How to Slow Down Normal Muscle Loss with Aging
How to Slow Down Normal Muscle Loss with Aging
Muscle serves so many functions, besides just helping us look fit. For example, more muscle tissue means your body burns more calories at rest. But when we get into our 30s and 40s, especially if we don’t address it, muscle loss can begin. While this is considered normal aging, there are ways to address it.

Fiber for your joints

mail
Did you know your gut health could play a big role in managing rheumatoid arthritis (RA)?

A comprehensive review analyzed multiple studies on gut dysbiosis (an imbalance in gut bacteria) and its impact on inflammation in RA patients. Some bacteria, like Prevotella copri and Collinsella, can contribute to joint damage, while helpful bacteria like Lactobacillus casei help keep inflammation at bay.

What you eat truly matters. According to the study, fiber is a key component. It turns into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that strengthen your gut and help regulate your immune system. Interestingly, people who increased their fiber intake for 28 days saw a reduction in RA symptoms.

To promote the growth of good bacteria, aim for 25-38 grams of fiber daily. Anti-inflammatory diets, especially the Mediterranean diet, filled with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and healthy fats, can make a real difference. Plus, adding omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and probiotic-rich foods can further support your gut, helping you feel your best as you manage RA.

CARDIOVASCULAR WELLNESS

Hypertension or misdiagnosis?

mail
A new study from Johns Hopkins Medicine reveals that how you position your arm during blood pressure (BP) checks could be throwing off your results — and even lead to a misdiagnosis of hypertension.

In the trial involving 133 participants, researchers tested three common arm positions: resting on a desk, in your lap, and hanging by your side. The findings? An arm in your lap overestimated systolic BP by 3.9 mmHg, while letting your arm hang by your side bumped it up by almost 7 mmHg — a big difference that could be the tipping point between normal BP and stage 2 hypertension.

The takeaway? Proper arm support on a desk is key for accurate readings. This small adjustment can prevent overestimating your numbers and unnecessary worry about your heart health. So next time you’re getting your BP checked, remember: give your arm the support it deserves.

Protect your heart from everyday chemicals

mail
Eco-warriors, this one’s for you.

Did you know everyday products could be messing with your heart? A study led by the University of Cincinnati found that environmental phenols — chemicals like preservatives in packaged foods, parabens in shampoos, and BPA in plastics — can alter your heart's electrical activity.

In women, higher exposure was linked to delayed heart signals and longer QRS durations (contraction of the ventricles), particularly in those with a higher body mass. Men, you're not off the hook — triclocarban (TCC), an antimicrobial agent, was found to cause the heart’s electrical system to take too long to recharge, hinting at potential heart rhythm problems.

So what's the bottom line? Take charge of your heart health and be mindful of the products you use.

MENTAL HEALTH

Order in chaos

mail
We all crave order in chaos, which is why the popular game Tetris has won the hearts of millions. But who would have thought that this 40-year-old game could also help manage mental health?

A recent study tested the effectiveness of Tetris in reducing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among healthcare workers exposed to trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the trial, 164 participants were randomized into two groups: one played Tetris for 20 minutes, while the control group listened to the radio.

After five weeks, the Tetris group reported an average of one flashback per week, compared to five in the control group. Six months later, the Tetris group experienced half the PTSD symptoms of the control group.

Tetris is effective in reducing PTSD symptoms because it engages the brain in visuospatial tasks, which compete with the mental resources used for recalling traumatic memories. This then limits the vividness and frequency of flashbacks.

Researchers recommend playing Tetris as a simple, accessible tool to help manage trauma. Give the game a try today (best played on your phone).

GOOD THINKING

Today’s Brain Game:

How well do you know these
high–fiber foods?

The USDA recommends a daily intake of 25 grams of fiber for women and 38 grams for men. However, the average American adult consumes only 10 to 15 grams of fiber each day.

When increasing your fiber intake, it’s good to remember that not all healthy-looking foods are as high in fiber as you might think. Can you figure out which of these foods contain the most fiber?

Rank these foods from highest to lowest fiber content (hint: consider also the serving sizes):
  • 1 cup of cooked spinach
  • 1 cup of strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon of flaxseeds
  • 1 slice of whole wheat bread
  • ½ cup of cooked black beans

High–Fiber Plant–Based Cereal Bars

Indulge in these nutrient-packed, high-fiber plant-based cereal bars that are as delicious as they are wholesome. Packed with rolled oats, seeds, and naturally sweetened with dates, these bars offer a perfect balance of flavor and nutrition for a satisfying on-the-go snack or quick breakfast option.
mail
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup ground flaxseeds
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut (unsweetened, optional)
  • 1/3 cup almond butter (or any nut/seed butter)
  • 1/2 cup date paste (soak pitted dates in warm water, then blend into a paste)
  • 1/3 cup dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, apricots, or dates, chopped)
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds (or pumpkin seeds)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  • Pinch of sea salt
Instructions:
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking dish (8x8 inches) with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats, ground flaxseeds, chia seeds, shredded coconut (if using), dried fruit, and sunflower seeds. Mix well.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix together the almond butter, date paste, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until smooth and well combined.
  4. Pour the wet mixture over the dry ingredients and stir until everything is evenly coated and sticks together.
  5. Transfer the mixture to the lined baking dish and press it down firmly with a spatula or your hands to ensure the bars stick together.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown.
  7. Let the bars cool completely in the pan before lifting them out using the parchment paper. Cut into bars or squares.
  8. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or in the fridge for longer-lasting freshness.

THAT'S A WRAP

Thank you for reading
Goodness Today

Here’s the solution to today’s challenge. Did you get all the answers right?
  1. ½ cup of cooked black beans — about 7.5 grams of fiber. Highest in fiber, known for their nutritional value.
  2. 1 tablespoon of flaxseeds — about 3 grams of fiber. Flaxseeds are packed with fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.
  3. 1 cup of cooked spinach — about 4 grams of fiber. A decent source of fiber, especially considering its low calorie count.
  4. 1 cup of strawberries — about 3 grams of fiber. While they're high in antioxidants, they have the least fiber among the options.
  5. 1 slice of whole wheat bread — about 2 grams of fiber. A good source of fiber, but not as high as the others.
That’s all the goodness for today.

Today, I’m excited to share a special wisdom snippet with you from our Inner Circle portal.

Each month, I sit down with a celebrated wellness practitioner to discuss their respective field and expertise. The purpose of these conversations is to bring you the knowledge you need, when you need it - and to allow everyone in the community to ask questions in real time.

Recently, I met with Dr. Afrouz Demeri, who is considered to be one of the top hormone health experts in the world, and for good reason. After healing herself of a debilitating hormone-related illness in her twenties, she dedicated her entire career to understanding how this complex system within us works.

She is the former Director of Functional Medicine at the University of California Irvine's Department of Medicine, is a sought after national speaker on hormone and reproductive health, and is regularly featured in major publications and documentaries.

In our conversation, we explore what it truly takes to heal - way beyond simply medicine. We discuss the importance of reclaiming the language you use with yourself and why it might be time to shamelessly question what your doctors have told you about your health challenges.

We unpack what it truly means to be a yin human and how so many women have forgotten what this truly means, often leading to hormonal imbalances and other health problems.

Plus, we get into the art of living in the now, how to nurture compassion for yourself, and the very real benefit of rewiring harmful beliefs that no longer serve you.

If we all spoke to ourselves the way we spoke to our dearest friends, the world around us would be a much more beautiful place - not only for ourselves but for others as well.

What are the causes of the early-onset cancer epidemic?

Between 1990 and 2019, the number of people diagnosed with early-onset (ages 18 – 49) cancer increased by 79% globally. The number of deaths from early-onset cancer increased by 28% during that same period. That’s just in three short decades, and this number could increase as the kids of our world (following current toxic lifestyle choices) become young adults. It’s a horrifying stat, but tragically, the evidence points to just how accurate it is.
However, the causes of this massive spike in early cancer diagnosis can be decreased and even prevented with strategic action and lifestyle changes.

Hi Jimi,

Parkinson’s is more than just the tremors and the stiffness—it’s the silent battles that no one sees.

It’s the fear that creeps in late at night, wondering if you’ll ever feel the warmth of intimacy again, or if those moments are slipping away forever.

It’s the crushing weight of apathy, where even the things you once loved feel distant and meaningless.

It’s the anxiety that gnaws at you, keeping you awake as you worry about a future that seems more uncertain with each passing day.

These are the hidden struggles of Parkinson’s, the ones that don’t get talked about enough. The ones that take a toll on your mental health and your relationships, often leaving you feeling more alone than ever.

These non-motor symptoms can be just as devastating as the physical ones, if not more so. But you don’t have to face them on your own.

There’s a world of support waiting to embrace you with compassion and care. We understand the emotional challenges that come with Parkinson’s, and we’re here to help you regain control over your emotional and cognitive wellness.

>> It’s time to address the non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s <<

There’s hope, there’s support, and there’s a path forward that can help you reclaim your life. You deserve to feel understood, Jimi.

In times of deep difficulty and suffering, there is often an opportunity for spiritual growth and discovery. Rather than something to simply “overcome” on the path to spiritual realization, our pain can become an integral part of that journey.

Many who set out on a spiritual path encounter challenging aspects of themselves, including unresolved traumas that need attention and care. If not addressed with skill and compassion, these can lead to feeling “stuck” and experiencing further suffering.

In this FREE 3-part video series, Dr Gabor Maté and Hameed Ali will explore:
  • What it means to be awakened
  • How trauma can show up on the spiritual path
  • How suffering can be a portal into spiritual awakening
  • How to use trauma and suffering as a portal for going deeper into your true nature
  • How Hameed Ali’s teachings have been a primary influence on Dr Gabor Maté’s body of work
  • How spiritual work which is not trauma-informed can create further trauma

This Week's Podcast
Hi jim ,

In this week's episode of our 'Stories That Heal' podcast, we hear the story of how Leslie Ferris Yerger overcame her stage 4 de novo
breast cancer diagnosis.

Leslie Ferris Yerger was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in November 2017 after an "all clear" mammogram and ultrasound, experiencing firsthand the failings of our current breast cancer screening standards. She had no idea a lobular breast cancer tumor the size of an egg was hiding in her dense breast tissue and had spread to almost every bone in her body. She is still on her first line of treatment and is fueled every day to help other people get the screening they need so their cancer can be found earlier.

As Founder and CEO of the not-for-profit My Density Matters, Leslie is determined to empower women to find out their breast density, learn their options, and advocate for themselves to get the additional breast cancer screening they need so that her story doesn’t become their story. Leslie is also a TEDx speaker, author of Probably Benign, and a women’s advocate with a laser-focused mission.

Happy listening,
-Karla Mans Giroux and Liz Curran, Co-Directors of the Radical Remission Project

Dear Supporter,

ICAN is leading a fight that’s been ignored for too long. We're proud to announce that we’re prepared to take hospitals and doctors to court for trampling on parental rights and subjecting defenseless infants to a vaccine they don’t need and never consented to.

But we need your immediate help to fuel this critical legal battle protecting babies.
The Hepatitis B Vaccine: A Dangerous Experiment on Our Babies

This vaccine was originally developed for high-risk, sexually active adults – clearly, a far cry from a newborn baby. When those high-risk groups didn’t want it, the CDC, influenced by Big Pharma, added it to the routine childhood schedule in 1995.

Why?

Money.

Because billions of dollars were at stake.

To justify this, the CDC called for the vaccination of all newborns, making the case that this action would prevent future cases.

This is nothing but agency capture: an institution compromised by pharma funding, peddling an unnecessary vaccine to helpless infants.
Parents who recognize this do not consent to the vaccine being given to their newborn. But that is not stopping some hospitals and healthcare workers who inject the babies despite a lack of consent.

But that’s not the worst of it.

The hepatitis B vaccines licensed for newborns in the U.S.—Engerix-B and Recombivax HB—were given just 5 days and 4 days, respectively, of safety monitoring before being unleashed on our children.

Just 5 Days of Safety Monitoring. That’s It.

Think about it. Just five days to assess the safety of a vaccine injected within hours of birth! There has never been a comprehensive study proving this product’s long-term safety for infants, and we have already demanded the FDA revoke its license until there is. Until that happens, at the very least, informed consent must be given before a baby is injected – that crucial step is being ignored in hundreds if not thousands of cases.

Doctors and hospitals mustn’t play with the lives of newborns. ICAN’s lawsuits are the last line of defense for our children, and we need your support to fund this battle.

With you standing by our side, we can make medicine safe again and win this battle for parental rights, infant safety, and medical freedom.

Ever walk into a room and forget why you’re there?

We often blame these “duh” moments on getting older, but the truth is even more alarming.

Science now shows there are things you come into contact with every day that can steal your memory faster than aging alone.
Here are 4 surprising memory thieves to watch out for:

1. Vegetable Bins

Pesticides don’t just target bugs - they target brain cells!

According to Rutgers University research, even small doses of pesticide found on non-organic veggies can drain your memory fast.

2. Hidden Plastics

When you eat food or drink beverages packaged in plastic or synthetic materials…

Tiny particles known as “microplastics” can sneak into your body.

A study from the University of Rhode Island found that just a few weeks of microplastic exposure is enough to disrupt memory and brain health.

3. Breathing

A 2023 report published in The Lancet Medical Journal showed that long-term exposure to air pollution:

“Can lead to memory loss and significant cognitive decline.”

4. Cortisol Overload

Stress floods your brain with cortisol - a hormone meant for emergencies.

But when cortisol stays high for too long, it starts shrinking your hippocampus, making it harder to keep old memories and store new ones.

Over time, this leads to forgetfulness, mental fog, and poor cognitive health.

Hello Jimi,
If you feel extra tired and tempted to stay in bed more when it’s cold outside, there’s a reason for this.
Melatonin, the master sleep hormone, acts like a reset button for the body’s internal clock. During the darker days and longer nights of fall and winter, our melatonin production tends to increase. It can also rise earlier in the day, causing afternoon drowsiness and triggering sleep cycle imbalances. This makes it harder to fall asleep and wake up at the usual times.
But with the help of a few targeted solutions, you can regulate your sleep clock and avoid insomnia, daytime slumps, and other sleep-related problems.
Thank you to everyone who joined me for my recent webinar, during which I discussed seasonal cleansing. I shared why autumn is a crucial time for detoxification and winter renewal and how it differs from other seasonal cleanses, particularly the spring cleanse.

Have you ever felt the call to reconnect with your ancestral roots through herbalism?
That’s exactly what we explored in our latest episode of HerbMentor Radio with Lisa Fazio, an inspiring clinical herbalist and author of Della Medicina: The Tradition of Italian-American Folk Healing.
Lisa’s work draws deeply from her Italian immigrant family’s traditions, blending folk herbalism, spiritual practices, and ancestral wisdom.
In this episode, she shares stories that remind us how connecting with the plants of our ancestors can heal us in more ways than one.
In this episode, Lisa dives into:
  • The rich traditions of Italian folk herbalism and how they are still relevant today.
  • The role of common plants like garlic and St. John’s wort in Italian folk medicine and spiritual practices.
  • The connection between food, family, and herbal traditions that keeps these practices alive in modern times.
  • The importance of learning and honoring the wisdom of our own cultural heritage to find healing and connection in today’s world.
Lisa’s insights remind us that plants are not just tools for healing, but a way to connect to our heritage, our stories, and our community.
Tune in and discover a world of herbalism that is both timeless and profoundly personal.
