Like I said though, today is a good ol’ fashioned interview with none other than Dr. Tony Jimenez of Hope4Cancer.

Dr. Tony is not only one of my all-time favorite integrative cancer practitioners, he’s one of my favorite humans as well. Very good guy, with a very big heart, that’s ALWAYS learning more about health and how to reverse disease.

We got into a ton of various aspects pertaining to photodynamic (light) therapy and cancer -

Does red light therapy benefit cancer cells or is it a good thing to use in active cancer and why? Why does he like near infrared saunas better than far? How do the new laser technologies coming out tie into what he does? What about sound?

Also got into several other areas including food & sugar, most notably his assertion that natural sugar is a left spinning molecule whereas processed is right spinning, and cancer only takes in right spin.

Provocative stuff!

Not Eating Meat Lowers Blood Pressure

It has been known for some time that people who eat vegetarian diets tend to have low blood pressure.

Factors such as diet, body weight, physical activity, and alcohol intake all play a role in the risk of developing high blood pressure. Dietary modifications, such as limiting salt, also have been effective for preventing and managing it.

Researchers from the national Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center in Osaka, Japan, analyzed seven clinical trials and 32 studies published from 1900 to 2013 in which participants ate a vegetarian diet and measured net differences in blood pressure.

In the 32 studies, eating a vegetarian diet was associated with a reduction in the average systolic (peak artery pressure) and diastolic (minimum artery pressure) blood pressure readings compared with those who ate both a plant and meat diet.

Doctors often recommend a multifaceted approach to lowering blood pressure, which includes losing weight, regular exercise, and limiting salt intake. Eating a plant-based diet is a powerful tool to add to these measures.

Antibiotics Hike Heart Risks

Dr. Chauncey Crandall, M.D., writes:


Azithromycin is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics on the market. Most people know it by the name Z-Pak.

Millions of people have taken Z-Pak, which offers quick relief for patients dealing with bacterial infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, as well as infections of the ears, lungs, and other organs. It also acts against malaria and sexually transmitted diseases.

Z-Pak is so important that it’s on the World Health Organization’s list of essential drugs.

But as beneficial as is this antibiotic, it can spell trouble for some. In 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that Z-Pak can increase the risk of a fatal irregular heartbeat in people with heart disease. This warning was only for people with heart problems, but I prefer that all my patients steer clear of this drug.

There are safer options, like amoxicillin.

Another type of antibiotic called macrolides (erythromycin, clarithromycin) can cause blood pressure to fall too low if people who are on high blood pressure medication use them.

A Canadian study looked at people age 66 and older who were taking a calcium channel blocker, which is often used to treat high blood pressure. The researchers identified 7,100 patients hospitalized for low blood pressure or shock while taking a calcium channel blocker.

Treatment with erythromycin increased the risk of low blood pressure almost six times, while clarithromycin increased the risk almost fourfold.

So, if you are taking a calcium channel blocker and you are prescribed an antibiotic, make sure to tell your doctor.

How to Determine Your Healthy Weight

Forty-one-year-old comedian Kevin Hart is 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs 141 pounds. But he doesn't seem to be overweight.

That's because a healthy weight depends on age, muscle-fat ratio, height, sex, and body fat distribution.

People who are more athletic and muscled may have a higher body mass index (BMI), but not have excess body fat.

Hart's BMI actually registers as overweight (the normal weight range for his height is 101 to 136 pounds). But his level of body fat is 15.8% (that's good), indicating it's likely he has a healthy distribution of muscle and fat.

How can you figure out the right weight for your optimal health? The best way is to use several measurements to see if they reinforce the others’ findings.

• Figure your BMI at CDC.gov; search for "adult BMI calculator." Or try the Smart BMI Calculator, which considers your gender and age along with weight and height at smartbmicalculator.com.

• Determine your waist to hip ratio: Measure your waist at its narrowest part and divide that number by a measurement of your hips at their widest part. Below 0.9 equals low risk of cardiovascular health problems; 0.9 to 0.99 equals moderate risk; 1.0 or more equals high risk. Moderate or high risk may indicate you're overweight.

• Calculate your waist to height ratio. Divide waist size by height in inches. Are you 0.5 or less? Chances are you're a healthy weight.

• Ask your doctor for a body fat assessment using a pinch test. Fit non-athletes come in at 14% to 17% for men and 21% to 24% for women.

Sugar and Your Brain

Sugar harms not only your heart, it may also be poison for your brain. Researchers are learning that sugar clouds thinking, not only in the short term, but in the long term as well.

For instance, they found that people age 70 and older who consumed excess sugar had four times the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment, a precursor to dementia. But those who ate a balanced healthy diet were at lesser risk, according to the study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association looked at exactly how much sugar Americans are consuming, and the results were alarming.

Previous studies had linked high-sugar diets with increased risks for non-fatal heart problems, as well as with obesity, which can lead to heart trouble. But in this study, researchers from the CDC delved further to find out what eating moderate amounts of sugar did to the heart.

They examined the dietary habits and health of more than 30,000 Americans over 15 years and found that consuming even a moderate amount of sugar translates into a higher rate of death from cardiovascular disease.
