Don’t Discount Benefits of Omega-3s

In 1993, the Bee Gees crooned in "Omega Man": "I'm the Omega Man/Stand tall and understand/Everybody needs a plan."

That could be the theme song of omega-3s these days. When a study came out in the journal Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy saying that high doses of fish oil are correlated with the onset of atrial fibrillation (a heart rhythm disorder that can lead to stroke), people started discounting the amazing benefits of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in omega-3s.

That's a mistake. Fortunately, we have a plan for getting the benefits of omega-3s.

First, let's review what a supply of dietary omega-3 DHA from salmon, sardines, sea trout, herring, and anchovies can do for you. There's no dispute that it helps lower your risk for heart attack, heart disease, and death from cardiovascular disease.

It's also good for the brain, helping protect against stroke and dementia, and can ease symptoms of mild depression. A study in the journal Translational Psychiatry even shows that adolescents with higher levels of DHA at age 17 are 56% less likely to become psychotic at age 24.

As for taking omega-3 supplements: A new study finds that children born to moms who took DHA-rich fish oil while pregnant have faster processing speed when solving complex problems, and better results in attention tests at age 10.

For moms-to-be and everyone else — especially if you don't eat fish — we recommend asking your doctor about taking low- or moderate-dose supplements made from algal oil. That's fish's source of omega-3s too.

Spending time alone can help you reflect on things that you, as an individual, value the most. This ensures you retain your own individuality while also strengthening your relationship.

Use your alone time to sit with your emotions and become more comfortable on your own. Creating a strong foundation for yourself will help you effectively manage the ups and downs of your relationship.

Recognizing and Preventing Dehydration

As Wolverine, actor Hugh Jackman made the contours of his muscles, veins, and bones pop out by intentionally becoming super-dehydrated for 36 hours before shooting shirtless scenes.

That’s risky business. In 1992, 33-year-old professional bodybuilder Mohammed Benaziza died following a competition when severe dehydration caused heart failure.

Even if you don't collapse, repeatedly making yourself dehydrated can cause long-term reduction in muscle strength.

Unintentional dehydration is just as risky. And it can sneak up on you, especially in the summer.

One study in the American Journal of Public Health found that half of kids don't get adequate hydration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says American adults only take in about 39 ounces of water daily (that's around three tall glasses), which is not nearly what's needed to keep your bowels, kidneys, and heart happy.

Add to that temperatures in the 80s and above and — we hope — an hour of aerobic exercise, and you could be 40 to 80-plus ounces short of what you need.

Signs of a dehydration crisis include dizziness, fatigue, confusion, headache, and less volume or darker urine.

Unfortunately, by the time you're thirsty and have a dry mouth, you're already starting to dry out inside. Your best bet is to drink 16 ounces of water first thing in the morning and then drink a glass of water (not some sugary soda or sports or energy drink) every couple of hours during the day.

When you exercise, drink every 15 minutes, outdoors or in the gym. And remember to have a glass of water after every alcoholic beverage.

Ever turn your house upside down searching for a lost smartphone or car keys?

But as I get older, these brain “blips” are less a source of annoyance and more a source of concern.
