Hey Jimi,

Dr. Elisa Song is someone I've followed for a long time and admired from a distance - but I'd never personally met or been connected to her in any way. I was actually a little nervous to record this episode of our ongoing Wellness Optimization Series!

I've watched several interviews of hers over the years and she's always 100% on point with her clear, concise presentation of information and her personal experience and expertise. She's also a prolific creator of very high quality, high value content on her website, social media, etc...

As you may or may not know, we started the Wellness Optimization Series back in March when the pandemic situation first kicked off. It began as a series of informal conversations with some of my closest friends in the health industry to talk about various aspects of what was happening, what did we know, what actions could people take, etc...

How many times do people tell you to take a deep breath? If you take slow breaths and exhale longer than you inhale, you can cut hot flashes in half when done twice a day by 15 minutes! You can pace your breathing any time like when you're out driving or waiting in line at the grocery store.

Can Your Microwave Be Affecting Your Gut Health?

Until 1967, installing a microwave in your home kitchen was prohibitively expensive – in some cases, the tune of $11,000 in modern-day dollars.

In fact, the first viable models – created after researchers found corn on the cob would pop if it was even around the power tubes of radar sets (called magnetrons) – were designed for commercial use. Huge, lumbering contraptions for restaurants and airplanes, that weren’t meant for individual meals.

Now, they had the technology as early as the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair – one demonstration showed how a microwave oven could cook a full steak and potatoes meal.

But it wasn’t until they became affordable that cooking was revolutionized all over America.

And by the ‘70s, consumers had questions. After all, the secret phenomenon of microwaving was its use of radiation. Mostly, those kinks have been worked out (depending on who you ask) and there’s nothing inherently dangerous about using a microwave.​

With the in-home microwave came food companies eager to feed the glowing, whirring machine with microwavable meals, designed to reduce the busy homemaker’s daily stress and get dinner on the table with expediency.

The ‘80s and ‘90s saw even more advancements in microwavable meals, from TV dinners for kids to pre-packaged flavorless weight loss kits.

As the 2010s experienced a whole foods revolution of sorts, consumers have been encouraged to return to our organic human history and buy pesticide-free produce, or grow it ourselves.

Except we all have and use microwaves, and from time to time, buy frozen meals and nuke ‘em.

Could the toxins and chemicals used to preserve frozen meals have an affect on the microbial composition of our digestive tracts?

Let’s find out…

Prong One of a Two-Prong Problem

There are, effectively, two major concerns regarding your gut health when thinking about microwavable meals: the packaging and the additives.

We know that microplastics can seep from a tea bag into the tea leaves, leaving us ingesting those plastics. So why wouldn’t it be the same for microwaveable meals, wrapped in plastic, often microwaved in the plastic, with concentrated carcinogens leaching into your food?

Well, it turns out that it is the same. Microwavable meals that require you to heat the plastic, or even that are simply packaged in plastic, affect your digestive system with the same disorder as toxic plastic chemicals elsewhere – amplified by the fact that you’re heating the toxins and allowing them to release into the food.

As we know, loading the digestive tract down with toxins decreases the structural integrity of the intestinal lining, allows harmful bacteria to flourish, and hamstrings the functionality of the entire digestive process.​

There are competing schools of thought regarding the microwave’s effect on nutritional value:

  1. Exciting the water particles in your food is what cooks the food. Therefore, more nutrients can be saved this way than by traditional cooking, which conducts heat through the food and cooks it.
  2. The radiation involved in microwave cooking naturally lessens the presence of nutrients, and the high heat kills bacteria indiscriminately, meaning good die as well as bad.

But what isn’t up for debate is the nutritional value of microwave dinners.

What’s Hiding in Your TV Dinner

In order to increase the shelf-life of frozen dinners, a lot of preservatives and additives are involved.

Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, meant to increase the shelf life of foods. Sodium phosphate, for keeping meats tender for longer. Interesterified fat, as a frozen-food alternative to trans fats. Corn syrup, to keep things sweet. Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, to enhance flavor as food heats. Modified food starch, used as an emulsifier, to change food’s response to temperatures, and improve texture.

That’s just a small sampling of the preservatives used in frozen dinners.

Multiple studies tracking the effects of preservatives on the gut microbiome found that they not only inhibited the growth of positive bacteria – in some cases, they killed that bacteria.

In one study, they found that the microbial composition of the test group of mice shifted significantly during five weeks of the experiment, but by week nine, the function of the microbes had shifted to concentrate.

While more research is needed, we know that the process of ingesting preservatives is not natural, and forces microbes to change their behavior in the microbiome, or die.

Microwaves themselves – their radiation and heat – may not have an adverse effect on gut health, beyond burning off bacteria that may otherwise have been helpful.

But the plastic packaging of frozen meals and the preservatives required to keep them edible for longer don’t encourage healthful functionality in our guts.

If your life is busy enough that frozen meals would help you during busy weeks, make your own frozen meals on Sunday and heat them throughout the week!

For the sake of your gut, avoid those TV dinners.​

Removing Ovaries Raises Heart Risk: Study

The removal of both ovaries at the time of hysterectomy is linked with an increased risk of heart disease, cancer, and premature death.

A study conducted by U.K. researchers is the largest of its kind on the subject, and compared women treated for a benign, or non-malignant disease, who had both ovaries removed and those who had none removed.

The study — which appeared in the journal BMJ — found that women who had one or no ovaries removed were less likely to develop coronary artery disease or cancer after hysterectomy than those who had both ovaries removed.

Special: 3 Drug-Free Secrets to Reversing Clogged Arteries

The researchers also found that fewer women who retained one or both ovaries compared to those who had both removed died within the duration of the study — 0.6 percent compared to 1.01 percent.

Although removal of both ovaries protects against subsequent development of ovarian cancer, the researchers believe premenopausal women should be advised that this benefit comes at the cost of an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, other more common forms of cancer, and an overall higher mortality rate.

We ALL have roadblocks that prevent us from exercising. But, the most common reasons will turn into EXCUSES if we repeatedly use them.

The most common "reasons" for not exercising fall into three categories:

1) I don't have TIME (because of home, work, and other life obligations, etc)
2) It's TOO HARD! (therefore you don't like doing it and don't stick to it)
3) I DON'T KNOW what exercises or workout to do (leaving you feeling overwhelmed and confused)

My guess is you've said one, two, or all of these at one time or another. (I know I have.) If it’s only for a short period of time, they are reasons why you didn’t exercise. But if you continue using them, it becomes an excuse and now we must address them.

Here are three exercise strategies to help you overcome each of the most common reasons.

The Five-Minute Compromise
Exercise for five minutes, and if you don't feel like continuing, just stop. Most of the time you WILL keep going, but it’s completely fine if you stop... you allowed yourself that compromise. You could even experiment and raise the compromise to eight or 10 minutes.

But, do not criticize yourself if you stop!! That just adds more stress and stinking thinking.


List Your Favorite Fitness Activities
Do you like cardio and aerobic exercises like jogging, high intensity intervals, swimming, biking?

Maybe you like strength and resistance exercises (pushups, sit ups, bodyweight exercises, pullups, bodybuilding routines, using dumbbells, barbells, or elastic bands)?

How about playing sports or other skill based exercises like dancing or martial arts?

For optimal brain and cognitive function, a multi-modal fitness program that includes pieces of each area is ideal. The great news is you can choose which fitness activities you like the best from each type of exercise.


The 2-Minute Exercise Habit Hack
Making exercise a consistent, lifetime habit is making it desirable, not something you dread doing. If you feel like it's too hard, or you find yourself 'not sticking' to your routine, do this:

Break the entire process into the various pieces, everything leading up to and completing the workout or routine (from putting on your shoes to completing your run or walking out of the gym.)

Now, take the earliest, simplest task of that process, and just do that one task for a period of time. It might be a week, 10 days, or a couple weeks. task" And that task has to be two minutes or less.

And I'm talking a "stupid simple" task. For example, if you need to put on your shoes to perform your workout, put your shoes on, lace 'em up... and then take them off. Yes, you will continue to build on this by adding another 2-minute habit hack onto the first one, but not until you perform the first one for a period of time.

This strategy CREATES THE DESIRE FOR YOU TO WANT MORE, which leads to the exercise habit.
