Stressed out? You’re not alone. Survey finds 92% of women and 76% of men feel stressed out.
Hello Jimi,
A new survey by Value Penguin asked more than 1,500 people across the country about their weekly stress levels and underlying causes. The survey shows that women experienced a more significant shift in stress levels than men. Ninety-two percent of women feel stressed at least one day in a given week. In comparison, 76% of men feel stressed at least one day a week.
Another survey, this one by the American Psychological Association, which partnered with The Harris Poll found that stress is a common complaint among U.S adults.
The Ukraine war, political fractions, inflation, the economy, gas prices, supply chain issues, and global uncertainty have created the perfect storm.
Adults in the survey reported feeling emotionally overwhelmed and physically fatigued. The vast majority of adults (87%) agreed it feels like there has been a constant stream of crises over the last two years, & more than seven in 10 (73%) said they are overwhelmed by the number of crises facing the world right now.

How Homocysteine Affects Health

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:


I’m a chemistry geek — I love studying biochemical pathways and finding ways to help improve their performance, which helps the body function optimally. In fact, I think all healthcare practitioners should be finding and using substances that support (or even enhance) biochemistry, and avoiding those that block or even poison it.

Nearly all drug therapies work by poisoning enzymes and blocking receptors, thereby disrupting our biochemistry. Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is an intermediate substance in the methylation pathway. Methylation simply refers to adding a molecule of methyl — made up of one carbon atom plus three hydrogen atoms, or CH3 — to various substances.

Special: The Shocking Truth About Magnesium

For instance, when the methylation pathway is working well, folic acid can be converted to methyl folic acid, which helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and blood clots. The enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) converts folic acid into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, which is required to convert homocysteine into methionine. This reaction is catalyzed by vitamin B12.

Methionine helps the body produce fatty acids for cell membranes. A genetic defect in the MTHFR enzyme can cause a problem converting folic acid into 5-methyltetrahyrdrofolate. That can lead to an elevated homocysteine level because 5-methyl-tetrahyrdrofolate is necessary for converting homocysteine into methionine.

Unfortunately, MTHFR defects are very common.

There is another important pathway for homocysteine metabolism: the transsulfuration pathway, which depends on an adequate intake of sulfur in the diet. In this pathway, homocysteine can be converted into glutathione — the strongest antioxidant in the body.

Sulfur is found in eggs, meats, legumes, and nuts. It is also found in some vegetables such as garlic and onions. But most fruits and vegetables do not contain much sulfur.

It is important to eat a diet that contains adequate sulfur for the proper metabolism of homocysteine.

Medicinal Plants to Treat Cancer



There are thousands of plant medicines and all the solutions the Earth provides are truly incredible. Every day at the clinic we are utilizing the plant kingdom to treat patients.

One thing we have found is that circulating tumor cells (cells circulating in the blood that have come off a tumor) only respond to natural substances and do not respond to chemotherapy. Therefore, when it comes to reducing the level of CTCs, we heavily rely on substances from the Earth. These medicines are not weak. They have a strong effect on the body. For example, cascara sagrada can cause discoloration of the colon if too much is taken.

1. Mistletoe (Iscador)
Mistletoe targets the cancer cell instead of all cells. Interestingly enough, mistletoe uses trees rather than soil to grow in all directions, mirroring an unruly cancer cell.

Results from a study done on mistletoe therapy for cancer treatment show survival time of patients treated with Iscador was longer for all types of cancer studied. Roughly 40% longer than in the control groups.

2. Taxol (Yew Tree)
Taxol, originally extracted from the bark of the Pacific yew tree, is one of the most commonly used drugs against solid tumors and is a front-line drug for treating ovarian and advanced breast cancer. "The drug is known to bind to microtubules and essentially freeze them in place, which prevents them from separating the chromosomes when a cell divides. This kills dividing cells, in particular cancer cells, which are known for rapid proliferation."

3. Cascara Sagrada
Cascara Sagrada is an aged bark that is utilized for constipation. "The bark is very bitter — which stimulates the vagus nerve, liver, and digestive organs. As bile acids and pancreatic secretions begin moving in the gastrointestinal tract, it triggers the gastric mucosa to expand and contract. This is important to help foods move through the digestive tract.

Some of the active compounds in the herb work by irritating the digestive mucosa — causing them to writhe and contract. This herb needs to be used carefully — high doses can be very uncomfortable and result in serious harm.

It's similar in structure to anthracycline — which is a class of chemicals used in cancer chemotherapy. They work to intercalate the DNA of cancer cells."

4. Agaricus Blazei
Agaricus Blazei is known in Brazil as "Cogumelo de Deus," or "Mushroom of God," because of its reputation for bestowing health and longevity on those who consume it.

When researchers began investigating this unique species, they found the mushroom to be high in immunomodulating substances that not only served to strengthen the immune system but also induced apoptosis (cell suicide) in cancerous cells.

A clinical report from South Korea confirmed that the mushroom dramatically reduces, the side effects of chemotherapy.

The plant kingdom is one of the greatest gifts to mankind. It should be used strategically. These plant medicines are not dietary food. They are powerful and can come with side effects. Furthermore, they are not magic bullets and are often used alongside other therapies.

Different cancers respond to medicines depending on their pathology. A culture of the pathology can be used to see which substances may have a medicinal effect on cancer​

Have you ever eaten and got a mysterious rash or hives?
Does a glass or two of red wine cause a raging headache a few hours later?
Have you sworn off berries, coffee, tea, or nuts because they give you sinus pain and sneezing fits?
If so, you may be experiencing a salicylate sensitivity.
Salicylates are a type of polyphenol present in many healthy plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices, wine, tea, and coffee.
For most people, a diet rich in polyphenols like salicylates is a really good thing…
They’re powerful antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving.
In fact, we have historical records from 4,000 years ago that talk about the medicinal use of plant-extracted salicylates.
Salicylates can also have beneficial antimicrobial and antibacterial effects on the microbiome.
In 2012, researchers from the University of Barcelona found that salicylate concentrations added to bacteria in vivo inhibited the formation of pathogenic E. Coli biofilm.
And today, they’re found in tons of drugs and OTC medications—like Aspirin.
The point is:
A healthy human body really likes polyphenols…
But only if they are fully digested and metabolized.
Remember, what our gut can’t properly break down actually becomes harmful...
And people with yeast/bacterial overgrowth, microbiome dysbiosis, leaky gut, or low enzymes seem to be at higher risk for developing salicylate intolerance.
The current theory is that a disrupted microbiome and lowered polyphenol-reducing enzymes impair your ability to metabolize salicylates (remember this, we’ll cover it again in just a moment)…
Which turns these usually healthy foods into inflammatory substances, creating an over-burden on the body.
The inflammation caused by salicylate intolerance usually shows up in the upper respiratory system, skin, or GI tract, causing symptoms like:
  • Asthma (up to 23% of adults with asthma also have salicylate intolerance)
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sinus infections
  • Excessive sneezing
  • Allergies, or allergy-like symptoms
  • Migraines or headaches
  • Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
  • Rashes, hives, or itchy skin
  • Abdominal pain, gas, or bloating
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
(Another obvious sign is that you can’t take Aspirin without having a reaction.)
If you get reactions like this from wine, coffee, fruits, vegetables, or nuts… your first thought might be to avoid them for good.
But I would caution you against that.
Low-Salicylate Diets, like most elimination diets, should only be around an 8-week intervention.
Because the truth is, salicylates and polyphenols are everywhere.
Just like FODMAPs, nitrates, and lectins, the idea that we can find a sustainable lifelong diet without them is insane.
On top of that, it’s also potentially harmful to your health, as you’re removing many nutrient-dense foods full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
In fact, in a review on children that were put on low salicylate diets, researchers noted:
“a high proportion (31/66) of children suffered adverse outcomes, including nutritional deficiencies and food aversion, with four children developing eating disorders”.
Now, I don’t think you should still eat a ton of salicylates if they cause you problems...
I’m just saying to try and remove them for a short period of 8 weeks, all the while working to heal the root causes of your inability to process them.
As I firmly believe the goal should always be to increase our capacity for a wide variety of foods.
Unfortunately, salicylate intolerance is pretty complex, and no one currently seems to know exactly what causes it or how to fix it.
However, there are a few things you can do to decrease your exposure to salicylates without having to entirely cut them out, while you work on increasing your body’s capacity to metabolize them.
4 ways to help with Salicylate Intolerance:
1.) Peel fruits and veggies before eating them.
The peels and skins tend to be higher in phenols, so removing them before eating can help reduce salicylate content.
2.) Eat fresh fruit, not dried. Dried fruits seem to be higher in salicylates or more likely to cause reactions, potentially due to the removal of water.
3.) Take glycine with meals. Glycine binds with salicylates, so taking it with meals can help to absorb and excrete excess salicylates.

Should You Take Aspirin for Your Heart?

Aspirin was originally developed at the turn of the 20th century by German pharmaceutical manufacturer Bayer as an anti-inflammatory drug to treat pain, fever, and other forms of inflammation. But today, an estimated 60 million Americans a day take this drug for the purpose of preventing a heart attack or stroke.

And although many people consider aspirin to be harmless, this prophylactic use has become highly controversial in medical circles regarding potential risks and benefits of aspirin for preventing cardiovascular disease.

Aspirin can be traced back to ancient times and was one of the first drugs to be widely marketed. By 1899, it was being sold around the world.

In the 1950s, a Californian physician named Dr. Lawrence Craven published three articles about a clinical trial he conducted on the daily use of aspirin and concluded it appeared to protect patients from heart attacks and strokes.

Though it took many years, the idea of aspirin as a preventive medicine finally broke through, and a subsequent women’s study found a similar benefit.

Many physicians are sticking to the long-held belief that low-dose aspirin benefits not only adults who already have heart disease, but also those who have not been diagnosed.

Talk to your doctor about the use of aspirin, especially if you are on a prescription blood thinner. A recent study found that 5.7% of patients who experienced a bleeding incident were on both a prescription blood thinner and aspirin, compared to 3.3% who were on a blood thinner alone.

Methylation: The Tail Does Not Wag the Dog?​

In the previous newsletter, I wrote about the "massive methylation misconception" and why methylation is not all about the B vitamin called folate.
As a quick reminder, methylation is simply the addition of a tiny molecule called a "methyl group" to any other molecule.
The addition of methyl groups changes how molecules function and can change a molecule with certain functions into a different molecule with different functions.
The body uses methylation in thousands of processes like detoxification, regulating neurotransmitters and DNA expression, etc.
Methylation is involved in producing molecules that enable your cell membranes, nerves, brain, muscles, liver, etc to function (e.g. phosphatidylcholine and creatine)
Methylation is involved in converting one neurotransmitter to another or eliminating excess neurotransmitters or hormones like estrogen.
Methylation of DNA typically turns off the genes being methylated, which is part of the process of regulating gene expression.
Obviously, methylation is hugely important.
HOWEVER, when it comes to dealing with health issues that involve problems with methylation, such as undermethylation or overmethylation (as discussed in the previous email), focusing too much on the methylation issue can be the wrong strategy.
The reason is that methylation does not exist in a vaccum and is not usually the "root cause" of anything, though sometimes it is.
It is affected by many other factors like toxins, oxidative stress, inflammation, and the phenomenon known as the "Cell Danger Response" (CDR).
The CDR is a cascade of metabolic changes in response to a threat like an infection. toxic exposure, physical trauma, or psychological trauma.
When the body's response is not effective, the CDR can become chronic.
In his research on the CDR, Robert Naviaux, PhD found that one of the changes brought on by the CDR is a reduction in methylation.
So whether or not a person has genes or nutritional deficiencies or excesses that would tend to cause undermethylation or overmethylation, it's important to look at everything going on in the body that affects methylation.
That's why in my analysis of a person's situation, I use the "pyramid" chart that I've mentioned in previous emails.
Although it is designed to examine genes, enzymes, and the interactions between them, even without genetic data the pyramid chart helps to map how oxidative stress, inflammation, detoxification, gut function, nutrient utilization, etc influence one another.
Methylation is at the top of the pyramid is methylation because it's being influenced by everything below it on the pyramid.
Resolving problems with methylation usually involves resolving problems in pathways appearing beneath it on the pyramid.
In other words, methylation is kind of like the tail on a dog. It's probably fair to say that at least in chronic illness, the dog wags the tail. The tail does not wag the dog.
Then again, methylation drives and regulates so many things in the body, it's far more significant and influential than the tail on a dog, and it does kind of wag the dog in certain ways. So it's not a perfect metaphor.
In any case, even as important as methylation is, health issues that involve problems with methylation are not all about methylation.
There may even be a constructive reason that the body reduces methylation in the Cell Danger Response.
It might even be counterproductive to push methylation in somebody that is undermethylating due to the Cell Danger Response.
These are just some things to keep in mind when you see or hear methylation discussed in the functional medicine and nutrition world.

A meeting that starts at 08:00 CEST (2:00 am EST) April 12, 2022 was announced at the end of last week, leaving little time for public input, but comments are open until 11:00 am EST, Wednesday, April 13.
WHO created an Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) to work out the details of the global Pandemic Treaty planned for adoption at the 2024 World Health Assembly. It intended that the agreement be legally binding on member states.
This is an unacceptable threat to U.S. sovereignty, and would take health decisions out of the hands of American families. Click here to learn more and sign the petition telling our lawmakers to keep health at home.

  • WHO treaties that remove power from the US are dangerous to the health and welfare of Americans.
  • All health decisions need to stay as close to home as possible, including when an emergency exists. WHO does not have power over the health decisions yet but it will if the US agrees to a legally binding pandemic treaty.
The WHO Constitution states: “Informed opinion and active co-operation on the part of the public are of the utmost importance in the improvement of the health of the people.” Let’s hold them accountable to their word.
