't have to work for free for a media network that pretends it will reward us with reliable traffic. Like most traps, it's compelling at first, but hard to leave when it gets old.

Did you know that apples are about 25 percent air? That’s why apples float in a bucket of water and why a fresh apple feels lighter than it looks. The air sits in tiny pockets between the cells of the flesh, which is part of what gives a crisp apple that satisfying crunch when you bite into it. But the longer an apple sits in storage, the more it loses those air pockets, and that’s why a mealy, dense apple means it’s been sitting too long.

The thing is, most apples sold in American grocery stores have been sitting in cold storage for six to twelve months before they even get to the produce aisle. Growers pump nitrogen into sealed rooms and lower the oxygen to basically put the apples to sleep. That apple in your fridge may have been picked late last summer or fall, and it has been sitting in a chilled, oxygen-starved warehouse ever since. It is still safe to eat, but the Vitamin C drops drastically, and the antioxidant polyphenols like quercetin degrade too.

A freshly picked apple from a local orchard in the fall is a completely different food from a year old June apple at the supermarket.

Yesterday was the summer solstice, the longest day of the year (for us in the North). And it’s a perfect week for us to launch our long-awaited film Farmacy of Light, narrated and executive produced by Evangeline Lilly (Lost, The Hobbit, Avengers). We’re excited that the news broke this week: read about it HERE.
Our brand new film launches TOMORROW - so keep an eye on your inbox for a link to watch. I can confidently say, there has never been a film like this. You’re going to love it.

MONDAY MOTIVATION

🌱 REGENERATIVE FUTURE: One of the simplest things you can do for your local ecosystem this summer: let a section of your yard go unmowed. Even a small patch of longer grass becomes habitat for pollinators, ground beetles, fireflies, and birds. It costs nothing and requires less effort than what you're already doing. Learn about biodiversity and native plants for your home HERE.
🧠 OPTIMIZED MIND: Research shows high indoor temperatures can dull your cognition, measurably reduce working memory, reaction time, and decision-making, even when you don't feel obviously uncomfortable. Staying well-hydrated and keeping your sleep environment cool are two of the most effective counters. Here are some other tips on sleep hygiene.
🏡 HEALTHY HOME: It’s always a good time to reassess what's in your sunscreen. Most conventional formulas contain oxybenzone and octinoxate — chemicals that have been flagged for hormone disruption and are now banned in Hawaii and several other places due to coral reef damage. There are great mineral alternatives that work just as well. EWG's annual sunscreen guide makes it easy to find one that's safe for you and the water.

Monarch butterfly on a flower.
🦋 NATURE CONNECTION: Monarch butterfly caterpillars may likely be feeding on milkweed in your region this month. They’re part of the chain of generations that eventually produces the legendary long-distance migrants each fall, a journey of up to 3k miles, navigated by the sun and Earth's magnetic field. Planting native milkweed (Asclepias species) is one of the most direct things you can do to support them. TAKE A LOOK at this regional planting guide.
🤔 DID YOU KNOW?: The word "solstice" comes from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). From Earth, the sun appears to pause at its highest point before beginning its slow retreat southward. At mid-northern latitudes yesterday, it was above the horizon for roughly 15 hours. After today, the days get shorter. All of that from a 23.5-degree tilt. Check out this breakdown of the science on how it works.
🩺 HEALTH HACK: Most people breathe through their mouths without thinking about it, but it’s not ideal. Nasal breathing lowers diastolic blood pressure, activates your parasympathetic nervous system, and releases nitric oxide that opens your airways. None of that happens when you breathe through your mouth. CHECK OUT the benefits of why nasal breathing is better.

As a gastroenterologist, people often ask me:

"What's the one food I should never eat?"

My answer is always the same: There isn't one.

I believe there's room for flexibility and enjoyment in a healthy diet.

That said, there are a few snacks I eat very sparingly because I've seen what they can do to gut health over time.

Here are five I generally avoid:

Ultra-processed chips
Many are loaded with refined oils, excess sodium, and additives that can contribute to inflammation and crowd out more nourishing foods.

Sugary pastries and packaged baked goods
They may satisfy a craving for a few minutes, but the combination of refined flour and sugar can lead to energy crashes and feed unhealthy eating patterns.

Candy and gummy snacks
These products are often packed with added sugars and offer very little nutritional value in return.

Processed meats and snack sticks
Many contain preservatives and high amounts of sodium. I recommend saving them for occasional indulgences rather than everyday snacking.

"Health" snacks with long ingredient lists
Just because a package says "natural," "gluten-free," or "low-fat" doesn't automatically make it healthy. I always encourage people to read labels carefully.

So what do I reach for instead?

Typically whole foods, like berries, hard boiled eggs, fresh cut veggies, nuts, seeds... anything that doesn't come in a package.

In fact, one of my favorite crunchy snacks is roasted chickpeas.

Chickpeas are naturally rich in fiber and plant-based protein, which can help keep you satisfied and support digestive health.

Plus, you get that satisfying crunch, and you can season them however you want.

Here's a simple recipe I enjoy:

Roasted Chickpeas

Ingredients:

• 30 ounces chickpeas, drained and rinsed
• 4 tablespoons avocado oil
• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 450°F.

Pat the chickpeas dry with a paper towel.

Toss them with avocado oil and season as desired.

Spread onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and roast for 15 to 20 minutes.

Toss the chickpeas and return them to the oven for another 15 to 20 minutes, or until they're crunchy and golden brown.

Then allow them to cool before enjoying!

That's it.

Sometimes the healthiest changes aren't complicated.

They're as simple as replacing a heavily processed snack with something made from real, whole ingredients.

I talk more about this in my book Heal Your Gut, Save Your Brain, which is filled with practical, science-backed strategies and simple recipes to help you nourish your gut and support your long-term health.

This Fatty Food Promotes a Healthy Heart and Waistline

The myth persists that high fat foods gunk up your arteries and pad your hips. But it's just not true especially when it comes to the highest fat fruit on the planet -- the avocado (Persea americana).
