Calcified Plaque Hikes Heart Risk for Young

Coronary calcified plaque is the type of hardened fatty deposits that line the heart’s arteries and are a hallmark of atherosclerosis, the disease process that sets the stage for a heart attack.

Young adults with any amount of coronary calcified plaque in their arteries are already at risk of a heart attack, a new study finds.

Researchers from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, performed CT scans on more than 3,000 participants in their 30s and 40s. They had assumed it would be normal to find a small amount of calcified plaque in the participants’ arteries, but they were surprised to find that even a little of it boosted the chance of a heart attack fivefold over the next 12 years.

The presence of any coronary artery calcification, even the lowest score, was associated with between a 2.6 and tenfold increase in clinical events over the next 12.5 years.

When it came to those with high CAC scores (100 or above), the incidence of death was 22%, they said.

While this study does not mean that people in this age group should get a routine CT test to check for calcium, it does indicate that those with risk factors for heart disease should consider it.

Such risk factors include high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and a history of smoking.

What if for the child with T1D that is just
the canary in the coal mine?



It is well known that if a person has one autoimmune disease, they most likely have more than one - just enough of the organ hasn't been destroyed or it could be a 'silent' autoimmune process... or it could be swept under the rug as "unrelated."

Well, the GAD65 antibody that is a weak link in some people's autoimmune chain can also contribute to stuff like epilepsy, stiff-person syndrome, or cerebellar ataxia (think possibly very poor balance for a kid) or in extreme cases could be part of a reason why a person has encephalitis.

The insulin a child takes can help with keeping their blood sugar stable, but won't address the autoimmunity in the first place or really address any brain-based issues as well, other than helping balance blood sugar.

Escalated Density Training


One of my favorite ways to help a person with their exercise is called EDS or Escalated Density Training made popular by coach Charles Staley.

Basically pick two exercises and alternate doing them. Say you pick lunges and pushups.

Start a timer and do 10 lunges (per leg), then 10 pushups, then 9 lunges, then 9 pushups, then 8 lunges, and so on until you are doing 1 rep of each exercise.

Then record your time.

The goal is to be able to do the same workout in a shorter time frame to increase how intense you have to exercise without adding in more weight or more reps.

Intensity is key for how well exercise benefits the brain, but it needs to be at an intensity each person can handle and will vary based on fitness levels.​

How To Improve Your Brain/Body Balance And
Improve Your Health While You’re At It!​

Movement is something that can’t be replicated with a drug or supplement. It is literally life for the brain and necessary for development. This can actually be one of the easiest windows to see how the brain is or isn’t working. When working with someone that has the proper training and experience, how someone does or doesn’t control movements can give a huge clue as to what parts of the brain are being affected. Different forms of motion can be broken down into a few categories like:

  • tremors (resting, termination, intention)
  • tics, chorea, choreiform movements
  • slow or trouble starting movements
  • how a person or child walks
  • how eyes move and work
  • fine motor control and coordination
  • gross motor skills
  • spastic muscles as seen in a stroke
  • flaccid paralysis as seen in damage outside the central nervous system
  • doing two things at once
  • endurance and strength that is the same on both sides
  • posture
Some of the earliest ways to look for an increased risk of Autism developing is actually looking at how a child moves since by the time a person looks at speech, behavior, and social interaction, the process has been occurring for a while at that point.

Also, looking at how a person moves, or their eyes move can be early signs of something bad brewing like cerebellum degenerating, Alzheimer’s, or Parkinson’s. The way eyes move is truly a window into how different parts of the brain are working together to do what we might consider something simple like look at a target, follow a target, and coordinate touching what we are looking at (especially if both the person and the target is moving).

As you can see there is a lot to consider. Some of the benefits of making sure a person is active and exercises can help with not only feeling good but developing and maintaining parts of the brain that have a tendency to break down later in life as well as keep the mind sharp by helping increase learning and memory. Also, when a group of muscles move there is not only an increase in blood flow to the muscles being used, but also to the parts of the brain that coordinate the muscles themselves.

Different types of exercise are good and usually a person needs to be breathing hard, coordinating large muscles groups, working towards and reaching a goal, and continually improving. On the flip side of the coin, sometimes people need to improve their meditation and relaxation. It isn’t always about pushing to the limits every single day. Typically a depressed person does better with exercise and an anxious person does better with meditation.

Pay close attention to where Ray Archuletta shows animated imaging from NASA of the atmosphere from January to July of every year in the Northern hemisphere.

Today, I just wanted to share a powerful story to support you. Please feel free to share this with those you love and post it on your social media. ~ Dr. Tom

There was a woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. As she was getting her things "in order," she contacted her pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes.

She told him which songs she wanted sung at her service, what scriptures she would like to be read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. She also requested to be buried with her favorite Bible.

Everything was in order, and the pastor was preparing to leave when the woman suddenly remembered something very important to her.

"There's one more thing," she said excitedly.

"What's that?" came the pastor's reply.

"This is very important," the woman continued, "I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand."

The pastor stood, looking at the woman, not knowing quite what to say.

"That surprises you, doesn't it?" the woman asked.

"Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request," said the pastor.

The woman explained, "In all my years of attending church socials and potluck dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, ‘Keep your Fork.’ It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming… like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance! So, I just want people to see me there in my casket - with a fork in my hand - and I want them to wonder ‘What's with the fork?’ And I want you to tell them, ‘Keep your fork… the best is yet to come’.”

The pastor's eyes filled up with tears of joy as he hugged the woman good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did.

She KNEW that something better was coming.

At the funeral people were walking by the woman's casket and they saw the pretty dress she was wearing and her favorite Bible and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the pastor heard the question "What's with the fork?" And over and over he smiled.

During his message, the pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. The pastor told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right.

The next time you reach down for your fork, let it remind you, oh so gently, that the best is yet to come.

Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. Show your friends how much you care.

NEVER SOCIAL DISTANCE! There’s an argument that for a time, physical distance was of value.

But NEVER Social Distancing. Reach out. Stay connected. BE a friend to others. And may the best days lay ahead of us.

PERMISSION
I’m usually here in my love notes encouraging you to look at your challenges with positivity, to focus on gratitude, and to seek out the lessons, growth, and meaningful effects from those challenges in your life. Today, I wanted to offer something a little different: permission.

Permission to do what? I'm sure you're wondering. And that's simply, permission to allow yourself to feel how you feel about your challenges (even if it isn't positive), to view cancer and its effects however you want to view them (even if that's with anger), and to seek nothing more than what you need in this moment (even if that's to rail against the obstacle that's been put before you).

I manage to remain positive most of the time, but don't let that trick you into thinking that I don't have my moments, my hours, my days, even my weeks. That's the thing with cancer, it sneaks up on you. It sneaks up on you physically, hiding away and buying as much time as it can before it's discovered, and then it continues to sneak up on you mentally and emotionally after that. I can go days without being afraid, and then I'll have a dream, or it will be time for another scan, or a friend will be diagnosed, and there it is again, still holding that gun to the back of my head, making its presence known and making sure I know it will keep doing so, for the rest of my life.

And sometimes, you just can't muster the positivity, the gratitude, the strength to wrestle that gun away from it. And that is O-KAY.

If that's where you are at today (or this week), give yourself permission to be exactly where you are. Sometimes that's exactly what we need, to feel the feels we are usually able to ward off, to redirect, to transmute into something more helpful and positive. Sometimes we need to submerge ourselves in the deepest and darkest part of our emotions so that we can work through them, so that they don't eat us alive.

As important as it is to allow ourselves to do this, it is equally important that we also learn to recognize when it is time to pull ourselves up out of those depths and release those emotions, even if we know that they will likely be back again later; we also need to balance processing with respite. This extricating may be something that we can do on our own with the help of tools like journalling, going for a walk, creating art about how we're feeling, making a video diary, meditating, or any other tool that works for you. And sometimes we need some help, which is when you might want to consider talking to a friend, loved one, or professional.

But in the meantime, give yourself permission to simply be where you are.

Caffeine Offers Protection
Against Weight Gain


CHICAGO – A study conducted at the University of Illinois with the results published in the Journal of Functional Foods suggests that caffeine may offset some of the negative effects from weight gains from a poor diet.

The scientists used rats for the research. For a period of four weeks, the rats in the study were given a diet that contained 40% fat, 45% carbohydrate and 15% protein. They were also given caffeine in an amount equivalent to that of a human who drinks four cups of coffee daily.

At the end of the study , the percentage of lean body mass varied greatly between the different rat groups. The rats that ingested the additional caffeine accumulated less body fat than rats in the other groups.

According to Elvira Gonzalez de Mejia, a co-author of the study:

"Considering the findings, tea and caffeine can be considered anti-obesity agents."

Hey !
I don’t know about you but doesn’t it seem like society is more stressed than ever before? Maybe it’s the pandemic, the protests, the wildfires, or the upcoming US elections?
I don’t really know...
I do know that many of us are feeling frustrated, angry, or stressed. We can get emotionally stuck over a lot of things -- a failed or troubled marriage, plans not working out, trying to lose weight, feeling stuck in the same place, or when we expect too much from ourselves and end up not meeting our expectations.
It’s a feeling that can suck the energy out of you.
So, what can you do? Here’s my 3 Steps to Stress-Free living...
Focus on the here and now. Take some deep breaths to calm yourself. Look at the things around you... The sun shining through your window, the kids playing in the backyard, your dog barking at the neighbors passing by. Get your attention back to the present.
Focus on what you have. Take the time to appreciate the important things we sometimes take for granted -- a roof over your head, food inside your fridge, access to the internet, your family and friends. Spend a few minutes thinking about it and you’ll find much to be grateful for.
Focus on what you can do right now. Think about what steps you can take to improve the situation. You can try one more time or keep going, or you can let it go. Or you can take a day or two to relax and take care of yourself, then get back into moving towards what you want with a regained focus.
Always remember that you are human, and so is everyone else. Accept that sometimes you will make mistakes, have setbacks and not reach your goals when you’d like to, as well as other people around you.
It always helps to talk your frustration over with someone else to see it from a more level-headed perspective.
Lastly, offer a quick prayer to turn over all your frustrations up to Him.
I hope you find these simple tips helpful and use them whenever negative feelings arise.

Migraines Linked to Heart Risk

Migraine headaches affect about 15% of people, mainly women, and migraine patients also face an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, and irregular heart rates.

The risk to heart health appears to be strongest in the first year after diagnosis of migraine, but persists for as long as two decades, said researcher Dr. Kasper Adelborg, a postdoctoral fellow of clinical epidemiology at the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark.

Special: Almost All Diseases Have This Hidden Link

Adelborg and his colleagues gathered records from patients treated at Danish hospitals and hospital outpatient clinics between 1995 and 2013. According to the researchers, for every 1,000 people:

  • 25 migraine patients had a heart attack, compared with 17 migraine-free people.
  • 45 migraine sufferers had a blood clot-related stroke versus 25 without the headache disorder.
  • 27 migraine patients developed life-threatening blood clots in their veins, compared with 18 people without migraines.
  • 47 people with migraine developed an irregular heartbeat, versus 34 migraine-free people.

This morning while I was getting ready for my day and applying my face serums, I was reflecting on the long journey that I have had with my skin.



As you probably know by now, I started my journey of health due to my own vanity and inner knowing that my reactive skin and cystic acne was beyond just a topical issue.



Thousands of dollars later, numerous diets and potions.....I finally cleared it up from the root.



Along my journey, I would find out while studying East Asian medicine that there is a connection between the gut, lungs and skin.
