Hi Jimi,

The mind-body approach to healing has been around for thousands of years.

Historical records even go as far back as Hippocrates in the 4th century BC!

But modern (Western) medicine has only started catching up by the late 20th century.

So for this week’s vodcast, we are taking on a different approach when looking at one of the most common causes of thyroid dysfunction—Hashimoto’s disease.
And to help us out, we invited mind-body health expert Dr. Natasha Fallahi, who specialises in an intuitive approach to care for sensitive people.
In this episode, we talked about:

  • The impact of your state of mind when battling autoimmune conditions, especially Hashimoto’s
  • The 2 types of trauma experiences and how these can manifest in your body
  • Why people with Hashimoto’s can also be the sensitive types (and how to better manage your emotions)
  • What Hashimoto’s and other autoimmune disorders look like from an energy perspective
  • Simple yet powerful things you can do today to start healing your mind & emotions, including easy vagus nerve stimulation exercises
  • The real symptoms of Hashimoto’s you should watch out for (especially if you’re being treated for another thyroid disease today)
  • Full list of tests you should get to properly diagnose Hashimoto’s
And so much more!

This approach to medicine is something Matt and I are super interested in—with my being a sensitive person and with Matt reading up on this topic for years. (You’ll also hear about Matt’s story about his anxiety on planes!)

We loved having Dr. Natasha on board, as we truly believe that the state of your mind can impact how your body heals.

Find out how mind-body medicine works in Episode 16 of The Goodness Lover Vodcast here.

To your health,

Sarah Otto

What Does Everyone Mean When They Say "Water Weight"?

It’s one of those expressions commonly misapplied as a balm to soothe frustrated dieters, sodium lovers, exercise fanatics, or health gurus.

But when it comes down to defining it, most people are at something of a loss.

Is it good? Is it bad? Aren’t we basically made of water – why wouldn’t we have water weight? Do you lose it first when you’re trying to lose weight, or last?

We’re going to clear things up.

We’ll go through what water weight is, how one comes to retain it in the first place, the effects of holding it, and how to drain it!

Water Weight: Edema

The scientific term for water weight is edema, meaning fluid retention. The body clings to water around body tissues (between your organs and your skin) and in circulation, specifically in the extremities – the arms, hands, feet, ankles, and legs.
image

The water that’s clinging to your tissues is water that’s meant to be flushed through the kidneys along with toxins, waste, and excess body salts, but for a variety of possibilities, it’s just not going.

Our bodies are 50-60% water. Anything over that is unnecessary, and like most abnormalities in the body, usually a sign that something else is going wrong.

Let’s outline some of the reasons your body retains water weight…

Causes of Water Retention

When you’re trying to lose weight, you’ll often hear fitness experts and trainers tell you not to worry if you’re gaining weight – it’s just water weight…

What they mean is that micro tears in the muscles induce the body to hold more water for healing, as well as for inflammation soothing purposes… especially if you’ve been inactive for a while.

Beyond that, there are quite a few other reasons, such as:

  • High Carb: Eating a diet high in carbohydrates (without adequate hydration) can be a cause for water retention. This is because whenever we don’t use energy right away, we store it as glycogen in our lean muscle mass… but each gram of glycogen stored keeps three grams of water with it.

  • High Sodium: Your body is always trying to maintain a balance between salt and water. You know the feeling – you eat a bunch of peanuts at the bar and all of a sudden you’re thirsty. When your diet contains too much sodium, your body holds onto water to keep the balance intact.

  • Inactivity: Frequent traveling or sitting at a desk all day can actually cause your body to pool water, especially in your extremities. When you don’t move enough, circulation slows down and water builds up around body tissue.

  • Menstrual Cycle: Because hormone quantities and types shift before menstrual cycles, so do our water retention habits. Not to mention, we tend to crave salty foods and carbs during that time!

  • Low on Magnesium or B-6: When you’re low on these vitamins which support the kidneys, they have to work extra hard to flush your toxins, waste, and water, which means they aren’t doing it as often.

  • Dehydration: Funny, we know. But when you’re dehydrated, your body starts to panic about when it’s going to get water again. It’s a survival instinct – hold onto the water you’ve got in case you won’t get anymore for a while!
image

The Effects of Water Weight and What to Do

This is sort of a no-brainer… but to reverse the effects, correct the issues above!

When you’re retaining too much water, you’ll weigh more, feel bloated, swollen, and generally uncomfortable – especially around the extremities and stomach. It’s typically not considered dangerous, unless you’re experiencing those symptoms to an extreme degree. If that’s the case, definitely get in touch with your primary care physician!

Otherwise…

Try to drink a lot of water if you’re eating a lot of carbs, or cut down so you’re not eating so many!

Limit your salt intake as much as possible – really, we’re not supposed to have more than about a teaspoon of salt a day. Most of the salt we eat comes from processed foods, not regular table salt. Avoid them, mostly the high-sodium ones, as often as you can!

Make sure to get up and walk around once an hour to keep your blood flowing.

Stay hydrated right before your menstrual cycle!

Take supplements of magnesium and B-6 – you need them for way more than just getting rid of water weight, so it’s a good idea in general!

And remember…

None of us are drinking as much water as we’re supposed to.

If you can’t make it to a gallon a day, try to at least get to two liters!

All of the internal issues that can cause you to retain water are also issues that cause low energy, including dehydration.

So much goes on at the molecular level that we’re unaware of. Most of us don’t make an effort to be healthier until something goes wrong in a big way. But that’s because Western medicine isn’t about prevention, it’s about solving problems.

But you see…

That’s a problem.

Click here to sign up to watch the docu-series we’re about to drop about what’s really causing your exhaustion and draining the energy out of your life. You might be surprised at how often those symptoms coincide with areas of your life…

Vinegar Reduces Blood Pressure

By Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Mike Roizen, MDs

Thirty-two thousand baby boomers are members of USA Triathlon, the national governing body for competitive triathletes; tens of thousands more cycle, swim, and jog regularly. An astounding 61 percent say they feel nine years younger than they really are.

All that get-up-and-go means the older generation has lots of energy, which of course translates into more active intimate relations.

In fact, today more than 70 percent of men and 50 percent of women in their 60s report that they're still sexually active. A lot of kiss and vinegar, you might say!

That doesn't surprise us, because it turns out that vinegar — whether apple cider, balsamic, or rice wine — is a smart part of a healthy lifestyle.

Special: Heart Surgeon's Secret to Healthy Blood Pressure

Vinegar helps reduce blood pressure, improves your blood sugar response (reducing the effects of diabetes) and helps prevent heart disease. It has antibacterial properties and contains polyphenols and acetic acid.

The latter inhibits your body's ability to store fat while boosting its ability to burn it! All that helps protect you against sexual dysfunction.

Just one word of caution: Good health and great romance call for smart protection against sexually transmitted diseases such as herpes, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. And baby boomers seem to be overlooking that!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are 20 million new sexually transmitted infections annually, but only half are among young people.

So what's the solution? Stay energetic and engaged, for sure, but start relying on disease-protecting condoms for safety. With good-for-you condiments and condoms, you can go, go, go!

In these last months, your life may have been turned upside down in some tough ways. Health concerns, finances, boatloads of uncertainty, difficult emotions…

But every day, we still have the chance to become one percent better.

No matter where you are or what you’ve gone through, challenging situations always present an opportunity to elevate your health and life. And I want to invite you to an event that will help you learn how to take actionable steps to do just that.

>>> Tap here for a sneak peek at The Immune Resiliency Summit

The Immune Resiliency Summit will teach you how to …

  • Support your immunity
  • Address stress and fear in powerful, effective, and healthy ways
  • Redefine how you create resiliency (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) so that you can create the building blocks for a BETTER normal.
I’ll be there as an expert, speaking on the Germ Theory and why the fundamental basis of what we’ve been told about illness isn’t right. We’re led to believe that bugs and bacteria themselves are at the root of our health problems and all we need to do to get healthy is kill them. Really, they’re not the problem at all. Instead, learn to turn your body’s terrain into a place that these germs (which are always going to be there!) can’t thrive, and discover optimal health and wellness.

If you’ve asked yourself HOW do I make changes in the face of the challenges the global crisis has created? Start here, today, with this event.

Maximum Blessings,
Dr. Jay Davidson

PS: When you watch the welcome video and register, you’ll get access to several bonus presentations immediately. Tap here to secure your seat for this FREE event, The Immune Resiliency Summit. I can’t wait to see you there!

Dr. Gary Small, M.D., writes:

Believe it or not, when you’re relaxed you digest food better, leading to better portion control. And portion control helps people avoid obesity, which impairs cognition and shortens life expectancy.

When obese people lose weight, they also experience significant memory improvements that last for years.

Consuming omega-3 fats from fish and nuts fights brain inflammation, and fruits and vegetables diminish age-related oxidative stress.

Special: Over 50? Serious Brain Nutrition Combats Scary Mental Decline

It’s important to avoid chips, doughnuts, and cookies, or at least practice rigorous portion control when you do eat them. Refined sugars and processed foods increase the risk for diabetes, which in turn doubles our risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

In moderation, alcohol is associated with better brain health. It may be that a glass of wine at dinner lowers stress, which protects the brain.

In addition, resveratrol, an organic compound that has been extracted from red wine, has shown anti-aging effects in lab studies.

Caffeine in moderation also protects the brain, as do many spices.

My research team recently finished testing whether a bioavailable form of the spice curcumin (from turmeric) staves off memory loss. People who live in India consume a lot of curcumin-rich curry, and have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. And people who eat spicy Indian food on a regular basis perform better on memory tests.

Our study results indicate that taking a bioavailable form of curcumin can improve mild age-related cognitive issues.

Dr. Gary Small, M.D., author of The Mind Health Report newsletter, is a professor of psychiatry and aging, and director of the UCLA Longevity Center. One of the nation’s top brain health experts, he frequently appears on The Today Show, Good Morning America, and The Dr. Oz Show. He is co-author with wife Gigi Vorgan of many bestsellers, including The Memory Bible and 2 Weeks to a Younger Brain.

COVID Deep Dive: Understanding Hydroxychloroquine, Peptides, and Ozone Therapy with Dr. Matthew Cook
When it comes to overcoming COVID-19, we’re all trying to sort through the influx of daily information and understand the best options for prevention and treatment as best we can. New research is emerging every day, which includes alternative therapies that have been used for other difficult diseases, that will allow us to build up our toolbox against the pandemic.

This week on The Broken Brain Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Matthew Cook about his experience treating patients with COVID-19, how he’s keeping himself healthy during this time, and innovative therapies that are showing some promising results.

Dr. Cook is a board-certified anesthesiologist and the founder of BioReset Medical, located in Silicon Valley. He graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of California San Francisco. He has been practicing medicine for over 20 years, focusing the last 14 years on Functional and Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Cook has extensive experience using cutting-edge treatment protocols that support and modulate the immune system and help one’s own body to prevent and combat viral illness.

Relative to the current pandemic, he has spent the past months distilling the latest research, talking with experts around the world, and integrating his vast clinical experience to provide up-to-date information to the public and medical practitioners.

Dhru and Dr. Cook dive into the widely-debated topic of hydroxychloroquine to discuss Dr. Cook’s own experience using it to treat patients in the beginning of the pandemic. He was not impressed with the results and has moved onto other treatment options, such as peptide injections and ozone therapy, which he explains in greater detail throughout this episode. He also explains some of the risks we now know are associated with hydroxychloroquine.

One of the most common questions we hear about COVID-19 is why certain people get it and others don’t. Dr. Cook shares some insights into why that could be, what we just don’t know yet, and what we do know about staying resilient and healthy in general.

Dr. Cook has an enormous amount of experience taking care of patients with Lyme, PTSD, dysautonomia, and other extremely difficult health issues. He shares some interesting similarities between COVID-19 and some of the diseases he’s treated in the past, as well as how COVID-19 can hide out in the brain and why we need to pay attention to the neurological symptoms that come with that when it comes to long-term healing.

Another alternative therapy Dhru and Dr. Cook explore is ketamine therapy and how he’s successfully used it for drug-resistant depression and PTSD. He has a very hopeful message in using synergistic approaches for people who are struggling, whether it’s with COVID or another major health concern. I hope you’ll tune in.

Wishing you health and happiness,
Mark Hyman
