Hi Jimi,

The idea of boosting health naturally is a simple one.

But the terms can get confusing.

Take adaptogens, for example. What are they? What do they have to do with “adapting?”

And what is a superfood? How is it different from an adaptogen, or antioxidants for that matter?

Can one food or herb be all these things together?

Healthy foods and healing herbs come in many forms and could have all sorts of benefits. With so much overlapping, it’s hard to sort out what’s what, figure out what effects you’re really looking for, or determine which is best for you and your goals.

We humans love to categorize things! And while it’s tricky to keep track at first, it’s easier to make sense of them all than you might think.

ADAPTOGENS

Adaptogens are arguably the most potent for health-boosting in the bunch. These tend to be herbs or even powerful mushrooms. But that doesn’t mean adaptogens can’t also be defined or enjoyed as nutritious foods or spices, too.

Some of the most well-known adaptogens are reishi mushroom, ginseng, ashwagandha, rhodiola, tulsi/holy basil, and even turmeric, the common kitchen spice.

The bottom line: adaptogens help the body adapt to anything that could bring unhealthiness or disease.

This means these natural foods and remedies can modulate immune response, protect against stress, curb inflammation, fight free radicals, and generally boost health from all sorts of different angles, in a manner of speaking.

Much of the benefit can be correlated to highly unique phytochemicals found within these foods and remedies.

SUPERFOODS

These are a shade different, and are also strictly foods like their name suggests (almost always plant or fungus-based). And they’re “super” because they contain way more nutrients than the average food (super, indeed).

That said, something like kale can be called a superfood, but it also works like an adaptogen.

It’s full of a very high number of vitamins, minerals, and even unique antioxidants and phytochemicals! Compared to most other foods, it’s truly amazing for health, because it both supplies nutrition and protects.

And there’s another term some people might get confused by: antioxidant.

ANTIOXIDANTS

Antioxidants are not herbs or even foods. They’re actually nutrients, just like vitamins or minerals. So, some vitamins and minerals are antioxidants. And some adaptogens work their magic for health due to antioxidants, too!

What antioxidants do is complex. No doubt about it, they are incredible.

They prevent “oxidation” of cells and fight free radicals— basically, “rogue” cells that increase disease risk, accelerate aging, and can cause cancer.

When it comes to antioxidants? The more, the better.

The same goes for adaptogens and superfoods.

And when you look at them closely: they’re not so different.

Get as many of these foods, herbs, and nutrients in for the best and balanced natural wellness boost you could possibly get.

Stay healthy my friends. :)

To a healing future,
Rob

We’re pushing the peak of summer heat, which means refreshing beverages are an all day, every day requirement. This strawberry pink drink is for those times you want something chilled, creamy, and softly sweet. If you want to make a berry violet drink instead, use blackberries instead of strawberries and hibiscus tea instead of water.
Ingredients
Directions
In a small saucepan, heat the chopped strawberries, 2 tbsp. water and granulated sweetener over medium heat, 3-5 minutes, or until the strawberries begin to soften and break down. Set aside.
In a jar, mix together the remaining water and Collagen Quench Triple Berry Drink Mix. Shake up until foamy. Blend with stewed strawberries. Pour in the milk and blend again for a few seconds. Pour the mixture over ice and garnish with sliced strawberries.

Heart Attack Symptoms: Men vs Women

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Since the 1950s, well-intentioned articles and public service announcements to alert the public to the dangers of heart disease have focused on chest pain as the preeminent warning sign of a heart attack. This is because it is the most common symptom of a heart attack in men.

But for a long time, when a woman went to the emergency department complaining of chest pain and tests didn’t indicate a heart attack, her symptoms were brushed aside.

Possibly because women are less likely to have a major obstruction in their coronary arteries, their heart attack symptoms are often different from men’s.

Special: Heart Surgeon's Secret to Healthy Blood Pressure

While a woman may have chest pain as her most predominant symptom, she is just as likely to have these symptoms:

    • Shortness of breath. If you get short of breath doing activities that never used to cause this problem, like walking a few blocks for instance. This type of symptom can be mistaken for common aging
    • Fatigue, which causes you to become tired doing activities you used to be able to perform easily, or recurrent, unexplained tiredness
    • Indigestion, known also as an upset stomach, often is a painful or burning feeling in the upper abdomen that may include nausea; abdominal bloating; belching; vomiting; severe pain in the upper right abdomen; discomfort unrelated to eating; or uncontrollable burping
    • Chest pain or pressure, burning, squeezing, pain, or discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, increases in intensity, and is often relieved by rest or by taking nitroglycerin. Pain can radiate to the jaw, or occur in the back or neck
    • Sweating, nausea, or vomiting

    • A rapid or irregular pulse

  • Anxiety or confusion
Research now shows that even when the cause of symptoms appears to be noncardiac in nature, a woman is at twice the risk of suffering a cardiac event such as a heart attack within the next five to seven years.

Hi Jimi,

Anxiety and depression can both be devastating to quality of life and physical health.

However, the great news is that today there’s a wide range of therapies that research shows can help you in a big way, including those you can do yourself.

But, with all the different approaches to treatment out there, it can feel confusing and even overwhelming to understand each and HOW they can help you.

This overwhelm is a key reason that 2/3 of those who suffer anxiety and depression don’t seek any form of treatment.

Understanding the “tools” available to you is so important.

Make informed choices about which approach is best for YOU and truly take action against anxiety and depression...

Our good friend, Brian Vaszily, who’s been a leading natural health researcher and advocate for over 20 years, has included for you a free copy of The Top 20 Anxiety & Depression Therapies.

This report will provide you with a clear and concise understanding.

Some of these approaches may be familiar, such as Aromatherapy, Herbal Medicine, EFT, and Music Therapy.

Others may be new, such as EMDR, Somatic Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Pet Therapy.

Either way, you’ll get a concise understanding of what you do with each approach and how the research says it can best help you.

Knowledge is certainly power. And with this unique and important report you’ll gain awareness that could lead to very positive improvements in your life.

Brian’s research and advocacy have also compelled him to challenge today’s 22 top anti-aging and longevity doctors and researchers to each reveal their 3 MOST important health secrets in his upcoming 7-day Little-Known, Life-Changing Health Summit that starts on July 22. When you do get your free report, you’re also getting complete access to the 7-day Summit.

With the divorce rate in the US over 50% before the pandemic, we’re looking at a bleak picture now as couples are struggling to get along and see eye to eye. It’s tough right now and there isn’t a clear end in sight through this drama.

Here are the top 5 reasons marriages end:

  • Lack of Communication and Intimacy

This is the single biggest reason. You’re not talking and have lost the love language that helps take the edge off when times are tough. A major area of healing used to be sex and intimacy and now that’s not so great. There’s no real way to meet in the middle and discharge frustrations and urges.

  • Putting the Children Before your Spouse

All too often, the marriage becomes work and we find our parental duties running us into the ground. But what about my needs? What about theirs? This can easily lead to resentment and distress in a marriage.

  • Financial Stress

Too many bills and high cortisol can take the fun out of life. You fight and bicker. You don’t sleep well. You certainly don’t feel like making love and being intimate. This is a slippery slope to big fights and the blame game.

  • Immaturity and Selfishness

We’re all about “me first” in our culture and that’s being reflected in our marriages. Compromise and teamwork have taken a hit as we’re all about selfies, social media, and TV dramas. Marriages are work and often require some sacrifice. If there’s unwillingness from one side or both, then the deal is tough to keep.

  • Family Interference

It’s far too common to see the in-laws come in and ruin things. Bad boundaries can wreck a marriage and most of us come in with them. Learning to hold the line and say “no” is a powerful skill and one that’s missing in our culture. When mom steps through and insults your spouse, it gets ugly and can break a marriage.

It’s obviously a complex landscape and many of us have multiple areas that need work. Fortunately, there’s hope for us. Fixing intimacy can build a lot of positive energy and save a marriage. When’s the last time you truly made love? When did you let down your guard and remember why you loved this person so much? How can you fall back in love?

I’ll be teaching a very special course on TANTRA next week and it is the #1 saver of marriages in my toolbelt. I’ve saved so many couples from blowing it all up over the years simply by teaching them how to rekindle their intimacy.

If your marriage needs some help or simply needs a spark to reignite the passion, I highly recommend taking this course. Click here for more information.

Marriage is work but doesn’t have to feel heavy. You’ve come this far, don’t blow it all now. Find the love, the passion, and the energy again.

>>> Check out the course <<<

Yours in service,

Dr Pedram Shojai

PS- I’ll be teaching courses on better boundaries later in the Urban Monk Academy too. Keep learning and bettering yourself!

Hi Jimi, Part 1 of 2

We've likely all had a sunburn at some point.

It's a pretty clear indication of an overexposure to UV radiation.

But was the mistake purely a lack of topical sunscreen? Or could there be significance to your internal UV defense?

I'm convinced the nutritional side of sun protection is profoundly underestimated.

When it is acknowledged in conventional medicine at all, it's usually an after-thought as compared to the importance of what you rub on your skin.

Topical sunscreen will protect way more, no doubt - but at what cost?

**This email is not a recommendation to avoid topical sun protection.

If we constantly covered plants with a sun-blocking wax because too much sun dries them up, they'd be in trouble...the question is, are we missing anything by blocking the sun entirely?

There's no question people are born with varying degrees of genetic susceptibility to UV. But epigenetics suggests that, for most of us, many of our genes are not a life-sentence.

Epigenetics: the study of how external influences can alter gene expression, rather than requiring a modification to the genetic code itself.

Diet is one of the strongest modifiers of an environment to induce modified gene expression.

Because of the skyrocketing rates of skin cancers, it seems logical as to why there would be so much fear of the sun in our culture.

But remember, we did evolve for all of time, living under the sun, without any chemical sunscreens being slathered on the skin.

With that in mind, here are what I think are the top 10 anti-sunburn nutrition superheroes! Links to all the peer-reviewed scientific literature. :)

Part 2 of 2

1. What: ASTAXANTHIN (algae, krill, salmon)
Study: The Protective Role of Astaxanthin for UV-Induced Skin Deterioration in Healthy People—A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial

More: This is a carotenoid I have been taking for years, and I would experiment with large doses before going out in the direct sun for hours. And whenever I had a solid dose, I would not burn. *These are my personal experiences and not medical advice.

Astaxanthin also balances energy and stamina, boosts immunity, and pretty noticeably speeds recovery time from physical activity. There's also a large body of research for protecting eyesight and macular degeneration. I find it so interesting the compounds that are the richest colors are the things best for the eyes.

2. What: BETA-CAROTNE (Leafy greens like Kale and Spinach)
Study: The Role of Phytonutrients in Skin Health

More: Beta-carotene (precursor to Vitamin A) is a "photoprotective agent" which means it suppresses and prevents damage done by UV exposure.

3. What: MACA ROOT
Study: Hypocotyls of Lepidium Meyenii (Maca), a Plant of the Peruvian Highlands, Prevent Ultraviolet A-, B-, and C-induced Skin Damage in Rats

Quote from study authors: "Maca extracts protect the skin of rats against UV irradiations and can be suggested as an alternative means of solar protection."

4. What: SULFORAPHANE (in broccoli and broccoli sprouts)
Study: Sulforaphane mobilizes cellular defenses that protect skin against damage by UV radiation

More: Sulforaphane is becoming a popular 'new kid' on the nutritional supplement block. The more I learn about the compound the more I am really stoked about its potential in nutritional health. It is found up to 10X more in raw broccoli as compared to cooked.

Quote: "(isothiocyanate sulforaphane) reduces sensitivity to erythema, which is the superficial reddening of the skin, the first sign of sunburn."

5. What: LYCOPENE (tomato and watermelon)
Study: Tomatoes protect against development of UV-induced keratinocyte carcinoma via metabolomic alterations

Study: β-Carotene and other carotenoids in protection from sunlight

More: A rich carotenoid that gives tomatoes their red color. But, there's actually more lycopene in watermelons! Lycopene not only prevents UV damage, it helps repair it.

Quote: "an optimal supply of antioxidant micronutrients in the skin increases basal dermal defense against UV irradiation, supports longer-term protection, and contributes to maintenance of skin health."

6. What: VITAMIN C (Blueberries/Strawberry/Guava/Citrus)
Study: Red Raspberry Extract Protects the Skin against UVB-Induced Damage with Antioxidative and Anti-inflammatory Properties

More: Studies show that long-term intake of optimal dosage of Vitamin C can reduce the potential for sunburn. There was also a study that looked at senior citizens in Southwest US, and found the more citrus they ate, the lower chance of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin.

7. What: POMEGRANATES (anthocyanins and tannins)
Study: Protective effect of pomegranate derived products on UVB-mediated damage in human reconstituted skin

More: Evidence of protection from both UVA and UVB

8. What: MUSHROOMS
Study: Mushroom extract inhibits ultraviolet B-induced cellular senescence in human keratinocytes

Quote: "Results clearly showed that the mushroom extract (No. 28) suppressed the ultraviolet B irradiation-induced cellular senescence in HaCaT cells" (Senescence: deterioration of a cell)

More: There are at least 29 bioactive components in mushrooms shown to protect from UVB-induced cellular deterioration (as well as boost the heck out of your immune system!)

9. What: EGCG (green tea) EGCG is an "epicatechin", a type of super potent antioxidant
Study: Green tea catechin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG): mechanisms, perspectives and clinical applications.

Quote: "Various animal studies have revealed that treatment with EGCG inhibits tumor incidence and multiplicity in different organ sites such as skin (UV radiation and chemically induced)..."

Quote 2: "EGCG, in a transgenic mice model for skin cancer, has exhibited a preventive effect and/or improvement of the situation"

Quote 3: "EGCG has been shown to possess chemopreventive effects against broad spectrum of carcinogens by inhibiting...UV-induced skin carcinogenesis in the animal model"

10. What: FLAXSEED OIL
Study: Photoprotective Effect of Flax Seed Oil (Linum Usitatissimum L.) Against Ultraviolet C-induced Apoptosis and Oxidative Stress in Rats

More: Flaxseed for skin also improves elasticity, firmness, tone, complexion, etc.

**Again these foods and compounds are not meant to be a replacement for a clean topical skin sunscreen – ideally from a responsible, organic brand. The information is meant to support your understanding of what a healthy body is capable of when provided with optimal nutrition.

Hi :)

Getting started with natural remedies can be so intimidating at first. But there’s no need to spend a small fortune and feel overwhelmed with confusion!

There is an easier way.

I know you want to use more natural methods to heal...

You read articles about them....

surf Pinterest for new ways to use them....

and even toy with the idea of building your own natural medicine chest.

It all seems so fascinating and appealing!

You love the idea of using natural remedies in your home.

But…

Something is always holding you back from actually diving in.

Maybe you don't want to waste money on remedies that won't work for you.

Or maybe you’re so confused by all the conflicting information online that you have no idea what will give you the results you need and what might actually cause harm.

Perhaps it’s both.

Or maybe it's because your doctor told you that there is nothing you can do to help yourself and your only hope is a prescription...

Perhaps the whole thing feels so huge, so complicated, and so overwhelming that you don’t even know where to begin.

So, you don’t.

And you feel a little guilty about it from time to time.

My friend, getting started with natural remedies doesn’t have to cost you a fortune or leave you swimming in doubt and uncertainty.

You can do this... and I want to help show you the way.

I've created a free, no-strings-attached 4-part video series called, "Natural Healing Made Simple" that you can access here.

No waiting - you'll receive access to video one right away.

And you'll start learning a system of natural medicine that makes it all clear and easy to follow.

=>Click here to get access to the 4-part video series, and you will understand how simple natural healing can be!

YOU CAN’T HUSTLE YOUR WAY TO HEALTH.

How we show up in one area of life, is how we show up in all.

Hey Jim,

Tonight I was laying on my couch doing breath work when the monsoons rolled in.

I live in Santa Fe NM and the rain is magnificent here.

We are at 7000ft of high desert and just about this time of year we are peaking at 100 degree hot summer days.

The energy is hot and masculine. It’s YANG.

And then, the rains come, bringing the cooling wet waters that ground the energy and all regains balance.

Tonight as the water started to release from the sky, I could feel the energy of letting go...the great surrender.

The healing that is involved in the art of allowing and Trust.

I got a Divine download loud and clear telling me that the depth and amount that we are willing to receive love, health and abundance is directly connected to our sense of worthiness.

That control, fear and contraction have counterproductive effects.

The way to healing is softening.

Most of my clients are high achieving bad ass women. They create. They hustle. They don’t sit around to wait to see if something will happen, they create it.

But here’s the thing….how you show up in one area of your life, is how you show up in all.

So what do you think happens when that hustle/grind mentality finally results in chronic symptoms such as insomnia, gas/bloating, anxiety, fatigue, low thyroid, or autoimmune disease?

They meet this new “problem” with the same level intensity that they approached every other problem before it.

They are on a mission to fix themselves.

They are hustling!

But you cannot create something different with the same energy (or resonance) that got you there in the first place!

Like creates like.

This is why so many of my clients have tried every protocol known to man and still don’t feel like much headway has been made.

Because...guess what?

They’re still their old Selves and approaching the problem the same way.

So much of healing comes from ALIGNING yourself to that which you desire.

It seems simple….but for a woman that has spent her life creating results from her masculine energy of doing and controlling….it’s actually one of the hardest (yet most profound) things she can do.

Aligning means regaining integrity with yourself so that you deeply Trust and are able to let go.

It’s allowing yourself to receive that which you want...which actually means you need to feel worthy of it.

It means facing some hard facts around where you have been lacking self worth or boundaries.

In order to heal, you must always address the Yin (the inner work) and the Yang (the mechanisms).

It's a dance and a harmony of energy.

You will never get the results that you want without highly investing and transforming the resonance/state of being that created the symptoms.

Healing is a spiritual journey and the purpose of the symptoms are to provide checks and balances about what IS and IS NOT working in your life.

They’re not here just to create problems for you!

Osteoporosis: What You Should Know
Fosamax and other bisphosphonates (Actonel and Boniva) are used commonly used to treat the bone weakening disease known as osteoporosis.
These drugs do increase bone mass. However, they are also associated with numerous side effects including upper gastrointestinal pain and erosion, esophagitis, ulcers, skin rash, diffuse bone pain, and osteonecrosis (bone death) of the jaw. Previously, bisphosphonates had been used in laundry soaps, fertilizer, and anti-corrosives for the textile and oil industries.
Merck’s clinical trial showed that as many as 33 percent of the participants reported blurred vision. Even more troubling, another study quoted on April 4, 2006, by United Press International, found more than 2,400 patients who were taking the injected form of bisphosphonates had suffered bone damage to their jaws since 2001.
In addition to the 2,400 patients who were taking the injected form, the study found 120 patients taking the oral form of the drug who had been stricken with such incapacitating bone, joint, or muscle pain that some became bedridden and others required walkers, crutches or wheelchairs.

"We've uncovered about 1,000 patients (with jaw necrosis) in the past six to nine months alone, so the magnitude of the problem is just starting to be recognized,"
-Kenneth Hargreaves, of the University of Texas, reported to the Los Angeles Times.
And we need to consider that the FDA estimates that only 10 percent of adverse drug events are ever reported. Rats given high doses developed thyroid and adrenal tumors. Fosamax also causes deficiencies of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D, all essential for the bone-building process.
Before starting on potentially dangerous drug therapy at the first sign of bone loss, patients need to be educated on the role nutrition plays in ensuring optimal bone health. There are at least 18 key bone-building nutrients essential for optimal bone health. Vitamins D, E, C, B12, K, folic acid, and minerals including boron, calcium, magnesium, copper, and zinc are needed for proper bone production and restoration. All of these nutrients have been shown to reduce and in some cases restore optimal bone mass.
I think patients would be better served by using prevention and optimal nutrition instead of taking a bone-eating prescription.

The Four Different Kinds of Rest

From the very beginning of our consciousness, rest is a catch-all palliative for any number of maladies.

Cranky? Take a nap. Can’t think straight? Close your eyes. Have a headache? Have a lie down.

And there’s plenty to be said for that simple advice – rest should be restorative and a lot of our frustrations, modern and ancient, can be more easily worked through in a state of rest.

After all, we know now that chronic stress, too little sleep, non-restful sleep, undernourishment, and unresolved trauma can all keep us rooted in a sympathetic and reactive state.

What we want to do is access a parasympathetic state of resting and digesting, whereby our microbiomes can digest and absorb properly. That keeps the majority of our chemical and hormonal secretions intact, and allows the mechanisms that keep our shoulders scrunched up to our ears to relax and let us be.

The problem is that there are several different kinds of resting, and they’re not necessarily interchangeable.

Sometimes, you really do need one kind over the other, and without knowing what you need when…

Well, you’re liable to “waste” time resting in a way that you didn’t need to begin with. And on top of that, you won’t have gotten the kind of rest you really need!

Let’s talk about the different kinds of rest you can experience, and when they might be applicable to your life…

Silence

Sometimes, the overwhelming exhaustion we’re feeling can lead to sensitivity. Specifically, sensory overload.

Most of us don’t live alone in cottages, our lives punctuated by the sounds of trickling streams and early morning bird calls.

We likely live with friends, or relations, or partners and children. And many of us were taught to believe we just need to tune out the noise of those living around us, that the onus is on the offended to deal with the offenses.

Let’s assume that’s true.

If you’re feeling particularly activated by noises not your own – loud TVs, constant chattering, various media competing for volume, running and stomping sounds – a nap might not do you any good.

Consider, instead, either:

  1. Requesting silence or space, if able
  2. Leaving the overwhelming situation and carving out silent space for yourself
  3. Wearing noise canceling headphones when possible while playing ambient/nature sounds!

Stillness

When your shoulders and neck are in pain, your legs cramp up, or your back hurts, it’s possible that you just… haven’t been still in a long time. You may think that napping, sleeping, or having a lie-down counts as stillness.

But that’s not necessarily the case. More often than not, simply being idle isn’t a commitment to stillness. Fidgeting, rearranging, and tensing can still happen during idleness.
Instead – and even if you don’t believe this works for you – try meditating. Don’t fuss over whether or not you can reach a blank, zen mental state. That will come with practice.

Simply sit on your tailbone with your legs crossed in front of you, scan the body mentally, and concentrate on reducing each body part to stillness.

Sleep

Not to be discounted, you really do just need a good, quality sleep sometimes (all times, really, but in terms of resting…)

A no-phone, no-TV kind of sleep. No alcohol, no sleeping pills. No light, no noise. Just you and your breath and the darkness and waking when your body wants to with no alarm.

That isn’t possible in everyone’s lives – which is a shame, since we all need that chance to check out and regenerate. If it feels too tricky to arrange a sleep-with-abandon kind of sleep, work out a trade off with the people in your life to prioritize it when you need it!

You’ll know if this is the kind of rest you need when you’re barely keeping your eyes open, your bones feel heavy, and you can’t concentrate at all. Your body will tell you it needs to sleep – you just have to listen.

Self-care

Rest? Self-care? Bubble baths?

Maybe! Self-care is about getting out of your own way. If that means you’ve been grinding all the time, raising a family, raising yourself, cleaning the kitchen more often than it seems like is possible – sure, a bubble bath sounds like the perfect rest for you.

But you can also be exhausted from trying to keep up with your finances, and it feels like no matter what you do, you’ve missed a bill or accrued a late fee here or aren’t able to meet your savings goal this month.

Self-care can mean that you sit yourself down and draw up a comprehensive budget while auditing your credit card bill for the last two months to see where you’re falling short.

It can be a radical and stark look at yourself and your behavior and how it might be hindering your progress. It can be a look at how you’re making yourself tired, and what you can do to energize yourself instead.

The next time you feel rundown, sit with that feeling and be careful about what you prescribe yourself – make sure the medicine matches the malady!
