Fall-Related Deaths Increasing

Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:


From 2007 to 2016, the number of U.S. elderly who died as the result of falls increased by 31%. From 2000 to 2006, there had been a 42% increase.

The 2018 CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report recommended healthcare professionals educate the elderly about fall protection, and take measures such as ensuring that walking areas are free of debris.

Vitamin A & Sleep​

In a previous email (Saturday, January 15th), I wrote about how taking too much Vitamin D relative to Vitamins A and K2 could create problems.
And there are additional reasons to pay attention to getting ehough Vitamin A when you supplement with Vitamin D, especially since increasing your intake of Vitamin D increases the "turnover" of Vitamin A. It "uses up" Vitamin A faster.
Vitamin A plays a critical role in regulating circadian rhythm and sleep.
Cells in the retina of our eyes responsible for setting our circadian rhythm, called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) contain a protein called melanopsin that communicates to our brain that it is daytime in response to blue light entering the eye.
A metabolite of Vitamin A is required for melanopsin to work and send signals to the brain in response to changes in blue light.
If you're practicing good sleep hygiene (e.g.. maintaining a consistent schedule of sufficient daytime sunlight exposure and eliminating blue light exposure for 2-4 hours before sleep, sleeping in a completely dark room, etc) ...
... but it's not working, then the melanopsin in your eyes may not be working optimally, and this could be due to suboptimal Vitamin A and/or zinc (Vitamin A uitlization is zinc-dependent).
A study showed that people with lower vitamin A status are more likely to have sleep disorders.
And each 0.63 umol/L (18 ug/dL) increase in serum retinol (Vitamin A) was associated with a 22% lower risk of sleep disorders.
Keep in mind that correlation does not mean causation, but this is in line with what we know about Vitamin A's role via melanopsin in supporting good sleep.
Standard symptoms of suboptimal Vitamin A status include dry or scratchy eyes, night blindness (seeing less well at night), or little bumps on your skin that look like goosebumps or acne (follicular hyperkeratosis).
But it's possible that suboptimal Vitamin A status could affect only your eyes and not generate other symptoms.
A way to test this would be to increase your intake of Vitamin A (e.g. from liver, egg yolks, full fat grass fed dairy) and/or Vitamin A precursors (e.g. from red orange yellow and green vegetables and fruits) to see if your sleep improves.
On one of his podcasts, Chris Masterjohn, PhD described how his good circadian rhythm habits were not making enough of a difference in his sleep until he increased his vitamin A intake to 50,000 IU/day for about two weeks, if I'm recalling correctly (can't find the podcast right now).
In another video, Chris showed how his genetics severely limited his abilty to convert carotenoids to retinol (Vitamin A), so that was a likely reason that he had to take extra measures to ensure adequate Vitamin A status.
So some people may need very high vitamin A intakes, at least for a short period in order to reboot their supply.
One reason for this is poor absorption from the gut as a result of disorders that cause fat malabsorption. Inflammation also reduces Vitamin A uptake.
Genetic variations in the enzymes that degrade vitamin A may also play a role as some variations may increase the rate of vitamin A degradation.

How to Maintain a Healthy Colon
Dr. David Brownstein, M.D., writes:

How can you make sure you have better bowel movements? The first step is to drink adequate amounts of water. I can’t stress that enough. There is no way you can have healthy bowels if you’re dehydrated.
To get enough water, simply take your weight in pounds and divide the number by two. That number is the minimum amount of water, in ounces, you need to drink every day.
Special: This Gut Health Secret Is Key to Your Body's Immune Challenges
A stool culture can help identify an overgrowth of bad bacteria, parasites, or yeast. It can also provide information on the amounts of healthy bacteria in the GI tract, and provide levels of inflammatory markers.
When I order stool cultures from patients, I have them sent to specialized laboratories that know how to properly handle and assess the specimens. I currently use Doctor’s Data or Genova Diagnostics. (I have no financial interests in either company.)
My experience with using hospital-based labs has not been good. Once the results are obtained, a plan can be developed to correct any dysbiosis (bacterial imbalance) in the gut. When the gut bacteria levels are restored to a more healthy state, other health problems usually improve.
Certain nutrients can be helpful for promoting a healthy gut. Although each person is a unique biochemical individual with his or her own needs, we can make a few general suggestions for better gut health.
Imbalances of gut flora can be improved, first of all, by taking good prebiotic and probiotic supplements, which provide nutrients for the normal flora as well as supplying the colon with healthy bacteria to repopulate it.
Vitamin C at a dose of 3,000 mg to 6,000 mg per day is also beneficial for gut flora and helps to relieve constipation. For those who are severely constipated, up to 10,000 mg per day of powdered buffered vitamin C along with 2,000 mg to 4,000 mg of magnesium may be required.
But be aware that too much vitamin C and magnesium can actually cause problems of their own. If you get loose stools with vitamin C or magnesium, simply lower the amount until the diarrhea resolves.
