Phthalates May Increase Diabetes Risk for Women

Hormone-disrupting chemicals commonly found in plastics, cosmetics, and everyday household products could contribute to diabetes risk in women, a study has found. These chemicals, known as phthalates, are also linked to reduced fertility and various hormone-related disorders.

During the study, researchers tracked 1,308 women over six years, using urine samples to measure phthalate exposure. They found that white women with the highest levels of certain phthalates were 30-63% more likely to develop diabetes, whereas Asian and Black women did not show a similar risk.

To minimize phthalate exposure, experts recommend avoiding microwaving food in plastic containers, steering clear of plastic and vinyl products, and opting for phthalate-free cosmetics and personal care items.

30 Minutes of Cellphone Use a Week Linked to High Blood Pressure

Talking on a cell phone for 30 minutes or more a week could increase the risk of high blood pressure, according to a study. It was linked to a 12% increased risk of hypertension, a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke, compared with talking on a cell phone less than 30 minutes per week.

The study was conducted using data from over 200,000 participants without hypertension at baseline and spanned 12 years. Mobile phone usage was tracked over this period and participants were monitored for the development of high blood pressure. “The number of minutes that people talk on their cellphone appears to matter for heart health, with more minutes adding up to greater risk,” said Xianhui Qin, MD, a study author and professor.

No definite reason for the link was uncovered, but radiofrequency energy emitted by the cellphones was listed as a possible contributing factor. The authors suggest reducing time spent talking on cell phones each week while research in this area continues.

Are You Throwing Your Food Away Too Soon?
A study has found that up to half of consumers throw out perfectly good food. This appears to be due to the fact that many people use the date stamped on the food container to determine when to throw away food— regardless of whether the date is “sell by,” “best if used by,” or “use by.” In most cases, the date on food containers approximates when food quality might start to degrade (sell-by date excepted). But there’s no need to throw food out at this date unless it has gone bad. (More)

We are constantly inundated with advertisements boosting products that promise an increase in energy. The fact is, there are few supplements and vitamins that have science supporting their energy-enhancing claims.

Energy is produced in every one of our cells, in each of our organs, in our entire body. The energy-manufacturing factories in the cells are called mitochondria. These microscopic organelles spend their entire lives manufacturing energy. They receive the substrate, or fuel, from fats brought from the cell to them by certain amino acids such as L-carnitine, and then they undertake the crucial process of turning these free fatty acids into energy.

Special: Fight Fatigue With This Doctor's Secret Weapon

As we age, the mitochondria age with us and eventually die, making our energy production in various organs less effective. When this happens, we start accumulating toxins and waste that cannot be disposed of without energy.

To help our mitochondria live healthier and longer lives, we can add supplements to improve their function:

  • L-carnitine is an amino acid that transports fatty acids from the cell to the mitochondria (1,000 mg/day is a good dose).
  • Coenzyme Q10 helps the efficiency of the energy production cycle in the mitochondria (50-100 mg/day is a good dose). Note that many patients who are taking statins like Lipitor will experience a depletion of their CoQ10 levels, thus they will feel even more exhausted due to the side effect of the statins.

Half of Heart Deaths Preventable

Half of all heart disease deaths in the U.S. — the number one killer of both American men and women — could be prevented if Americans took the proper precautions against the top five modifiable risk factors.

Over 700,000 Americans die each year from heart disease, accounting for one in every five U.S. deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Special: Celebrated Cardiologist Details His Encounters With Death — and Offers Proof of an Afterlife

Emory University researchers looked at data from all 50 states and found that deaths from heart disease could be cut in these five nongenetic risk factors: elevated cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and smoking.

High blood pressure and smoking were tied to the highest proportion of preventable deaths.

In 2009 and 2010, the states with the lowest levels of risk factors were in the West, like Colorado, and those with the highest levels were in the South, including Kentucky, West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. About 80% of people reported exposure to at least one of the five risk factors.

Unexpectedly, there wasn’t a huge difference in cardiovascular-related deaths between best-off and worst-off states, the researchers reported in Annals of Internal Medicine.

Still, had it been possible to completely eliminate every case of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and smoking in the U.S., 54% of heart disease deaths among men and almost 50% of heart disease deaths among women could have been prevented, researchers noted.
