6 Surprising Benefits of Beta Glucan
While insoluble fiber often steals the spotlight for its role in digestion, soluble fiber—especially beta glucan—deserves much more recognition. Found in foods like oats, barley, rye, shiitake mushrooms, and yeast, beta glucan doesn’t break down in your gut. Instead, it forms a gel-like substance that slows digestion and offers a range of health benefits. Research shows beta glucan can boost your immune system, lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar levels, support healthy bones, and even aid in weight loss. Yet, despite these impressive benefits, most people are getting just a fraction of the beta glucan they need. (More)
Is It a Concussion? Watch for This Little-Known Symptom
If you’ve ever hit your head and wondered if it may be a concussion, you’re not alone—signs of a concussion are often invisible. Yet, a recent study has found that a spontaneous headshake (SHAAKE) after an impact may be a reliable predictor. When researchers looked at 347 athletes with head injuries, they found that 85% of those who spontaneously shook their head after their injury had a concussion. Plus, the results showed that SHAAKE could help detect concussions with a 92% accuracy rate in football players. Recognizing this sign in yourself or someone you love can be an important reminder to seek medical attention after any head injury. (More)
5 Minutes of This May Lower Your Blood Pressure
You know that exercise is important for your health and your heart. Now, a recent study found that even small amounts of exercise, such as an extra 5 minutes of cycling or running, were linked to a meaningful reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. While longer exercise sessions typically result in greater reductions, these small changes still offer health benefits. So, if you're short on time, tacking on a few extra minutes of activity could make a real difference in your heart health. Gut Microbiome May Influence How We Handle Stress

Can you trust your gut?

UCLA researchers have shown that people who rank high in resilience — meaning, they accept change positively and follow their instincts — have the bacteria living in their bellies in part to thank for it.

Their new study looked at the brains and gut microbiomes of people who cope effectively with different types of stress, including social isolation and discrimination. Finding ways to prevent stress can help prevent heart disease, stroke, obesity, and diabetes, researchers explained.

Special: Doctors Offer New Hope for Immune Health, Stable Mood, and Overall Well-Being

"If we can identify what a healthy, resilient brain and microbiome look like, then we can develop targeted interventions to those areas to reduce stress," said senior study author Arpana Gupta, co-director of the UCLA Goodman-Luskin Microbiome Center.

For the study, Gupta's team surveyed 116 people about their resiliency and divided them into two groups — one ranked high in resilience, the other ranked low. Participants gave stool samples and underwent MRI brain scans.

The study found that folks who were highly resilient had brain activity in regions associated with emotional regulation and better thinking skills than the group with low resilience.

"When a stressor happens, often we go to this aroused fight-or-flight response, and this impairs the brakes in your brain," Gupta said in a UCLA news release.

"The highly resilient individuals in the study were found to be better at regulating their emotions, less likely to catastrophize, and keep a level head," added first author Desiree Delgadillo, a postdoctoral researcher at UCLA.

In addition to brain differences, something unique was going on in their guts.

Their gut microbes excreted chemicals and exhibited gene activity tied to low levels of inflammation and a strong gut barrier. Inflammation causes what's known as a "leaky gut," which impairs the body's ability to absorb needed nutrients and block toxins.

Researchers were surprised to find these microbiome traits in the highly resilient participants.

"Resilience truly is a whole-body phenomenon that not only affects your brain but also your microbiome and what metabolites . . . it is producing," Gupta said.

The findings were published in the journal Nature Mental Health.

The next step is to investigate whether an intervention to boost resilience will change activity in the brain and gut.

"We could have treatments that target both the brain and the gut that can maybe one day prevent disease," Gupta said.

Jimi, here’s something interesting you might not know: humans are hard-wired to avoid pain.

The term “pain” can be used for a number of things—everything from uncontrollable stress to anxiety to physical pain—but the end result is the same.

When we live with pain, our quality of life decreases. It’s ingrained in us to avoid pain as much as possible, and in so doing, increasing our quality of life and extend our lifespans.

Pain can be a sign of serious problems and may signal a decreased longevity. One study found some interesting facts about pain:

“Pain…can have adverse effects that can lead to continuing pain and comorbidity. Pain sensitivity itself can set in motion inflammatory responses that themselves result in pain.”

For an example of how significantly pain can impact our quality of life, the study explains: “A 55-year-old female pain-free will live 22% of her remaining life with severe pain, while a similarly aged female with severe pain will live the remaining 36% of her life in severe pain. By age 90, this percentage decreases to 15% for pain-free women but increases to 53% for women with severe pain.”

The study sums up by saying, “While pain is only moderately associated with quantity of life, it is more substantially and importantly associated with quality of life. In a sense, pain begets pain.”

Those who’ve lived with acute or chronic pain, whether from injuries or disease, know just how much it can impact your quality of life. Everything becomes more difficult, from basic activities of daily life to higher-function tasks.

But what’s fascinating is that not everyone experiences pain the same way.

A new study out of the University of California San Diego found that pain is experienced and relieved differently in men and women.

In the study, nearly 100 participants (many of whom suffered from lower back pain) took part in a program that involved meditation and the use of either painkillers or a placebo.

While the study focused on the pain-reducing effects of meditation (which proved effective in both sexes), the difference in the medication’s effects was surprising.

Men who took painkillers (naloxone, in this case) saw a decrease in the pain-reducing effects of meditation, while women saw an increase. This suggests that men experience more effective pain relief from opioids (due to endogenous responses) and pain-relieving medications, while women rely on non-opioid mechanisms in order to combat pain.

What this study did is highlighted the importance of sex-specific pain therapies—aka, different therapies used to treat men and women—because of the differences in the way their bodies responded to both drugs and meditation.

And this means that you need to take the same approach to treating and managing your pain.

Men and women experience and manage pain differently, this study simply confirms what we’ve already known to be true. Simply taking a “one size fits all” approach isn’t the smart play.

How you address your pain—be it chronic or acute—should vary based on your unique physiology and how you have seen the best results in the past.

And make no mistake: the research supports the importance of addressing that pain in order to protect and preserve your quality of life.

If “pain begets pain”, the last thing you want is to just accept that certain pains—even minor pains—are acceptable. You could not only be reducing your quality of life, but also triggering further physiological issues, everything from inflammatory responses to greater stress placed on your body to elevated anxiety and depression risk.

For the sake of your long-term health, get help dealing with and managing your pain today!
Yours in good health,

Diabetes Cases Have Doubled: Protect Yourself

Diabetes rates have doubled worldwide in the last 30 years, according to new statistics published this week in The Lancet journal. The study authors note that this is the first global analysis of the number of diabetes cases and treatment rates that includes all countries.

And while the diabetes rates increased the most in poorer nations, richer countries were also affected by this chronic disease that occurs when the body can’t regulate blood sugar levels. In fact, the U.S. had the highest diabetes rates of wealthy countries, with 11.4% of women and 13.6% of men diagnosed with the disease.

Special: Unlock the Secrets to Reversing Diabetes

About 38 million Americans, that’s 1 in 10 people, have diabetes. And 1 in 5 people don’t realize they have this dangerous condition, according to the American Diabetes Association.

Why the increase in diabetes?

Nutrition. A large factor in the rise of diabetes is nutrition, says Roger Seheult, M.D., a critical care physician, pulmonologist, and sleep physician at Optum California.

“We are eating a lot of processed foods. As we get up in age, and also get up in weight, this increases insulin resistance,” Seheult tells Newsmax’s “Newsline.” Insulin resistance occurs when your body does not respond appropriately to insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas to help manage blood glucose.

Exercise. Another significant factor in the rise of diabetes is the lack of exercise. “We're not doing as much exercise as we should be, and I'm not talking about going to the gym and getting a 24-hour fitness membership, but just going outside, doing gardening, cleaning up around the house,” says Seheult. “These are things that we can do to improve our chances of not getting diabetes.”

Water. Americans drink too many sugary beverages, says Seheult. A lot of things that we drink have sugar, and that directly causes insulin resistance, he says. “Water is a good thing to drink,” advises Seheult.

Sunlight. Seheult points out that because of industrialization in many of the countries hardest hit by diabetes, people are not getting outside and exposed to the sun. “There is emerging evidence that infrared light from the sun, it can be very beneficial,” explains Seheult. “We are inside 93% of the time, and the infrared light doesn't get in there.”

Seheult points out an easy way to remember these strategies for preventing diabetes. “Whether we're talking about Nutrition, Exercise, Water or Sunlight, by the way, that stands for N-E-W-S, like Newsmax . . . these are the things that can help,” stresses Seheult.

Hello Jimi,

Despite decades of reported cases, very little is known about Morgellons disease, making it one of modern medicine's most enigmatic conditions. The medical literature remains sparse, and many healthcare providers are still unfamiliar with its true physical nature.

Once thought to be a delusional disorder, Morgellons disease has emerged as a complex physical condition that can present as unusual fibers embedded in skin lesions. Research has now established clear links between Morgellons and several infectious agents, particularly Borrelia burgdorferi.
In the final episode of Season 1 of Gordon Medical FORUM, Dr. Nafysa Parpia and Dr. Eboni Cornish help unravel the intricate connections between Morgellons and various triggers - from Lyme disease and H-pylori to environmental factors like mold exposure and metal toxicity as well as how COVID is adding another layer of complexity to this condition.
Episode highlights:
  • Understanding the link between Morgellons and Lyme disease
  • Identifying populations at higher risk for Morgellons
  • Diagnostic criteria of Morgellons disease
  • Environmental triggers: The impact of mold, mycotoxins, and metal exposure
  • Morgellons symptoms that overlap with other chronic conditions
  • How gut health and toxicity influence Morgellons manifestation
  • The connection between oral health and Morgellons symptoms
  • Treatment approaches and management strategies

Thank you for joining us for the first season of Gordon Medical FORUM! We'll return in January with new episodes. Have a topic suggestion? Simply reply to this message to share your ideas with us.

Environmental Toxins and Nutrient Absorption
Yvonne Sorenson, PA-C
If you have ever felt like you are taking all of the right supplements and eating all of the right foods, and yet your symptoms are not improving, your gut may not be the only system that is out of balance.

Nutrient absorption is often thought to be a small intestine issue. Conditions like leaky gut, SIBO, and Celiac are discussed as primary drivers of these symptoms, but we must not forget the possibility of environmental influences that can affect our ability to obtain these vital nutrients.

An overabundance of toxins in your system can block receptor sites on your cells that absorb the crucial nutrients our body needs to function optimally. They do this by binding to the receptor sites and, therefore, “tricking” the body into thinking a nutrient, hormone, or other element is more present than it truly is.

Skin Cells Control Diabetes in Mice

By Chauncey Crandall, M.D.

Scientists have created genetically altered skin cells that may control Type 2 diabetes in lab mice. And they believe the general concept could someday be used to treat various diseases.

Special: Reversing Diabetes Is Possible...

Using a combination of stem cells and "gene editing," the researchers created patches of skin cells that were able to release a hormone called GLP-1 in a controlled manner. The hormone, which is normally produced in the digestive tract, spurs the production of insulin — the body's key regulator of blood sugar levels.

The scientists found that transplanting the engineered skin patches onto diabetic lab mice helped regulate their blood sugar levels over four months.

Xiaoyang Wu, a stem cell biologist at the University of Chicago, led the "proof of concept" study. He said it raises the possibility that "therapeutic skin grafts" could be used to treat a range of diseases — from hemophilia to drug dependence.

How is your sleep?

When I interviewed performance expert Greg G. Wells, PhD for the Eat4Earth series, I asked him what he thought was the #1 determinant of health among food, exercise, and sleep.
He said it was sleep.
According to Zach Bush, MD (who I interviewed twice for Eat4Earth), most Americans are carrying around a 20,000 hour sleep debt by age 40.
Sleep debt has become so pervasive that the World Health Organization declared a sleep deprivation epidemic in developed countries.
So a while back I wrote the article, "23 Potential Causes of Poor Sleep Most People Have Never Considered."
Obviously, sleep debt can accrue by not sleeping long enough, but it can also add up by not sleeping well, not spending enough time in the various stages of sleep.
And it is possible to be unaware of poor sleep quality. Many people wake up multiple times per night without realizing it and don't spend enough time in deep sleep.
And the consequences are much greater than most people realize.
Sleep debt degrades key regulators of health, such as ...
  • Microbiome diversity
  • Gut membrane integrity
  • Hormone production and balance
  • Detoxification
  • Immune system competence and balance
  • Insulin sensitivity
The long-term consequences of sleep debt include the main health challenges we all want to avoid, such as ...
  1. Hormone deficiencies and dysregulation
  2. Obesity
  3. Diabetes
  4. Heart problems, including heart attack

Sleep could be considered the mother of all health influences.
It's absolutely essential to master sleep if you want to be healthy.
By the way, good sleep is also a key to healthy eating and exercise.
Inadequate sleep makes it more difficult to maintain a healthy diet because sleep debt increases cravings for sugary and processed foods.
It also reduces the ability and desire to exercise.
Sleep issues are a big cause of unwanted weight gain via these obvious mechanisms and also via less obvious factors induced by sleep debt, like gut dysbiosis and inflammation.
Often people can start shedding extra fat just by improving their sleep.
Since I have dealt with sleep issues off and on during my health journey and now help people with their sleep challenges, I created a list of contributors to sleep problems that I continue to develop as I learn more.
Most of this is covered in the article, "23 Potential Causes of Poor Sleep Most People Have Never Considered."
Because sleep is so important, I was thinking about writing an email series about it or adding more to the article above.
If this topic interests you, reply to this email with the word "interested".
If you have questions about sleep, reply to this email with your questions, and I will try to answer them.
By the way, one of the biggest factors affecting sleep is gut health.
If you have gut health issues, be sure to check out the next section of this email below.

Bayer has been dogged in recent years by massive litigation issues linked to the Roundup weedkiller, a problem it inherited in the 2018 takeover of US firm Monsanto.

We found unhealthy pesticide levels in 20% of US produce – here’s what you need to know

To get a sense of the current situation, Consumer Reports recently conducted their most comprehensive review ever of pesticides in food. To do it, they analyzed seven years of data from the US Department of Agriculture, which each year tests a selection of conventional and organic produce grown in or imported to the US for pesticide residues. They looked at 59 common fruits and vegetables, including, in some cases, not just fresh versions but also canned, dried or frozen ones. New results continue to raise red flags. Learn more here. Cancer Risk from Pesticides Equivalent to Smoking - New US Study
In a populational US-wide study that considered not only farmers who actively use pesticides but communities as a whole, researchers contextualized cancer risk associated with pesticide use and smoking. They found that living in an environment heavily exposed to pesticides could increase the incidence of cancer as much as smoking, Frontiers reported.
“In our study we found that for some cancers, the effect of agricultural pesticide usage is comparable in magnitude to the effect of smoking,” said the study’s senior author, Dr Isain Zapata, associate professor at the Rocky Vista University, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Colorado. Mexico's Sheinbaum to present constitutional safeguard for non-GMO corn in coming days
At a recent press conference Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum said, "We have an obligation to ensure that the white corn cultivated in Mexico is not genetically-modified. This will be in the constitution as this is the best defense we have for biodiversity as well as for our health."
The country has more than 60 native varieties of corn, a key ingredient in Mexican cuisine that was domesticated by indigenous people over thousands of years and has an important symbolic value dating back to pre-Hispanic cultures. Sheinbaum said it was also important to safeguard the quality of seeds being used by farmers to protect the local agricultural capacity. Read more here.

Pesticide-related PAC money surges into state legislatures

"RFK Jr. is Responsible for Measles Deaths in Samoa." - False
Reality: The decline in vaccination rates in Samoa began years before Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s 2019 visit and was influenced by various factors, including a tragic vaccine mix-up in 2018. The measles outbreak in Samoa was part of a global surge in cases, and attributing it solely to Kennedy ignores the broader context and complexities involved.
