Hey Guys,

I am new to the forum annd also in building box mods. Yesterday i tried to make one of These unregulated MOSFET Box Mods. Actually my problem ist that when i press the fire Switch it seems that nothing happens. after some seconds the atomizer gebins to fire but it feels like firing wiht a week battery.

Have some of you had the same issues or does anyone know where they come from. The wiring is made exact as the Pictures from modmakers or the others here in this thread. i just have 3 differences where i´m not sure if they cause the issue.

I am using just one battery for the mod (Sony VCT4 / Vamped Cells)
I am using the Vapor Giant Atomizer with an 1,1 ohm microcoil
I am using this MOS-FET: IRFZ34N --> Vdss is 55V and Idrain is between 20 and 29 amps

Maybe you can help me cause i got no idea why it doesn´t work. When i try to connect only switch, battery and 510 without the MOSFET the atomizer works much better.

PLZ HELP!!!!!!!

What size wire are you using and pics would be really helpful. Could be bad connections (soldering), could be the build, could be battery sled. Pics are worth there weight in gold when problem solving. Also do you have a multimeter?[/QUOTE]

It's nice to see this thread remaining alive :D I just ordered all the parts for a new B box. Surprisingly, the boxes arrived first. FD v4 Slim, Snortin' Boar sled, Evolv USB charger, white LED voltmeter. Yea, baby, yea!

I have a couple boxes with almost the exact parts. With the 3d printed sleds, best soldering contacts off sled, so you don't warp/melt them.

I thought about building a lipo mod, but I'm a little daunted. I just don't know enough about them to trust myself not to lose a finger :p

With lipos it's the charging that is a worry. Constant attention to what's goin on inside the pack. I'm not paralleling multiple packs so it's pretty straight forward. Multiple packs need a balance charger and constant attention to discharge on each pack. They're not that bad as long as they are handled correctly. That's pretty much the same with all batteries tho. I'm super excited about this one. Making it for a buddy also gonna make one for myself cause I can lol

I would think so, as long as they're in parallel it draws half and half off the batteries right. I want to try out a homemade switch type thing using lg he2s that you might be able to find in vietnam. If anyone has an idea about a homemade switch to make a mosfet unnecessary or weather the switch should be positive or negative.

Building? Why yes, as a matter of fact up until 3 o'clock this morning. You know how it goes when your on a good one and those parts are coming together like lego's. Clocks are irrelevant in those situations. (wish every build was like that)

I'm a little nervous about this FET, as it took in a lot of heat while soldering. Suppose I could use a multimeter to check since I've got 3 of them but I never tested a MOSFET with a multimeter before. (just the FET alone) Anyhow, if it don't fire then I'll break it down and start again from scratch. Patience is a virtue here...

That is a very colorful build there, looks nice, and unique. Nice to see the thread still getting post.
If you are having issues soldering those mosfets up, you can take a couple alligator clips and clip them on to mosfet while your soldering it up. They will act like a heat sink and pull some of the heat off it.

Looks like you have a yellow box to do next?

Sure do! A yellow and another purple one for someone else. The yellow one will be mine though, I'm looking to throw in a bright LED to act as a flashlight since there's so much room in these boxes. I've also got a diode and chip from one of those burning green lasers with visible beams. It runs off 18650 batteries so I'm trying to decide, LED or laser. Have you built any boxes with LED's? I'm on here now trying to find pics, I know someone has done it here! I'm doing some poking around in the forums now to see what I can find.

I'm using this setup without the fuses and master switch. My boxes never go in my pocket or bags, they stay right on my desk. So I'm not too worried about the switch.

I haven't been using any led's on my stuff, cause im a stealth vaper :) Hell Im not even a big voltage meter guy but I have some so I been forcing myself to put them in. Be interesting to see what you come up with on that front. I have also seen some guys putting led bulb in their atty's lol.

You know you will be wanting to do the G box soon :rolleyes:

I will post a pic of a Hydro dipped box im getting ready to start. Green with ghost skulls, when I get to work.

I was using the helping hands for mosfets a while ago but it was taking me a super long time to get the mosfet aligned with the wire perfect for the solder. So I started pulling the alligator clips off helping hands and using them laying flat on table.

I'm on Tony's site now in another window making an order. Looks like he's got some new colors for powder coated g-boxes. Very nice stuff..
Here's that elec. conductive paint I was talking about, pretty cool stuff. It says you can even use it to dry solder but I'm not about to try that with all the power in boxes, I think it's mainly for drawing circuits and boards, but I'm liking it just to cover my solder joints. Keeps things clean... kinda ;)

That electric paint looks like it lays good on those exposed wires. Seems to be a little easier to make look good than liquid electrical tape.

Just a note, if you get the 3dprinted sleds, they are much smaller and easier to fit in a g box, but remember they have a low melting point, so if left in hot car they will probably warp. My mechanical boxes usually never leave the house so not a issue for me, I take out v v mods with kayfuns when running around town.

Looks like the Hydro dip is a go. Seems durable, and pretty cool. This is a clone Hammond box from China..LOL.. G box size.

I've seen those hammond clones on DHgate when I was poking around the other day, probably going to get some eventually. Not a bad price at all, MOQ was 20 so it's not breaking the bank too much. I've heard they are much easier to drill, how do you like them compared to the real hammonds?

Very nice work, my buddy was doing hydro graphics on xbox and PS controllers but yours has much more detail to it. I've been doing tattoo's since 1999 so I know detail when I see it! Tattooing was fun and all, but it don't pay the bills and now I've got a family so I switched up my career path. I still got my equipment, but it never gets much use these days besides family and friends every so often.

Except yesterday I engraved the inside of the cover plate on that purple box with a tattoo machine and it worked perfectly!! I wasn't sure if it would work but it sure does. That tattoo needle looked like a small glob of solder when I was done though ;)

So thanks again for recommending Tony's site earlier in this thread. I ordered 3 g-boxes, (one granny smith green powder coat and 2 raw) a few mosfets and a few 18650 sleds. His prices are legit, and he seems like a down to earth guy. I like his "anti salesman" approach

Did you see the engraving Resnik did on his boxes on the earlier post of this thread? I think he was using a different method, but never the less. If you have the skills and are a artist like for tattooing, i see those bare boxes you got coming being a blank slate for those skills ;)

Looks like for the next 3 weeks I'll be covering vacations at work, so my box building will probably be put on the back burner :( I only build at work when it's slow. LOL..

I use a big drill press we have at work so drilling has never been a issue, so I couldn't say if the clone boxes are softer yet.

Oh, I have a special sled I should get today, wait untill you see this Beotch. I'll post pic's later at work.

Since I've ended up providing some support to the Vape community since I'm selling the IRLB3034 MOSFET's on eBay, I'd like to ask some questions myself about what else I can do for you people centered around the MOSFET portion and maybe come up with a partial kit you people will like.

I've gone through threads here and other places so I'm not totally out of touch as well, but I'll spare you linking my stuff unless you ask me to since I'm here for advice not for selling.

Some of you have been buying IRLB8743 and others the better more expensive IRLB3034 MOSFET's and I'll continue to support you on those. I've also seen some of you like to use the MOSFET board from OSHA to hold the MOSFET & resistor to make your assembly easier (often covered by heatshrink), while others do it with it but additional heatshrink.

Would you people like to see partial kits with MOSFET, PCB, resistor and heatshrink all in one bundle? If I think there is enough interest I can have a batch of the PCB's manufactured for me for less then OSHA is charging to help keep the cost of the kit down. What I would need is to gauge the level of interest as well as to get feedback including things like to you prefer thicker or thinner PCB's in your projects? From what I've seen people seem to agree that 14awg wire is what can be used, but should I see about making the high current holes to allow for 12 awg or keep the board smaller with 14awg sized holes?

The basic idea is to help reduce how many different places you have to go for some of the parts while keeping shipping down.

Other feedback will be listened to, and if you tell me to shut up since I don't Vape myself, I won't take it personally.

So are you an electrician, or just a fellow tinker. Anyhow you offered advice, ive recently been told pennys are not 100%copper. What materials would you recommend for a mechanical switch so I don't need a mosfet, maybe a backgaman piece and a strip of brass. I already made contacts from 14awg sollid copper wire so I won't be needing a battery sled either. Im going to make them in altoids tins as well as wood boxes and maybe paper mache/laminate. I want to take the whole thing back to the simple concept it is, while maybe your interests lean towards monetizing, in which case, give it a touch screen and sell it for $200

ROFL, if you're going to get that fancy, then just build a cell phone into it!

I'm not interested in just monetizing, I'm also interested in trying to help as well since I've already been having to give box mod vape people advice when they have been asking about what I have which is why I found this thread to begin with. The monetization is actually a side effect of my own electronics hobby and trying to help out others with deals I've been getting to keep my own costs low.

HAHAHA, they made a vapecase to fit an iphone. but in all seriousness, im proposing the opposite, I don't want to pay 6.50 shipping on snortin boar and im broke, so Im doin this homemade all the way, except the 510 of course. and since the whole reason we're usin mosfets is because stock switches can't hang, Ill just make my own, it is just completing a circuit. The only cost so far is the contact and copper wire, so even with the box and switch it's still under $20 a mod.

Probably have to step it up a bit, search "Dickbutt" on OSHPARK, that is what is hot right now what they are producing. Gbox size is king.

I didn't want to mention what I intended on doing with the blank g-boxes on this thread because resnik was here before me and well, that's just my standard of respect. But yea, you nailed it ;)

Man I envy your access to those tools at work! You know how many times I've been kicking myself in the ass for selling all my woodworking equipment a few years back? It hurts bad lol.. me and my dad got into woodworking back in the late 90's, he was making some amazing furniture and stuff making good money. Me and him had an entire "shop" in the basement with every lathe, press, plainer, router, and drill you can imagine. But after a few years it got phased out so we decided to sell all the equipment to build a heated pool w/ pebbletech liners and all that jazz. (he ended up selling his house and moving to Florida, so it was all a total loss in the end) But ever since I've been getting into modding I keep thinking about all those tools we once had. Now I'm using a f**king dewalt and step bit lmao!! So yea, don't take that drill press for granted bro!!

Can't sell water to a well my friend. You might have better results with your marketing with adsense or eCommerce platforms, since a lot of us here are vendors ourselves. Only difference is we're sharing knowledge and networking with like-minded individuals. Not marketing. Plus there's about 20 people on ebay that are already doing exactly what you mentioned. I'm sorry for sounding like an ass but there's a time and a place, you know?

Plus, I'm a little curious as to what kind of "support" you've ever so gracefully given to the vape community without even being a vaper yourself. I mean, I can't imagine myself going over to the DIY flashlight forums and offering "support" just because I've got some 18650's in stock. ;)

The pic does Tony's paint job no justice, this box gleams and sparkles at every angle. Nervous as hell drilling it out :/

How do YOU mount the tact switches w/out a PCB board. (I've seen different methods but I'm curious as to how you do it)

I almost want to use 2 FET's with such a small switch but IDK, you think it's just a waste of time/space using 2 FET's with the tact switches?

Here's a few sleds I pieced together last night. Red one from the Vapor House, black one from Snortin' Boar.

After the solder dried, I filled in all the tiny holes and gaps with electrically conductive paint, let that dry and then put 2 coats of liquid electric tape over the connections..

The green little rubber piece is a grommet I had that goes in a tattoo needle. It's not at all necessary, just thought it looked cool. The wire runs inside the sled, I like that idea except I had to strip the wire because it wouldn't fit through the hole.

Tape on the bottom is just temporary. I filled in the bottom with a very thick layer of liquid electric tape, the scotch tape was there to keep it all uniform. It's like a square rubber bottom now completely covering the contacts.

If your on a budget, here's an idea I'll share with you. Light bulb went off one day while taking apart this charger. (odd addiction with taking apart everything electronic) The 18650 battery chargers are extremely cheap on the bay, you can even find them sometimes for 2 bucks free shipping from China. They're a little big but you can stash a lot of wires behind them. Won't fit in g-boxes but they might with a little melting and sanding.

How do YOU mount the tact switches w/out a PCB board. (I've seen different methods but I'm curious as to how you do it)

I almost want to use 2 FET's with such a small switch but IDK, you think it's just a waste of time/space using 2 FET's with the tact switches?

Here's a few sleds I pieced together last night. Red one from the Vapor House, black one from Snortin' Boar.

After the solder dried, I filled in all the tiny holes and gaps with electrically conductive paint, let that dry and then put 2 coats of liquid electric tape over the connections..

On the mini tactile switches I put a very small amount of epoxy on them with a tooth pic. I use the 2 part epoxy from Gorilla glue. Never had one fail yet.

A moment of embarrassment for me on the new sled. I BROKE the MF'er :( I made a trade to get that sled too, and I guess I wasnt ready for how brittle abs is compared to pla.

If your on a budget, here's an idea I'll share with you. Light bulb went off one day while taking apart this charger. (odd addiction with taking apart everything electronic) The 18650 battery chargers are extremely cheap on the bay, you can even find them sometimes for 2 bucks free shipping from China. They're a little big but you can stash a lot of wires behind them. Won't fit in g-boxes but they might with a little melting and sanding.

I been wanting to make a box out of that 2 bay charger, but I dont have one :( Never thought of looking for a broken one on ebay. Thay seem to sell for to high in my local groups.

That's a very unique box! And sled. Sucks that it broke though. I'm not going to be using this charger for a sled, it was just an idea. If you can make good use from it then by all means. Let me know and I'll get it sent out during the week. I ripped out the mosfet and LED from the board and snapped off the screw posts to see what size boxes it would fit in, so it won't work as a charger anymore but it's a damn good sled! Just a little big..

You considered making a box mod out of that charger? People seem to like the unique boxes like that.

I cant remember the ladies name but she is a big name modder. She made a DNA 20 out of a dual 18650 charger that was similar to this. https://www.fasttech.com/products/1421/10002741/1311002

This is the plans for the series box I'm going to make. Question, if I want to use un-insulated solid copper wire, will coating them in clear nail polish after everything is soldered together be okay? Also, does everything look right?

The diagram is correct. Not sure on the nail polish though.

So I found that with the liquid electric tape, if you warm it up a bit in the sun or by a heat source before you use it, it tends to lay in much better than it usually does and leaves a nice smooth finish. But I've gotta include the disclaimer that this stuff is EXTREMELY flammable in it's liquid form so by "heat source" I don't mean an open flame or space heater. Once the solvent evaporates out of the liquid and it dries up, it's no longer flammable. I tested this theory by lighting a small glob on fire outside. I had to see what it's perimeters were with flammability since it's going in a high powered device.

The tact switches are nothing to play around with. I broke 2 of them before I got it right. And when it comes time to mount the switch with epoxy, that 5-minute window period is waaay too short. Once the 2-part epoxy is mixed up, you've got less than 5 minutes to get your stuff set and clamped down because after a few minutes if you move stuff around the bond will get weaker and weaker the longer it takes to get things set. The way my brain works, this was a pain in the a$$, I can't be rushed. I've gotta do things on my agenda and this epoxy was not having it. So here's how I left it overnight, levied and clamped down, with some tape to keep it right were it was.

I also modified some connectors to use on the fat daddy 510 connection. The blue sizes were too small and the yellow sizes were too big, so I drilled out the blue one to make the hole big enough for the 510..

I'm not even going to lie, this box took me 3 days. But I've got a family, a business, and a house to keep up with so it was a few hours here and there, not 3 days of solid work. If I had a full day to work on boxes, I could get it done in a day. But before I got into box modding, I was that arrogant soul that thought these things can be slapped together in an hour. I would look at the $200 price tags on ebay and say "wow what a rip-off! I could make one of these for under 20 bucks in less than an hour!!" Boy was I wrong. Now I'm seeing them on the bay for 60 bucks or less!! I couldn't even. No way. I wouldn't put this much work into something and sell it for $60. I totally underestimated the skill and experience required to build a box mod. It's definitely not something everyone can do.

It would have been easier for me to put the MOSFET on the side of the sled, but I had to go and be different,. It's in there, stuffed behind the 510 connection.

I would have done a few minor things slightly different now that it's done, but this was my first g-box and these boxes are much different to work with. Certainly a challenge with the lack of space and as @Wabah58 calls it- "the gangsta lean" slant. ;)
