| Hi Jimi, |
| One study found that people who ate at least a golf ball's weight of allium vegetables per week had a 64% lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared with those who ate almost none. |
| That's onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, and chives, which are some of the most affordable and flavorful foods in any kitchen. |

| P.S. What makes alliums so powerful? Why do they make your eyes water? And did you know that letting garlic rest for 10 minutes after chopping dramatically increases its health benefits? Here’s what you need to know about allium vegetables. |

Organic Bytes Newsletter #949: Why We’re Watching Synthetic Biology Closely SUBSCRIBE | DONATE | VIEW ON WEB
TAKE ACTION Synthetic Biology Just Took a Big Step. We’re Watching Where It Goes Next.Synthetic biologists are one step closer to building life from scratch. They’ve just created a fully synthetic “SpudCell” that can feed, grow, and reproduce. Science like this rarely stays in the lab for long. It tends to end up in food, whether that was the intent at creation. And when it does, federal regulators aren’t doing anything to stop it. The only hope we have is for state lawmakers to draw the line.Several states have taken action to ban lab-grown (cell-cultured) meat, but most of the synbio industry’s Frankenfoods are slipping past them: molds marketed as imitation meat (Quorn, MyForest); fake egg whites, whey, and blood made from genetically modified microorganisms (The Every Company, Perfect Day, The Impossible Burger); and lab-grown chocolate (Mondelez, Celleste). These aren’t first-generation GMOs. Today, instead of modifying microorganisms with natural genes extracted from different organisms (like Monsanto’s rBGH), they use synthetic DNA. This technique was invented by Craig Venter in 2010 and appropriated by Monsanto in 2013 when it acquired an equity stake in Venter’s Synthetic Genomics. Food made with GMO microbes may be toxic or trigger allergies. Back in the 1980s when Showa Denko decided to produce its tryptophan supplement with genetically engineered bacteria, 37 people died and 1500 were permanently disabled. But they’re completely unregulated. Synbio GMOs enter our food through the FDA’s “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) loophole. There’s no safety review. Companies simply declare their own products GRAS, and even that is voluntary. Food-safety lawyers argue this violates the 1958 Food Additives Law, but they haven’t won that fight in court. Now the technology is leaping forward again. This summer, University of Minnesota researchers unveiled “SpudCell”, the first synthetic cell built entirely from non-living molecules that can feed, grow, and divide. It isn’t alive, and it isn’t anywhere near your grocery store. But it shows how fast this field is moving. ORGANIC & LOCAL AGRICULTURE Planting Seeds in Times of Darknessby Winona LaDuke, Minnesota Women’s Press:“Our prophecies as Anishinaabeg speak of this time as that of the Seventh and Eighth Fire. We are told that we will have a choice between a scorched path and a green path. We must take the green path if we are to survive and to light the Eighth Fire of peace. Those teachings have implications for all of us. Here are a few of those teachings. Seeds are our future, yet, in the world of globalized agriculture, things are not looking good. One out of four farmers this year will not be buying fertilizer, and more farms will go under. That’s a price of war. This will be a challenge for food that most of us will eat, and this is also a moment to grow, without the chemicals of war and conflict. This is the time to nourish and replenish soil, not scorch it with additives that end in -cide, the word of death: pesticide, fungicide, homicide, genocide. Believe in life. Our awareness of this crisis is opportunity. It enables us to reaffirm relationship with soils through organic and local agriculture and rethink how we treat ‘dirt.’” We can follow the instructions of our ancestors and guiding forces like Sitting Bull, who told us that if we put our minds together, we can make a good future for our children. |
BILLIONS AGAINST BAYER Glyphosate Is Making Wildfire Season Worseby Danielle Enblom, Organic Consumers Association:As wildfire smoke blankets North America, most of the conversation focuses on climate and drought. But there’s a factor nobody is talking about: glyphosate. Every year, thousands of hectares of public forest land are sprayed with glyphosate-based herbicides to clear the way for commercially valuable conifers, eliminating the aspen and birch groves that act as natural firebreaks and keep flames low to the ground. The result is a more uniform, more flammable forest. Read our new article to find out what’s happening in Canada and the United States, why the fight just got harder, and what you can do about it. |
The Best Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Arthritis Sufferers
Arthritis is a chronic condition that affects millions of people, causing joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. While there is no cure, managing arthritis symptoms effectively is key to maintaining a good quality of life.
| Hey Jimi, Childhood trauma is more common than most people realize. In fact, studies show that over two-thirds of children worldwide experience at least one traumatic event by the age of 16 or 18. And it doesn’t always have to be something extreme. It can be simple things like growing up in a stressful environment, feeling emotionally unsupported, or being exposed to ongoing conflict or pressure. On the surface, these experiences may not seem that serious. But when they build up and linger over time, they can begin to affect the body in ways most people don’t realize. Discover the overlooked link between childhood trauma and chronic disease You see, unmanaged stress and unresolved experiences don’t just stay in the past. They can continue to influence your body long after the moment has passed. In fact, research has shown that long-term stress and trauma are linked to a higher risk of conditions like cancer, heart disease, and autoimmune issues. What makes this even more challenging is that this internal stress can also affect how well your body responds to the very treatments you rely on. Which means you could be doing all the right things, and still not seeing the results you expected. Despite what many people believe, these deeper patterns can have a much greater impact on your health than you may think. The good news is, there are natural ways to gently start working with your body to address this. That is exactly why I held my live masterclass yesterday, The Missing Link to Healing. During the session, I broke down what this key factor is and how it influences whether your body can actually shift into a state where healing becomes possible. As you watch the replay, you’ll discover:

Brain Defenders: Reversing Alzheimer’s Risk with Dr. David Perlmutter |
Jim, For 30 years, the leading theory of Alzheimer's centered on a single villain, a sticky protein called beta amyloid. Every major drug built to fight the disease was designed to clear it out. Dr. David Perlmutter told me this week that 75 percent of elderly people who die with no signs of cognitive decline still have high levels of that same protein in their brains. That stopped me. If most healthy older brains carry the same protein everyone blames for Alzheimer's, it can't be the whole story. David has spent years building a case for a different explanation, the brain's own immune cells, which respond to how you eat, sleep, and move. That doesn't mean Alzheimer's is fully within your control. Genetics and age still carry real weight. But it means more of the story is written earlier than we thought, and some of it is written by us. My dad passed away two months ago, and hearing David frame it that way landed on me directly. He talked about protecting your metabolism in your 30s and 40s as an act of care for whoever ends up as your caregiver later. Here's some of what we got into:
If you have a parent, a partner, or a future version of yourself you're thinking about, this is worth your full attention. P.S. You can pre-order Dr. Perlmutter's new book "Brain Defenders" now. I hope you'll listen in, Jeff |
