ORCHID MODIFICATION THREAD

I'm going to try (when I get it in) is just add to the stock evaporation chamber of the KF4 so I can use a full sized tank. so I might try putting a glob of epoxy in and around the top of the chimney and add the extension on and after it cures, drill out the epoxy from the inside. since I'll be just using an old orchid V4 chimney for the extension, I won't have a lot of tubing to work with.

There's always this way too (middle). My first extension adding a section from another chimney. Strong and no epoxy exposed. I made the sleeve out of an aluminum drip tip. :)

I was thinking I'll apply epoxy, then the extension, then put heat shrink to keep it straight, then after it cures, cut off the heat shrink and drill through the epoxy and sand off the sides. I'm hoping it will work.

Hope so. But it sounds like a weak joint to me.

you are probably right. I don't even have the stock evaporation chamber yet, i might not need to extend it at all. but if I do, i'll try and do the sleeve that you did. just have to find a sleeve to fit. what drip tip did you use?

Whatever aluminum DT was laying around. Aluminum because it's so easy to shape etc. on a drill press.

Hi guys,I haven't been able to make it through the entire thread yet but I've already learned a lot so thank you.

I have a few KF/orchids and I love the orchid deck.
I had a few complaints with my builds though. My flavor preferences usually revolve around tank crackers, the lack of airflow and the capacity was also a small issue.
so,here's my build to try to kill three birds with one stone.

It's an orchid/lemo mutt.
I'm still waiting for the pics to upload but it's an orchid deck with the lemo chamber, chimney, glass and cap.
I'm currently half way through the first tank and so far so good. No leaks other then a little spit back after filling.

pics soon,

Cool. :) I had no idea that the Lemo chamber will thread on an Orchid base. I thought it was Kayfun size. o_O

Do you think homedepot would have a tube that is 5mm ID? I don't have any aluminum drip tips. I have time before my vape Mail shows up. I want a low profile coupler.

No, not 5mm exactly. But I find these to be very useful. HD carries a variety of diameters and lengths. Or drill out and cut to size.

Yup,that was the easy part...
all in all it took me about 3 hours to finish.

here's where it started to get fun.
I had to mill the threads down to accept the lemo glass.

Here you can see that the threads are gone but the chamber/chimney was still too long.

my solution was to remove the lip on each end of the chamber.

Here she is all clean and ready to build.
I added a subtank o ring to gasket the bottom. After I fully put it through its paces I plan to go back and cut a channel for that one and another smaller ring closer to the deck.

I wrapped these coils for my previous orchid build using what I had in front of me and they read@ .7ohm. 10 turns of 25g @3mm.
They're a pretty tight fit and have to be repositioned once the chamber is on to keep them off the sides and posts but I didn't feel like wrapping new coils for a build that I wasn't sure was going to work so I just slapped em on the Lemorch deck.

filled and waiting for leaks...

I'm just about through the first tank and it's still performing like a champ.
bottom fill is still an issue but I have a few ideas to make it top fill.
I also plan on opening up some airflow to take full advantage of that utterly huge chimney.

Im happy so far though.
I like my KST's and delta duece but the orchid has been my favorite so far and it kind of pissed me off that I couldn't use them since almost every flavor I have on the shelf is a tank cracker.

It isn't pretty but it gets the job done.
once I get it exactly how I want it I'll build another and doll it up a bit.
what do the pro's think?

True value, ace hardware and hobby shops carry all kinds of small diameter tube In brass, copper and aluminium.

ok, I found a piece (well made) a piece of tubing that is .19" and drilled the center with a #23 drill bit. I'm ready to extend my evaporation chamber. just have to wait for vape mail!!!

Eric, if that tubing is nice and strong, why not use it for the whole chimney? Cut off the KF4 chimney, drill out the top of the chamber, epoxy the tubing directly to the chamber. That's how I did my 3/8" chimneys.

Very nicely done, @bondo. I'm wondering if you know of any way to get the Lemo chimney without buying the whole atty? It's a fairly pricey way ($ and time) to get that chimney and glass. Seems like Orchid V6 Style C might be a better starting point to achieve what you are after. It has everything except the wider chimney. A one-time investment in a tap for the top cap would cost less than a single Lemo atty. Just thinking out loud here.

Screenshot 2015-04-08 at 8.19.40 AM.png

Also, before you spring for another Lemo, keep in mind that the Silverplay clone is on its way, with its glass, wide chimney, and compatibility with Orchid and Kayfun in several key areas. It will expand the parts bin considerably.

was thinking about doing that but i took your advice and used a driptip. turns out it was brass and while drilling it out for the extension to fit in it, it caught and spun in the pliers I was holding it with and ground it down to a small sleeve. so i killed two birds with one stone. perfectly tight fit. I will still epoxy it to make sure it won't leak but I think I have a winner. just need the KF4 evaporation chamber now. c'mon vape mail. !!! lol

Quick dummy noob question for you here, but how exactly does this evaporation chamber work? does it replace your chimney section completely? granted, I am trying to use this on my Silverplay, but looking at how this thing is set up, I have more questions than answers. Hell, I'm not even sure how I fill it. you can PM me if that's easier.

just the base of the orchid and evaporation chamber. no orchid chimney. to fill you take the evaporation chamber off upside down with tank attached and you will see holes where the juice flows down to the wicks, you stick your syringe in one of the holes and fill. still holding it upside down you screw the mod with the base back on

i see what you mean about trimming the chimney. gonna shave the chamber as much as i can and trim the rest to fit the bell cap. right now using the v3 chimney
I am really interested in building this atty. I have 2 orchids and really want to do this to them. I dont recall what versions i have at the moment But what is the part list for this mod if you dont mind me asking? TIA.

you may only need two bell caps if you have the right size chimney. mine is a v3 chimney from when i bought https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10009514/1861400-orchid-v3-styled-rebuildable-tank-atomizer

Sorry, Im a bit confused, You say to use the orchid base and evaporation chamber, but no orchid chimney with the KF4 evap chamber and bellcap? Would I have to cut off the chimney from the evap chamber on the orchid?

if you use the bell cap you will need either a wide bore drip tip or cut the evaporation chamber down a bit to fit a non wide bore drip tip like I have. you can toss the orchid chimney because it is not used anymore.

you want to put a bell cap on a stock orchid? or an orchid with a kayfun V4 evaporation chamber?

that particular mod is just a std nemesis in 18350 mode with a hybrid cap. the orchid is a non drilled (virgin) V3/V4 base. it has a Kayfun V4 evaporation chamber and bell cap. with my choice of drip tip it would not clear the evaporation chamber chimney. so either use a wide bore drip tip or do what I did and ground down the evaporation chamber to stop at the opening of the bell cap so that my drip tip will fit. again this is optional if you use a small diameter drip tip.

I don't actually use this mod, it has coils but no wick or juice in it. it's just a show piece. but I have a polished silver one that is setup exactly like this one that I do use on occasions.

I'm getting my new evaporation chamber, but I'm worried about the epoxy. I use it but when I need to remove it i heat it up to 100C and peel off the epoxy. I think I need to use JB weld on this hoping it can take the heat. which locttite do you use @TheWestPole I was going to use locttite 608.

My sense of it is @Jah was referring to this rig. Perhaps specify the parts, whether any have to be modified, and how.

This is the one, thanks Eric on the confirmation, I use a cherry vapes cloud chaser friction tip, so it should clear the chimney I think. I have the Infinite KF4 with the bellcap on the way from China (stuck in new york for 2 days now...sooo close) if the airflow doesnt satisfy me, I think I will just order an Orchid v4 base from Fasttech and go that route

I've been using this lately and it's serving me well. A chimney extension is not going to see a lot of heat. It's surrounded by a juice radiator. ;)

I had to cut the chimney clean off so I will install the extension into the chamber and epoxy from the inside and add a small bead outside.

I recommend inserting the chimney tube, with glue on mating surfaces only, about 1mm farther than flush with the inside wall of the chamber. After that sets aligned in position, fill the 1mm gap l with a extra bead. I have found that to be strong enough so I can completely remove all excess glue from the chamber/chimney and polish with steel wool. Will look like a manufactured part from the outside. :)

I'm not sure I follow. But I planned on inserting the extension and aligned it and set the glue from the inside to fill up to the end of the extension. After it sets I will remove the tank and add a bead around the mating surfaces.

extension epoxied. waiting for the epoxy to sure and going to trim back some of the excess. Kayfun V4 evaporation chamber with full sized kayfun tank will go on an orchid base.

@TheWestPole do you have a problem with fumes? I'm afraid the epoxy I used will cause dangerous fumes when heated. I might go to the hardware store and find an epoxy that doesn't have fumes when heated. I just used a heat gun on it to see what would happen and I got some pretty bad fumes.

If you find one that doesn't have fumes, please share cause its the only thing stopping me from attempting a wide chimney.

I'm going to let it cure for 24 hours before putting any juice or heat to it. I have something I used this same epoxy on and it's hard as a rock so I don't think heat should be much of a problem, if anything, I'll use the eposy that @TheWestPole had sugested.

I'm using this technique but I put it in the oven at 100C to cure thicker parts it pools up underneath pretty quick. I'm hoping to be able to get juice in it before I leave work.
