Today's Motivation

Saturday

April 03, 2021

Changing certain aspects of yourself is hard. However, the effort is well worth it. Change requires daily dedication. If you don't work on those aspects now, you will remain dissatisfied and keep complaining about it. Start by changing the actions you take each day. Don't live on autopilot, be more mindful of what you do. Stop to think whether what you're doing every day is helping you to become who you want to be. Believe in yourself. You don't have to live with your shortcomings forever. You can become better.

Music Eases Pain, Anxiety After Heart Attack

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

People often turn to music to boost their mood or relieve stress, and a new study has found that listening to 30 minutes of music a day — along with standard medications — eased complications in people who had recently suffered a heart attack.

“Thirty minutes a day of listening to music reduced anxiety, pain sensation, and pain distress,” said Dr. Guy Mintz, director of cardiovascular health at the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital in Manhasset, New York, in reaction to the findings.

“Based on our findings, we believe music therapy can help all patients after a heart attack. It’s also very easy and inexpensive to implement,” said study author Dr. Predrag Mitrovic, professor of cardiology at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Medicine in Serbia.

Special: Is It Normal Nervousness . . . or an Anxiety Disorder?

For the study, 350 people who had suffered a heart attack and episodes of chest pain within two days were randomly assigned standard post-heart attack treatment or standard treatment along with daily music sessions.

Researchers tested volunteers to see which type of music led to positive changes in their body by playing 30-second samples of music they might find soothing. During that time, researchers measured subjects’ pupils for narrowing or dilation, which indicated how the music affected the body’s involuntary responses, enabling them to select the best tone and tempo of music for volunteers to listen to.

After seven years, people in the music therapy group had less anxiety, pain, and distress than those who did not listen to music. On average, anxiety was about 33% lower among the music therapy group, and chest pain symptoms decreased by about 25%.

“Music acts on the sympathetic nervous system, making you feel more calm and less anxious and lowering blood pressure,” explained Dr. Peter Mercurio, a cardiologist at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, New York.

Stop GMO Mosquitoes

IRT is part of the Coalition Against GMO Mosquitoes. Because the massive release of gene-edited mosquitoes (750,000 for the first go, leading to BILLIONS) is a terrible idea!!
We strongly encourage you to sign the petition and tell President Joe Biden, EPA Administrator Michael Regan, Department of Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, and Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) Executive Director Andrea Leal to stop this dangerous experiment.
Send a message today to demand that they stop the release of GMO mosquitoes. This campaign is getting some good traction out there and some political support in Washington. Let’s make it happen!

Life can be pretty hard. It is for everyone, no matter where they come from. The type of problems other people face in their lives might be different than yours, but it doesn't change the fact that everybody goes through difficult situations in their lives. If you get the opportunity to spread positivity and make people happier, go for it. It makes them, as well you feel better. We all can help each other be more positive. Brighten someone's day today.

Hi Jimi,
Have you ever tried an Epsom salts bath?
Many people find that the best way to relax at the end of a long day is with a hot bath, but you may be missing out if you aren’t yet using Epsom salt!
Epsom salts are cheap and provide a great way to help balance the minerals in your body, lowering inflammation.
If you suffer from any of these symptoms, a good bath may be just what the doctor ordered
:
  • Anxiety, depression, or high stress levels
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Disrupted gut functioning
  • Weakness, spasms, or muscular cramping
  • Poor concentration and memory
  • Constipation
For more information on how you can gain these Epsom salt bath benefits, you need to know just what these salts contain and how to use them:

CHANGE

I'm having a hard time writing this week's love note. My heart is heavy today for some reasons unrelated to cancer, and I know that our usual instinct as humans is to push those feelings away. It definitely is the first thing that always pops into my head when I experience a negative emotion. "Nope!", my brain says, "NOT dealing with this! It's totally fine. You don't need to worry about it.", and about a million other attempted persuasions run through my mind in a split second.

But cancer has taught me so much and changed me in so many ways, and one of those very important areas of learning and change has been do to with exploring, feeling, and dealing with my negative emotions in a healthy way. It's a process, that's for sure, and I'm far from an expert at it yet, but I keep trying, and that's the most important thing.

We all make mistakes. We all have regrets. And cancer and other big challenges can be the source of some our biggest mistakes and regrets. But it's how we feel our way through them, correct them if we can, and move on a little bit wiser for next time that matters the most. Being open to our need to change when we are confronted with it, instead of getting defensive and shutting off, is the best first step we can take. And being kind and forgiving to ourselves as we work through the changes is the best second step. I'm bolding these words so that I remember them myself.

Cancer brings a lot of change with it that we didn't ask for or want, and for many of us on the integrative route it also brings with it the decision that there are some changes that we want to make in order to be as healthy as we can be moving forward. We will feel an array of complex emotions in response to these changes - guilt we didn't make them earlier, sadness at what we are choosing to give up, resentment that we have to - and whatever you are feeling is entirely okay. Just give yourself the permission to feel it, and then start taking the steps that are right for you in order to explore, grow from, and move on from those emotions, taking with you what it is you need from the experience.

Change is often stressful, but it can also have beautiful results. I have decided to make some branding/name changes to Orenda Cancer Community which will be coming in the next few weeks, and though it is a little scary to leave behind some of the things that started this journey with me, I know that it is the right decision and that beautiful things are on the way to take up the mantle. Keep an eye out :)

Happy Healing ❤️

Mental Health Monday

As if cancer wasn’t bad enough on its own, it has to bring a bunch of other unwanted guests to the party, emotions like anger and bitterness and frustration. One of those little party poopers is resentment, and it was definitely one that I wasn’t expecting to drop in. This week's MHM vlog is all about a four-step process for releasing resentment that I stumbled upon on some long-forgotten website. Though I didn’t come up with these steps myself, they have come to take on their own meaning for me in the context of my cancer diagnosis, and in this vlog, I explore and explain what each stage is and what the work at each one has looked like for me. In the next MHM vlog, I will get into some specific tools that I have found helpful for the work at two of the more challenging steps of this process, but for now, Part 1 gives you a helpful framework and some insight into said framework that can support you in beginning the work of facing, feeling, dealing with, and healing from your feelings of resentment.
