Testosterone Therapy May Threaten Heart

Taking testosterone might sound like a good idea for older men, but a recent study suggests that men who took it showed a slightly increased risk of heart attack and stroke in the first few years.

"Our findings show that the use [of testosterone therapy] was associated with an increased risk of stroke, TIAs [mini-strokes], or cardiac arrest during the first two years of use," said study author Dr. Christel Renoux of McGill University in Montreal.

"We strongly recommend that clinicians proceed with caution when considering prescribing [testosterone therapy] and first discuss both the potential benefits and risks with patients."

The team analyzed data from about 15,400 British men, ages 45 and older, with age-related low testosterone levels. Those who took testosterone replacement therapy had a 21% higher risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or mini-stroke than those who did not take the therapy, a risk that translated into 128 more cardiovascular events.

However, this increased risk declined after two years of testosterone treatment, according to the study published in The American Journal of Medicine.

While reported rates of low testosterone have remained stable, prescriptions for testosterone replacement therapy have soared for more than two decades. Increasingly, testosterone replacement therapy is prescribed to treat general symptoms of aging, including fatigue and slight declines in sexual functioning.

I’d just turned 40 and knew I had an increased risk of all the same chronic diseases and was terrified I was headed down the same path. I was already experiencing brain fog! I wanted to be around for my kids & family and didn’t want them to go through what I did with my Dad.

I started reading all the books and science-based research I could get my hands on to find out what I could do to prevent these chronic diseases and what I found was eye-opening.

Dr. Michael Greger, Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr. John McDougall, and so many others were citing hundreds of research studies and coming to the same conclusion:

That a Whole Food Plant Based diet can prevent (and even REVERSE in many cases) most all of our lifestyle related diseases.

And that 90-95% of all these chronic diseases are completely preventable.
Only 5-10% are actually due to genes. This includes Alzheimer’s, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune disorders, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, asthma, allergies, and so many more.

The #1 lifestyle factor contributing to these chronic diseases is diet. Specifically, the Standard American Diet or “SAD” - a diet based on animal products & processed foods.

Even thousands of years ago people knew the answer, but somehow we forgot - “Let food be thy medicine & thy medicine be thy food.” - Hippocrates

This science-backed research gave me so much hope that I could make a huge impact on my health. It was powerful and liberating, but at the same time I was still hesitant because I had failed in the past.

I decided I would focus on turning our favorite recipes into whole food plant based versions and not worry about being perfect.

“Progress not perfection” was my new motto. If I had a bad day, I wasn’t going to beat myself up. If I could be at least 90% whole food plant based like the “Blue Zones” then I knew I was going to make a big difference in my health & longevity.

Within just a few months, my “brain fog” lifted, I slept better, I had more energy, and I’d lost 20 pounds & 17 inches.

I finally felt like I'd cracked the code of making whole food plant based simple & easy so I didn’t have to spend all my time in the kitchen.

5 Ways to Enhance Your Memory

"Right now," said Steven Wright, "I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before." And while it's true that youngsters do forget names, math facts, and when Dad said to be home, many folks 50 and older notice that their recall (what year did we go to California?) isn't what it used to be.

Special: Brain Doctor's Secret Weapon for 'Shrinkage'

When you have such a senior moment, it's just a stutter in what's called episodic memory, and rarely is it long-lasting. But if you're concerned about your recall, talk to your doc about stress, sleep problems, depression, thyroid disease, diabetes, vitamin B-12 deficiency, excess alcohol use, infections, and your medications. They're all possible memory-busters. And try our unforgettable, brain-boosting tips!

1. Walk fast for at least 30 minutes daily, heading for 10,000 steps a day. Any exercise, but especially aerobics that make you sweat, is the very best memory enhancer.

2. Cut body-wide inflammation with omega-3 DHA from salmon or ocean trout; and take 900 mg of DHA from algal oil daily. Add in more omega-3s: walnuts, canola, and extra-virgin olive oil.

3. Try the spice turmeric to reduce triglyceride levels, increase fat burning, and keep blood sugar steady. Dr. Mike carries packets of yellow mustard, full of turmeric, to add to snacks and meals.

4. Take two baby aspirins daily (if your doc approves) with a half-glass of water before and after.

5. Get romantic. The neurotransmitter dopamine helps control information flow and memory. Levels decrease with age, but zoom up with sexual activity.

“Exercise is not the problem... it reveals the problem.”

Happy Sunday, my fellow health and fitness enthusiast.

When I hear someone giving up exercise because it 'caused' a new pain, an obscure soreness, an unfamiliar symptom...

It makes me sad.

You know how much I love workin' out, exercising, and training.

All the way back to when I was a kid - playing whiffle ball, baseball, football, you name it, with my brothers and neighbors in the backyard...

Lifting weights and doing sprints with my friends when I got into junior high...

And up until this day, still prioritizing movement and exercise into my daily routine.

I'm a firm believer that movement and exercise by itself is never bad...

But, it can be damaging if you're not ready for it.

Roasted Curry Cauliflower with Snap Peas and Wild Rice
(full recipe in this email below)
Dig into a flavorful cauliflower stir-fry with wild rice and spinach. Packed with wholesome ingredients and bursting with flavors, this dish will not only satisfy your taste buds but also provide you with essential nutrients.
Ingredients:
  • 1 medium head of cauliflower trim off leaves and thick stalk
  • 4 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tsp curry
  • 2 small yellow beets trimmed and peeled
  • 4 cups spinach raw
  • 2 cups cooked wild rice
  • 1 small onion
  • 3 oz snap peas trimmed
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium vegetable broth
Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to bake at 400°F.
  2. In a small bowl mix together the nutritional yeast, black pepper, maple syrup, Dijon mustard and curry.
  3. Place the cauliflower head on a large piece of foil and spread the curry mixture over the cauliflower. Wrap up the cauliflower.
  4. Wrap up the prepared beets in foil.
  5. Place both the cauliflower head and the beets in the oven and cook for 30 minutes.
  6. Meanwhile prepare the spinach and set aside.
  7. In a large pan, heat the vegetable broth and add the onion and garlic. Sauté for 3 to 5 minutes. Add the snap peas and cover with a lid and allow them to steam cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the wild rice and heat it through.
  8. Divide the cauliflower, beets, and rice mixture on to two plates and serve.
NOTE: If you wish you can cut up the cauliflowers into bite size pieces before cooking.You can also cook the spinach along with the rice dish by adding it to the rice mixture, cover the pan and cook until wilted.
