The Disease That Almost Everybody Gets
We all have trouble controlling our weight at some time in our lives. Hopefully, it’s just puppy fat as a teen, then it’s gone.
But obesity is a disease. It’s a serious medical condition and costs many lives. It leads to diabetes and that’s a fast-moving disease which will accelerate aging in your body. You are also far more likely to die of heart disease, liver or kidney failure and your chances of getting cancer are seriously increased.
In a paper published by the Public Library of Science and Medicine, July 8, 2014, researchers found that the risk of dying rose continuously with increasing BMI (body mass index). That’s an older measure of obesity.
People are literally eating themselves to death. Don’t go there!
Overweight isn’t much better. Another study published in March, 2009 and reported by WebMD, shows that weighing a third more than your ideal weight could reduce your life by three years on average.
For most people, a third more than the optimum means carrying 50 to 60 pounds (or 20 to 30 kilos) of excess weight. If you are becoming overweight or obese, avoiding further weight gain could well add years to your life.
Researchers looked at data from 57 existing studies, examining in total the mortality rates for nearly 900,000 adults. They found that each additional increase of 5 in the BMI translated into a 30% increase in any cause of death.
It also translated into a 40% increase in death from heart disease, stroke, and other vascular diseases; a 60% to 120% increase in death from diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disease; a 10% death from cancer; and a 20% increase in death from lung disease. Findings took into account age, sex, and smoking history.

Here’s some food for thought. Your brain is actually burning about 300 calories a day just by thinking.
That’s about as many calories as a McDonald’s Cheeseburger. So, thinking deeply actually helps us lose weight! Here’s a few thought exercises to help you think.
Think about…
  • A memory in your life that you were most proud of yourself. Something you did that filled you with joy and happiness.
  • Something in your day that you feel grateful for, something in this moment that you want to be thankful for.
  • A goal or dream you will achieve in the near future. Something you are working towards that you truly believe you will make into your reality.
You can choose to think about the past, present or the future.
Thinking positively helps us live positively.
This is important nowadays when we’re surrounded with so much negativity. I’m sure you’re noticing it too, especially if you’ve been watching network news, and going on social media, right?

Hi Jimi,

Today I've got a special recipe for you to keep on hand as we head into the colder months in the northern hemisphere.

Fall and winter weather can be tough on skin. Cold temperatures cause chapping and bleeding. Dry wintry air pulls moisture from our skin and leaves it brittle.

Below I've shared my family's tried and true first-aid skin balm! It's our go-to for any cold-weather discomfort or minor injury. It soothes pain, stops itching, brings down inflammation and rashes, and helps the cells of your skin heal up quickly!

This recipe is super moisturizing. Coconut and herbal oils are our two bases, and they work together to rehydrate the skin. Plus, they are antibacterial and rich in vitamin E, which fights against the symptoms of aging. So you can apply this balm to uninjured, dry skin which tends to happen as the days get colder.

*Please note: To make the balm, you'll need a double boiler. But not to worry if you don't have one of these - you can use everyday kitchen items to make one! All you'll need is a pot that is about halfway filled with water, and a glass bowl that can sit in the top of the pot, suspended about 2 or 3 inches above the surface of the water (it doesn't need to be a perfect fit for it to work!).

Healing Skin Balm Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp. Calendula herbal oil
  • 1 Tbsp. Plantain herbal oil
  • 1 Tbsp Coconut oil
  • 2 drops Tea tree essential oil
  • 2 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 1-2 tsp. Beeswax (depending on how firm you want the salve)
  • 1 ounce salve tin
Instructions:

  1. Place calendula, plantain oil, and coconut oil into the double boiler, on low heat
  2. Heat for 20-30 minutes. *make sure not to simmer, just warm*
  3. Add the beeswax, stir continuously until dissolved.
  4. Add tea tree and lavender essential oils and stir gently for 5 minutes.
  5. Pour into the salve tin.
  6. Leave the lid off until fully cool.
Once you allow this fragrant oil to cool for about 20 to 30 minutes, it will firm up into a nicely textured balm that you can apply directly to the skin.

An Enzyme that's Also a Polluting-Plastic-Eater? Tell Me More…

Spoiler alert: it’s actually not the first man-made plastic-eating enzyme.

But it is six times faster than the last one.

Let’s back up…

We know plastic takes hundreds of years to biodegrade, and given our recklessly ubiquitous use of plastics in the world, that’s a big problem.

When most people consider the plastic crisis, they think of towering landfills, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and giving single-use water bottle-buyers dirty looks (even if we know logically that buying a water bottle doesn’t make anyone a bad person.)

The reason plastic doesn’t break down for so long is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is the most common thermoplastic used in single-use bottles, garments, carpets, and more.

One report from the Pew Charitable Trusts even projected that new plastic polluting our oceans could triple by 2040, up to 29 million metric tons per year.

And the approach will need to be multifaceted – we won’t find one single solution that rids the world of its plastics.
We’ll need all hands on deck in the scientific community in order to extract our existing waste, come up with innovative and sustainable solutions for the future, and attempt to recycle the plastic in the environment to avoid burning more fossil fuels.

That’s why scientists labored throughout 2016 to come up with a viable, working enzyme called PETase, that uses principles found in organic bacteria to break PET down to its structural atoms.

When Japanese researchers found Ideonella sakaiensis strain 201-F6 bacteria in the sludge outside of a bottling factory, eating through the PET in the plastics, they knew they were onto something.

PETase, the eventual enzyme they developed, works by splitting chemical bonds, or esters, in PET. That breaks the actual PET compound down into molecules small enough to be eaten by bacteria.

The PETase created in the lab was more effective than the microbe found in the dirt, and everyone was pretty excited. The microbes were shown to be able to eat away at the PET, not at breakneck speeds, but much faster than the several centuries that would’ve been required without it.

PETase, however, starts to break down PET in about 96 hours.

It was pretty groundbreaking when it was discovered – but science moves fast.

And recently, researchers have been able to combine PETase with another enzyme to turbocharge the speed at which PET returns to atom form.

The New and Improved PETase

In a report released on September 23rd, 2020, this new combination enzyme can eat plastic up to six times faster than PETase alone.

This has enormous implications for the future of recycling.

We won’t get into the weeds about the molecular science of it all, but here’s how it works: PETase meets another enzyme called MHETase.
When the two mix, they break PET down at twice the speed. But they don’t just mix...

The researchers used an X-ray device called the Diamond Light Source, with rays 10 billion times brighter than the sun, to create a blueprint of MHETase.

Using that blueprint, they then determined how to suture the DNA of MHETase to PETase, harnessing not just the power of both enzymes individually, but the power of the beast the two create when they are turned into one enzyme.

This stitching is actually not at all uncommon in the sustainable research space.

It’s frequently used in the creation of biofuels, the likes of which international oil giant BP is now investing heavily in.

Although the new enzyme is certainly impressive, it’s not the end of the road for our plastic troubles. Researchers have received funding to continue experimenting on recycling the PET in plastic.

By recycling it, we won’t have to generate new plastic. We’ll also keep new PET from finding its way into our wilderness and water supplies.

But the issue of recycling – and how rigidly the rules are being followed, if at all –is an entirely separate conversation, worthy of its own article.

For now, it’s important to stay informed about developments currently enfolding and on the horizon that may change the landscape of our pollution future, especially when one sustainable solution borrows from another.

We work our best when we combine skill sets and methods, and so does the microbial kingdom.

The answer to our unnatural plastic problem seems to be found within nature itself.

Gut Bacteria May Affect Blood Pressure

The composition of your gut bacteria may play a role whether you develop high blood pressure, a new study finds.
An animal study, conducted by Baylor College of Medicine researchers, looked at whether high blood pressure may be influenced by the type of bacteria that reside in the gut.
Special: Weird Gut Bacteria Linked to Digestion, Heart, Obesity, Brain Problems
The researchers studied two sets of rats, one group with high blood pressure ("hypertensive") and one with normal blood pressure ("normal").
They removed a portion of the biological material from the large intestine of each group. All animals were then given antibiotics for 10 days to reduce their natural microbiota.
After the course of antibiotics, the researchers transplanted hypertensive microbiota to normal blood pressure rats and normal microbiota to animals with hypertension.
They found that the group treated with hypertensive microbiota developed elevated blood pressure. A more surprising result is that the rats treated with normal microbiota did not have a significant drop in blood pressure, although readings did decrease slightly.
This study, which appeared in Physiological Genomics, raises the question of whether probiotic supplements could play a role in reducing high blood pressure, the research team says.

Asparagus Basil Soup

Fresh basil adds serious flavor to any vegetable on the program and an excellent way to keep your vegetable dishes from becoming mundane. For a flavor twist on this soup you can also use cilantro in place of basil.
Ingredients​
  • 2 cups broth, any variety

  • 4 ounces asparagus, chopped
  • 2 tablespoon chopped chives or shallot
  • ½ jalapeño or ½ green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 lemon, zested
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons basil leaves, torn or sliced
Directions​
  • Place the broth in a small saucepan along with the asparagus, chives or shallot, and peppers.
  • Simmer over medium heat 5 minutes until the asparagus is tender. Stir in the lemon zest, paprika, pepper flakes if using, and basil leaves.

Serve immediately

Most of the major risk factors that age your heart — such as high cholesterol, obesity, and high blood pressure — are well-known. But one factor is often overlooked: too little sleep.

All of us need between eight to 10 hours a night. With less than that, your body will be under constant stress, which leads to high blood pressure and heart disease.

Unfortunately, most people say that the quantity and quality of their sleep diminishes as they get older. It doesn’t have to.

Most people have habits that work against getting a full night’s sleep. And when they change them, they find that elusive slumber they crave.

Here are some tips for better sleep:

• Get checked for obstructive sleep apnea. If you snore, it’s possible you have this common sleep disorder, which stresses the heart and is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and other ailments.

• Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Your body performs best with a predictable lifestyle.

• Wind down before bed. Stay away from computers and TV; read a book, turn the lights down, and your sleep cycle will return to normal.

• Banish your laptop and smartphone from the bedroom. The “blue light” from these devices may disrupt your body’s sleep-wake cycle.

• Avoid caffeine. Don’t drink coffee or caffeinated tea after 5 p.m.; or, if you’re sensitive to it, earlier.

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia among older people. The condition is characterized by memory decline that includes difficulty remembering events as well as recognizing family and friends.
When an Alzheimer’s sufferer’s brain is biopsied, the tissue contains many abnormal clumps of protein called amyloid plaques, as well as other tangled bundles of fibers. Scientists have been searching for a cure for decades.
The drug Verubecestat works by inhibiting an enzyme (BACE1) that reduces amyloid in the brain. The results of a phase 3 trial were published in JAMA, showing that Verubecestat reduced amyloid in the cerebrospinal fluid and the brain of subjects, but the clinical outcomes were not changed.

In other words, Alzheimer’s disease progressed among those treated with the medication to reduce amyloid levels.
The authors of the study wrote, “. . . disease progression [in Alzheimer’s disease] may be independent of [amyloid] production or, alternatively, the amyloid hypothesis of Alzheimer’s disease may not be correct.”
This study showed that altering a clinical marker — amyloid levels — in Alzheimer’s did nothing to slow the disease’s progression.
When I first heard about this study, I predicted it would fail. By the time the brain is being remodeled with amyloid plaques and tangles, it may be too late to save it.
Hopefully, this study will spur Alzheimer’s researchers to search for the real underlying mechanism of the disease.
I have maintained for years that toxic exposures coupled with nutritional deficiencies set the stage for chronic diseases like Alzheimer’s. Only when we find the real cause of the illness will we make progress toward curing it.

Suicides accounted for over 48,344 deaths in 2018 (in America alone). This type of death has been on the rise for the past 3 decades.
I’ve personally lost a close friend, an Iraq war veteran to PSTD / Suicide in 2009. And the feeling sadness at that loss is such a heavy burden. I’ve often said I’d rather listen to your story than to attend your funeral. So if you have a story to tell, to get off your chest… Write to me.

Aluminum isn’t just in antiperspirant.
  1. Bread
  2. Flour
  3. Baking powder
  4. Food coloring
  5. Grains
  6. Processed cheese
  7. Table Salt
  8. Tea (green and black)
  9. Antacids
  10. Pots and pans
They all expose you to aluminum. (1, 2, 3)
If you eat things like bread and tea I encourage you to also eat these vegetables if you want to keep aluminum out of your body.
Remember when everyone started switching to natural deodorant because of the aluminum in antiperspirant?
