Copper: Antibacterial/Antiviral Marvel

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:


Most people are familiar with silver as a powerful antibacterial agent. But few know that copper compounds and copper as a metal are equally powerful.

Copper kills all bacteria and viruses on contact. While I don’t recommend using copper on open wounds (because it produces high levels of free radicals), it can be used to prevent the transfer of infections from surfaces.

For example, it has been shown that copper doorknobs, countertops, and bed railings do not transfer infections, and kill all bacteria and viruses on contact. This prevents not only the spread of bacterial infections, but more importantly the spread of viruses such as the flu. Copper doorknobs and countertops, and copper coverings on other surfaces can reduce the transfer of infections.

Another place bacterial infections are transferred from person to person is mattresses and pillows. For example, studies have shown that hospital mattresses, no matter how well cleaned, still contain dangerous organisms that can be transferred between patients.

You can purchase copper-impregnated mattresses, pillowcases, and mattress covers to prevent such infections. The covers and pillows would be especially important to use in hotels, where you are sleeping on mattresses that come in contact with hundreds of people, and are rarely cleaned.

10 Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep

Even though you may never have thought about the necessity of getting a full night’s sleep when it comes to protecting your health, the evidence is clear that fulfilling your daily sleep requirement is as important as the other steps you take to protect your heart.

If you are one of the growing number of people with sleep problems, here are 10 good sleep habits to get into:

  • Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day. The body likes predictability.
  • Turn off the computer two hours before bedtime, and don’t watch TV in bed.
  • If you suspect money or relationship issues are keeping you up at night, consider counseling or confiding in your pastor to help alleviate such stress.
  • Use a book, not a tablet, for reading. Studies show that backlit screens, like those on an iPad or other tablets, can disrupt your natural body clock.
  • Don’t eat or drink anything that contains caffeine after noon. This includes coffee, of course, but other drinks and foods can contain this stimulant as well, including tea, chocolate, energy drinks, and some sodas.
  • Darken the room completely.
  • Don’t go to sleep on a full stomach.
  • Get regular exercise; it promotes sleep.
  • Avoid alcohol at night. Even if you think it helps you get to sleep, drinking alcohol increases the odds of awakening.
  • Follow a nighttime ritual. Brush and floss your teeth, turn down the bed, take a hot bath, listen to relaxing music. Establish a pleasurable routine and stick to it.
If you are still having sleep problems, don’t cover them up with a sleeping pill. Get to the root of the problem and get the good night’s sleep you deserve.

The study found that those who ate cruciferous vegetables had a significant reduction in blood pressure, especially during the day, compared to those who ate root and squash vegetables. Plus, their triglyceride levels were also lower. (More)

The link between diabetes and Alzheimer’s:
