Refined Carbs May Increase Inflammation & Heart Risk

When it comes to heart health, many experts point to cholesterol as the culprit. Yet, chronic inflammation also contributes to heart risk by damaging blood vessels, leading to atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of the arteries), which can restrict blood flow and increase the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes. Plus, it can destabilize plaques in the arteries, making them more prone to clotting or rupturing.

A recent study published in the journal Nutrients has found that eating refined carbs can contribute to inflammation and cardiovascular disease. For this study, researchers recruited 3,042 participants in Greece (40% male and 32% female), following them for 20 years and tracking their lifestyle habits. During the study, 36% of participants experienced a cardiovascular event, including 71.7% with coronary artery disease, 4.3% with stroke, and 24% with other heart conditions such as heart failure.

All participants who experienced a heart event had elevated inflammatory markers. While carbohydrate volume alone wasn’t the sole culprit, those who ate a high-carb, low-fiber diet were much more likely to experience a cardiovascular event than those eating a high-carbohydrate, high-fiber diet. These study findings underscore the importance of eating high-quality carbohydrates that are rich in fiber to keep inflammation at bay.

For Anxiety Relief, Exercise Beats Meditation & Social Support

If you experience anxiety, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that about 31% of US adults will experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives. Left untreated, those persistent feelings of fear and worry can have a significant impact on daily living, sleep, and overall well-being. The good news is that exercise is a powerful way to relieve anxiety.

In a recent study published in PLOS One, researchers examined data from 8,818 participants in two surveys taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. They looked at three anxiety-relieving strategies: exercise, communication with family and friends, and meditation. Exercise was most beneficial, with 24.4% of exercisers in the first survey and 19% in the second survey saying they didn’t experience moderate to severe anxiety, compared to 17% and 12% for non-exercisers.

Interacting with family and friends was also beneficial, with 19.9% less likely to report moderate to severe anxiety in the first survey and 18.3% in the second survey. Yet, meditation was far less effective, with 24% of meditators experiencing moderate to severe anxiety and just 16.5% experiencing no anxiety.

A Healthy Gut Can Help You Manage Stress

The relationship between your brain and gut may be much stronger than you’d think. A new study out of UCLA suggests that people who are more resilient in the face of stress have less inflammation in their gut microbiome. This relationship works both ways, as various psychological conditions can cause poor eating habits, which inflame the gut microbiome and limit the production of helpful neurotransmitters. (More)

Second-Hand Smoke May Increase Breast Cancer Risk

Breast cancer causes millions of deaths every year. Doctors recommend certain lifestyle changes, such as more physical activity and less alcohol consumption, to mitigate the risks. However, a recent analysis suggests that there is a new risk factor to be wary of. What experts have found is that long-term exposure to second-hand smoke can increase the risk of breast cancer by 24% in women who don’t smoke. (More)

Why a Heat Wave Can Affect Your Mental Health

You know that high temperatures can cause heatstroke and heat exhaustion. However, did you know hot temperatures can affect your mental health, impacting your sleep, memory, mood, and reaction time? These symptoms can be worse for those with depression or schizophrenia. While scientists haven’t identified the exact reason why heat impacts our mood, some experts say it may have an impact on our brain function. (More)

Iodine: The Key to Gland Health

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

I’ve been studying iodine for decades. It is an essential element that we cannot live without, a fascinating substance that does not get enough attention from either conventional or holistic physicians. If I was limited to just one nutrient for the treatment of patients, I would choose iodine.

Iodine is concentrated in glandular tissues. The highest concentration occurs in the thyroid gland. However, all the tissues and the cells of the body require iodine for optimal function.

Special: Dr. Brownstein: Your Tiny Thyroid Causing Big Problems

Glands use energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to ensure iodine is concentrated inside them. The reason for this is that glands cannot produce any hormone without an adequate supply of iodine.

Most people associate iodine with the thyroid gland, but it is also required by the ovaries, breasts, testicles, and adrenal glands to produce their hormones. Animal, human, and test-tube studies have shown that adequate iodine levels are required to promote the normal architecture of glands. In other words, if iodine is deficient, it sets in motion a pathological change resulting in disrupted structure of the glandular tissues. But if there is enough iodine in the glands, they will resemble healthy, normal tissue.

When I talk to physicians about iodine, I go into great detail about how its deficiency will result in the abnormal formation of glandular tissues. My hypothesis is that the reason why one in seven women has breast cancer and one in three men has prostate cancer — along with the rapid rise in other glandular cancers — is, in large part, because of iodine deficiency.

Iodine deficiency sets in motion a pathological process from which cysts are formed in the glandular tissue. If the deficiency continues, the cysts become hard and nodular. Later, the nodules can assume a hyperplastic appearance under a microscope. That is a precancerous condition.

If iodine deficiency continues over an even longer period, cancer can develop.

This mechanism could explain why we are seeing so many glandular cancers. Iodine levels have fallen so far that most Americans are deficient. In fact, studies from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) reveal that nearly 60% of women of childbearing age are iodine-deficient.

I have been testing iodine levels in patients for more than 20 years, and I can assure you that it’s not just women who are deficient. More than 97% of the 7,000+ patients I have tested showed low levels — most significantly low.

Whether it’s you or someone you love...
There’s a whirlwind of emotions that comes with any breast cancer diagnosis.
But it doesn’t have to feel like a punishment.
I had a scare last year that thankfully turned out to be nothing severe—but now I understand the complexities of what women go through with a diagnosis like that.
And as you can imagine, I did a lot of digging at the time.
What I quickly realized was that there are a LOT of myths going around out there—especially when it comes to mammograms, certain lab screens, and the causes of breast cancer itself.
I also uncovered some of the hidden solutions that many women may not even be aware of.
Things like helpful foods, supplements, and even hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after cancer.
Now I know there's a lot of skepticism around certain solutions.
But you'd be surprised by how powerful a functional medicine approach can be as both a preventative AND a treatment.
And with how hard it can be to find reliable answers these days...
I knew I had to get this information into your hands!
So this week, I invited one of the top Integrative Oncologists and breast cancer experts, Dr. Jenn Simmons, onto my podcast to give you the facts.
Jenn takes a slightly unconventional approach:
She’s helped thousands of women see their breast cancer diagnosis as an opportunity to reclaim their health—and she’s here today to explain how it works.
PLUS, she’s going to debunk the myth that hormone replacement after breast cancer can cause recurrence.
Because it's actually been proven to help women live better for longer!

In this must-hear episode, you’ll discover:

  • How to cope with hormonal symptoms if you have breast cancer
  • The correlation between stress and developing breast cancer
  • What to look for in breast cancer screenings & all about QT scans
  • Inflammatory lab markers and tests for breast cancer screening
  • How hormone replacement after breast cancer is beneficial
  • Ways to apply functional medicine to your breast cancer diagnosis
  • And more...

We all know that high-quality olive oil has massive health benefits. So I decided to do an experiment on myself and consume at least a couple of shots (2-4 Tablespoons) of high quality olive oil every day.

Here are some of the things I noticed:

  1. Less hunger—Since olive oil is a healthy fat, consuming olive oil stops hunger pangs. But olive oil is a type of fat, and it seems it would cause weight gain. On the contrary, I lost a few pounds the first two weeks of consuming olive oil. And when you look at the research, studies show that people who consumed at least 2T of olive oil a day lost more body fat than those eating similar calories and no olive oil.
  2. Lower blood sugar—Along with less hunger, olive oil helps to lower blood sugar levels, helping to prevent type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. When blood sugar and insulin are lower, you are less likely to be hungry or to store calories as fat. Olive oil also reduces ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates hunger.
  3. Less aches, pains, and inflammation—Fresh EVOO contains a compound called oleocanthal which has an anti-inflammatory effect like ibuprofen—without the negative side effects. A study from Spain showed that men and women over the age of 55 who consumed olive oil for one month had decreased blood markers for inflammation, especially IFN-y and CXCL1.
  4. Smoother skin—Olive oil is anti-inflammatory, and this is reflected in smoother skin, less sun damage, and reduction of any redness or irritation. The antioxidants in olive oil help prevent aging of the skin, as well as fighting skin cancer. The antibacterial component of olive oil also helps to fight acne and other skin infections. Olive oil applied directly to the skin also works great as an excellent moisturizer and wrinkle fighter.
  5. Improved memory—My thinking was quicker, my focus improved, and my memory was sharper. Olive oil consumption has been shown to have positive effects on cognitive performance. Studies on olive oil consumption show slowed cognitive decline, and decreases in blood markers for Alzheimer’s disease, including amyloid beta proteins, tau, and p-tau.
  6. Improved Cholesterol—While my cholesterol levels are very good, I noticed that total cholesterol numbers dropped, along with lower levels of LDL, and triglycerides—both of which are tied to heart disease. In addition, HDL (our good cholesterol) increased. In a meta-analysis of 27 different trials with olive oil, it was found that HDL increases significantly, while LDL and triglycerides are lowered. All good for heart health and longevity.
  7. Better Digestion and Healthier Microbiome—Olive oil has a lot of gut health benefits. It nourishes beneficial bacteria and helps heal the gut lining. Research shows it relieves gut irritation including bloating and constipation. Certain healthy gut bacteria have positive effects on lowering cholesterol and fat loss, as well as increasing feelings of fullness.
Olive oils’ polyphenols can prevent other serious health issues. Olive oil is effective for its anti-inflammatory whole-body effects, its ability to fight and kill cancer cells, reverse fatty liver disease, protect the kidneys, and promote healthy brain and nerve function. Olive oil is effective for heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and to prevent or fight many cancers.

Olive oil is truly a powerful superfood and should be included in your diet on a regular basis. While I don’t know if I will continue to have a couple ‘shots’ of olive oil every day, I do know I will be adding generous amounts to my vegetables, salads, soups, and main dishes.

Be sure to look for “Extra Virgin, Cold Pressed” olive oil, and check the bottling date to see how fresh it is. Look for olive oil that comes in a dark tinted GLASS bottle. Avoid plastic or clear bottles. Higher quality olive oil full of polyphenols should have a rich, fruity taste and stings your throat when swallowed—this is a reflection of the amount and quality of the polyphenols it contains.

Only 8% of Early Dementia Cases May Be Diagnosed
The earliest signs of Alzheimer’s disease can include mild cognitive impairment (MCI) where someone has short-term memory issues yet can still function independently. If MCI is identified early, its progression can often be slowed with the use of medications that may slow the development of amyloid proteins in the brain which can lead to Alzheimer’s.
Yet, what researchers have found is that many cases of MCI go undiagnosed until it’s too late. In a study, researchers looked at data from 226,756 primary care providers and 54,597 medical practices with at least 25 patients 65 and older who were enrolled in two different Medicare plans between 2017 and 2019.
The researchers found that only 8% of expected cases of MCI were diagnosed amongst both medical practices and clinicians on average. The researchers note that this low rate of diagnosis may be due to the lack of time providers have to spend with patients, as well as limited training in spotting symptoms of MCI. This underscores the importance of family and friends in spotting changes in a loved one’s cognitive functioning and bringing it to a provider’s attention.

Millions of Homes Unknowingly Contain Lead
Lead is a harmful neurotoxin. While its use in paint and pipes was curtailed in the late 1970s, harmful levels of lead remain in our environment. Experts say lead continues to leach from old pipes and paints, with some research suggesting that nearly 5.5 million adults have died from complications caused by lead in recent years.
Health physicist Aaron Specht from Purdue University says, “This preventable health crisis especially threatens children during periods of critical brain development but can also impair intellectual development and long-term health in adults.” He says lead enters our bodies through ingestion, absorption, or inhalation and once inside it binds to proteins and enzymes where it replaces calcium causing irreparable damage.
Specht says a simple screening by your doctor can help to test and monitor your blood levels of lead, although repeat tests may be necessary since blood levels can shift quickly after exposure. If you suspect you’ve been exposed to lead, you can ask your doctor to order this blood test. Also, if you live in an older home, it’s important to get your paint and pipes tested for lead. Plus, here are more ways to mitigate your risk.

LIFESTYLE MEDICINE

30 minutes a day may just keep cancer at bay

mail
Ladies, want to supercharge your body's defense against breast cancer? Finnish scientists have discovered a simple yet powerful weapon: your exercise bike.

In the study which involved 20 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, researchers found that just 30 minutes of cycling unleashed an army of cancer-fighting cells in the bloodstream. The best part? While cancer-killing cells increased, the number of cancer-promoting cells remained unchanged or even decreased.

Fascinatingly, tumor size and breast cancer type influenced the exercise response.

While more research is needed, one thing's certain: staying active is a slam dunk for cancer patients. So, whether you're battling the Big C or just want to keep it at bay, it might be time to dust off that exercise bike.

NUTRITION FACTS

A tart remedy against UTI

mail
Has science finally caught up with what our parents or grandparents have been recommending all these years?

A new study highlights cranberry juice as a promising non-drug intervention for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Researchers used a network meta-analysis involving 20 trials with 3,091 participants to compare different treatments. They looked at multiple studies to see how various interventions stack up against each other.

Results showed cranberry juice consumption reduces UTI rates by 54% compared to no treatment and 27% compared to placebo. Notably, it decreases antibiotic use by 59%, significantly alleviating UTI symptoms. This method is found to be more effective than simply increasing fluid intake or taking cranberry tablets.

In a world with increasing antibiotic resistance, incorporating cranberry juice into daily routines could be a simple yet impactful public health measure to combat UTIs.
