Good news!
The known list of modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer’s Disease has grown from 12 to 14. In other words, research now suggests that 45% (up from 40%) of dementia occurrences are preventable. I expect this number of preventable cases is even higher and the list of modifiable risk factors will continue to grow as we learn more.
So what does this mean? There is even more we can do to prevent, delay and yes, even in some cases reverse Alzheimer's.
The new commission report highlights that addressing 14 modifiable risk factors, including the addition of two new risk factors - vision loss and high cholesterol - could prevent or delay 45% of dementia cases. The Lancet Commission urges action from childhood onwards, emphasizing that it’s never too early or too late to adopt healthy habits to reduce dementia risk.
Keeping up with and contributing to this kind of research is essential as I work diligently behind the scenes to be able to support more people and reduce the suffering related to Alzheimer’s and other dementias. That is what the whole mission is about - helping more people across the world stay sharp and live meaningful lives as they age.
