  • Blend them in dips. Like hummus or guacamole. Or add some spinach to your pesto.
  • Make fresh green juices. Use mostly leafy greens and veggies, and little fruit, like apple and lemon.

Does COPD Endanger the Heart?

Every tissue and organ in your body operates according to a biological tempo known as circadian rhythm. Your body clock, located in your brain’s hypothalamus, is the master timekeeper that ensures biological processes run according to schedule.

It oversees about a dozen so-called “clock genes” that are expressed differently at various times of the day or night to meet the body’s demands during waking and sleeping hours. Such processes include eating, sleeping, and temperature regulation.

Special: Sleep Better With This Doctor's Natural Secret

Here are three ways you can take control of your body clock to keep your health in balance.

1. Practice Time-Restricted Eating: Satchin Panda, author of “The Circadian Code,” recommends time-restricted eating as the best method to synchronize your body clock with food consumption. He recommends eating a substantial well-balanced breakfast as early as possible, a light lunch, and a simple meal of protein and vegetables for dinner — with all meals consumed within a 12-hour period. Also, no food or alcohol after dinner.

2. Exercise Strategically: Panda also looked into the issue of timing exercise with your circadian rhythm. He recommends taking a brisk walk outdoors in the morning to help synchronize your body clock and stimulate your brain cells. The period between 3 p.m. and dinnertime is when muscle tone begins to rise, so this is an ideal time for strength training. Also, mild exercise in the evening helps promote good digestion and regulates blood sugar levels.

3. Live Predictably: Too often, people think their bodies crave change. But researchers find time and again that what the body really wants is predictability. Stick to a daily routine that includes plenty of activity, healthy eating, and also keeping regular hours, and resist “burning the candle at both ends.”

If you respect your body clock, and endeavor to live in sync with it, you will find this is a huge boost in your quest to beat heart disease.

Nutrition Bite​

Today we explore the science of if (and how) reducing your meat intake can lower your risk of heart disease.

We all know that meat consumption has been part of many human diets for millenia.

However, until about a century ago, the quantity of meat eaten was miniscule compared to what most omnivores eat today, and the quality was far superior.

This and other factors have led health experts to take a closer look at the connection between meat consumption and the alarming rise in heart disease.

Three things stand out from the many studies published about meat and heart disease:

  1. Eating Red Meat Triples Levels Of Trimethylamine N-oxide
    Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is something our gut makes when we eat red meat. TMAO can increase cholesterol deposits in arteries, blood pressure and blood clots. All of these contribute to heart disease and have been linked to heart attacks and strokes. [1]

  2. Meat Contains Saturated Fat
    Most experts agree that one reason meat contributes to heart disease is because of how much saturated fat it contains. The more saturated fat you consume, the more LDL “bad” cholesterol your body makes.

  3. Meat Consumptions Deteriorates Your Heart Health
    As if raising your cholesterol levels and clogging your arteries wasn’t bad enough...eating meat literally damages your heart. Research shows that eating meat leads to smaller ventricles, stiffer arteries and overall weaker heart function. [2] Processed meats like bacon, sausages and canned meat have demonstrated even worse results. This is probably because they contain a lot more fat and sodium. These both increase cholesterol and blood pressure.
Based on this information, it’s logical to assume that yes, consuming less meat really does lower your risk of heart disease.

However, there’s something else that is equally as important…

What you are replacing it with.

You see, if you’re swapping out your meat intake with whole-food, plant-based sources of protein such as beans, legumes, whole grains and non-GMO soy, then you will likely reduce your risk of developing heart disease.

On the other hand, if you replace your meat with packaged, processed, sugary foods that have been stripped of their nutrients, the benefits (if there are any!) will be much less significant.

When you replace meat with whole-food plant-based alternatives, the following heart-healthy changes can follow:

  1. A Decrease in Cholesterol
    Swapping animal products for plant-based foods definitely means you’ll be getting more fiber, which is fantastic! Among other wonderful things, fiber lowers cholesterol and detoxifies your body, which your heart loves.

  2. A Healthier Gut
    Many people don’t realize that a happy gut equals a happy heart, as well. In fact, fiber-rich plant-based foods promote a healthy gut (microbiome). This “good” gut bacteria helps your heart by keeping your arteries free of bad cholesterols, as well as keeping your blood vessels healthy.

  3. A Decrease in Inflammation
    There is a LOT of evidence that shows meat to be pro-inflammatory (meaning it causes inflammation in our bodies). This is also connected to the high amounts of saturated fat in meat. But plants can actually reduce inflammation. Experts believe this is because plants are so high in detoxifying antioxidants.
These are all great health benefits. So to answer the question…

Does eating less meat REALLY lower your risk of heart disease? YES! It certainly seems that science backs that up.

However, when it comes to heart health, there are many myths and misunderstandings out there.

When you’re angry, you tend to lose perspective and say a lot of unkind things. You don’t even have control over the words coming out of your mouth.

It's better to remain silent and give yourself time to gather your thoughts. Do not succumb to negative energy.

Let the other person know that you will resolve the issue once you both calm down and feel ready. Aggression from both sides only makes things worse.

You can't reach a conclusion when you're both getting defensive. Sometimes you have to bite your tongue and be patient until both of you are in a better frame of mind.

Controlling Cholesterol Can Lower Cancer Risks

Let’s start with some good and tasty news: Pecans (as in a pecan-pomegranate salad or the newly available pecan milk, not sugary pecan pie) can help you stay healthy in important ways. And because 80% of the world's pecans are grown in the U.S., they’re never in short supply.

A study out of the University of Georgia found that eating 2.4 ounces of pecans daily for eight weeks cut LDL cholesterol levels by 6% to 9%, substantially reducing the risk of coronary artery disease.

And the benefits of lowering LDL cholesterol go beyond protecting your heart health; it may also help protect you from cancer.

A study in the journal Nature Communications reveals that chronically high cholesterol levels increase the risk of breast cancer and lead to worse outcomes from most types of cancer, because the cholesterol protects metastasizing cancer cells, allowing them to spread.

To get your bad cholesterol down and good cholesterol up:

• Add pecans (and walnuts) to your plant-centered diet; ditch red and processed meats and added sugars.

• Walk at least an hour a day five days a week to lower LDL cholesterol, and consider cycling to raise heart-healthy HDL cholesterol.

If you take those steps but still have trouble getting your LDL to 100 or lower, ask your doctor about taking a statin. It not only clears out excess LDL, it reduces inflammation and might help treat and inhibit some cancers, and helps manage liver disease.

If you're intolerant of statins, ask about new alternative meds.

But that doesn't mean they are any less valuable. You can think of them fondly and appreciate their value even if you’ve moved on.

Friendships are susceptible to circumstances. It’s only natural for friends to drift apart as time goes on. Don't feel guilty about it.

You don't have to rekindle every friendship you once had. Focus on meeting new people and making new friends that fit your current life situation.
