Squonkers are Bonkers

Any recommendations for a first mech? Safety is paramount....

In the same pursuit I opted for the Coppervape. In preparation I researched ohms law, battery safety and anything else I could read about it. Despite being the exodus crowd here there is a thorough 60+ pg CV thread on ECF that covers just about everything. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. I'm going back for a few more. A rabbit hole - not sure I'll ever buy a non-squonker at this point.

Well thank you thank you!
Pure mech is the only way I roll these days, same setup as the floris enclosures but this one uses a FD V5 connector which I'm not wild about, but I planned the recessed connector on the box around it, so I just used it.

Love it! I'll take two...

I wonder what is it exactly that makes vaping on a mech better than vaping on a reg? I am almost exclusively a mech guy..with the exception of the Halcyon which I use to blow clouds every now and then.

I think if you can see past what most people see are drawbacks to mechs (v drop, battery life)
They are much more enjoyable, especially for the hobbyist.
And they are just better. Because vape magic.

LOL, I got those too, and tried exactly the same thing (just not on the Frankie)!

It might work out, but me, I got a juicy mess inside a mod with squonk #2... While snug, it wasn't tight enough...
I did have trouble getting the hole right, and the whole inside "plug" part of the cap came out - if the plug remained with a hole in it, it MIGHT have enough grip. Then again, caps might just need threads for squonkers...

Just for the first test drive of the mod - already had bought the bottles separately and knew they were total shit

On an interesting side note, just got a lot of 10 HCigar replacement bottles and they come with a solid rubbery-feeling stopper.

I'm wondering if they could be drilled to accommodate tubing without leaks. I think they can.

Good to know someone else tried it - might skip that step then, try some other ideas

I'm always glad to learn from other people's fails, aside from my own, lol

I'd let Lucy go to a new home, Ollie is too special and I would never.
Sir Montague is on the bench now, I'm pretty excited about that one!

Any ideas when Lost Vape is gonna release their new dual 18650 squonker?

That one will probably be the mod to make it more mainstream. hopefully more atty makers will start including an extra bf pin instead of 15 fucking orings.

Lol yeah. I think I've broken 1 oring ever.

I've broken a few and had a couple wear out after TacoBell. But, damnit! It will take me a lifetime to run through all the spares laying around. Just one set of orings and a BF pin. Hold the coils and tools.

Reg mods pulse voltage. If you set it at 4 volts, that is just the average of the pulses. Mech is direct DC current, so more constant and feels smoother.

Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk

Very true. I remember now reading somewhere that all reg mods no matter what chip they use do pulse voltage. It's the frequency of the pulses that makes some appear smoother than others. Thanks my friend.

BTW since you're one of the few who have both, how does Corey's dually compare to Tbev's?

that would have to be a Reo

Yes, I would agree with this, or even a Fast Tech Reo Grand clone. Use
of one of these will grant you further experience in using mechanicals
in general. Then, after you feel competent enough you might want
to graduate to a CopperVape, or possibly stick with the Reo type
depending on your comfort level with risk. All in the idea is get
started learning, understanding the concepts of battery drop off, safe
coil building ranges, battery head space, battery safety, conductivity,
Ohm's Law, general vaping, wicking. The nuances of using mechanicals
take getting used to, a Reo serves that well.

The only downside to the REO as a first mech is the high upfront cost and the fact that unless you happen across the P67, you are limited on atty size with a Grand, and even the Grand LP

I don't know if the REO clone is even still available

I feel a Copper Vape is fine as a first mech for a conscientious person who has a healthy respect for what they are doing and has educated themselves.

Not so sure about its adequacy as a first mech though. It's a brilliant mod IMHO but if the OP is looking for safety I think a Reo is the only alternative. Haven't tried the Reo clone, but a good alternative can be a used one at a decent price point.

At a later stage you can invest and get Corey's contacts for your Reo and end up with an even greater mod.

I agree with Tamer. If safety is the main criterion in selecting a mechanical squonker, the Reo stands alone.

If the OP had mentioned other features, such as aesthetics, efficiency, size or cost, different mods may have been suggested.

But safety? Reo is the only one I know of with a fuse.

Used or blem LP grand is the way I would go. If the op can live with the overhang, it can take any bf atomizer.

Umm DC-DC converters. Pulse the battery voltage into an RC network or small HF transformer. then rectify and smooth it back out to the atty.

Mostly only the rattlesnake ones pulse the atty voltage now a days.
Why do you think that big wire wrapped doughnut is on the boards?

50+ yr Electronics Tech.

Questions? google DC to DC converters.

Why is it that people who are really into wristwatches generally prefer mechanical watches? Superficially, It doesn't make sense, just like vaping a mechanical mod doesn't really make sense. A regulated mod hits more consistently. A quartz watch keeps better time. Yet somehow a mechanical mod, just like a mechanical watch, has elegance and "soul", which regulated mods or a quartz watchs seem to lack.

For me there are pragmatic factors as well. I trust I can fix a mechanical mod with low-tech tools. I've built regulated squonkers myself, so there's no question I can swap out a DNA board when (not if) it fails, and I actually have a pile of spare DNA boards. However, it's a tedious job I'd rather not bother with. Then there's also form-factor. Regulators take up space and you just can't make a regulated mod as svelte as a mechanical.

But there is something about the quality of the vape. I don't know what it is really but my presquonking years were mostly spent with RTAs and high quality regs..Provaris, Semovar, DNA mods, SX minis ..etc. but mechs have always given me this thing that I can't figure out. After I moved to squonking, even though I still have very good regs, I found myself increasingly preferring the vape I get from mechs; even cheap ones like the Coppervape, as opposed to much more expensive regs.

There's just something about that fresh battery
Could be a matter of preference..those who prefer mechs are not necessarily backward or primitive in their thinking.

IDK man, I like a good grunting session whilst vaping every now and then.
Old battery BAD
Fresh battery GOOD

so i decided to try that dimple in the positive contact on the frankenskull clone. seems to work with all my various batteries now. i used the 2.5mm coil jig from my coilmaster set. the metal contact is not glued in or anything. took like 4 minutes to do the procedure.
