Caffeine Reduces Dementia Risk

WISCONSIN—A recent study conducted at the University of Wisconsin and published in the Journal of Gerontology found that caffeine could help lower the risk of dementia.

The study included 6,487 participants who were followed for a period of 10 years, they were told to complete diet and lifestyle questionnaires yearly. The researchers focused on their caffeine consumption and cognitive function.

The team found that higher caffeine intake was associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment. Specifically, those who consumed above the median amount of caffeine, which is about two to three cups of coffee, or five to six cups of black tea, exhibited a 36 percent reduction in the risk of dementia over the 10-year period as compared to the group that consumed less caffeine.

According to Mayoclinic.com, caffeine should be consumed in moderation. It is recommended to consume no more than 4 cups of coffee or 7 cups of black tea each day.

If you are interested in reducing your risk of dementia, you might want to consider adding caffeine to your daily diet.

Sweet Ginger Soy Broccoli

Love the garlic broccoli at your local Chinese take-out? Try this as a MSG-free version, that still contains yummy Asian flavors minus the gluten too. If you’ve purchased a whole head of broccoli, you can also eat the stalk. Just peel it with a potato peeler, finely dice and mix it in with whole florets.

Ingredients:
  1. ¼ cup water or broth
  2. 4 ounces broccoli florets (about 2 cups)
  3. 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger root
  4. 1 clove garlic, finely minced
  5. 1 teaspoon tamari
  6. 1 teaspoon stevia
  7. ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions:
  1. Place the water or broth in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  2. Add the broccoli and simmer 2 to 3 minutes, until the broccoli starts to soften the most of the liquid has evaporated
  3. Add the ginger, garlic, tamari, stevia and pepper
  4. Turn the heat to low and continue to cook 1 to 2 minutes until the broccoli is fork tender
  5. Serve immediately

What is Insulin Resistance?
Insulin resistance is also known as pre-diabetes or metabolic syndrome. Mouthwash Helps Fight COVID-19

It's hard to believe that even today some people think washing a kid's mouth out with soap for sassing off is a good idea. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers it a form of child abuse.
But as recently as this year, a Florida teacher was suspended after she declared a talkative student needed to be punished like that, and proceeded to put hand sanitizer (the modern version) into his mouth.

In contrast, using mouthwash to rinse your mouth — voluntarily — can be a healthy step, according to a study in the Journal of Medical Virology. It knocks out the virus that causes COVID-19.
Researchers tested a wide range of mouthwashes, including Crest Pro Health (active ingredient cetylpyridium chloride; safe and effective, but shouldn't be used for more than seven days according to a 1994 FDA report) and Listerine Antiseptic (active ingredients eucalyptol, menthol, methyl salicylate, and thymol). They also looked at hydrogen peroxide–based mouthwashes.
They found that Crest Pro Health killed at least 99.9% of the virus in the mouth; Listerine Antiseptic killed more than 99.99%; and peroxide brands knocked out slightly less.
Overall, the researchers say, "Most of the common over-the-counter mouthwashes/gargles tested demonstrated at least a 90% reduction in infectious virus at one minute of contact time."
And the longer you rinse, the more power they have.
If you want to do all you can to keep COVID-19 at bay, mouthwash is one more effective technique to complement mask wearing and social distancing.

Since the moment you were born, you have been breathing. But, has anyone ever stopped to teach you how to do it properly? Yes, there is a proper way to breathe. By default you may already be doing it, but this email is for those of us that may need some improvement.

The Consequences of Poor Breathing

Poor breathing habits can give rise to a lot of unexpected adverse effects like:
  • Less Energy — Bad breathing decreases your body’s ability to deliver oxygen to the cells. The cells get stressed and have to prioritize survival instead of development.

Try setting a timer to check up on your breathing through out the day.

7 Tips for Cutting Sugar Consumption

Whether the aim is to simply lose weight or a commitment to a healthier lifestyle to prevent disease, tackling sugar cravings can present a formidable challenge to achieving your overall goals.

There are the well-known culprits, like sodas and desserts, but sugar is hidden in many other foods as well. The following tips can help you develop a game plan for making sure you aren’t unknowingly adding sugar to your diet.

• Cut out obvious offenders. Banish the sugar bowl, soft drinks, candy, etc., from your house, car, and office. And don’t forget, sugar is sugar. Raw sugar, brown sugar, honey, and molasses also cause inflammation.

• Eliminate processed and packaged foods. Watch out for these ingredients on your food label: lactose, brown rice syrup, molasses, dextrose, cane sugar, corn sweetener, corn sweetener solids, fructose, glucose, maltose, rice syrup, cane juice crystals, evaporated cane juice, raw sugar, organic raw sugar, and maltodextrin.

• Beware of high fructose corn syrup. This common sweetener in sodas and fruit-flavored drinks is manufactured in a way that turns its glucose into fructose, a type of sugar that is actually sweeter.

• Make sure you’re hungry, not thirsty. Sugar cravings can be a sign you’re dehydrated.

• Get enough sleep. Research finds that people who are tired tend to crave junk foods that include added sugar.

• Eat more protein. Consuming protein at all three daily meals can help beat down sugar cravings. Eggs, chicken, fish, and even modest amounts of red meat are all good ways to pump up the protein.

• Banish alcohol. The problem with sugar is that it’s addictive — and so is alcohol. Not only are cocktails packed with sugar, but alcohol can weaken your resolve to lay off other sugar-laden foods.

Many of us remember our parents or grandparents telling us: “eat your vegetables!”

But we don’t realize the veggies of even a generation or two ago— from “back in the day”— were actually much healthier than they are now.

Foods just aren’t what they used to be in terms of nutrient density. Fruits, vegetables, and even animal products (owing to the way they’re unsustainably and inhumanely raised) are lacking, dull, and lifeless compared to what they were decades ago.

What happened?

Here’s a few things that have sapped our food of nutrition over time:

  • Unhealthy nutrient-depleted soils.
The way we farm (in the mainstream) is killing our soils! It doesn’t have the same trace minerals as it used to, so the foods are losing out on them, too.

What’s worse, our soil is no longer alive. Not only are nutrients disappearing, but soil life is, too— which is also a vital building block for nutritious plant-based foods.
  • Unethical methods for raising animals, eggs, and dairy.
We should be avoiding conventional factory farmed animal products in general, as they are truly bad for the planet…

…but for those who consume animal products, did you know: meat, dairy, and eggs fed their natural diets are much higher in antioxidants? It’s quite a big difference.
  • Plant varieties bred for storage (and not flavor or nutrition)
The seeds and breeds of our food crops themselves have been changed to leave our bodies desperate for nutrients! Both GMO and popular hybrids are chosen not just for nutrition these days, but for other traits instead (like how much of a toxic herbicide they can handle, or how long they can sit on grocery store shelves).

Here’s how to make sure your foods are nutrient-rich:
  • Buy organic, regenerative, or another sustainable label (USDA Organic, or look for the new Regenerative Organic Certified logo).
  • Growing your own food. Grow heirloom, organic, and/or non-GMO seed varieties only. Having foods ready to eat almost immediately after harvesting, from your own garden, you are preserving powerful nutrients, phytochemicals and antioxidants that are night and day compared to what you would find in the store, which has been shipped and refrigerated for days.
  • Eat in season! Whether you source local or grow your own, the foods nearby will be at their nutrient peak if they’re grown when they’re supposed to be grown. (E.g. fresh greens in spring, strawberries in summer, etc.)
Just “eating healthy” is a good first step. But make sure you’re also focusing on nutrient-dense foods, as food wouldn’t be medicine without them.

Is that every mouthful of cheese you eat,


legally contains a certain amount of pus from cows udders…


It’s gross and if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably never heard about this before...


Let me explain…
You see 99% of dairy cows are kept pregnant for much more of their lives than they would be naturally,


This is so that they can be milked much more than they would be in the wild,


Using large machines to get as much milk out of them as possible.


These machines cause enormous pressure and stress on the cows and their udders.


Meaning up to 1 in 6 cows suffer from something called mastitis.

Which in simple terms is an infection of the udder due to over milking.

This is such a common occurrence in America that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) legally allows an acceptable limit of “somatic cells”.


Which is a nice way of saying pus.


Yea, the same stuff you squeeze out of a spot.

In all dairy products.
And those gross infected cells go right into the cheese that then ends up on supermarket shelves.


And ultimately people end up eating.


According to the USDA themselves.


There are up to 1 million pus cells in just a tablespoon of the milk that is used to make cheese.


But this is just one part of the dairy industry that they don’t want you to know about…


It gets worse.

If you’re a vegetarian or meat eater that thinks eating cheese or milk isn’t that cruel, think again .

Because by many measures the dairy industry is actually much crueler than the meat industry.

A dairy cow is put through so much stress in her lifetime...

That the average lifespan is half of what a natural cow would live to…

It starts when a cow is old enough to be artificially inseminated for the first time.


That’s a nice way of saying impregnated by a human.


(The dairy industry has a lot of these terms that makes horrible things sound normal.)


A dairy farmer uses his fist to prepare the cow for artificial insemination.


Once sufficiently loosened up she’s locked into a steel gurney and a large turkey baster like device is used to impregnate her.
When she eventually gives birth her calf is brutally ripped from her straight away.

Cows make a horrible wailing sound for days after this as they mourn the separation from their baby.

If the calf is male it is either sold off for veal, or it is slaughtered on site and discarded.

If the calf is a female she’ll be kept on the dairy farm in a separate location until old enough to be inseminated herself.

Once she’s given birth, the cow starts getting milked on a daily basis.

She’s pumped full of hormones regularly to ensure she keeps producing milk for much longer than she naturally would.

This increased amount of milking is what leads to the udder infections I mentioned earlier.
Now, even with all the extra hormones eventually the milk dries up and the cow is artificially impregnated again to start the cycle all over.


All this means the average dairy cow lives to about half the age it naturally would.


When i first learned all this i was shocked…

Dealing with negative emotions is not easy. You may feel extremely overwhelmed when negative emotions rise to the surface. Acknowledge and understand what these emotions are trying to tell you. Let go of self-judgment. Focus on what you can do to improve your circumstances. Don't run away from your negative emotions. "Plants Tell You What They're For," Says Evan Cohen

What did people do when they felt anxious 300 years ago?

Were they too uncivilized to recognize it? Did we consider it simply part of the muddy cocktail of the human condition? Had local village alchemists discovered SSRIs but we simply term them differently today?

Most people are probably aware that homeopathic knowledge – ancestral, indigenous, generational, or any other variety – is often overlooked in medical science.

In fact, because the traditions tend to be passed down orally, or in languages other than common lingua francas, some consider this knowledge to be “forgotten.”

Especially as monoculture threatens to permanently alter ecosystems, and those in power are ignorant as to the uses of the plants they’re harming, it’s essential to encourage those who can to keep the knowledge alive.

That’s what drives Evan Cohen, an herbalist who just happens to live in one of the most biodiverse regions of the country – Madison County, North Carolina. She even studied there at the nationally heralded Terra Sylva Herb School.

Right inside the Blue Ridge Mountains lurks land that’s been untouched by industrial hands – mostly, anyway. It’s hard to say exactly what it looked like 500 years ago, but as of right now, it’s an amazing place to study botanicals, herbology, and anything else that involves using the natural world to care for the inner human world.

In fact, my Grandmaster used to say “within 15 feet of where you’re standing, there’s a remedy to whatever you’re suffering from.”

I’d say that’s certainly true in Madison County.

Last week, I got to chat with Evan, who does so much with nature it’s hard to fully quantify it.

She’s an herbalist, and sometimes a wildcrafter – which means she grows and harvests plants to use for medicinal purposes, sometimes plucking them right where they’re found in nature, and enhances their useability for the average layperson – and she’s in the perfect place to do it.

However, herbalism isn’t where her connection with improving the conditions of nature and man ends.​

The Many Functions of Evan

Some of her favorite parts about the work that she does include making flower essences, botanicals, tinctures, and – not as different as you’d think – being a doula.

Evan’s focus is always on how best to nurture.

Sometimes she does that by educating her clients and followers about how to use yarrow, the origins of distilling flower essences, and sometimes by shepherding people through the arduous emotional task of being pregnant, whether or not they choose to become a parent.

Throughout the podcast, Evan discusses some of the more surprising parts about the life she’s decided to live…

When she first began her herbalism journey many years ago, one of the principles that helped guide her was that plants often look like what they’re designed to do (the doctrine of energetic signatures)...

It seems obvious once you know it. Societies without alphabets and common languages and written history had to figure out what kinds of plants protect and what kinds hurt, right?​

While Evan can trust in the botanical world that things are what they seem…

She can’t say the same about being a doula.

Pregnant People Look Like Everyone

And people who choose to create families look every way you could possibly imagine.

The best part, for her, of being a doula is getting to support families on their journey to becoming whatever kind of family they want to be, whatever that looks like.

For Evan’s part, she loves to be a non-judgmental participant, to observe things not as she wants them to be, but as they are. It’s an important and hard-won lesson for all people to learn, really.

Just as our ancestors noticed that repeatedly using one plant’s essence tended to elicit similar physical and spiritual responses, the order of the world around is already decided. Our only role is to encourage it in its path, and seek its uses without causing harm.

That’s the central tenet of her doula work (she gets deeper into it during the podcast).
