2021 – The Time Is NOW To Start Learning Herbal Medicine!

Wow! 2020 has been a unique year, to say the least.

Everyone's resiliency has been tested as well as our ability to adapt to our changing environment.

During all of this, I would say that taking the time to care for yourself is now more important than ever.

The free and easy ways to help yourself is:
? Making sure to be conscious of your breathing,
? Prioritize adequate sleep that is good quality,
? Sometimes do some fasting if your constitution can handle it, and
? Eat your veggies!

One of the best things anyone can do is eat a diversity of veggies.

All pretty simple, right?

In my experience, simple is what usually gets the best results since it is something you can do on a regular basis and all of the things mentioned above can never be found in a supplement bottle.

Yours in health,
Dr. Jared

Today's Motivation:

Friday

January 01, 2021

Take a step back for a moment and regain perspective. Don't get too caught up in the situation to the point you can't see outside of it. Pause, reflect, and take your power back. Remove your feelings and look at the situation objectively. Things are often not as they first seem. Take a moment to consider the bigger picture. It will help to reduce distressing emotions.

Hi Jimi,

Since 2015, life expectancy in the US has been decreasing. The last time this happened was between 1915 and 1920 during the First World War and following the Spanish Flu epidemic. But we can’t blame our current situation on COVID-19, this is the product of poor diet, an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, lack of mental health care, and other preventable factors.

I don’t know about you, but I plan to live to be at least 120 and to feel well while I do it. I’d like my kids to do the same, but even longer. The same goes for all the other future generations. And I strongly believe it’s possible.

In fact, I have actually experienced the possibilities of aging backwards—I feel better now, at 61, than I did at 31. That’s because I’m always researching and experimenting on myself to find ways of reversing the symptoms associated with aging (and it’s working!).

There are certain basic principles we can follow to dramatically improve our healthspan and lifespan right away.

For example, we know that eating more vegetables and fruits is associated with a reduced risk of all-cause mortality, especially cardiovascular risk which is important to note, considering that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US.

We also know that for every 10% increase of ultra-processed foods in our diets we see a 14% increased risk for all-cause mortality. Junk food is also linked to psychological distress.

While I always look to food first when it comes to promoting optimal health, there’s so much more to longevity than eating more plants. There are so many nuances to diet, like consuming more polyphenol-rich foods to fight oxidative stress and support the gut microbiome, as well as factoring in when to eat instead of just what to eat.

And of course, if we’re thinking about expanding longevity we have to think beyond diet. We have to think about how we move our bodies, take care of our minds, and even how we nurture our relationships.

On my own journey of learning to age backwards, I’ve found so much incredible research that isn’t common knowledge. I knew I had to share it, so I created my Longevity Roadmap docu-series, with the help of my colleagues at The UltraWellness Center.

Throughout this series, we share the most cutting-edge science on how to feel younger at any age. We guide you through the latest science on whole-body health and longevity, with tons of simple, accessible tips that you can use right now.

Another birthday doesn’t have to mean another symptom—getting older can mean feeling better and getting more joy out of every day.

You can check out my Longevity Roadmap docu-series for free, between January 13th and 20th. Just click here to learn more.

One of my grandmothers was fat, she didn't eat well, and didn't exercise. She lived till she was 99 or 100. We weren't close, so not sure which age she made it to. Pretty good age for not taking care of herself.

New Symptom Tied to Worsening Heart Failure

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

There’s a new symptom that indicates worsening heart failure in people with advanced cases of the condition —and it’s as simple as bending over to tie your shoes.

Heart failure means the heart is too weak to efficiently pump blood, which causes fluid to build up in the body.

Traditional symptoms include shortness of breath that occurs with exertion or lying down, but doctors have often wondered whether such an occurrence while bending over could be indicative as well.

Special: Dr. Crandall Saved His Own Heart With This

Researchers enrolled 102 patients who had been admitted for cardiac testing. They measured how well the patients’ hearts pumped when lying flat, then they repeated this procedure with 65 patients whom they had asked sit in a chair for two minutes and then bend over for one.

Patients who became short of breath had excess fluid in their bodies, which elevated their blood pressure. When they bent over, the blood pressure became even higher, the researchers found. They dubbed this new symptom “bendopnea.”

The researchers say that this symptom should not be used to diagnose heart failure in general. But in patients with advanced heart failure, it could mean their condition was worsening and they should call a doctor.

As most older adults and seniors know, clearer thinking starts to slip.
Maybe it’s forgetting places, faces, names, or words.
What’s worse is if you’re taking any of these types of drugs, a common side effect is forgetfulness
Drugs That May Cause Memory Loss:

1. Antianxiety drugs
2. Cholesterol drugs
3. Antiseizure drugs
4. Antidepressant drugs
5. Narcotic painkillers
6. Parkinson's drugs
7. Hypertension drugs
8. Sleeping aids
9. Incontinence drugs
10. Antihistamines
I know several people who take at least 2-3 of those types of medicines daily. And their struggle with memory loss is scary. Seems like lots of prescription meds cure one thing, but give you other ‘side-effects’ to deal with. Which is why I’m such a fan of all-natural remedies and cures.
So getting more brain-boosting foods into your diet is important to keep your thinking clear, your memory sharp, and you reduce your risk of dementia and other neurological diseases.
=> The Know-it-All Guide to Brain-Boosting Foods
It’s today’s free report, and as an added bonus it comes with some great recipes on how to incorporate these foods into delicious meals.
You’ll discover that brain-boosting foods aren’t exotic (they’re in every supermarket). They’re simply whole foods found in nature that are easy to find and can be eaten every day.
By stocking your pantry and fridge full of these brain-boosting foods and eating them on a regular basis, you’ll be sure to feel like a healthier, more focused version of yourself in no time.

You’ve waited for THIS (memory loss breakthrough)

Jamu Shot - A Woman's Tonic
Jamu makes for a lovely cure-all kind of drink. The lemon brings an alkalizing effect to the jamu, and the peel adds liver detoxifying and antiviral benefits. Turmeric and ginger work together as powerful anti-inflammatories that help stimulate digestion and ease muscle pain.
Some ways to use this jamu tonic:
  • You can drink it with the onset of a cold.
  • When having a tummy ache.
  • When bowels aren’t moving as they should.
  • When you are cold.
  • When hot flashes take over.

Immune-Boosting Bone Broth
Craving something warming to build up your immune system? There’s nothing better than a steaming mug of homemade bone broth infused with immune-boosting astragalus to help protect your body. Bone broth is also great at resetting your digestion, as it helps heal the gut lining.
Bonus: I’ve included 2 versions of this recipe—one uses your stovetop and the another uses your slow cooker.

Milk Thistle Tea
I love sweater weather and warming up with my two dogs, Charlie and Nella, during these winter months. When the weather turns frigid, I turn to a large mug of this warming milk thistle ginger tea for comfort. It builds up my liver health (responsible for performing detoxification) and immune system at the same time.

What is crowding out?

The concept of crowding out is simple—it means that you make it a point to add a few highly detoxing recipes into you daily or weekly routine. This way, before you know it, you've just crowded out foods that don't really belong in your diet.

To try this out, we compiled the below detoxing recipes for you. I hope they inspire you to crowd out crappy food and make room for more nourishing ingredients in your meals.

Bitter Greens Salad
If you feel like your digestion needs help moving along, this Bitter Greens Recipe is a great remedy. Bitter food activates your taste buds, which stimulates bile flow and in turn, promotes digestion. For the bitter greens you can use a mix of endive, dandelion greens, and arugula to promote natural detoxification of the liver, too

Well folks, we've made it over into a new year, 2021 is finally here!
What a tumultuous and challenging year that was - it's honestly hard to find words to sum up 2020, a year I think most of us won't forget (even though a lot of us may want too!)
But one thing I found encouraging was seeing how much strength and courage people held in their hearts while facing a lot of hardship and trauma - that to me is something worth celebrating.
So here's to looking forward into 2021 with new perspectives and experiences, with further courage and strength, holding with us our plant allies, so we can continue this growth into even more compassionate and resilient humans.
I believe that challenge strengthens a person, and reinforces a deeper wisdom that is gained from having to confront challenge and trauma. Because when we face these uncomfortable places, we gain something deeper, a greater understanding about life and it's purpose, and from that, we learn to better assist those who need our help. So I encourage you in the coming New Year - if you haven't already - to make an intention to continue to work through any traumas, not to encourage more suffering, but so that you can find more healing in those parts of yourself that don't yet feel whole, so you too can share this wisdom with those who seek your help.
Because becoming a healer means we must heal ourselves.
SO, with that in mind, I'd like to kick off the New Year talking about what it means to become a holistic healer, and I'd like to share a few perspectives that distinguishes the difference between true holistic healing from the Vitalist tradition as opposed to a more "biomedical" approach to herbalism that some folks practice.
This is in preparation for a very exciting mini course coming to you in just a few weeks on vitalist herbal medicine, which you won’t want to miss!
Ancient traditions from around the world, understood that we are a reflection of nature, that our organ systems and tissues mirror patterns seen within ecosystems, rather than organs working like gears in a physiological machine. In this newest blog episode, I'm sharing about the importance of cultivating an ecological model of viewing the human body, and how this can help us see and access the true nature of people, to find true holistic healing. Something that I believe is needed now more than ever.
Blessings to you and your loved ones this New Year, and thank you again for being apart of the community here at Evolutionary Herbalism, it's an honor to serve you on your plant path.
In the spirit of the plants,
Sajah

The pandemic has put a spotlight on the mental health crisis in a new and immediate way — a way that cannot be ignored. The stress, anxiety, isolation and uncertainty of this time are not only raising awareness, but pushing us as individuals to have the honest conversations we always needed to have about mental health — especially when it comes to taking action.

So this Mental Health Month, we have an opportunity. As the pandemic accelerates, we can take steps to identify our own individual signs of stressors. And as a society, we can emerge into a new normal where we are much more open about the challenges we’re facing and committed to course-correcting in ways we desperately need.

Here are a few daily steps — to build the mental resilience to help you navigate this new normal. Some of the steps are:

1. Set a news and social media cut-off time. While being informed can help us feel more prepared in a public health crisis, setting healthy limits to our media consumption can help us have a restorative rest and put the stressful news into perspective.

2. Focus on the rising and falling of your breath for 10 seconds. Pausing several times a day to simply breathe allows you to feel less tense and more present in your life.

3. When you’re washing your hands, take the 20 seconds to think of three things you are grateful for. This will help you lower your risk of viral infection while reinforcing a more positive mindset.

4. When you feel overwhelmed, focus on your breathing instead of reaching for your phone. We often use our phones to distract us from challenging moments, but this often leaves us more stressed and more disconnected from what matters most. Allow yourself a moment to turn inward instead and focus on your breathing.

5. If you find yourself judging your emotions or responses around the pandemic, remind yourself that they are normal and justified. Studies have found that pathologizing your responses by viewing them as “something wrong with you for reacting so strongly” actually increases your anxiety. Instead, say something to yourself like, “You are going through a crisis, and you are reacting in a normal way to an abnormal situation.”

6. When you feel overwhelmed by a problem you face at work, identify the smallest possible step you can take to address it. As you face incredibly complex challenges, practice breaking them down into small, manageable steps by asking yourself, “What’s the smallest step forward I can take in this moment?” This increases your sense of control and self-efficacy.

I hope these skill steps help you as you’re going through your day.

Warmly,

Pirie
