Young Blood Infusion Potentially Harmful

They're often called "vampire" treatments, in which people undergo infusions of a young donor's blood plasma to treat everything from aging to Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis.

But these expensive "fountain of youth" therapies are unproven and potentially unsafe, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned.

Plasma — the liquid portion of blood — contains proteins that help clot blood and can be used to treat bleeding and clotting problems.

Plasma can benefit patients with severe injuries and those whose blood can't clot due to medications or certain illnesses.

But plasma carries risks that include allergic reactions, transfusion-associated circulatory overload, transfusion-related acute lung injury, and infectious disease transmission. Patients considering using plasma for these unapproved uses should talk with their doctor first.

"Treatments using plasma from young donors have not gone through the rigorous testing that the FDA normally requires in order to confirm the therapeutic benefit of a product and to ensure its safety," explained former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb.

Frozen food jokes are always fun:
• "You know what I do when I get scared by frozen food? Ice cream!"
• "I made the mistake of biting into some half-frozen food. Then I realized doing that wasn't very well thawed out."
Amusing, but freezing veggies and fruit is no joke. It's smart.

Vegetables lose 15% to 77% of their vitamin C within a week of harvest, according to a paper in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture. Fruits lose their vitamin C as well. And a wide range of other important nutrients disappear from most produce somewhere between being picked, shipped, distributed, put on grocery store shelves, and kept in your fridge.
By contrast, studies show that most well-frozen fruits and vegetables go through little change in nutrient content. For instance, fresh spinach loses only 30% of its vitamin C after 12 whole months if it's frozen to -4 F.
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Wash and dry whole berries or fruit slices and spread on a sheet pan so they are not touching. Put them in the freezer until hard.
2. For veggies like beans or broccoli, wash, trim and blanch in boiling water, dry with paper towels, and chill in the fridge.
3. Then put fruit and vegetables in plastic bags; extract all air and seal tightly to avoid freezer burn.
4. Enjoy all winter.

Is It Normal to Rank Relationships? Did You Rank Yours Right?

Trick question – there is no “right” way to rank your relationships.

Although it is normal (in that most people find themselves doing it subconsciously or feeling encouraged to do it) to rank relationships, thus prioritizing energy expenditure and setting up a sort of automatic logic tree for who we pay the most attention to and what we’re willing to do for whom.

The funny thing is that there can be any number of factors involved in how you, deliberately or not, hierarchize your relationships…

But they all have something in common.

At the end, once your relationships are ranked by importance, quality, acts of service you’ll commit, or anything else, we all tend to believe that’s the way it is and should be.

The possible rankings are infinite. In an age when we’re able to gain unique insight into the lives of our peers, the urge to judge ourselves and others based on their relationship rankings is tempting.
Often, because of the ubiquity of the “one true love” and nuclear family ideals, the default ranking becomes something called “amatonormativity.”

That’s an Awfully Big Word

Amatonormativity supports the basic idea that we should all be striving towards finding a monogamous partner, building a life with and around them, and relegating other relationships further down the ladder.

And – let’s be clear – there isn’t anything wrong with that.​

There isn’t anything wrong about how you choose to live, as long as you’re not hurting anyone.

But sometimes, the world at large can make those who don’t choose to participate in amatonormativity feel divergent, wayward, or incomplete.

It hinges on two major unpromiseables that it treats as promiseables:

  • Your relationship with your central romantic partner will not change over time.
  • And your relationships with others will naturally matter less in the functionality of your life.

Maybe that was true sixty years ago – maybe it was never true, and we were only made to believe it was because people are easier to control when they’re lonely and isolated.

Pair-bonding was your best chance at companionship for a solid portion of human, especially Western, history, and experiencing satisfaction and joy outside of your central relationship was often met with mixed reviews.​

Here are some of the ways that prioritizing your romantic, monogamous relationship over all others can actually limit, and sometimes, harm you…

It Can Make Other Relationships Seem “Childish”

As adults, having “girl’s night” or “guy’s night” can be your opportunity to maintain bonds with relationships outside of your central partnership.​
You feed those relationships in dribs and drabs, watering those plants in three hour bursts at the bar, over dinner, at movie night…

And you don’t seem to have the undivided attention and space to explore each other and reflect on your own evolution the way that you used to.

Of course, it’s natural that the available to you for those friendship in your early 20s or teens simply isn't available anymore.

But why do we classify sleepovers as childish? Don’t we now, as children in adult skins, more than ever need the wisdom and affection of our intimate friendships?

Why do we find ourselves trying to glue friendships to the ends of our lives instead of baking them into our modus operandi?

We’re Already Unsure How to Navigate Monogamy

Despite it being our only real education on romance, marriage is tough.

And it’s tough for a few reasons – any relationship where two people spend so much time together will be fraught with mishaps. But we also spend a significant portion of our adulthoods engaged in trial by fire…

We’re unlearning toxic lessons from our parents and the media, we’re adding knowledge about our partner to our vaults every day, and we’re messing up constantly. (Don’t worry – we all seem to have that in common.)

Neglecting or mentally downgrading the value or availability of joy in our non-romantic partnerships leaves a lot of love on the table.

We can’t expect to be the exact partner our partner needs all the time – nor can we expect them to be for us.

When we center our romantic relationships above all of our other ones, we forget to make use of our emotionships.

It Narrows your Scope of Perspective

The beauty of humankind, among other things, is that we’re community-oriented.

The depth and breadth of the human experience wouldn’t be worth much if we only asked ourselves and one other person, who lives inside the same bubble as we do, about the great mysteries of life, love, and communication.

Part of forming other relationships – feeding them, raising them, and nurturing them – is about survival. We have the best chance of living a fulfilled, well-rounded, actualized life when we tap into all of our resources.

Centering a romantic relationship while undervaluing other kinds of relationships can keep parts of you asleep that long to be alive.

Again, there is nothing wrong with elevating your partner.

But the belief that relationships beyond that one are inherently less valuable, immature, or less necessary to the nourishing of your spirit is a harmful one, and not at all a universal truth.

Think about a relationship that may have languished in recent years – sometimes part of the natural ebb and flow of life – and juice it with some special attention!

Let's Get the ABCs of GMOs Down Before We NIX 'Em

Simply those three letters can make or break a healthy ad campaign for companies in the business of peddling organic whole foods.

GMO – genetically modified organisms – have long gotten a bad rap for drastically variant reasons. Some people think that editing the genes in certain foods will decrease their nutritional value. Others think GMOs can poison its potential eaters with pesticides, or possibly transfer genes. Still others are nervous about toxicity, or simply uneasy over eating something that didn’t grow the way the universe intended (better throw out your Brussel sprouts then).

Similar to the American political process, the debate over GMOs in Europe reached its apex with a fever pitch from anti-GMO lobbyists maybe a decade ago. The mainstream media reported on the near-constant noise being made from the GMOs-gotta-go-camp, and the near-constant refrain from the biochemists and GMO-reps who insisted the fears were unfounded.

The result?

We all ended up a little bit muddier about what GMOs are, why they exist, whether they can hurt you, and how they can be used to help you.

Let’s start with the basics…

What are GMOs?
ABCs of GMOs

In a sense, genetically modifying plant life is a practice as old as agriculture itself. Humans have been cross-breeding plants to achieve specific measures since they learned they could.

Today’s strawberries, for example, are cross-bred between North and South American varieties.

But cross-breeding in nature takes time and generations, and it’s difficult to control for the exact change you’re interested in making.​

After much groundwork was laid over centuries (think: Gregor Mendel tracing the breeding of peas and founding modern genetics), two biochemists in 1973 figured out how to insert DNA from one bacteria to another.

For the next several decades, GMO made quick moves.

Human insulin was actually the first GMO product available for sale, and its presence on the market was quickly followed with a governing body whose purpose was to regulate the safety of future GMO products.

The FDA’s 1992 policy insisted that any GMO produce or food sold to the public must meet the same safety standards of traditionally bred counterparts.

By the early 2000s, Europe had its own regulatory body within the WHO, the European FDA – FAO.​

But the public felt uncomfortable about the very process through which gene editing transforms our food. You see, DNA strands get cultured inside a bacterium and then connected to the nucleus of plant cells via a virus.

No one wants to think about viruses and bacteria cultivating their food, and so the anti-GMO movement was born the same way the anti-vaccine movement was… Largely misinformation based on thinking certain words are bad.
Although, there’s another angle to the anti-GMO stance that makes a bit more sense. One of GMOs’ greatest accomplishments has been modifying plant seeds to create herbicide-resistant strains of crops.

That means that the chemical industry can continue to profit from making Roundup and selling them in huge quantities to the farmers of America’s midlands without the corn crop suffering. Except…

Those chemicals wash off into our water and what remains, we eat.

This argument isn’t really about GMOs themselves – it’s about the reckless and harmful control that corporations have over our government. If the government can’t get out from under the thumb of companies like Monsanto, Roundup’s maker, that’s a huge problem.

What it isn’t is a judgment on the actual practice of genetically modifying organisms.

And in fact, editing genes of plants might be the climate crisis solution we’ve been looking for…

How to Use the Principle of GMOs Responsibly

We’ve already stripped the soil of its nutrients from centuries of stifling biodiversity and replacing the way we farm with a monoculture system. We’ve already affected the presentation of the seasons, annual rain events, the availability of pollinators, and migratory patterns of wildlife.

Man’s hubris has altered nature. Unless we completely halt contact with nature, it won’t revert.

That seems unlikely, somehow.

So it would behoove us to use the tools at our disposal that aren’t inherently harmful to reduce future degradation.

Recently, a new method has been discussed in the scientific community. Plants and crops can be genetically altered to enhance photosynthesis, which would help them absorb more carbon than they naturally do to curb existing emissions.

Scientists also claim that they can use gene editing to make trees and roots grow faster, speeding up the absorption of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Gene editing is different from genetically modifying in one key way: Scientists alter the existing DNA of a plant rather than infuse its DNA with material from another source.

But the principle is the same – we are using our capabilities to change the natural design of the universe.

And we should use that power wisely, to help sustain ourselves and the Earth at the same time.​
