Hey there Jimi,
Everybody needs to move their feet. Walking can improve your blood circulation, protect your heart, reduce pain and improve your mood. According to several studies, people who walk every day spend less time in the hospital, have lower blood pressure and feel less depressed.

If you want to burn calories, you probably need to kick things up a notch to brisk walking, but even going for a calm, relaxed walk is good for you. How many steps should you aim for every day?

“Are You Serious … 10,000 Steps?!”

Many health professionals recommend reaching about 10,000 steps a day. That equals about 5 miles. If you feel a little shocked, you’re not alone. Most Americans only walk 3,000–4,000 steps on average, or around 2 miles.

Good news! A recent study says that you’re OK aiming for between 7,000 and 10,000 steps a day. It’s that 7,000-step marker that’s really important for your heart and your health.

Keep in mind that counting the steps you take looks at your physical activity throughout the day. It includes walking from place to place at work, walking around the store when you’re shopping for groceries and doing activities at home.

The Benefits of Walking More

Any physical exercise has a positive effect on your health, but hitting that range of 7,000–10,000 steps a day can make a major impact:

Lower risk of heart problems​

Reduced risk of developing diabetes​

Lower overall weight​

Lower cholesterol levels​

Tips for Upping Your Step Count

You don’t need a gym membership or expensive equipment to meet your step count goals. Here are a few tips for success:

Use a comfy pair of shoes: Walking shoes can help you enjoy your exercise more. The happier your feet are, the more likely you’ll get into a walking routine.​

Set smaller goals: You don’t have to reach your magical number from one day to another. If you’re hitting 4,000 a day this week, aim for 5,000 a day next week.​
•​
Walk at work: Visit co-workers in person instead of sending emails or calling their extension. Physical activity does you good.​
•​
Go for a walk after lunch: Instead of heading back to your desk right away after lunch, take advantage of your time to go for a short walk outside. Plus, the fresh air is good for mental focus and mood in the afternoon.​

Put on some music: An energetic tune gets you in the mood to move your feet without even thinking about it.

Ways To Stay Active During Cold Months

What if you can’t spend much time outdoors because of freezing temps? Instead of counting 7,000–10,000 steps, focus on doing moderate exercise for 150–300 minutes a week (20–40 minutes a day). Riding a bike, jumping rope, vacuuming your house, using an elliptical trainer and following a dance routine are examples of moderate-intensity exercise you can do at home. Remember that the main goal is just to increase your heart rate and get your muscles working!

To-Do List: Truthfully, this is one of my go-tos while I'm at work or at home on the go. Writing down a to-do list, then prioritizing all of the tasks on my mind gives me a sense of clarity and focus when I'm feeling stressed.

Candles: Candles also seem to be a fan favorite. The ritual of burning candles can be very relaxing and typically citrus and floral fragrances is a great balance of the two. The scent is comforting and tranquil yet allows people to escape.

Salt Lamps: Salt lamps are a hit right now. You can keep one on your bedside table or even a small one on your desk at work! Some people say that they instantly feel calmer as soon as they turn the lamp on. There's something about the warm, yellow glow that makes any room way more peaceful.

3 Bean Chili
(full recipe in this email below)


Spicy or mild, packed with vegetables or rich with beans, chili is a versatile dish that can accommodate all sorts of tastes and preferences.

And it is chalk full of flavor and nutrient-dense ingredients.

Together, pinto, kidney, and black beans deliver a carbohydrate-rich meal to help regulate your blood glucose.

So grab a pot and let's fill it with health boosting plant-based foods.

3 Bean Chili
Ingredients:
  • ¼ cup Vegetable Broth, Low-Sodium
  • 3 cups Onion, Chopped
  • 6 Cloves Garlic, Minced
  • 1 Green Bell Pepper, Medium, chopped
  • 1 Red Bell Pepper, Medium, chopped
  • ½ cup Chili Powder
  • 2 tbsp Ground Cumin
  • ¼ tsp Oregano
  • 1 ½ tsp Sweet Paprika
  • 3 cups Pinto Beans (Cooked) Rinsed and drained
  • 3 cups Red Kidney Beans (Cooked) Rinsed and drained
  • 3 cups Black Beans (Cooked) Rinsed and drained
  • 3 cups Canned Diced Tomatoes, Low-Sodium
  • ½ cup Tomato Paste
  • ½ cup Canned Green Chili
  • 2 cups Water
  • ½ tsp Ground Black Pepper

Directions:
  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, heat up the vegetable broth. Add the onion, green and red bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté, stirring until the onions are soft, 5 to 7 minutes.
  2. Add the seasonings, all beans, diced tomatoes, tomato, green chilis, and water.
  3. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes.
  4. Serve in bowls.

Note: Add more water if needed to achieve the consistency you prefer.​

Researchers asked nearly 1,400 adults age 20 and older with self-reported asthma about their sleep habits. About 25% said they slept five hours or less a night (short sleepers), 66% slept six to eight hours a night (normal sleepers), and 8% slept nine or more hours a night (long sleepers).

Special: Poor Sleep Linked to Alzheimer’s and Cardiac Risk

Compared to normal sleepers, short sleepers had a higher risk of an asthma attack, dry cough, and an overnight hospitalization during the prior year, and significantly worse health-related quality of life, including poor physical and mental health and inactivity due to poor health.

Compared to normal sleepers, long sleepers were more likely to have some activity limitation due to wheezing, but no other significant differences.

The study backs up the practice of asthma patients discussing sleep issues with their allergists. Those discussions can help determine if they need to change their asthma plan to achieve adequate sleep as a component of overall good asthma management.
