Study: Aspirin Benefits COPD

Many Americans take a daily low-dose aspirin to protect their hearts. Now it appears aspirin may also reduce flare-ups of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

In a study of COPD sufferers, researchers found that aspirin was linked to fewer moderate exacerbations, but not severe bouts, of the lung disease. It also reduced moderate and severe episodes of labored breathing.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, which looked at nearly 1,700 people with COPD. About 45% of participants reported regularly taking a low-dose (81 mg) aspirin daily at the start of the study.

The researchers found the aspirin users had fewer flare-ups over three years.

Patients also reported better quality of life and less shortness of breath, compared with patients who did not use aspirin, according to the study.

Jimi, if you listen to most pediatricians, you’ll quickly get the impression that vaccines are “the best thing since sliced bread” and that the chances of being harmed by a vaccine are infinitesimal and that anyone who questions the safety of vaccines is "a few fries short of a happy meal."

However …
  • Did you know that, according to the US Dept of Health & Human Services (DHHS) website, over the past 31 years (from 1989 to 2020), there has been over $4.57 BILLION in total outlays to families of persons who were damaged by vaccines?
  • Did you know that when doctors bill insurance companies, they have diagnostic codes referred to as “ICD-10” codes for the most common symptoms, and there are almost 2 dozen ICD-10 codes to indicate vaccine injury and vaccine poisoning?

Chronic pain is one of the biggest obstacles to wellness (by limiting exercise, depleting endorphins, and promoting inflammatory processes).

And for obvious reasons it can impair one's ability to get directly involved in regenerative agirculture through farming and gardening.

My own degenerative disk disease (beginning with a back injury 38 years ago) and chronic myofascial pain (not fibromyalgia) are some of the reasons I'm not directly involved in regenerative agriculture as a farmer (yet).

THANKFUL​

It's Thanksgiving Sunday here in Canada, and of course it's got me thinking about my favourite topic, gratitude and thankfulness. With families separated when they should be together, friends avoiding each other instead of gathering around, and a whole lot of anxiety and uncertainty abounding, it seems like there isn't too much to be thankful for this year.

Times of challenge and change can be scary as heck, and often the LAST thing we feel like feeling is gratitude. But, I would argue that there is no more important time to focus on joy and thankfulness than when we are facing both of these things.

Sometimes, it comes effortlessly, but right now, we may have to really work at it. We don't always have to wait for joy to find us though; if you are struggling to find things to be grateful for, see what moments of joy you can create. Jump on Zoom with a family member or friend while you're cooking Thanksgiving dinner and do it together, like you usually would but just modified a little. Go for a walk and really take in the beauty of this time of year; it's one of my absolute favourite seasons here in Canada because of the stunning foliage and cosy vibe. If you have a fireplace, snuggle up with a good book and dive in. Make your favourite Thanksgiving treat, even if it's just you this year who will be enjoying it. Whatever it is that brings you the most joy, do it.

Consciously focusing on the positives naturally occurring around me, and creating them when they weren't happening on their own, is one of the key things that got me through cancer as well as I did, and it's something that I have realized I can take with me into any of my present challenges and those waiting for me in the future. It gives me an incredible amount of confidence in my ability to face head on whatever is coming next, and it can absolutely do the same for you.

So, fill this weekend with the things you can right now that bring you joy, that make you feel lighter, that connect you with your soul, that give you that sense of deep gratitude for being alive. And for more tips on how to deal with times of challenge and change, check out this week's blog below.

A 2017 Lancet commission on dementia found that 35% of cases were preventable if people managed high blood pressure, obesity, hearing loss, depression, diabetes, inactivity, and isolation in later life.

But missing from that equation was the influence of emotional health in midlife — a critical period for dementia-related brain changes and psychosocial crises — on the development of cognitive problems later on.

Using decades of data, researchers found that a sense of personal growth and a continuing drive to pursue improved health and happiness at age 52 set you up for better cognition at 69. In other words, look for new experiences and aim for self-improvement.

Here are six things you can do to protect your brain as you age:

1. Expand your circle of friends and acquaintances by helping others.

2. Learn new skills and pursue whatever you're curious about.

3. Work to improve your health: Increase daily activity (go for 10,000 steps daily or the equivalent) and eat a plant-based diet, free of ultraprocessed foods.

4. Avoid exposure to toxins from smoking/vaping.

5. Manage your stress response.

6. Get enough sleep (seven to eight hours) nightly.

Electroceuticals Moves Foward Apace

Over the years, you’ve seen me promote and applaud micro-current therapy (MCT, which is not TENS or even similar), as one of the wonders of our age. It really does work miracles: stops pain in its tracks, has repeatedly side-stepped the need for amputations, speeds up healing of fractures, can work amazing cosmetic improvements, straightens crooked spines, cures infections and inflammatory conditions of all kinds and, yes, produces a fiercely positive immune response (so, good against viruses! Know what I mean?)

MCT even helps animals, which seem to like its soothing nuances. It’s particularly good for horses and several veterinarians I know use it as FIRST line treatment for horses with injuries or sprains.

Tree Nuts Cut Heart Disease Risk in Diabetics

People with Type 2 diabetes who ate five or more servings of certain kinds of nuts weekly dropped their odds of heart disease by about 20%, compared to people who ate less than a serving a month.

Five or more weekly servings of nuts also appears to lower the risk of premature death from heart disease or any other cause by about one-third for people with Type 2 diabetes.

Specifically, nuts grown on trees seemed to provide more heart-health benefits than peanuts, which grow underground. Tree nuts include walnuts, almonds, cashews, Brazil nuts, pistachios, pecans, macadamias, hazelnuts, and pine nuts.

What is it about nuts that makes them so heart-healthy for people with diabetes? They seem to help control blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Eating nuts also appears to help dampen inflammation and improve blood vessel health.

Heart specialist Dr. Terrence Sacchi, who was not involved with the study, agrees that nuts can be beneficial, but added, "Nuts are good in moderation, but you can't be eating 18 handfuls of nuts. Nuts contain a lot of fat; it's good fat, but gaining weight would counteract any benefit."

Sacchi also pointed out it's important to limit the salt in nuts, because excess salt can increase your heart disease and stroke risk. He said the best type of nuts are raw, unsalted nuts.

Being crazy busy about to launch this huge event combined with the world melting down… seemed like the perfect time to get a horse!

Teddy’s been riding since before she could walk and has dreamed of giving the kids the same experience growing up, and Ryder especially isn’t getting any younger, so we figured if not now, when?

Our new family member Chisum (came with the name / old John Wayne western) is only two years old so really feels quite a bit like getting a fourth child considering their lifespan.

Now all we need are chickens, ducks and a goat and we’ll be real homesteaders in our little house in the middle of the woods! ;)

I know what a breast cancer lump feels like – I found cancerous lumps twice in my life and I am convinced that a regular Breast Self-Exam gave me time and options to deal with breast cancer.
