HEALTH & NUTRITION

We Are What We Eat

Growing evidence links diet to more than physical health. It shapes mood and overall well being too. Cutting back on ultra-processed foods, eating more fruits and vegetables, and certain supplements have been tied to improvements in depression and other mental health conditions in adults, plus a healthier start in life for children. Researchers are increasingly connecting these effects to the brain regions involved in eating behavior and to the gut microbiome’s influence on immune, metabolic, and neural pathways.

Research increasingly links gut health to reduced inflammation and improved functioning across many body systems, including the nervous system. Eating a variety of plants supports a healthy gut microbiome because each plant contains different polyphenols, chemicals that nourish beneficial gut bacteria. Gut health expert Tim Spector, PhD, of King’s College London, suggests eating a high-fiber diet with around 30 different plants per week, including fruits and vegetables as well as grains, nuts, and spices.

GOOD NEWS

French Polynesia Just Created One of the Largest Ocean Protections Ever

French Polynesia’s government just designated a new marine reserve roughly the size of France, protecting about 200,000 square miles of water around the Austral and Marquesas Islands. Mining, trawling, and industrial fishing are now banned across the entire area, while the traditional artisanal fishing that local communities have always depended on gets to continue.
These waters are home to species found nowhere else on Earth, and they shelter endangered sharks, whales, dolphins, and sea turtles who need every bit of safe habitat they can get. It’s one of the biggest ocean protection commitments any government has ever made, and it’s a genuinely hopeful reminder that at a moment when so much ocean news is about what’s being opened up to industry, some places are still choosing to protect what makes them special and supports their communities.

FOOD CHEMICALS

What’s Lurking in Your Frozen Pizza?

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) just added propyl gallate to its Dirty Dozen list of food chemicals, and we could all easily be eating it without knowing. It’s a preservative that is used to stop fats and oils from going rancid, so it turns up often in processed meats like deli meats and sausages, as well as candy and frozen foods like pizza.
Studies have linked propyl gallate to oxidative stress, which is when reactive molecules build up in the body and damage cells. Researchers have also connected it and its breakdown products to liver damage, kidney damage, and reproductive harm in animal studies, including effects on fertility and early embryonic development.
When you’re looking at labels, it’s not always easy to spot, since it’s usually listed below the Nutrition Facts panel and can even be added to food packaging without being disclosed on the label at all.
The good news is organic products aren’t allowed to use at all, so organic versions of these products are a safe bet.”
See the full report on EWG before your next shopping trip.

We Need Your Help To Advance Chiropractic Medicare Coverage

mail
Jimi,
Since 1972, Medicare has only covered spinal manual manipulation from chiropractors, excluding exams and other services their state licenses already permit. HR 539, the Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act, would update Medicare to cover the full scope of chiropractic care each state authorizes, without altering any state's scope-of-practice laws.
This bill embodies core MAHA priorities: patient choice, root-cause non-drug care, and removing an outdated federal restriction that pushes seniors toward more invasive options before conservative care. It also respects state autonomy, deferring entirely to each state's existing licensure decisions rather than imposing any new federal standard. As such, we strongly support this bill, but we need your help to get it passed—we strongly urge you to send an email to your representatives today expressing support for the bill.
The MAHA Action legislative tracker makes emailing your representatives simple. Just click on the button below, enter your information on the right side of the webpage, and click “Send Message”! It takes less than 1 minute to make a real impact and make your voice heard.

Bill Summary + Why This Matters:

US HR 539

Bill Summary

One in three American seniors lives with chronic pain, and Medicare, the program built to cover their care, still treats chiropractic care like it is 1972. That year, chiropractors were recognized as physicians under Medicare, but coverage was limited to exactly one service: manual manipulation of the spine, commonly known as an adjustment. More than fifty years later, that is still the only chiropractic service Medicare pays for. Not the exam. Not the evaluation. Not the things a chiropractor's licensing board requires before care ever begins. Seniors deserve the freedom to choose their doctor and to receive the full range of care their state already trusts chiropractors to deliver.
The Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act, HR 539, finally fixes that. When it passes, Medicare's chiropractic coverage will reflect what doctors of chiropractic are already licensed by their states to do, similar to the broader recognition already seen in the VA, Department of Defense, federal employee health plans, and private insurance. Nothing in the bill changes any state's scope of practice. Medicare is a payer, not a scope authority; it simply brings chiropractors into parity with other physician-level Medicare providers. The support is already there: 166 House cosponsors, nearly evenly split between the parties. What the bill needs now is a committee vote. That is exactly what constituent pressure produces.

How the Body Regulates Fluid Balance

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

Our bodies need adequate amounts of salt and water to maintain good health. And we don’t have any storage facilities for either.

The human body is made up primarily of water. About 60%-70% of the body is water. And 70%-80% of the brain is water. Therefore, small changes in hydration status can have drastic repercussions.

Special: Alleviate Your Joint Pain in as Few as 5 Days

In fact, the human body is constantly losing water. Breathing exhales water vapor, causing water levels to decline. Water is also lost through urination and defecation; it even evaporates off the skin.

More water is lost in warmer environments, at high altitudes, when the humidity of the environment is very low (such as in the desert), and during exercise. In addition, anything that increases the heart rate can cause water loss.

As noted, humans can’t store water. Therefore, we need to continually supply the body with more water to maintain proper hydration.

Because water is so important, the body has tight regulatory mechanisms to control fluid status. One of the primary methods is through hormonal production in the pituitary gland — specifically, the posterior pituitary — where the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) is secreted.

One job of ADH is to signal the kidneys to reabsorb water when the body is dehydrated. So, in a dehydrated state, the pituitary gland will increase the release of ADH to help the body minimize the consequences of dehydration.

Signs of dehydration include dry, flaky skin; sunken eye sockets; a dry tongue; and ridging in the nails. A thorough physical exam can identify many of the signs of dehydration.

Summer meals are one of my favorite ways to hydrate. When it's hot outside, the food on my plate does just as much for me as the water in my glass.

And cucumbers are one of the most hydrating foods you can put on your plate.

Here's why cucumbers are a beautiful choice this time of year:

💚 They're 96% water — one of the most hydrating foods in nature, which supports your energy, digestion, and helps calm cortisol on hot days.

💚 They're rich in antioxidants — flavonoids and tannins that help your body handle oxidative stress and support healthy aging.

💚 They're naturally alkalizing — which supports balanced pH and helps your body function at its best.

💚 They're a source of magnesium and vitamin K — both important for calm moods, restful sleep, and healthy metabolism.

Fresh Cucumber Salad with Lime & Cilantro
Fresh Cucumber Salad with Lime & Cilantro

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 2 large cucumbers, peeled if desired and cubed
  • ¼ red onion, thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Juice of 1 to 2 limes
  • 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • Sea salt, to taste
  • Pinch of red chili flakes (optional — for a little kick)

Directions:

  1. Add the cubed cucumbers, red onion, and cilantro to a large bowl.
  2. Drizzle with olive oil and fresh lime juice.
  3. Season with sea salt and a pinch of chili flakes if you like a little heat.
  4. Toss gently to combine.
  5. Serve right away, or chill in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes to let the flavors come together.
Make this a complete hormone-balancing meal by pairing it with your favorite protein, grilled chicken, shredded beef or wild-caught fish are all beautiful with this one.

Hit reply and let me know if you try this one, I'd love to hear how it turns out! 💛
